00:04doug car scott anderson 971 thanks for being with us here on a friday in detroit
00:10okay so final preseason game uh tomorrow for the detroit lions and uh cut down day coming on sunday
00:17and then it's uh off to the regular season and joining us now uh former head coach of the dallas
00:23cowboys current nbc sports football broadcaster and host of the new podcast coach to coach jason
00:29garrett joins us here on 971 good morning coach morning guys how are you doing great we're doing
00:35great and we're sitting here in a town that is so desperate for a super bowl participant let alone
00:42a super bowl champion as you look at this detroit lions team do you feel like they are firmly in
00:50the conversation as a legitimate a legitimate super bowl contender yeah i don't think there's any
00:56question about that i just love what what dan campbell has done there and brad holmes and
01:00everything they've built over the last four or so years and uh you know dan was a teammate of mine
01:06for three years with the giants and and i know what he's all about and i think i think the
01:10world has
01:10seen that here in the last uh in the last few years and i love what they've built they took
01:16a step back
01:17last year probably for a lot of different reasons and um you know i think they're trying to rebuild it
01:24i think they're trying to recapture the identity that they've had and um you know they're making
01:30the right personnel changes they're really trying to address that offensive line and get back to that
01:34physical style so you know there'll be some growing pains i think early on in the year uh but once
01:40this
01:40season gets going um he'll get the most out of that team and i think they'll have a chance to
01:45be
01:45right there with everybody at the end of it what was he like as a teammate do you remember him
01:49in the
01:49huddle at all at practice he was awesome he was awesome he's the same guy that you see every day
01:56um he's just just down to earth genuine guy absolutely loves football loves being part of a
02:03team did all the dirty work you know and and i i've told him this i said you know a
02:08lot of people
02:09made a big deal of his initial press conference about biting kneecaps and all of that but you know
02:14that's what he was that's what he was all about as a player and uh you know the energy and
02:20and the
02:20identity of the leader in in great organizations it pervades the entire team and and that's what
02:27and that's what's happened there in detroit so uh i know it's been a long time 1957 since they won
02:34a championship all of that that everybody talks about but if you're a lions fan this is a great time
02:39it's amazing what they've done the last few years and i think there's still great times ahead
02:43you've been around coaches literally your entire life your father was a coach and obviously played
02:48college football into the pros and then you began your coaching career who does dan campbell remind
02:53you of oh i think he's pretty unique i do i think he has he no i do i think
03:00he's got a unique
03:00personality everyone thinks he's kind of like this you know this this tough guy and and all of that
03:06but dan campbell's really smart really really smart he knows football he knows people uh he obviously
03:12knows how to lead he's done all of that and uh you know many of the best players i've been
03:17around
03:17had that same kind of uh those same kinds of qualities i can think about a number of the guys
03:22that i played with uh you know with the cowboys in the 90s those super bowl teams you know daryl
03:28johnston has a lot of those same qualities mark two and a you know those kinds of guys who are
03:33really
03:34the the fabric of your team the guys that make such a difference on teams that have success and
03:40you know win super bowls and dan has all those traits uh but he's unique uh he's a fantastic
03:46storyteller he's so much fun to be around and you know one thing that you know those players respect
03:52him and those players will run through the wall for him and uh you know it's just fun to see
03:56him in
03:56action jason garrett with us here on 97 one the lions fans are concerned about the secondary the revamped
04:02offensive line and those are questions that need to get answered and but as we talk about
04:08every team has questions and concerns somewhere how worried should lions fans be about the secondary
04:16with terry an arnold situation uh kirby joseph and brian branch banged up cade mays comes in to to
04:22boost the center spot he gets hurt are these potentially killers for them or are they just
04:28like every other team there's questions on every roster well i i i think you you say it right
04:34there are issues in 32 cities and um you know some issues are more dire than others uh i i
04:41think the
04:42best team the teams that have a chance to to really be in at the end have cornerstone players
04:46on both sides of the ball that the team rallies around hey that guy playing left tackle for the
04:52lions he's pretty damn good the quarterback the running back you know saint brown will you i mean
04:57there's a lot of there's a lot of people on that team on both sides of the ball you know
05:01hutch keep
05:02going and uh you know you know there there's so many guys that are that are figures on these teams
