00:14what's good everybody welcome back to another edition of new york got game texture henry
00:19brian for my sake here if you're looking at us things look a little different yeah we've got
00:24a nicer set yeah i'm saying nicer i like this set better it's a newer set it's a nice set
00:29i
00:29like it we're going to be adding stuff to it adding more nick stuff to it so we like it
00:33the
00:34set in the studios change a little bit brian do you like the look i do i i was wondering
00:38about
00:39the orange lighting how do we uh how do we execute that because i feel like i feel like we
00:44got the
00:44right you know like if i had a swatch it would be this color it's the right it's the right
00:48the right
00:48shade of orange well shout out to our great technical directors uh sam and juliana who did
00:55a fantastic job we have the right lighting the right orange back there if you are listening to
00:59this then none of this matters because you can't see any of this although on spotify you could see
01:03the video this is true if you're watching this then you know it's great you get to see the set
01:08and understand what we're talking about uh what we're going to talk about today is thoughts and
01:13questions from the people which i always love it is mailbag time it is that it is late off-season
01:19mailbag time i feel we'll do another one of these before the season starts but it is late off-season
01:24mailbag time so we have a bunch of questions and comments from the fans now the last time we did
01:30this boy we had some interesting comments including some people who didn't think i should be wearing a
01:35metz hat um who who we love i'm forgetting my guy's name uh shout out to you because you always
01:41are watching the content and supporting so uh we love you for that uh but i actually am wearing another
01:46metz hat today if you can't see so we're keeping uh carrying on tradition is what i'll say yeah we
01:52are
01:52doing here and not for nothing have been playing a little bit better lately just a little bit yeah
01:58just a little okay let me tell you still ten and a half games or whatever out of the wild
02:01card but i'm
02:03not gonna talk anything about the uh i looked i looked the other day because i was like yo if
02:08they
02:08get down to seven around september 1st then i'll look but outside of that i'm not okay that's that's
02:13it they got they got a little more work to do this is not straight out of flushing this is
02:16new york
02:16game so with all that being said hit the like button for straight out of flushing if you want
02:23to that being said we are going to look at some comments we have some different ones these have
02:27all been submitted by our wonderful producer tommy hogan he selected these from the comments you guys
02:32left i have not looked at these i have no idea what you guys are talking about so i'll be
02:35surprised
02:36maybe somebody comments on my hat again i have no idea let's see what we got for the first comment
02:40our
02:41first one comes from russell new york 80 86 okay so this is in response i think this came from
02:51brian the
02:53video essay that we did on mike brown um which was a good one did a video as mike brown
02:58and so
02:59there's a comment this would definitely not be directed at me which is good
03:03well i don't know i wasn't in that you were you were not part of that but it was about
03:08mike brown's
03:09just for context mike brown's journey and what he had done in his career to it's becoming a
03:14championship head coach right which is an interesting journey it was i had fun writing that one it was a
03:17good story to tell yeah absolutely um so this person says lmfao russell new york 80 86 he came with
03:25the heat all caps lmfao as you can see he's the new steve kerr okay not don't think there's a
03:31problem
03:31what direction is this going steve kerr stole mark jackson's team uh-huh kerr was a glorified babysitter
03:38brown came to the knicks when they were already good and expected to win if not for injuries in
03:422024 tips gets that team to the finals i don't give flowers to a guy that pulls a kd joins
03:49a good team
03:49then thinks i'm giving him credit i could have coached the knicks oh oh there's nothing keep going
03:57there's nothing i like more there's a laughing emoji there too which is important is it yeah i'm not
04:04laughing it gives off like oh i think this is funny but really he's dead serious he or she i
04:10think this is a he right um it's russell i'm assuming russell new york i would assume so unless it's
04:14somebody's last name look i i i don't know where to begin oh i know where to begin go i
04:21know exactly
04:22the part about i could have coached the knicks no you couldn't no you couldn't yeah no i can't stand
04:28when people try to devalue the job of being like an nba head coach or working in front office and
04:34just think that you can do it or anybody could do it no you can't no you can't or i
04:38mean people i
04:40think period people try to devalue other people's jobs now like that's just a thing that we do in
04:452026 often people do this with people in like the media for example people do this with coaches people
04:50do this with players people do this with not even just inside of sports like people do this even with
04:56people in office and different things like that i i think i think first of all it's not a good
05:02example because like there was a a couple drastic differences between mark jackson and steve kerr
05:08anybody will tell you that um you could say steve kerr won with his players but ultimately what did
05:13mark jackson do with those players yes they won 50 games and you saw what happened immediately after
05:17he left and then the stories came out about yo mark jackson's kind of weird to deal with
05:23he didn't use draymond green properly steve kerr did he had him at the end of the bench granted he
05:28was young like i don't think anyone seriously believes that the warriors had would have had
05:35the same success had mark jackson been there the entire time like steve kerr was i like you said same
05:41success i think there's a possibility could have won a title sure yeah sure but maybe he doesn't unlock
05:47the players in the same way and that's the key word i want to use here sometimes a different coach
05:50we talked about this last year when mike brown got hired sometimes a different coach a different
05:54personality meshes with players and unlocks what he needs to get him to go because here's what i'll
05:58say on this one steve kerr didn't steal mark jackson's job that's ridiculous he got the job yeah he got
06:04the job jackson hasn't been a coach since either there's a reason for that to talking about you know
06:09i don't give flowers to a guy that pulls a kd and joins a good team when you were trying
06:15to get a
06:15coaching job one of these limited jobs in nba you were going to take the jobs that are available you're
06:20trying to get the best job you can who goes to a team and is like i want to go
06:23to a bad team and
06:24coach them who says that nobody nobody does that nobody's like hey i want this bad job that's the
06:30problem i always talk about this on the show some of you do not look at this like employment and
06:35that's the problem do you want to go to bad job have you ever heard hey man yo don't go
06:40to that job
06:40over there yo management whack yo co-workers they're not happy and then you don't go regardless of the
