Learn how to create a Pipe Network from existing objects (Lines) in Autodesk Civil 3D. In this step-by-step tutorial, you will learn how to convert existing linework into a Civil 3D pipe network and set up pipes, structures, elevations, and network styles.

This tutorial is useful for Civil Engineers, CAD Operators, BIM Modelers, Surveyors, and Civil 3D beginners** working on utility and infrastructure projects.

This Tutorial:

✅ Create Pipe Network from Objects
✅ Convert Lines into Pipes
✅ Add Structures / Manholes
✅ Set Pipe & Structure Properties
✅ Adjust Pipe Elevations
✅ Apply Pipe Network Styles
✅ View Pipe Network in Plan & Profile
✅ Civil 3D Utility Network Workflow

00:09From the crest of the Sycamore Heights Road we will need to drain the road back towards
00:15Woodside View and then down Woodside View to tie in to McAllister Boulevard. We will use this
00:24polyline shown in the drawing to create the new drainage run. We could create the network directly
00:31from a polyline but using a feature line will give us more control. From the create design panel select
00:39feature line then create feature lines from objects. Select the start of the white polyline
00:46and then press enter. Set the site to none and give the feature line a name if you wish to
00:52keep it in
00:53the drawing. Select erase existing entities and assign elevations and click OK. We will assign
01:05elevations from the finished ground surface. Don't insert intermediate points as we only want structures
01:13at our vertices. Click OK. Now we want to edit the feature line elevations. Select the feature line
01:22and click on elevation editor from the contextual ribbon tab. The feature line elevations are
01:29currently on the ground. We need our pipes to have a cover depth so they are below the ground.
01:35Select all the rows in the editor and set the increment value to 4 feet as shown. Then use the
01:43lower button
01:44to drop all of the elevations by 4 feet. Close the editor. Now we can create our new network. From
01:54the home ribbon tab,
01:56create design panel, choose pipe network then create pipe network from object.
02:03Select the feature line at the start of the line and press enter to accept the flow direction.
02:10Set the network name to storm 2. Select Iowa City storm as the network parts list.
02:19For the pipe to create, select 12 inch concrete pipe. For the structure to create, select concentric structure,
02:3260 inch diameter. Set the reference surface to the finished ground. We will not assign an alignment.
02:45Select erase existing entity. For the vertex elevations, select use vertex elevations and then
02:53choose outside top as the vertex elevation reference.
02:57The feature line elevations will represent the outside top of the pipes. Click OK and the network
03:05will be added to the drawing. At the junction location, we now have two manholes, one from our original
03:13network and one from the new network. Select a pipe and structure from the network. Right click and choose
03:22select similar. Right click again and choose object viewer and review the two networks.
03:33Although they appear to meet at this junction, they are in fact two separate networks.
03:38We will now need to edit our networks to create a single network and refine our design.
