00:00all right guys welcome back to grow the earth and today we're going to talk about well an issue
00:04we've had here in the garden and something you may experience yourself if you are planting potatoes
00:13now my last video and i'm going to link that here it'll be somewhere up here
00:18that we planted in the ground you know in that video i made it a point to let you know
00:24that
00:25while these potatoes in the ground before they break the ground we don't want to water too much
00:29because that can make them rot in place well guess what happens i planted my potatoes in here
00:36and two days later we got a really really bad rainstorm came through and pretty much
00:42it rained off and on for probably two or three days well guess what happened our potatoes ended
00:50up rotting in the ground now to confirm that i dug down and i found one of the photos and
00:55let me tell you rotting potato is a absolutely horrible smell when you're planting potatoes
01:02not only do you need to not water it yourself too much but we need to kind of look ahead
01:08in our
01:09you know in our rain schedule and make sure that there's not any rain just a few days out
01:14because when you put potatoes in the ground it's going to take probably three to five days depending
01:20for those uh new sprouts that are coming out of potato to break ground so if we inundate this soil
01:27with water before that happens and before the potato starts sending out roots then all we're doing is
01:34rotting its food source underground as you can see here uh the sweet potato that i put in at the
01:42exact
01:42same time seems to be doing just fine it looks like it's loving life now of course it did have
01:50a hard
01:51time we just barely had some of these sprouts that broke ground and then it kind of stalled for a
02:00while
02:00and that was because of all the water that was just sitting there just trying to absorb into that sweet
02:06potato and luckily it still had enough that it didn't rot this is one of those examples
02:12where you can do everything right the weather has a different story for you so before you plant
02:18potatoes before you plant some other things that could possibly be over watered we need to look in
02:25our outlook on our weather and make sure that we're not going to let nature um destroy our food first
02:34so now i've got to replant these and of course now i'm looking in my five day outlook to kind
02:40of make
02:40sure that we don't have a whole lot of weather ahead before i plant my potatoes so guys as always