06:47pay this happens in regular jobs right i've had this happen where people talking hey man
06:52you might not want to go there i've told people right hey you might not want to why would you
06:57not
06:58try to go where you're spending the most of your time at work why would you not try to go
07:01to the
07:01best situation yeah who does that so to sit there and act like and here's the thing even with kd
07:06it's a free agent you have a right to choose that's not a anything to look negatively upon somebody
07:10for you also can't say this about somebody who walked into a situation where nobody had won before
07:17for 53 years yeah like yes no no that's a great point this is a great point like nobody has
07:23done
07:23this nobody has done this before and now you're trying to give somebody a demerit like no you have
07:27to give credit you're gonna have done it you can't like steve kerr won with mark jackson's players
07:32mark jackson didn't win with those players so you can't say like mike brown won with tom thibodeau's
07:36players because thibs didn't win with those players like he won to a point but didn't get
07:40to the finals and i don't know and this is the whole thing that the knicks had to wrestle with
07:45because the knicks told us how they felt after last season when they fired tom thibodeau but i
07:49don't know if tom thibodeau were still there that they just win the championship this year i i here's
07:55why here's why i think you're gonna say no no because and the reason i think that is one simple
08:01thing for
08:01me one very simple thing for me and that's would he have made the adjustment let's say things were
08:07exactly the same and i know that's hard to predict you can't say that because that's not how sports
08:11works but let's say things were exactly the same after game three in atlanta does tom thibodeau make
08:16the adjustment there based on what i have seen before those movies before my answer is no and i think
08:22that
08:22is the biggest and you think they lose that series then i'm not going that far okay but i think
08:28making
08:28that adjustment sparked even more confidence in the team that the adjustment was made three games
08:34into the playoffs it empowered people i think that's what mike brown was always has been good
08:38at this last season was empowering people it's a it's a it's something that it's not x's and o's
08:44so people can't tangibly see it but you saw it in this run what happens when you have the guts
08:50that's
08:51the thing i'm gonna call it that i'm not that's not me saying that tom thibodeau was shook
08:55he had a bit of rigidity to him that doesn't mean they couldn't have won i can't say that just
08:59like
08:59i can't say in this comment if not for injuries in 2024 tibbs gets that team to the finals maybe
09:04i
09:05think i just talked about this it's one of the biggest what ifs in nick's history if that team
09:09had stayed healthy but they didn't you could talk about all that stuff but they didn't and you know
09:14who did mike brown yeah mike brown did that's at the end of the day no matter what you want
09:19to say
09:20you can say i'm not going to give this man credit fine he's the first person to do
09:24something in 53 years he don't care about your credit he don't he doesn't care at all
09:29whatsoever and you know what if you're not going to give somebody credit for being the first to do
09:32something in 53 years i don't know man i feel like that says a lot about you yeah yeah we
09:38can move on
09:39yeah that's it that's all i'm saying like i'm damn i didn't know the mike brown haters were actually still
09:44out here okay next one that we've got up here this is from andrew abraham 5109 and i think this
09:52came
09:52from the episode where we were talking about what knicks what the knicks can do players can
09:56do to improve this season which was a fun one that we did uh andrew says i think brunson can
10:01improve
10:02on playing with more pace and also expand more off ball what do you guys think what do you say
10:08i think
10:08that could always be an option for somebody who's aging not to call jalen brunson old i'm not doing that
10:14but if you want somebody to evolve quote unquote you want them to not be able to have to do
10:20as much
10:21especially if they're a smaller guard who already creates a ton of offense so i think playing with
10:26more pace to to some degree i don't i don't know if that's necessary i mean i i get it
10:32when
10:34the possessions boil down you're an isolation ball now and jalen brunson all of a sudden have to create
10:39has to create offense yeah that can slow things down so i guess you literally mean hey can you get
10:45in
10:46and out of offense faster can you not have so many possessions where you're six seconds five
10:52seconds late on the shot clock and the team is often toward the end in pace like we thought that
10:56was a tom thibodeau thing but that's something that continued because this is just the personnel
10:59thought the pace was going to change this last year and it not not dramatically yeah and it did a
11:05little bit yeah not much yeah like the last tom thibodeau year they were 26 in pace last year they
11:10were 27
11:11and they were actually a touch faster like by a touch i mean 96.7 to 96.8 in terms
11:17of pace
11:18um relatively yeah which is still as fast as they were any tom thibodeau year except for one it was
11:24one year where they were 25th and they were 97.1 that was the first year that they made the
11:28playoffs
11:28with jalen brunson's jay lebrunson's first year so i i don't i don't know if the pace is going to
11:33be
11:33a thing like i'm just not expecting this core this personnel group to be top 20 in pace ever you
11:40know which
11:40just surprised me but do i think the off ball stuff there's stuff there that you could unlock
11:45yes and i also think you kind of have to because of the makeup of your roster if he's going
11:50to play
11:50more minutes with jose alvarado coming off the bench then you have obviously like deuce mcbride
11:55for example if you have if you want to call deuce mcbride a ball handler for the purposes of this
11:59conversation you have guys that jalen brunson can play off of so i do think that's something that's
12:05worth utilizing especially since you know he can catch and shoot and you know he's going to attract
12:10a lot of attention wherever he goes so that can free things up for some other guys so yeah i'm
12:14always a proponent of getting him off ball a little bit just to make his life easier yeah i really
12:19liked
12:20what we saw last year for the most part where there were some times particularly more earlier in the
12:26regular season we saw jalen brunson off the ball i think that you can see more of that this year
12:31i think
12:32where you want to see it more and where it counts is because this is where we are with the
12:34nicks in
12:35the playoffs playoffs yeah that's where you want to see it right you still want to see jalen brunson
12:40get easier shots now here's why i think you could see some of that this season and more into the
12:44playoffs we saw cat used as the hub of the offense in the playoffs and how that opened up things
12:49for
12:49just a lot of players og michael bridges brunson as well too so because they know they can do that
12:54they have confidence in executing in that manner at a high level and i'm sure the coaching staff and mike
13:01brown right the first coach to win 53 years uh for the nicks that deserves credit is going to add
