00:00Hey there, we're the team from Pluribus, and this is Deadline Contenders Television, the nominee's studio.
00:22This was pre-COVID, pre-AI.
00:26I just, I don't know where it came from, but it was just an idea I had as I was
00:30walking around, taking long walks during our lunch breaks on Better Call Saul.
00:35And a lot of people are making the AI connection, the COVID connection, which I'm fine with.
00:40But, yeah, it predated all of that.
00:42I think everyone else's interpretation of this thing is way more interesting than mine is.
00:48And during the Breaking Bad years, I had too big a mouth.
00:52I was always talking about, this is what this means.
00:54No, you're wrong.
00:56And don't interpret it that way.
00:57And that was a mistake on my part.
00:59I want the people who watch this show to tell me what it means.
01:02I really think they know better than I do.
01:05We make the show.
01:06I can't see the forest for the trees when we're making it.
01:09But I like the idea of other people interpreting it for me, for us.
01:14In the first weeks of Breaking Season 2, we kind of got bored with the atom bomb.
01:18So I don't think we're going to mention it again.
01:21But, because, you know, no.
01:24I told one interviewer that it might just be like an ADU.
01:28Just a little, you know, like you can rent a little casita out.
01:33Yeah.
01:33It's a pods delivery.
01:36So you can, you know, take your stuff and put it in a story.
01:39Because you don't really know if they really delivered the atom bomb.
01:43They can't lie.
01:44Are they that tricky?
01:45They can't lie, but there's always a way that they can put things and spin it to make it, you
01:51know.
01:51Oh, you meant an atom bomb?
01:53Sorry.
01:53We didn't deliver that.
01:54Oh, I'm sorry.
01:54You meant an atom.
01:55Oh, I thought you meant like a toy of an atom bomb.
02:01It is my first lead role.
02:02And it's been so much fun.
02:04And, yes, I get a couple of Hello Carols now and then in grocery stores, which is pretty funny.
02:10But the fans have actually been amazing.
02:13And the fact that the show, including what Vince is saying, that it is open to interpretation and has engendered
02:21really nuanced conversations.
02:23And these amazing wild swings it takes in tone from having comedy to having deep psychological drama and questions and
02:31stuff just makes people actually come up to me with like really interesting opinions about the show.
02:38And they feel very invested and they feel very invested in the character.
02:41And I feel very lucky that something that we made, that we've made it to the best of our abilities,
02:48which is always better because of the whole, because of the collaborative art form, it's better than any of, what
02:54is it?
02:54The sum is greater than the parts.
02:57Right.
02:57And so we were all so proud of it.
02:59But then to have it received as well as it has been received has just been some really awesome icing
03:05on the cake.
03:05When I got to the point of writing it, it definitely was.
03:07But you're right, when I was coming up with it on all those long walks, I was thinking of it
03:11being a male protagonist because that's just, you know, where my brain goes to.
03:17But then at the same time, I was working with Ray on Better Call Saul.
03:21And this was pretty early in the process.
03:23And all of us started to say, Peter Gould, the co-creator of Better Call Saul, he and I were
03:29saying, and everybody was saying, my God, Ray is so good.
03:33She's so good.
03:34We got to, and then I thought, and then I stopped talking about it because I thought I got to
03:38be the one that snags her because she's going to, she's going to, you know, wind up getting.
03:43I would have done the same thing, Vince.
03:45And then, and Melissa Bernstein, our wonderful producer, I said to Melissa, you're more in touch with Ray sometimes than
03:52I am.
03:53Can you be my spy and tell me if she's about to sign a big deal somewhere because I want
03:58to kind of swoop in there.
03:59And, but yeah, I didn't tell her about it for the longest time, but, but it was, yeah, it was
04:03the first time I've ever written, you know, not, you know, for, for a whole show, a female protagonist.
04:09And I'm so glad I was a little nervous about doing it because I was afraid I wouldn't get it
04:13right.
04:14But then I thought Ray will get it right, even if I don't.
04:17So yeah, but that's the truth.
04:19Yeah.
04:19No pressure, Ray.
04:21I don't know what shade of red I am right now.
04:24So it's everything you can imagine to have, honestly, one of, somebody who at this point is a dear friend
04:31of mine as well, who runs the sets the way he runs them, who is also a genius director and
04:37writer to say, hey, I wrote something for you.
04:40Like, I don't, I don't, I don't think it does get better than that.
04:42No.
04:43To be part of this has been truly a dream come true and working with Vince and working with Ray
04:48and Carlos and Jeff, we didn't get a chance to work, but you're part of me, we're in the same
04:52mind.
04:52So we're good.
04:54Um, you were there.
04:55I was, yeah, in his mind, we're connected.
04:58We're, we're, we're, we're, you know, telepathically communicating.
05:01The dynamic, what I love about it is, you know, is that Zosia is there to provide for Carol everything
05:09that she needs.
05:10I'm there to protect you.
05:12I'm there to make you feel seen and good.
