00:27I think we all grew up with Stephen King.
00:30He's everything.
00:32New England just, I always romanticized it growing up.
00:35I loved visiting there.
00:37But Massachusetts, in that area,
00:39there's just so much history.
00:40When we were scouting,
00:43we would look at buildings that were so old,
00:45and like, oh, several terrible things have happened there.
00:48A lot of bad stuff went down there.
00:50And you could just feel it,
00:51and it just felt rich for telling many stories.
00:56Stephen King tweeted and said,
00:58Widow's Bay is good.
01:01There was more to that.
01:03He said, Widow's Bay is good,
01:05and we'll leave it at that.
01:08Because he said, another show is better.
01:10And you know what?
01:10The man is a king.
01:12And I don't mean the wordplay.
01:13He likes many shows.
01:14He seemed to like this.
01:16And we'll take it.
01:17We'll take it.

01:20Goodbye, King.
01:21That he watched it all thrills us to no end.
01:24Yes.
01:24A hundred percent.
01:25The tone was just so wholly unique,
01:28which is both exciting and also like,
01:31how are we going to do that?
01:32And so the challenge was kind of landing this tone
01:36that existed between comedy and horror,
01:38but you still had kind of genuine care for these characters.
01:41And the immediate thing I kind of thought of is like,
01:43if you have the wrong actor,
01:46this whole thing kind of falls apart.
01:48You know, I'm only saying this
01:49because I know Matthew hates getting compliments on camera.
01:53So, and I honestly wasn't sure it was going to work
01:56until we met Matthew, honestly.
01:58According to Stephen King, it was really good.
02:04I have no idea.
02:06It's gone absolutely bonkers in the best possible way.
02:10But I guess, yeah, it's the fact that I think it's that
02:12she's a flawed person that is very recognisable
02:15and that we all have an inner weirdo in us.
02:19And, you know, it's quite,
02:21I find it more comforting to watch characters that are,
02:24you know, a bit annoying, that don't do the right thing.
02:27And then sometimes they step up and they're brave.
02:30And sometimes you see them loving
02:31and sometimes you see them a bit bitchy or a bit.
02:33That I find comforting TV, which is, I don't know.
02:38Real people.
02:38Real people.
02:39Yeah.
02:39And I think that's what everyone's responding to.
02:42And I'd say that they're responding to all our characters
02:45because all of them are so well drawn.
02:47I think funny is funny.
02:49And these guys are the funniest of the, you know.
02:54Shush, shush, shush.
02:55No, I think the writing is funny.
02:58That's by an American.
02:59I mean, like, I don't know.
03:00Funny is funny.
03:01I don't think it's British or American, really.
03:04I always knew I wanted to do it
03:05because I'd never read anything like it.
03:07It was so other.
03:09It was so, it was so needed.
03:11It was so refreshing.
03:13But the most important thing to me is like,
03:15I desperately wanted to know how it would end.
03:18That's because I was like, yes, I know.
03:20And yes, and it was, you know, I was like,
03:22but what's going to happen?
03:24And when you kind of, when so much was teed up in the pilot,
03:28I was like, okay, what's going to happen here?
03:30Because I need to know.
03:31And the only way that'll happen is if I'm in it.
03:36And, you know, the conversation, I think, was very simple
03:38because I remember saying, well, how do you say exactly what Hero just said
03:43about the tone?
03:44And Hero just said, we're just going to create a real world.
03:46And then I was like, oh, right, okay.
03:48It's like, now I know.
03:50It's just going to be real.
03:51And we'll play it for real.
03:53No one, I think, turned up to make a comedy or a horror,
03:55but we all just played it for real.
03:58When I read the script, which was the pilot script,
04:02to work on my audition, and I think they gave me the whole script,
04:06I just remember instantly I was so joyous because it was so funny.
04:12I was laughing out loud, and I don't usually do that.
04:16I mean, to where I, it wasn't forced laughter.
04:20It was just, oh, my God.
04:21And then I started, like, I could picture people in my head about,
04:25oh, well, they can do this role.
04:26I could visualize them, you know.
04:29Occasionally there were some Jaws people in there, but, you know,