13:07new wrinkles to this and i think he started a little bit with brunson trying to get him more comfortable
13:12off the ball and catch through situations to not wear him down over the regular season and i think
13:15you're going to see even more of that i think less of the ball in brunson's hands now it would
13:19also help
13:20if somebody else maybe a michael bridges could help that can take over for some of that secondary
13:25ball handling and playmaking as well too just so you don't always have to feel that load but
13:30yeah man no i think andrew's on to something the pace thing i'm with you i worry less about that
13:36yeah brunson off the ball which i think is again i think it's a space in which he can really
13:43excel
13:44if he wants to and i thought he did we've seen we saw it in dallas right we saw so
13:48we know he can do it
13:49i just think listen what you want from brunson is you want everybody's always going to wax poetic
13:55about as they should about game five against san antonio and you're going to want when necessary
14:02yeah and hopefully he is fresh if other guys don't have it offensively because nicks actually had it
14:07defensively in that game but offensively you needed him to come through crazy with an injured wrist and
14:13still got it done right right but if you can make life easier for him and again you talked about
14:19he's a good catch and shoot player he doesn't have to always do everything off the dribble
14:24if he does that it just makes the nicks better it just makes the nicks better and it's a huge
14:30thing
14:31for the nicks going forward so andrew yeah i like the comment um i do think that he can expand
14:36more
14:37off the ball i don't think that's crazy and i would also add i personally would like to see the
14:42usage
14:42maybe come down a touch because we've talked about that yep if you want to preserve him for
14:45the playoffs that's really another way to do it because the usage was 29 and a half before last
14:50year and then last year was 30 and a half basically so it actually went up a little bit granted
14:55did that
14:56with the turnover percent is dropping a point from 10 and a half to nine and a half percent which
14:59is
14:59good uh but then in the playoffs obviously the use is going to go up for your best players goes
15:03up
15:03to 32.6 which is where it's been the last two playoff trips um and the year before that was
15:0836 and
15:09a half so i think uh for me i probably look at more of the usage and try to have
15:14him like you you
15:15have to just get him through the regular season so that he can get you through the playoffs that's
15:19that's the part that matters right that keeping that usage down is to keep him fresh through the
15:23regular season we talked about this in the in the last one of the last episodes and just what's he
15:27going to be like with his wrist especially that factor of him trying to come back yeah from that we
15:32think he'll be okay but you don't want the workload for him to be really good all right next comment
15:38post up videos uh comments here says do not slow cats aggressive offensive play
15:44one offensive foul a game is totally acceptable and i think this also comes from i don't know about
15:48that episode one a game is i think you could do a little bit of both i think you can
15:55maintain
15:56a level of aggression and not have one offensive power every game i think i think you need to look
16:01at
16:01like how much more that is than everyone else the one offensive i think i think you i think which
16:08what happens when you say it's one offensive foul a game it's like well what happens if he has
16:12a tough defensive matchup right and you know you're going to probably use little files it just
16:17sounds like oh yeah you can sacrifice one offensive foul a game but what's that offensive
16:22foul look like is it a charging foul that ends up in you know as a turnover that changes momentum
16:28right i don't know if it's totally acceptable i don't want him averaging one offensive foul yeah
16:34it's just i think i think people like this is it's look i get things i i just want to
16:39say i'm not
16:40laughing at you posting videos i understand why we look at that and it's just like oh that's a small
16:44number it's just one offensive foul a game right i get how you got there but i do i think
16:48that people
16:49need to realize like how much that actually is when we say cat had 65 offensive fouls last year and
16:56then
16:56second place was 40 with jaylen brown jaylen brown who all y'all are like hey he pushes off all
17:02the
17:02time 25 fewer than cat jaron jackson jr 34 and yet go kongu 34 like not even close right and
17:09then you
17:10look at the year before so this would have been cats uh first year offensive fouls uh committed 49
17:17car i think the towns led the nba the monster sabonis was second at 42 so not as dramatic of
17:23a gap by the
17:23way julius randall surprise surprise third 37 and i know how y'all feel about julius randall so like
17:30this is this like he's gonna lead the league in offensive fouls i'm pretty sure he's done it more
17:35than these two times i'm gonna look back you don't want it to be by 20 right the year the
17:41year before
17:42that was last in minnesota carthian towns led league offensive fouls he had 52 the monster sabonis had 48
17:5065 is just next level okay 65 is just next level he had 52 and 62 games granted but it's
17:57just next
17:58level so uh carl anthony towns for just three straight years because i went back to 22 23 he did
18:04not lead the league for three straight years is the offensive foul uh champion in the nba this year
18:10this is what i'd like for acceptability how about just not leading the league in offensive fouls how about
18:16that like can we have like if if if cat doesn't lead the league in offensive fouls i i don't
18:22get i
18:23want to say this i don't think cat wants to lead the league in offense right yes i don't think
18:26it's
18:26his goal aggressive but you we talked about this we said controlled aggression controlled aggression
18:32controlled aggression the goal to i would love this this might be what maybe we do a video on this
18:36later
18:37one of the things i'm looking for with carl details this season is hey could you not lead the
18:43league in offensive you come in number two it's a win you come in number two it is a victory
18:49i think
18:49take it i think he might be the goat in this category in 22 23 nobody wants to be the
18:54goat in
18:55that in 22 23 he had 28 offensive fouls but he played 29 games due to injuries so he averaged
19:00one a game
19:02if he had played more you know who knows what would happen he was on pace for 82 in 21
19:0722 he has 67
19:08and 74 games led the league by far yonas valentunas was second with 53 67 and 74 games that's not
19:15yeah
19:15it's 67 yeah so so that's almost won a game um and then the year after the coven year he
19:22had 50 and
19:2350 games he was second to yannis who had 53 and 61 and dwight howard dwight howard with philly and
19:30what
19:30year 50 50 in 69 games but in only uh 1200 minutes roughly so yeah cat if he if he
19:37plays and
19:38is healthy he is always up there in this category which is that's something i'm glad we looked at
19:45this because the point that people should take you don't really want one offensive foul game you don't
19:49want to be averaging one offensive foul game again it it takes away led the league in 18 19 with
19:53yannis
19:54let's say eight let's put it to you let's put it because situations matter too let's say