05:14And it was great to play someone that doesn't have the full spectrum of emotion.
05:18Someone that, you know, is joyous and flappable and, you know, and have these beautiful scenes with you where you
05:25have these feelings and for me to hold space for you and love you unconditionally through everything.
05:30And then the evolution that happens between our relationship and episode eight, where we get to have another journey of
05:36more of an intimate, more personal, more evolved journey where, um, where Zosia gets to play out different side of
05:43her that she hasn't up to this point.
05:45And it was just so much fun to create Zosia and, and, and, and play with you and, and have
05:50these conversations on weekends we would meet and we would talk, talk about the, the scenes and dissect them and
05:56then have a conversation with you where the others are and fine tuning it on set and finding the nuances
06:01of where the others live.
06:03Um, and also the hard part was not mirroring your feelings in the scenes and not going on that journey.
06:08She has such a deceptively difficult role and I've said it to a million people.
06:12Like as humans, we mirror each other.
06:15And as actors, that's one of our greatest tools is listen and react.
06:19And if, if the conversation is going to a heated place, like, are you rising to the occasion or are
06:23you undercutting?
06:24And like, and she can't, she has to non, it's not a robot.
06:28It's a sentient person who has thoughts about what's happening, but doesn't mirror them.
06:32And it's incredible what you dialed into.
06:34But it was the collaboration of all of us.
06:36What's beautiful is just like you trusting you.
06:38And like, and I've said this before, it was incredible is when you work with someone and there was days
06:43where, uh, you know, I was like, Oh, you, we play so much and you go, try this, try that.
06:49Or, you know, and sometimes you're like, Oh God, are you sure?
06:51And I remember he said to me, you're going to learn to trust me.
06:55I don't know if you remember that.
06:56And I went, but I trust you.
06:57Like, well, you know, you will learn to trust me.
06:59And the truth is, I don't trust myself.
07:03No, but what's beautiful is like seeing, I know, but what's beautiful is that you learn, cause you've had this
07:08experience before.
07:10What's magnificent is when you work with someone that will never, ever make you look bad, that will challenge you
07:17to challenge yourself, to find things, find moments that you weren't sure that you could do.
07:22And like, you will never make us look bad.
07:24Like, and it's so incredible.
07:27Well, I hope not.
07:28Why arrange the possibilities to look at that?
07:31I could just miss it.
07:32It's the best when you have a creator where you're like, okay, I want to go there.
07:36I want to challenge myself.
07:37And when you're on the job where you want to be challenged and working with people that inspire you.
07:42And for me, like with you guys, like it's so inspiring.
07:45I'm like, I want to be the best version of myself and go as far as I can.
07:50And it's just such a beautiful environment to be in.
07:53It's kind of like a pilgrimage.
07:55They both are sort of pilgrims, Manoussus and myself.
07:59It's really hard to find the words, especially in a language that is not your first one, which is English
08:06to me.
08:07That he speaks better than we do.
08:09But, come on.
08:09Totally fine.
08:10Every time you're like, I don't know, I don't speak, and then you come up with this wild word.
08:14I'm like, what does that mean?
08:15It's because I speak from Spanish.
08:17You're so good.
08:17So I know those words in Spanish, and I take a chance, and I translate them to English.
08:21But I would add to all the praise that Ray has given Vince, all the adjectives, beautiful adjectives that you
08:28use for Vince.
08:29I would say that he's a miracle worker.
08:31Because me being here is no short of a miracle, really.
08:37This is something that was not in the equation of my life, really.
08:42Really.
08:42It wasn't, I would love to say that I was dreaming about this, but I wouldn't even allow myself to
08:48dream this.
08:48It wasn't a possibility.
08:50It was really, I'm just saying that this doesn't happen to a Colombian actor.
08:55And it did.
08:56And I have this guy to thank for this.
08:58Carlos Manuel, he is a man.
09:00He is the guy.
09:02And we were so lucky.
09:03And he'll talk to B.L.A. Thomas Casting, also nominated.
09:06Of course.
09:07For doing these worldwide searches.
09:10Yes.
09:11Well, it's always hard to be a guest star.
09:13And it's especially hard to be a guest star on a show that has this complicated of a premise.
09:19And the only way that it worked is because Ray gave up a Sunday, a very precious day off on
09:27this very grueling shoot, invited me over, and we rehearsed for like hours.
09:33And set me down.
09:35And Alison Tatlock, who is a writer on the show, answered all sorts of questions.
09:40And Zetna Fuentes, who was the director, gave us all sorts of props.
09:43And without that, I wouldn't have done anything.
09:48It was the gift of those three women on a Sunday afternoon that made the performance anything.
09:55He's uber talented.
09:56We invited him over, but then he knows what he's doing once he's in the sandbox.
10:00And it was fun.
10:01It was nerdy.
10:02It was good.
10:02And we made you wear that crazy bicycle racing suit.
10:06That look was brilliant.
10:07I deserve an award nomination just for that.
