00:00Former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming's departure from DAP is a major loss for the party as
00:05it struggles to chart its own political direction, says Urimay Chairman P. Ramasamy.
00:11In a Facebook post, Ramasamy said Ong was an important figure in election preparations
00:15and voting trend analysis, with his political science background making him a key asset
00:21to DAP.
00:22Ramasamy claimed Ong's independent views increasingly differed from DAP's top leadership, saying
00:28the former two-term MP did not fit into the bill of being a party loyalist.
00:32He also credited Ong with being among the first to identify declining Indian support for DAP,
00:38which Ramasamy attributed to the marginalisation and removal of Indian leaders.
00:43Ramasamy said Ong's departure came as DAP had, in his view, succumbed to Malay hagemony and
00:49appeared seemingly clueless about charting an independent political direction based on dignity
00:54and pride.
00:55The former Penang DAP deputy chairman added that Ong remains well-respected outside DAP's
01:01circles.
01:01Ong announced his resignation today after about 14 years with DAP.
01:06He said he did not plan to join another party or contest in GE16.
01:11However, Ong said he would help former UMNO Youth Chief Kairi Jamaluddin campaign in GE16
01:162017 if Kyrie was given a seat to contest.
