00:00all right guys welcome back to grow the earth and today we're going to be planting carrots
00:04but before we get started i want to thank kirsten my youngest daughter for actually she's been the
00:10one who's been filming me for the past few videos and i just want to thank her for helping me
00:14out
00:14today and doing these videos with me and uh you know we make it a family affair around here in
00:20almost everything we do but back to the subject at hand we're going to be planting carrots now
00:26carrots are either one of those things that you have figured out all the secrets on and you grow
00:29really well or you literally hate them because they never come up or they come so sporadically that
00:36you never get a good harvest out of them so today we're going to go through the secrets that i
00:41know
00:41that help us grow carrots well every year and those things that you're going to learn along the way as
00:49you plant carrots but i'm going to give you those things right right here in this video now the first
00:54thing we're going to start off with is probably one that most people mess up and that is whenever
01:01we're dealing with carrots you've got to have loose soil so loose soil is probably one of the things
01:09that people mess up the most simply because without loose soil the carrots can't grow straight
01:16the carrots can't grow long and it's because you're dealing with hard soil being a root crop
01:24the the carrot will take the path of least resistance like electricity like water like
01:29almost anything else on this earth it's going to take the path of least resistance and that's the way
01:35you will see whenever you pull your carrots out you ever see a carrot that is forked or if you
01:41ever
01:41seen a carrot that has done spirals or is growing down and then it kind of cuts off to the
01:46right or
01:46the left or anything like that that carrot comes and when it reaches a point to where it can't go
01:53any
01:53further it will pick the direction that it can grow in and that's what it's going to do so our
02:01first task
02:03is to loosen the soil up and we got to do it about five to six inches down
02:11and we got to make sure that we can get our get it all done nice and well because without
02:22this
02:22you're going to find short little stubby carrots that are this big around and they're not going to be
02:29they're not going to grow to their full potential without loose soil now kind of the counter reactive
02:36to that is you also need this soil to be have enough structure to it that it can support the
02:49carrots
02:50because if you get these nice green tops on there which you should if you're growing a nice big carrot
02:57and if the carrot goes to try and fall over because it can't support it because of the roots have
03:04got
03:04super super loose soil then you're going to end up with the same thing you're going to end up with
03:09in this form carrot and it's not going to grow to its full potential because the soil is way too
03:16loose
03:18so you know there's kind of a uh with most anything in life there is a balance to all of
03:24it
03:25and we just need to make sure that we find that balance of loose enough soil that our carrots can
03:31grow
03:32in and enough soil structure that when our carrots start to grow they just don't flop over and start
03:42growing all wonky all right so now that we've got our soil broken up and that's going to leave us
03:47with a nice kind of crumbly texture and like i said this should be five to six inches down because
03:53we don't want our carrots running any kind of hard compacted soil otherwise they're going to change
04:00directions and then we're going to get some funky looking carrots the next major thing that we're going
04:06to need to do is we're going to talk about fertilizer now this is a plant tone organic like
04:13all-purpose which is fine uh we are going to need nitrogen because we want our tops to get nice
04:20and
04:20green because that is the solar panel that's going to feed our root our root starts out first then it
04:26puts up the green and the green is going to make the root grow which is what a carrot is
04:30of course and so
04:32as much as the potassium and the phosphorus are important and all those little micronutrients are
04:39we do have to have a bit of nitrogen in the soil so that it can pull from that to
04:46grow our greenery on
04:47top which is going to then then feed our our carrot and make it grow well so if you've ever
04:56grown
04:56carrots and you have these puny tops and then you realize afterward that you know the carrot down
05:03below doesn't look that impressive either or you found that you've got one out of the group that grew
05:08really big luscious green and the root down below is like wonderful that was from lack of fertilization
05:14that was from the lack of the nitrogen in the soil and sometimes that is also because you had hard
05:21compacted soil so we're just going to sprinkle this stuff in now i've got uh probably two cups here
05:30i'm going to fertilize this relatively thick because this is pretty new soil so i'm going to
05:38give it more than what i normally would because i kind of don't know where this is at and it's
05:43going
05:43to give me a good base for where i want it to be now you would probably do normally half
05:49of this much
05:49but again i'm kind of over compensating from the fact of this is new soil and i have found that
05:56this newer soil is lacking a little nutrition and that's what we want to make sure we've got
06:00plenty of for these carrots now that we've got our fertilizer down on top of our soil we need to
06:06turn around and kind of mix that in now we don't have to go in and mix it in really
06:12really deep
06:12because our water and our bacteria and stuff like that that is in our soil is going to carry that
06:21down
06:23and it's going to bring it to our roots to uh help everything kind of grow
06:30so we don't need to dig it in too deep just into the top couple of inches will be fine
06:37uh we don't have to get outrageous with it you know you get to kind of take out some of
06:43your
06:43frustrations on the soil and kind of stab it and move it around and get our mix in nice and
06:50good
06:51so now that we've mixed all that fertilizer into our soil we need to go around and you know i'm
06:57just
06:57going to do this with my hand because it's available i have hands and it's just easier
07:04because of what small bed we have here but we're going to level everything out now this is an
07:11important step because if we have a bunch of hills and valleys in our carrots you'll have water pooling
07:19around certain ones and you'll have other ones that are just going to be completely dry
07:23dry and so we want our soil to be very as level as we can get it that way we