04:31Robert Shaw, but we knew we weren't going with him because he's dead.
04:34But I just, you know, Rosemary is so nonchalant about everything.
04:42And Katie had said to me early on, she knows full well what's happening on the island,
04:50but she's not too dramatic or worried about it, nor does she stick her head in the sand.
04:57And she, I think, deals with it with a sarcastic sense of humor, which is fun.
05:03I need more, I need to deal with things in my own life with more humor.
05:07So I related to her laid-backness and her just self-assurance just to be who she is
05:17and say what she wants to say, whether it's annoying or not.
05:21And, yeah, and the earthiness, the fact that she grew up on the island.
05:26And I love haunted stories and island stories.
05:31How hard was it not to improv?
05:34Because obviously it must have been quite tempting to just roll into that.
05:38Oh, yeah, that was actually very tempting, yes.
05:40Yes, and I didn't know I'd succeed.
05:42And I, whatever, they said, we'll cut around that.
05:47They were the best bits.
05:48That was the best bit when Jeff would improvise.
05:51And it would always be at the end of the scene.
05:52It was just like a little golden nugget that we'd get for free.
05:55What's an example of something you'd be thinking about?
05:59Oh, that actually made it in?
06:00Yeah.
06:03Well, one that I think I'm, like, weirdly proud of that literally no one has said that they liked
06:10is when Tom is talking and saying, like, I don't think this microphone is on.
06:15I just, and it's sand, and I say, I can hear you.
06:22The hero and Katie, what's a favorite Matthew moment now that you watch the show that you
06:28keep laughing at every single time that gets you?
06:32Sorry, Matthew.
06:33There's a lot.
06:34Yeah, because I have to say, like, as much as we talk about how these actors played it
06:39straight and they, you know, they, to their mind, they were in a drama, they are very funny
06:46people.
06:46Like, I don't think that Matthew is just going into the scene dramatically.
06:50Like, he understands what's funny about it.
06:53Like, he is an amazing comedic performer, you know?
06:56I want to go on about this for 20 minutes.
06:59I think we can end it there, because really, it's in the writing, and if you don't, you
07:04know.
07:04It's easy what he's doing.
07:05No, it's not.
07:06No, it's not.
07:06It is, but it really is.
07:08I mean, one of the biggest tricks is not getting in the way of that, and that, you know, just
07:14standing on the tape.
07:16Can I say one of my favorite things is the dynamic with Patricia, this codependent thing
07:21they have.
07:22Whenever, like, the moment in episode nine when the old timer gets at the door, Ed peed, and
07:28he starts telling a story about the storm, and the way Loftus just looks at Patricia
07:33and just goes like, yeah, it just, it just tells her quietly, it's so subtle, just close
07:38the door, and she has to, huffs and puffs and goes over to close it.
07:41It's just those little moments always kill me.
07:43I got one.
07:44This was, like, memed, and I was so happy, because it was, like, always my favorite part
07:49when, in episode seven, when you're in a boat with Richard Warren, and you're kind of
07:54filling his cup, and you're telling him, like, if I live to 65, you know, I'd be, I'd be
07:58pleased.
07:58And the boat gets rocked by a wave, and then you kind of get, like, yanked, almost like
08:03someone just pulled, like, a, put a cane around you and pulled you off the seat.
08:07That's my favorite moment.
08:08Can I give one more?
08:11In five.
08:13In five, when he's on the drug trip, he did something I did not anticipate, which is,
08:18okay, when he's sitting in the town hall, it's all yelling at him.
08:21And then someone says, let's hear from Loftus, let's hear what he has to say.
08:25I always imagined he would just look terrified in that moment, but he does this thing first
08:29where he, like, smiles and nods, like, yeah, let's hear what he has to say.
08:33And then he looks scared, and then he blacks out.
08:36That killed me.
08:37What was interesting to me was that Katie Dippold put in just the right amount of backstory
08:45into one little episode where you realize that Tom Loftus and Wick have known each other