19:59i'm gonna give two situations here let's say you pick up a touch foul or any game this actually
20:04happened in one of the i think this was actually in game three or four of the nba final i
20:08think so
20:08you pick up a touch foul and then you pick up an offensive i think it was game four you
20:11pick up
20:12an offensive foul yeah and it fell behind very quickly and it was very quickly in the first
20:16quarter well now think about what that changes that one offensive foul you got puts you on the bench
20:20mike brown can't play you i'm just going to give another scenario let's say you come back into the
20:25game mid-second quarter because that's the time you want to try to say okay we'll make sure this guy
20:30doesn't pick up foul number three but you get another offensive foul and you pick a foul number
20:34three that one offensive foul if you're just playing with the one defensive foul you can play a little
20:38bit more aggressive defensively it changes how you play so the timing of when you get that one offensive
20:43foul is important right because it totally affects your rotations totally affects how the coach can play
20:48you one offensive foul is a lot more than you think is it's pretty much what i'm saying yeah it's
20:53a lot
20:54more than you think and if you're averaging one per game it impacts and this was one of my
20:59concerns when cat came to this team was is he going to be able to stay on the floor when
21:04you're
21:05picking up nearly one offensive foul a game they're momentum killers and they prevent your ability to
21:10stay on the floor what cat did a pretty good job of through the postseason was actually being able to
21:14stay on the floor yeah and cut down on the silly fouls so one offensive foul game post the videos
21:21gotta disagree yeah not really accepted granted he plays a lot of minutes so like let's be fair there
21:26um it's not as bad as dwight howard getting all those offensive fouls in philadelphia that i just
21:31mentioned but it's it's still a lot like his rookie year he was second at demarcus cousins first and
21:37y'all remember peak demarcus cousins was out here uh committing demarcus cousins yeah yeah yeah that's
21:43yeah yeah so i mean look it's is it the end of the world does it mean he's a bad
21:48player absolutely not
21:49we've talked we've seen him we've waxed we've waxed poetic about him up here in terms of what he can
21:54do
21:55offensively you know moving the cat ball saved their season essentially last year and part of
22:00also saving their season was it felt like he was committing less of those fouls on offense so that
22:06he can stay out on the floor but ultimately yeah like you you don't want to be leading the league
22:10in this category necessarily but um last year was like the the first year where he had that much of
22:16an edge on whoever's second place but he tends to be up there in this category every time if he's
22:21healthy every single time all right it's who he is moving on to the next one uh let's see what
22:26we
22:26got here we have bronx roots six six six eight said there's a reason heart has been on multiple teams
22:33it's strictly his jumper that includes his mid-range he's a poor shooter he's on the other side of 30
22:38and
22:38he is what he is at this point in his career he should be a sixth man going forward now
22:44bronx roots
22:45here's what i find interesting about your comment here if you remember for people who watch the show
22:50last year when brian and i brian knows where i'm going when we did our minutes breakdown which we will
22:55do again this year i'm sure before the season when we did our minutes breakdown we thought the workload
23:01and minutes for josh hart should go down a little bit i think we had him in like that 25
23:07to 28 minute
23:08range i think i think 25 to 30 tops tops maybe it's 30 times i don't think we hit 30
23:13i think it was 25
23:1428 i think that was the range right yeah but we had him starting still yeah and we'll get into
23:20something
23:20because we talked about this we'll probably get something a couple weeks about josh hart
23:23and his and a potential extension what that should look like we'll see
23:28josh hart has been a streaky shooter he did shoot interestingly enough with the injured finger
23:3541 from three in the regular season that did not translate to the postseason he had some games
23:41where he was hot made shots and it was good he was willing to shoot and that's the thing for
23:45me
23:46he is on the other side of 30 you said he is what he is at this point in his
23:49career i would not
23:50disagree brian has also wondered about how his game ages yeah as he gets older yeah should he be a
23:57six man going forward i don't think this is the season you need to do this i think eventually that
24:03could come a time well said what matters on that for me bronx roots again i see what you're thinking
24:10and where it's going i don't necessarily disagree with you what matters to me is okay there's something
24:16else we'll probably get into in a couple of weeks what does the development look like for some of these
24:21young players maybe a mohammedia war maybe even brian's boy picom dadi what does that look like
24:26for one of those guys are they now pushing for minutes where you can trust them and maybe have
24:32heart in that role i think heart somebody could transition to that role but what he is is a swiss
24:37army knife kind of player is very valuable i don't want to discredit his value to the knicks he's very
24:42valuable he's still the best what six five and under rebounder in the league for sure it's probably
24:49still true he can push the he can push the pace he can get you transition buckets when he's on
24:54a hit and
24:54open three and he's willing to shoot because that's the thing for him he's never he's not going to be
24:58a
24:58great shooter it's not going to happen you hope he hits a 41 again i mean 41 for a season
25:03is great
25:03it's great but if if he hits 37 this season everybody will sign for that you will absolutely
25:10positively sign for that if he hits 37 i think it's about him being a willing shooter and not
25:15getting in his head in his confidence and when he's willing it's fine even the playoffs when he
25:19wasn't making it game two against cleveland a great example he did not shoot the ball well in game one
25:24the knicks still came back and won that game two against cleveland i think he hit i was four or
25:27five
25:28threes in that game five of eleven five of eleven i love that he was a willing shooter that he
25:31took
25:32he made i think three corner threes that's what you need from him um five should he be a six
25:37man
25:37going forward yes eventually i could see that role i don't think this season is the season for that
25:42now they try that this year remember this past season he came off the bench for the first month of
25:47the year and then they put him back into the starting lineup because he tried to double bigs right
25:52didn't work didn't work um shout out to mike brown willing to do that willing to yes that that is
25:59true although josh hart probably would have just started the season if it were tom thibodeau um and
26:03play 39 minutes again his minutes were up at one point but then they eventually dropped back down yeah
26:10i think i think eventually this will be the case like i think this is this is uh you're maybe
26:14a little
26:14too early on this but i think this is where we're eventually going to get to because of all the
