00:00When it comes to sports video games, we're used to seeing annual releases.
00:04Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, but bowling?
00:09Well, Farside Studios apparently thinks we need another one.
00:13PBA Pro Bowling 2027 has officially been announced and it's coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox on December 17,
00:212026.
00:22And while the announcement might initially make you think, didn't we just get one of these?
00:26There are actually some interesting things going on with this new entry.
00:30So today, we're going to take a look at PBA Pro Bowling 2027, what it's offering, and whether this annual
00:36bowling release might actually be worth paying attention to.
00:40Before I break everything down, let's take a look at the official announcement trailer.
00:45Just what you want to get going on TV. The lights are on, the pressure is cranked up.
00:53Comes through in a big spot. Strikes in the tent and the crowd's into it.
00:57We're going to need another strike to put the pressure on.
01:04Got it!
01:10They'll be looking for another one here.
01:12That's how you turn a big game into a great one.
01:16Dang, I did!
01:26You can see it from the moment it left their hand.
01:36You can see it from the moment it left their hand.
01:46Watch for the history books!
01:54So there we have it.
01:56And while this isn't exactly the most explosive game announcement we've seen this year,
02:00there's actually quite a bit packed into that trailer, and the information Farsight has released about the game.
02:06PBA Pro Bowling 2027 is being positioned as a serious bowling simulation.
02:11The developers are emphasizing real oil patterns, lane physics, ball dynamics, and skill-based gameplay.
02:18And that last part is particularly interesting.
02:21The conditions on the lane aren't supposed to stay exactly the same throughout your game.
02:25As you bowl, oil carries down the lane, meaning that the shot you used earlier might not work later.
02:31So you'll have to adjust your line, your speed, your axis rotation, and your rev rate.
02:36In other words, the game isn't simply asking you to throw the ball straight down the lane and hope for
02:41a strike.
02:42You're supposed to actually read the lane and adapt.
02:45And if Farsight can make those mechanics feel natural rather than overly complicated,
02:50that could make for a pretty deep bowling experience.
02:52Another major part of PBA Pro Bowling 2027 is customization.
02:58You'll be able to create your own bowling identity using different bowling styles and perks.
03:03Those perks can be equipped and upgraded to give your bowler a competitive advantage.
03:07And then there's the bowling ball itself.
03:10Farsight says the game features more than 300 replicas of real bowling balls,
03:14including equipment from brands such as Storm, Brunswick, and Motive.
03:18You'll also be able to customize things like drill layouts and ball surfacing.
03:23So for the serious bowling fan, there appears to be a lot of room to create an arsenal specifically suited
03:28to your playstyle.
03:29Then we have the PBA Tour Mode.
03:32The goal here is to build your career and prove that you have what it takes to compete with the
03:36pros.
03:37You'll earn PBA points at events and compete on a season leaderboard.
03:41And once a season ends, another one begins.
03:43So rather than simply having a career mode that ends once you've reached the top,
03:47the game appears to be designed around continually competing for that player of the year distinction.
03:53That's a pretty good way of giving the career mode some longevity.
03:56And Farsight is also promising an overhauled career mode,
03:59so it'll be interesting to see exactly how much has changed compared to previous entries.
04:05Of course, bowling doesn't have to be a solo experience.
04:08PBA Pro Bowling 2027 will feature online leagues, tournaments, and ranked play.
04:13The online leagues are designed around the traditional league experience,
04:17allowing you to compete week after week and track your progress.
04:21And ranked play gives the more competitive players a reason to keep coming back.
04:25That could end up being one of the most important aspects of the game.
04:29Because while a detailed bowling simulation can be fun on its own,
04:33having a community of players to compete against can dramatically increase how long you stick with it.
04:38And if you're a fan of professional bowling,
04:41PBA Pro Bowling 2027 will feature 38 real PBA pros.
04:46That's six more than the previous lineup, according to the game's official website.
04:50There are also more PBA events, new venues, and more than 30 new bowling balls being added.
04:56The game is also getting new commentary from official PBA CW commentators Rick Allen and Kyle Sherman.
05:03And Farsight says graphics, animations, and sound quality have all been improved as well.