08:51since Tom was a little kid and annoying the hell out of him.
08:55So I would love to know more about the backstory.
08:59What made Wick Wick?
09:01What kind of scenes did he see when he was a kid or a young man to make him want
09:09to be
09:09a protector of the island, to get to the point where he couldn't stand it anymore and said,
09:15no, I'm not sitting back anymore.
09:18I'm going to tell this mayor that I don't respect, that I'm going to come out and I'm
09:25going to sound the siren, and the fact that we get to the point where Tom Loftus actually
09:33does go sound the siren, so we've come together at the end of our road.
09:39You've played 300 roles on screen so far, so I'd love to just hear what your favorite
09:46piece of advice would be for people starting out in this movie.
09:54Well, actually, I'm just arm candy for Dale Dickey, who should answer that question rather
10:00than I am, because she has probably done more roles than I have.
10:03She's brilliant.
10:04Absolutely not.
10:05No.
10:05No, my advice to all younger actors is do everything you can.
10:13You know, build yourself a resume because work begets work.
10:17And if you do your work well, you'll work with these same people again.
10:22And so you try not to bump into the furniture or be unpleasant on the set.
10:29So it's mostly about staying the course, I think.
10:34You know, this is my 50th year as a paid actor.
10:41And most of the people that I started with are not in it.
10:44But I think if you just stay with it and become a good person, you're going to be okay.
10:54Katie said, don't f*** up for me, because this is a huge moment in my life.
10:58I was like, all right.
11:00Hero is the true, I was going to say king, but I'm tired of that word.
11:06I've never kind of come across a director who can challenge you with notes in such a sliding scale of
11:13kind of going, how about in the most collaborative way, which is very rare, of kind of going, how about
11:18this?
11:18Do you want to try this?
11:19What if this did this?
11:20And so you're always kind of, you stop acting because the process becomes very active for you.
11:27And he's a genius at that.
11:29So there wasn't like one, I was just always agog that you could find eight million different notes for the
11:37different, different notes for like for the same moment.
11:40I was like, oh my God, I didn't even thought that.
11:43So he continues to kind of amaze me.
11:45Turns out I don't like compliments either.
11:49I hear it.
11:50I heard it, pucker.
11:52But I really liked the salty whale set would often be like our green room or sort of de facto
11:59green room.
11:59And we would sit around in little director's chairs and, and it's just very exciting to be around other actors
12:07and especially like Dale and Steven are, you know, they, you just said how many roles they've been in and
12:13every role comes with a story.
12:16And so hearing those stories was real good.
12:21I want to know what monologue would you favorably do in season two?
12:29Oh, dear God.
12:33In my mind, I'm like, is there another neighboring island that has relatives, hidden people, haunted things that Wick sends
12:48me on a journey, get in the boat and row over to that island and figure out the hell what's
12:52going on over there.
12:53Let's do it.
12:54Let's do it, you know, and then she gets stranded over there and she becomes the island gossip with whoever's
13:01living on that island.
13:02I have no idea.
13:04Yeah.
13:05Yeah.
13:05I, I, I can't wait to learn more about all of these characters.
13:08And so, you know, she does know an awful lot about everybody.
13:12And the fact that, you know, there's no age limit on syphilis.
13:15So, I don't know why she knows that about him, but I like that she does.
13:22Yeah.
13:23Mine too.
13:25Little season two teaser.
13:27How's the Warioita's room going?

13:29Oh, it's going great.

13:38I think, um, I feel like I always looked at season one as what was really hard about it is
13:43having to lay all the groundwork.
13:45Like Haunted Island sounds silly and terrible, honestly.

13:51Like, I'm still so happy they all signed on.
13:53It's a tough pitch, you know?
13:55But, uh, so I feel like a lot of groundwork was laid in season one so you can buy it.
13:59So it's making the season two room much more fun to be had.

14:05But yeah, no Loftus.