26:18things you mentioned him being a swiss army knife those players are really good coming off the
26:22bench as a matter of fact like alex caruso is not the same exact player but kind of the swiss
26:28army
26:29knife more so from the perimeter especially from a defensive standpoint you know in big games he can
26:34get rebounds he can hit some threes his three-point shot is another one where like you worry about a
26:40little bit i think not as much as josh hart necessarily but like and there's some passing
26:45juice there obviously because you know he played point guard in college he understands what that
26:50position entails but like he's somebody whose game is aging really well and he's coming off the bench
26:56and he's on the other side of 30 and he's still very very effective especially when the team needs
27:00him the most like he'll average eight seven six points a game during the regular season and then in
27:06the playoffs he'll do like this past year where he averaged 11 and and shoot 45 from three and do
27:11it
27:11on five attempts like he's a riser in that way and we've seen josh harvey a riser too in big
27:16big games
27:16whether it's rebounding whether it's getting assists because you mentioned scoring and transition
27:21part of that also is just kicking out to players because he's really good at creating opportunities
27:27for others in transition too so he has a game that i think i just think somebody's gonna have to
27:32take
27:32that spot from him that starting spot you have nobody there now like not not to call him a placeholder
27:37because he's not he's i think a core member of this team we'll talk about the contract and
27:41potential extension on another episode but i think that factors into this but ultimately yeah he's
27:48going to start for now this is a conversation that will need to be addressed at some point though because
27:55you may pay him like a starter and then what you know like he's eligible for i think it's four
28:01for 132
28:02if i'm not mistaken 33 million a year so we'll get we'll get to that i mean the contractual stuff
28:07is going to be interesting that's going to that's going to factor into this discussion in terms of
28:11what you do with josh hart is that we got to start with the contract but that's another episode that's
28:16why good good comment there from from bronx roots uh up in here so it's good next one we got
28:20up
28:21um okay this one is on og this is from killer dogs eny i assume that is east new y
28:26shout out to east
28:27new york brooklyn uh he said i agree on the og take i think this was on the improvement episode
28:34two
28:34and i had this you had oh i had this i had og and he said if he works on
28:39his handle and pull up
28:41he'll be superstar material look i og is a really talented player and i think we saw the confidence
28:49this is a guy who had 71 true shooting through the playoffs ridiculous absolutely ridiculous how good
28:56he was he has one of the iconic sports moments in new york sports history uh yeah of all time
29:03and uh just a big time play i think og found his confidence cutting to the basket early in the
29:09first
29:09round with cat as the hub i thought he finished well i thought you saw this in the finals how
29:13he dunked on
29:14wemby you know the thing with him uh killer dogs and i was bringing this up when we talked about
29:19we've
29:19seen og where he's you know tries to go in his bag a little bit with the handles and the
29:24thing is
29:25it can get tighter and i thought it got better from last year to the year from the year before
29:30the last year his handle got a little bit better turnovers will cut down a bit but sometimes he
29:35still gets in trouble where it looks a little clunky and what we were talking about in that
29:40episode we're talking about improvements with og is getting the handle tighter but not doing too much
29:46right once he moves into a pull-up get to your spots it's about him getting to his spots for
29:50me
29:51right and being able to pull up if he does that in that mid-range area i think he can
29:55be lethal this
29:56is a guy who's model parts of his game after kawai leonard worked out a lot with kawai leonard
30:01knows about kawai leonard there's never any wasted movement with him he's not somebody who's just like
30:05dribbling for six seven seconds and then get into it he knows how to get to a spot so my
30:10thing with
30:10him is with the handle be decisive i think that's something i said last time brian be decisive where you
30:15want to go get that handle tight but don't also try to do too much sometimes less is more i
30:20think
30:20og's got the skill to do it i think he's got the frame i think he has everything in his
30:26skill set to be i mean there's an argument we could be talking about and this is another thing
30:30we could probably talk about down the road if he plays and builds on what he did in this
30:34postseason run because i'm really intrigued for him he's one of my most intriguing players
30:38heading into the series because what did the playoff run do for his confidence now going forward
30:43does he now feel like more confident not to do too much but to understand what he needs to do
30:48to
30:48get to his spots and hit a shot to a point where you could be looking at og and saying
30:53huh i think you and i would agree that he's the mix sometimes he can be their most important player
30:59because of the two-way play play yeah but is there a point where you start looking at him and
31:03saying
31:03he is definitely their second best player it's impossible if he can build upon this so
31:10yeah it's an interesting discussion given that cat's also up for an extension
31:14and the money stuff factors and all this by the way og will be also in a year
31:19yeah and think about the way and brunson now all of you guys but some of y'all thought about
31:23the og
31:23signing a couple years ago ain't nobody complaining about that money right now yeah it is it is just
31:28fine for a three and the guy who performed the way he did in the playoffs so superstar material might
31:33be a little bit of a push where i might go with you killer dogs is can he get to
31:37all-star level i don't
31:39think that is out of the question i don't think that's out of the question this season and i'm
31:44intrigued to see what his confidence from this playoff run does for him in this season that's
31:48what that's what i'll say to that he's been a contender for all-star the last two years i'll
31:51say that much i don't i don't have much to add on it other than he's another one where
31:55that contract is going to be that that contract will tell me a lot what what what what it becomes
32:01in
32:01a in a year because he's going to be extension eligible in a year as is jalen brunson so
32:05a lot unfortunately a lot of these answers while they are like these are basketball conversations
32:10but these also become roster construction conversations business conversations cats
32:17up for an extension josh hart's up for an extension og and jalen brunson will be in a year deuce
32:22mcbride
32:22is now also by the way like that's that's another one too right uh pakom dadi i know it's not
32:29it's
32:30weird to throw him in this conversation but also playing for his nba livelihood right now because
32:35if they decline his fourth year option by halloween then he's essentially a free agent after this year
32:40and then a lot of decisions so there's a lot of moving parts that they'll need to take care of