05:08that that you know the guys can look to they're the natural leaders they're the best players they
05:12represent everything you want so they have plenty of those guys they do have some questions and uh you
05:19know i think they've done a really good job trying to address the offensive line to get back to that
05:23identity that they played with and to me that's great leadership by both brad and dan to say okay
05:29these are the issues how do we want to play how do we want to allocate our resources they're in
05:34the
05:34process of doing that the issue is the injuries as you mentioned and you can't be deep everywhere
05:40so hopefully you can survive some of those obviously the terry and arnold situation impacts detroit
05:47that's a that's a potentially a cornerstone player form that that's not there anymore you add that
05:52the other secondary injuries so there become questions the biggest thing is can you survive
05:59them with the cornerstone players and the coaching that you have and and i believe detroit can it's a
06:03long year a lot of those guys will come back at some point they'll find replacements they'll figure
06:08out how to do it i'm really optimistic about their team what do the lions have in jared goff and
06:14if
06:14he's special what makes him special jared goff yes i i love jared goff um you know he came out
06:26in the
06:262016 draft and um and you know that was the year that we took dak prescott in dallas and uh
06:34so we
06:34spent a lot of time with him during the draft process he obviously was taken first so we didn't
06:39have a chance at him but what i loved about him in college was um they didn't necessarily block real
06:46well for him and they did a lot of rpos where they threw the ball down the field on rpos
06:51so long story
06:53you'd watch his games and there are 20 times in the game where he's just getting the crap kicked out
06:58of
06:58them you know and he's standing he's standing in there making throws i'm like god bless it and at the
07:04time he was he was tall and thin and young he he played as an 18 year old freshman and
07:10uh you know
07:11so that was the big takeaway for me and i think the league has seen that from him over the
07:17course of
07:17his career i think they've seen a guy who's tough natural leader uh a guy that the team responds to
07:24he
07:24can make all the throws when he gets going i mean he's a fantastic passer we've seen that we saw
07:30it in
07:31la and we when we continue to see it in detroit so you know for me he represents that team
07:37really
07:37well because of his toughness because of what he's all about and uh you know i did an interview with
07:43him uh i guess it was last year maybe two years ago and you know i brought out my my
07:49evaluation of
07:51him coming out of school and there was a picture of him where he literally looked like the paper boy
07:55he was 18 years old and and i you know i said you know whatever that is that's 10 years
08:01ago now
08:02you know a lot's happened since then and you know the the takeaway i got from the conversation was
08:10a lot has has happened and he's grown a lot and he's toughened up even more and you know he's
08:17embracing the scars that he's had throughout his career and what you have now is a guy who clearly is
08:22the cornerstone player at the most important position that everybody looks to and rallies
08:27around and that's exactly what you're looking for in an organization you just spoke with dan
08:32campbell on the coach to coach podcast and i want to get into some details with that in a minute
08:35i don't
08:36know if the topic came up but you also cut down day is sunday what is that like for dan
08:42campbell what
08:42is that like for a coach it's tough yeah it's really tough you know i was fortunate to play 14
08:50years in
08:50the nfl so i made a lot of teams but i got cut from a lot of teams too i
08:54got cut early in my career
08:55middle part of my career end of my career and uh you know those are not those are not good
09:01days
09:01and uh if you think about all those players in that lion's locker room and all around the league
09:07they've been dreaming about doing this since they're six years old this is what they wanted
09:11to do they're living out their dream and and when you come in and say hey you know um you
09:17can't do
09:17this anymore or you can't do it here or you're not good enough those are hard conversations
09:22to have and um you know we always try to be very thoughtful about that and very sensitive
09:28to where these guys are and try to help them in any way by handling it the right way and
09:34giving them
09:34um you know the feedback that we think can help them going forward and like i said because i was
09:40in
09:40those shoes so it's not an easy day for anybody there's always a somber feeling
09:45around the team there's obviously there's a lot of elation too because it means some guys made the
09:51team so you want to be respectful to all those different emotions that guys are going through
09:55and then the next day we lace them up we get out to practice and we get going but it's
10:01not an easy
10:01time you spend a lot of time in dallas you've got to have a good jerry jones story
10:11can you share one uh you know i think there's a misperception about jerry jones i think people