07:31don't have wet and dry
07:32spots and we don't have certain ones that are drowning and certain ones that are starving for
07:35water all right so now that we've got that all leveled out it's time to plant our carrots
07:41now this is probably the simplest way and probably one of the better tips that i can give you
07:47now i've got these carrots here of course when you buy carrots they come in like a pack of a
07:51thousand
07:51there there's so many of them it's not even funny so there are two different ways you can go about
07:58this we can go about this with regular seeds or we can go with a seed tape now if you
08:06go with regular
08:06seeds what we're going to do is we're going to sprinkle these guys on as thinned out as we we
08:12can
08:15we're just going to lay these on top of the soil
08:19and when they start growing we're going to thin them out or you can use seed tape which is going
08:25to get your spacing problem with that is is once they come up if certain ones don't come up
08:31you're kind of stuck out so when we're sprinkling our seeds in we need to sprinkle them in a row
08:38and
08:38give about about four to five inches in between each row will be fine this is another tip for you
08:43guys after you've set your your seeds down in the rows we are going to cover them with a very
08:51light
08:53you can think of this almost like a seed starting mixture we need something that's very light and we
08:59need something that is going to retain moisture
09:04so we're just going to sprinkle that over the top of our rows in a really really kind of light
09:10sprinkling we don't need anything really really heavy
09:18we don't need a whole lot of it we don't need a real thick layer of it we just need
09:23something
09:24really light to cover these seeds now typically you would just
09:32kind of sprinkle these on top and be done with it but i have found that doing this
09:40this layer of really light material
09:46helps keep them a little wetter and helps them
09:52to uh have a nice easy structure to grow through
09:59versus having to deal with the soil uh because if we have you know soil that is
10:10maybe a little bit harder maybe it is not um not quite as light an area as we'd like
10:20we're going to struggle for these to come up because probably one of the biggest things
10:26that most of your people who plant carrots miss is the fact that carrots are very very sensitive
10:35when it comes to moisture levels when you plant a carrot seed if that carrot seed dries out
10:42at all and i mean we're talking about half a day if it dries out it will not germinate
10:51that seed will end up dying and not grow a plant just simply because of half a day to a
11:00day of that
11:01seed drying out and not having moisture near it so to combat that you can go do two different ways
11:10we can either put cardboard over our planting area wood a shade cloth whatever it may be
11:19we need to block the sun and we need to keep this soil moist so these these seeds will not
11:25dry out
11:25and they will grow the carrots that we need all right so like i said i'm going to cover mine
11:32with a piece of cardboard
11:34and you should find a box that is going to be big enough and wide enough that it's going to
11:40cover your entire planting area
11:42now we are an amazon family there is probably this driver probably knows our address better than anybody
11:48in the world other than maybe us so we always have plenty of boxes but we are going to open
11:58our box up
12:00and on every box of course there is a seam where that box was glued together so we're going to
12:08rip
12:09along that seam and it'll come open really well
12:13and then we're going to look at that lay it over the top of our bed and figure out
12:18well we need to start by cutting here
12:23now if you're like me and the wind is always blowing where you're at
12:29we need to make this box fit inside of our of our planting bed as you can see this is
12:36a relatively
12:37small bed you don't need a lot of room to grow carrots you can grow these in a pot
12:43if you don't really want a whole bunch of them because all you need is loose soil
12:48a good amount of depth six to eight inches of probably maximum depth on a carrot and you need
12:55to keep it moist so i'm going to cut this and then i'll show you the results of our arts
13:02and craft
13:02project here and we'll see you back in a moment now that we've cut our cover i it's important
13:12we need to give these a nice water now don't come in here with your your high pressure sprayer or
13:20anything because all you'll do is you'll end up pushing all these carrots to whatever end of this bed
13:27is lower than the rest so we're going to give it a nice low setting
13:34and just come in here and give everything a nice wet we don't have to drown it after we water
13:40these
13:40down they got our soil nice and moist we're going to take our cover
13:48and we're going to lay that in here now i've cut this kind of tight that way it will
13:54kind of hold itself in here and since i'm using cardboard i'm going to wet that a little bit
14:05because i want that cardboard to have some weight and i want it to stay where i put it at
14:13now
14:13whichever method you use whether you use cardboard or you use wood or shade cloth or whatnot
14:22germination on these is about four to seven days you should pretty much be checking every day because
14:28you want to make sure that your moisture level is not diminished so pick it up water every day put
14:35it
14:35back down once you start seeing sprouts take this off and either save it for next time throw it away
14:44you know whatever you need to do but after we start seeing sprouts we need to remove this cover
14:50otherwise we will smother those carrots and they won't grow once they start coming up if you have
14:57done seed tape method you can skip this step once they come up we need to thin those out
15:06to where we have an inch and a half on each side of those carrots in order for them to
15:12grow not thinning
15:13them out will give you small carrots that you're not going to be happy with if you really really
15:19hate to thin out anything use seed tape they make it for carrots all day every day use that uh
15:27just
15:28don't be surprised if you don't have ones come up in certain area and you have bare spots this is
15:34the
15:34best way to keep from having bare spots but it requires a little more work so guys after you
15:40have done this if you follow this video to a tee you will get nice long carrots that you can
15:47enjoy
15:48for a long time so as always i thank you for joining me today thank my my youngest daughter for
15:55uh helping
15:55me film and i want you to pray over your family prayer view garden and have a great day