32:46financially that will factor into this too uh but to the point of og like rounding out his game with
32:52like the the in-between stuff the the that we talked about the the handle so to speak i even
32:57think
32:57there's a level of like secondary tertiary playmaking there on because of the way they cut and the way
33:04guys are cutting to the basket and how he reads offense i think there's even a version of og that
33:10is a better playmaker than we've seen so far too as he ages yeah well i don't agree all right
33:15let's move
33:15on to next we got a couple more here uh next oh this one is about your boy this is
33:21from ipaw364
33:23pecome dottier says pecome pecome's lack of dog if he can't find it he's gone he also needs to play
33:31in the post more i love playing the post always being that simple as the way to fix everything
33:36offensively uh this is your boy you just talked about him why is he my boy you talked about the
33:42fact that he's playing for his nba livelihoods he's just i just what what is i i think more about
33:48the
33:48lack of dog i'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna sound like an ageist here and i'm not trying to be
33:52but
33:53this is just how what's the what's the average age of someone who tells somebody else they need
33:58to play in the post more or that they yeah that they recommend like you know you know what i
34:03mean
34:03age is at least 35 35 at least at least at least and and you know what i remember last
34:10year we were
34:10doing something i don't know if it was a live show i think i know it was a comment and
34:15somebody got mad
34:16because they thought we were laughing the dumb because they were i don't remember who they're
34:19talking about he's the older dude he was he was saying he was was it mikhail it was somebody who
34:25has no business being in the post yeah like is this no business at all not gonna happen you know
34:30what i mean and here's the thing like look look i'll say this
34:41and a lot of players i think when we do these these phrases like somebody's they got a lack of
34:49dog they don't got that dog in them right i think it's a very easy thing to just stamp and
34:53label on
34:53somebody i don't know people do that with cat before right this past year i think yeah some of
34:58y'all said this about cat cat definitely had that dog in him and rose to the occasion when you
35:02guys are
35:02wrong nobody says that i think it's just a very easy blanket thing to say on somebody and the other
35:07easy blanket thing i think to do is oh just put this person in the post like there's just one
35:11kind
35:11of basketball player playing one kind of style is going to fix the problem that's not how it works
35:16man like that's just not how these things go there's more nuance to it than that we've given
35:20credit for some things that we saw good from him in summer league his cutting ability which he has shown
35:25a better f this is going to come down to this with become daddy brian said it i've said it
35:29brian
35:30your boy has to make shots it's really it's really that simple yes it's not even that deep you need
35:37this guy as a wing to be able to help stretch the floor cut play off the other guys on
35:43this team
35:44and hit shots if he hits shots particularly from the outside and helps stretch the floor as a wing
35:50plays reasonably good enough defense he'll be fine right they're not right i'm gonna tell you what mike
35:56brown's not gonna do this season run plays for become daddy in the post that's not going to
36:02happen i can assure you that is not going to happen they need him to show that he can make
36:07winning plays that's like can we just start with that that's we don't gotta go like we're not trying
36:11to feature him they just need him to make winning plays honestly that's it his goal needs to be
36:16make the rotation that that's how do you make the rotation make winning plays thank you like we we
36:22talked about this in our summer league episodes in our little summer league series that we were doing
36:25earlier where it's he needs to cut effectively cut with intent he needs to defend multiple positions
36:32he needs to make an open corner three and he needs to continue to rebound at the rate that he
36:36was
36:36showcasing he can do in summer league i think i think that you talk about swiss army knives like he
36:41has
36:41the body type to do that he doesn't really have the body type for posting up he's listed 210 and
36:45six
36:46foot nine like i don't think he has that wiry athleticism to you know the same way that some
36:52of the elite guys who have it who maybe post up every now and again and guys don't really post
36:56up
36:57like that anymore if you look at the numbers the guys who are really posting up are like yokich and
37:01joel and bead and the guys who you figure hey yeah they're like 280 go post up he's 210
37:07like i haven't seen him do anything really that makes me say oh yeah he'd be great if we just
37:14give
37:15him the ball on the on the low block yeah i guess that would be my question for ipaul is
37:19like what
37:19have you seen that made him think to make you think that like i just don't see it like that's
37:23not that's
37:23not that's not his game like i didn't see that in westchester i didn't really see that in france
37:27like that that's not he i mean and i i don't think he's gonna be like a guy where you
37:33give the ball to
37:34and you're like yeah clear out i think diawara has that potential upside i also don't think that means
37:39he's automatically going to be better because right home could do a bunch of the other things
37:42then that's what we should be talking about so i i think that now to the dog comment i don't
37:48want
37:48to completely dismiss that because i'm not gonna i wouldn't phrase it in that way because i feel like
37:53that's too easy but what i would say is like yes there is a level of intent and maybe intensity
37:58that
37:59i'd like to see out of him this season sure you know in his approach like you want him to
38:04be a little
38:05bit more proactive about making things happen taking some risks and we'll sure yeah like that's what's
38:10ultimately gonna that's fair i think that's fair and we'll see that with him the last thing i'll
38:14say on this before we move on quickly to our final two is when i talk about the little things
38:19are
38:19gonna win look at what mohammede war was able to do last year and what got him on the court
38:24and what
38:25got him the trust and confidence from the coaching staff right it was a running place for him in the
38:30post right they weren't doing that it was him defending rebounding hitting open shots if a comb
38:36daddy shows he could do the same thing he can crack the rotation it really it's it's the war is
38:41about the same size too yeah i think even 10 15 pounds heavier stronger yes not that deep all right
38:47next one see what we got here this one is from luck zin 70 y'all lost me when you
38:54started saying
38:54cleveland and indiana are a bigger threat oh this was from the are the sixers the biggest threat
38:59uh to the nicks in the east up to that point i was giving y'all the benefit of the
39:04doubt why thank you
39:05luxon 70 yeah this is lord lord knows what i would do without your benefit of the doubt
39:09for being delusional new york fans i pray new york stays healthy because they will discover their
39:15true limits this season you know what this sounds like to me i'm just gonna go out here and make