05:09So this isn't literally just PBA Pro Bowling 2026 with the year changed on the title screen.
05:15There are some genuine additions here.
05:17And this is where I think the biggest discussion around PBA Pro Bowling 2027 is going to be.
05:23Why another annual release?
05:25One commenter on the Blues News announcement joked,
05:28Because of course, we need annual new releases for bowling.
05:31And honestly, I get it.
05:33If you're someone who brought PBA Pro Bowling 2026,
05:36you might be looking at this announcement and asking,
05:39Why should I upgrade?
05:40And that's a completely fair question.
05:42With something like Madden or NBA 2K,
05:45players expect annual changes because real-world rosters, seasons, and teams are constantly changing.
05:51Bowling doesn't necessarily have that same expectation.
05:54So Farsight has to convince existing players that these improvements are substantial enough to justify buying another game.
06:01There's also an interesting discussion surrounding the game's technology.
06:05Farsight is continuing to use the proprietary engine it developed for the previous game,
06:10rather than switching to something like Unreal Engine 5.
06:13And one Blue News commenter brought up an interesting possibility.
06:17Bowling physics are actually pretty complicated.
06:19You've got the ball interacting with the lane, changing oil conditions,
06:24the pins interacting with each other,
06:25and the need to make those pin collisions look and behave realistically.
06:29So while using an established engine might seem like the obvious choice,
06:33having technology specifically designed around bowling physics could actually make sense.
06:38Of course, the important thing isn't what engine the game uses.
06:42It's how good the game actually feels.
06:44If the ball and pin physics are convincing,
06:47most players probably aren't going to care what technology is underneath the hood.
06:51And there's another interesting point raised in the comments.
06:54One former league bowler argued that bowling is at its best when it's social.
06:58You go bowling with friends, you eat, you hang out, you compete.
07:03You don't necessarily take it incredibly seriously.
07:05And that's where I think PBA Pro Bowling 2027 could potentially leave some players behind.
07:11Because everything Farsight is showing here is focused on the simulation side of bowling.
07:15And that's perfectly fine.
07:17But there's also a lot of potential in the arcade side of the sport.
07:21Think about the bowling minigames we've seen in other games over the years.
07:25Sometimes bowling is more fun when it's ridiculous.
07:27When you're competing with friends, when the rules don't matter quite as much,
07:31when you're laughing at somebody's terrible shot rather than analyzing their rev rate.
07:35I'd love to see a modern bowling game embrace that side of the sport too.
07:39But that's not necessarily what PBA Pro Bowling 2027 is trying to be.
07:45Despite my skepticism about another annual release,
07:48I think PBA Pro Bowling 2027 is worth keeping an eye on.
07:52The combination of changing lane conditions, detailed ball mechanics, customization,
07:56a revamped career mode, online leagues, ranked play,
08:00and a large selection of real bowling equipment gives the game a pretty solid foundation.
08:05And with 38 PBA Pros, new venues, new events, new balls, and upgraded presentation,
08:11there are some meaningful additions here.
08:13But I think everything ultimately comes down to one thing.
08:17How much better does it actually feel?
08:19If PBA Pro Bowling 2027 delivers genuinely improved physics, presentation, career progression,
08:25and online play, then maybe Farsight can justify releasing another game so soon.
08:30But if the differences end up being mostly cosmetic,
08:33then I can absolutely understand why someone would stick with the previous game.
08:37PBA Pro Bowling 2027 is scheduled to release on December 17th, 2026,
08:43and the game is already available to wishlist on Steam.
08:46There's also an alpha signup available for players who want to participate in testing.
08:51So while I'm not ready to say this is a must-buy yet,
08:54I'm definitely interested in seeing how this one develops.
08:57Because let's be honest,
08:58there aren't exactly a ton of major bowling simulations competing for our attention.
09:03If Farsight can continue improving the formula and make the new mechanics actually matter,
09:08PBA Pro Bowling 2027 could be a surprisingly deep sports game.
09:12But what do you think?
09:13Are you interested in PBA Pro Bowling 2027?
09:17Do you think bowling games need annual releases,
09:19or should Farsight spend several years developing one major new installment?