10:19think that he's meddling into everything and all of that uh i learned so much from him during my time
10:24there i was fortunate to play there for eight years and i coached there for uh for 13 so i
10:30was around him
10:31a lot in different capacities and um you know he's someone i learned a ton from um you know he
10:38he's
10:39clearly been incredibly successful in his life uh he's someone who i learned a lot about risk taking
10:44from you know he's a very bold guy he's unafraid to take chances and do different things things that
10:50haven't been done before and you know if you follow the nfl you know how he's marketed teams how he
10:55got
10:56involved in the tv contract um he's made a lot of money for a lot of people over the last
11:00couple
11:01generations and uh and that that goes to his willingness to take risks and willingness to be
11:07bold so when you get around a guy like that if you if you listen and watch and observe uh
11:14you can
11:15grow a lot and i'm really grateful for that relationship jason garrett host of the coach to coach
11:20podcast you had dan campbell on last week lions fans can can get it wherever they get their podcast
11:27youtube spotify apple podcast wherever you get them what stood out about that interview with dan
11:33campbell last week well the issue with the interview is it literally could have gone on for eight hours
11:38i believe it i've had people i've had people who know us both say that they reached out you know
11:44it's
11:44like you guys were just getting started because you know we were together for three years and i consider
11:49him a friend uh you know a great teammate and and someone we shared some some great times together
11:55and there are so many incredible stories um that that he shared a few of them of growing up and
12:01the
12:01people that were impactful in his life and you know i i think that i know it resonated with me
12:06hopefully
12:07it resonated with everybody uh who was listening but but he has so much wisdom he's such a smart guy
12:13he's been around really good teams and good coaches and good players he knows what it's supposed to look
12:18like and then he has he has courage of his conviction about you know believing what what he wants his
12:24team to be about and how you lead and how you relate to people and how you get the most
12:28out of people and
12:29so it's just fun for me as a guy who's known him for a long time to see him in
12:33this role doing this
12:34and making a huge impact and you know close your eyes go back four years go back five years go
12:40back a lot of
12:41years in detroit there hasn't been a ton of success and for him to come in and kind of put
12:46his stamp
12:47on that team and on that city it's just so much fun and he shares so much about that about
12:53that
12:53journey uh really fun for me to be a part of that that conversation and one final thing on the
12:58coach
12:58to coach podcast you're not just talking to football coaches you're talking as coaches from
13:02all walks of life the ones that stand out to me that you've had on are joe girardi and joe
13:06madden from
13:07major league baseball what is it like to cross reference notes with them uh across different
13:13sports well it's great and then those guys are both friends of mine and i've gotten to know them
13:19through the years and you know we had cory close who just won the women's national championship in
13:24basketball at ucla we had kelly amonte hillers the women's lacrosse coach at northwestern and and so
13:31many others and um you know when i was coaching i spent a lot of time with coaches in other
13:36sports i spent a lot of time with coach k and larry brown and some of these other guys who
13:42have
13:42been so successful and and one of the one of the the thesis of coach to coach is that the
13:48leadership
13:48principles the team building principles the cultural building principles they apply not only
13:55in other sports but they apply to all walks of life and so we're not talking to these coaches about
14:00you know what happened in yesterday's game or who's going to start at left tackle next week that's
14:04not what the conversation is it's about their influences how they've learned and grown you
14:10know throughout their life as as leaders and what they're trying to what's their vision for their
14:14team or their organization and again those things apply you know across sports and across you know
14:21all different all different um businesses and all different organizations in life and to talk to the
14:28the baseball guys what i love about it is they all share stories so it's not a lot of platitudes
14:33it's it's storytelling and this is what i learned from that experience this is what i was thinking
14:39about that and then afterwards it came through or didn't come through and as a result moving forward
14:45you know maybe we did things differently so there's a lot of there's a lot of different lessons learned
14:49and for me as someone who's always thought a lot about leadership both as a quarterback and then as a
14:55coach uh they're invaluable conversations i love talking to these guys the podcast is coach to
15:00coach with jason garrett youtube spotify apple podcast wherever you get your podcast we'll see
15:05on nbc thanks for joining us hey great talking to you guys keep up the great work thank you coach