39:21a
39:21little sounds like a wrestling promo that's what that sounds like sounds i mean this is like something
39:27you would tell me before our match at summer slam that's what that sounds tell me you're a sixers fan
39:31without telling me you're a sixers fan okay like you why oh my question back and i've already i'm
39:39not going to belabor this too long what reason do i have what reason do i have to believe that
39:45philly
39:46is a bigger threat than indiana who's got more continuity yes their best players coming back
39:50off of achilles surgery i know how tough that is cleveland who's had more continuity i think something
39:55that is devalued a lot in sports in general not just basketball is continuity yeah it mattered for the
40:00knicks last season having continuity guys who played together yet he tweaked the coach he tweaked
40:05certain things but that mattered you're putting all these new pieces in philadelphia you have age
40:10and guys who don't stay on the court yes and acting like those aren't big question marks or concerns
40:15this has nothing to do with fandom this has to do with real analysis this isn't hot takes we don't
40:21do that
40:21over here this is real analysis so when you look at that i'm talking about facts not fiction
40:26not what it could look like on paper if this happens and that happens and this joel mb has
40:32not played more than 40 games in the season the last three seasons what reason now could he do it
40:36this year sure right if there's a year he's not going to do it it's probably this season this year
40:41lebron james is getting older i think people just want to pencil him that he can do the same stuff
40:46forever i think that's a bit ridiculous i think that's a bit absurd right and this is not a strong
40:52defensive team right where this is not a strong defensive team in the sixers that i trust more
40:59than some of those other teams defensively and also coaching wise my kenny atkinson didn't have
41:05himself a pretty good playoffs but still i might trust some of these other coaches too so i think a
41:09lot it's a lot of change for philadelphia and everybody's just like i like you like how it looks
41:13on paper what do i say all the time this ain't 2k bro this ain't 2k so a lot of
41:18y'all gonna run with
41:19the sixers in 2k a lot of y'all still don't get clapped by people playing with the knicks yeah
41:23because you could turn the injuries off when you play 2k right this isn't that i'm not saying that
41:28there's in a world where the sixers can't be good brian and i've said yeah we said there's there's a
41:33world where they can get to the finals sure but i don't trust their floor more than i trust
41:37cleveland who just went to the easter conference finals and added peyton watson by the way like they
41:42since that conversation they've added peyton watson in exchange for max drewson whatever
41:47now let's see how he is if he's like he was for a 20-game sample or more but we'll
41:51see
41:5122 5 and 3 for if he's like that that's a great pickup for them i mean amazing amazing 18
41:58game fantasy
41:58stretch 18 um but but like and we've been saying cleveland needs a wing because they have guards and
42:05they have bigs you know the bigs aren't exactly um the strongest yeah but like physically physical
42:12athletic wing right and it's like okay now you have a wing they made that trade clearly because
42:18they're like looking around at the conference it's like jalen brown og mikhail you know and just up and
42:25down the up and down these rosters all these different wings that they're gonna have to go
42:28through to potentially win a title and indiana obviously made it to the finals two years ago
42:32and may have a title if tyree saliburton doesn't blow up his achilles so like yeah i i can't look
42:39at
42:39philadelphia with joel and beat who's never been past the second round lebron james who just got to
42:43the second round and it took everything possible granted there were some injury stuff but like that
42:47was also in the western conference and then you which is a weaker conference now than the eastern
42:51conference and then you have like tyreece maxi jalen brown jalen brown just had an amazing regular
42:56season didn't really carry over into the playoffs i love tyreece maxi but i don't know how this is all
43:02going to fit and i love vj edgecomb too he was my favorite player in that draft class going into
43:06the
43:06draft i didn't say he was going to be better than cooper flag but my favorite player to watch
43:09heading into that draft class i said that time and again but saying that since he was in the
43:13bahamian national team and olympic qualifiers two years ago since he was at luji before that here in
43:18new york but like i i can't look at this philly team and say yeah automatically they're going to be
43:24the next biggest threat like i i need to see what that actually looks like first the funny thing about
43:29lux's point he says i pray new york stays healthy because they'll discover their true limits
43:33this season well health matters for everyone and if you're talking about health i've seen the
43:36knicks be healthier than this than this sixers team and so like if you want to say which team
43:42is more health concerns it's absolutely the sixers you're more concerned about their health and age
43:47and all that the knicks players are in their prime yes they're coming off a long season we have talked
43:51on
43:51this show about how health will be a factor this season for them trying to do what they want to
43:56do or
43:56actually defending their title health is always a factor for everyone but i'm gonna try i'm like brian
44:01i don't i don't trust the sixers team right now if you want to trust the process go ahead
44:07i right now i'm just like and and neither of us have picked the knicks to repeat you know what
44:13i
44:13mean like we're not out here saying like yeah they're definitively going to win a championship again
44:18and i'm probably i'm probably not going to say that because of what we've talked about with injuries
44:22and what happens to teams over the course of these builds like it's very hard to keep doing this and
44:27we
44:27haven't seen the team go back to back that being said i don't know if philly's where i'm going to
44:31place the bet and be like yeah they're definitively going to do this now if they look great early on
44:36and it's sensible and and things work out like maybe we maybe we'll have a different discussion
44:41by christmas but even then it's like all right now i have to see this go through the regular season
44:45because joelle and b tends to break down in the playoffs i don't think you're winning a title
44:48without joelle and beat being healthy yeah i don't think so either all right moving on to the last one
44:52we have here this was from smooth star surf uh this is also from the same one ha uh this
44:59this
44:59but this person spaced out their comments dexter and brian are off their rocker great yeah man
45:06lebron could have gone to any team he chose philly because it was the best team to win another
45:13championship another sixer fan got it yeah got it so dexter and brian are doubting the decision of a 23rd
45:19year one of the best ever yeah when do we doubt the decision of him i mean where he could
45:23have gone
45:23and played we didn't even talk about that from what i remember what where do we decide his decision
45:27or what he it's his decision i don't ever fault any player no matter who they are for playing where
45:31they want you can choose wherever you want to work lebron chose way to work yeah we were also people
45:36who were in like the knicks should go get lebron whether they had won or didn't win i was never
45:40on
45:41that plus did they although although this might be for you although i think i think i think he would
45:46have signed with the knicks if the knicks didn't win a championship well rich paul said that and
45:49okay i don't know if that would have been best for the knicks um except i don't agree because i
45:53think
45:53it would have been too much of a distraction i don't know if it would have been good or not
45:56but i
45:57that would have happened plus did they look at the sporting odds yeah we did oh let me also
46:03at the last part this person said here complete idiots yet here you are watching and commenting on our
46:10show okay let me just say this did we look at the sporting arts brian who also does fantastic work
46:17for the action network and is plugged in with this would you please give us the odds of who which
46:23team
46:24right now of us recording this are the betting favorites in the eastern conference could you
46:29please tell me who that team it's a tie between the sixers and the knicks at plus 900 each okay
46:33so it's
46:35a tie between the six so but i think the point that they're making is oh because philly is the
46:41favorite that they're the biggest threat and it's like that's not necessarily how vegas works y'all
46:45are just betting the sixers so they keep like they're trying to get a 50 50 split right in terms
46:50of action they're trying to get enough bets to even out and justify their price and justify that that
46:56plus 900 is a good price and that's not really indicative of philly's going to be better than
47:03everyone in the east that's just indicative of how people might feel about right now y'all feel this
47:09way because you guys overreact to names no matter what so this is right do so there's there's there
47:16you're gonna put your nut your money on it now there aren't sharp bettors out there who are like
47:21betting on philadelphia no they're looking at they're looking at the longer shots they're looking at like
47:27the miamis and detroits and indianas and clevelands and teams like that i think it's hilarious when you
47:32when somebody goes to sporting odds as that's it like that's the best you could do smooth star surf
47:36the best you went was to betting odds and then be incorrect and not know how this stuff actually
47:42works a lot of the action as brian said is on philly this is why the odds are that's not
47:46an
47:46indication for casual better for casual not not from yeah that is on that and that's not an indication
47:52as to one team is better the next nicks had what the i'm trying to remember the next odds coming
47:58out
47:58the east last year i think it was second them and cleveland were the top two i believe it was
48:03second and third i don't know second or third the point is and the knicks i think had fifth or
48:07six
48:07best odds to win it all last year at the before the start of the season so i'll tell you
48:13right now
48:13okay so i have the odds from last year that does it that's not an indicator of of anything if
48:18that if
48:18we went by the indicator of that every year and so i was right so how many people were wrong
48:22about
48:22the knicks last year the sixers were plus one thousand and fourth last year before the season
48:26started great yeah that's actually no that was the year before last year that was the year before
48:32last year i was surprised yeah yeah last year last year philly was not that high last year okc was
48:39plus 240 they were the favorites denver was plus 550 they were second cleveland was plus 750 to win the
48:44east i remember we were talking about that cleveland being the favorites and then the knicks were plus 900
48:50at fourth which is exactly where they are right now pretty much so last year you could say if you
48:56went the knicks were more of a favorite the year before they were third if they went with the odds
49:00of the knicks last year you could have said oh why did somebody take a bet on them or for
49:04whatever
49:04reason here's what i'm gonna say if you were looking at the sporting odds to make your decision
49:09and your argument here you might be the complete idiot that's that's what it might be because that's not
49:15how this stuff works cleveland were the favorites last year they had a good amount
49:19of the handle um and then over the course of the regular season that obviously changed
49:24because cleveland at one point they were looking like are they gonna fall all the way into the play
49:29and then that didn't happen detroit by the way who was the one c was plus 3300 nearly beat cleveland
49:33uh in in a game seven series so like that's not really indicative of anything the year before that
49:40boston was the favorites they lost to the knicks actually that season uh in the playoffs they were
49:44plus 325 which is a crazy short line to get for a team before a season starts um indiana who
49:51nearly won the championship who pushed okc to game seven over plus a thousand over they were
49:58i can't even plus 6600 right so to that point odds philly was plus a thousand that you the odds
50:06you can't
50:06go off the odds that's just that is philly philly was plus a thousand that year their over under was
50:1250 and a half wins and they finished 24 and 58 because everyone got hurt gee i don't think that's
50:16gonna happen this year i think that's a good place that's a good place for us to wrap um sixes
50:22fans
50:23clearly sixes fans really mad uh on this mailbag episode whatever we'll see how things play out
50:28i don't like i don't even get in fact i don't understand why people are so mad i don't but
50:32i don't get i
50:33sixes fans like we said this team is talented enough to get to the finals but this is but this
50:39is the thing in 2026 people only want to hear part of it and we put out a bunch of
50:42clips so people
50:43only hear this is why i don't respond to the short form shit anyway because we put out a bunch
50:47of
50:47clips obviously and people will just react to that where the people that watch the entire show generally
50:52except for apparently these few people uh understand what these conversations are and understand
50:59the nuances that go into these conversations but if sixers fans want to be mad because they
51:04haven't been to the finals and even passed the second round in a quarter century then whatever
51:08they they they have a chance a good chance a decent not a good chance a decent chance
51:12to win their first title since 1983 so have fun knock yourself out i mean rule number one you could
51:19always be mad uh is what i say uh that's gonna do it for this edition of new york got
51:23game
51:24fantastic mailbag react us in the comments uh let us know what you think send us some more
51:28questions comments we'll do another one of these before the season starts i am sure unbelievably
51:33we're about a month away from the start of training camp and media day and all that good stuff just
51:39a
51:39little bit over a month can't believe it's come already it feels like a short off season it feels
51:44really short it's because the next one a title it's one a title you know um so if we feel
51:48like
51:48such a short off season you know what the players must feel like as well too that is brian
