00:01Fighting flares again. The U.S. strikes Iran.
00:04Iran fires back at American military targets.
00:07Why, the Strait of Hormuz is once again at the center of the fight.
00:11Plus, a deadly flood at the Grand Canyon.
00:13Hikers airlifted out, others still unaccounted for.
00:17Well, we know about the search this morning.
00:19And Google makes it official.
00:21Lake America is now showing up on Google Maps in the U.S.
00:25Canada's answer? A very big sign.
00:27We're always going to protect our sovereigns. Always.
00:31And we'll never ever back down from a bully. Ever.
00:36The stories that matter. Clear and credible.
00:39From across the country to around the world.
00:42These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:48Hello everyone, I'm Simone Del Rosario.
00:50We begin this morning with renewed fighting in the Middle East.
00:53After U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz.
00:57And Iran responded with attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan.
01:00Iran fired nearly a dozen missiles toward those U.S. bases in Jordan overnight.
01:05Jordan's military says it intercepted at least eight, but some did make it through the country's defenses.
01:12Officials did not say where those missiles hit, but say there were no casualties.
01:16The United Arab Emirates also says its air force responded to a drone approaching from Iran over its territorial waters.
01:24The UAE's defense ministry is also denying Iranian media reports that one of its key air bases was targeted by
01:31missiles.
01:32So far this morning, the Strait of Hormuz itself is quiet after U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers
01:39near Lyric Island Sunday, ending a month-long lull in U.S. military strikes.
01:44U.S. Central Command says members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the
01:50strait.
01:51President Trump announced last week that U.S. forces had cleared the strait of mines and warned Iran against putting
01:57more in the waterway.
01:58The death toll from last week's catastrophic flooding in Nepal and Tibet has now topped 900, with more than 4
02:06,700 people still missing.
02:08And rescuers are now focusing on workers who may be trapped inside tunnels at damaged hydropower projects.
02:14Nepal's disaster agency says the death toll there now stands at 903, while they're still looking for 4,200 other
02:21people.
02:22Chinese authorities say 16 people were killed on their side of the border, with more than 500 still missing.
02:28And the State Department says about 85 Americans are unaccounted for.
02:33The threat isn't over. Heavy rain is pushing river levels even higher, prompting fresh flash flood warnings for people living
02:40along the waterways.
02:41And as we said, rescuers are also trying to reach workers at damaged hydropower projects in Nepal.
02:47About 900 people from 12 project sites are unaccounted for.
02:52And officials believe roughly 500 of them may be trapped inside tunnels.
02:56Specialized rescue teams from other countries are now helping with that effort.
03:01Well, flash flooding at Grand Canyon National Park has killed one person, and about 15 others are still believed missing.
03:08A 46-year-old man was found dead Sunday near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River.
03:13The flood hit Saturday after storms swept through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area.
03:19At least 62 people have been evacuated.
03:22Nearly all of the footbridges across Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, cutting off pedestrian access across the water.
03:29The flood also swept large rocks and pieces of damaged infrastructure into the Colorado River.
03:35Several trails and campgrounds are now closed, and the park's Trans Canyon water line is out of service, leaving limited
03:42water reserves.
03:43More showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the rest of today, and with the saturated ground raising the risk of
03:50more flash flooding.
03:51The U.S.-Venezuela oil deal is starting to take shape this morning, but the two sides are already describing parts
03:57of it very differently.
03:59And President Trump now says he plans to use Venezuelan oil to start refilling America's Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
04:06He announced the agreement on Friday, calling it the biggest oil deal in world history.
04:11That deal would give the U.S. a stake in a new private oil company with access to Venezuelan fields,
04:17holding about 65 billion barrels of proven reserves.
04:21The U.S. would get 55% of the company's effective output, including an ownership stake and the right to
04:27buy oil at cost.
04:29And on Sunday, Trump said some of that oil will go into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, calling it a, quote,
04:36gift from Venezuela to the people of the United States.
04:40But Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, is making clear she doesn't see the deal as Venezuela handing over its oil.
04:48In a speech on Saturday, she said, quote,
04:50There is something that must be absolutely clear. Venezuela retains ownership of and sovereignty over its resources.
04:57And there's another big difference. U.S. officials describe 100-year contracts, while Rodriguez says the agreement runs for 25
05:06years.
05:07We haven't seen any text of the agreement, and it's still not clear who will pay for the billions of
05:12dollars needed to rebuild Venezuela's aging oil infrastructure.
05:17Experts say any major increase in production could take years, so the deal isn't expected to have an impact on
05:23gas prices anytime soon.
05:26Well, if you open Google Maps in the U.S. this morning and look for Lake Ontario, you're going to
05:30find Lake America instead.
05:32Google is rolling out the name change after President Trump signed an executive order last week renaming the lake for
05:38U.S. government use.
05:39Here's how it works. American users will see Lake America. In Canada, it'll stay Lake Ontario.
05:47And users elsewhere in the world will see both names, with Lake Ontario taking top billing.
05:52Trump made the change after U.S. trade talks with Canada collapsed, saying Canada has been the worst country to
05:58deal with on trade.
05:59And Ontario Premier Doug Ford has now answered with a message of his own.
06:04He unveiled this massive sign along the Canadian shoreline Saturday, reading,
06:09Lake Ontario now and always.
06:12That's our message to President Trump. We're resilient and we're strong Canadians.
06:18And we're always going to protect our sovereignty, always.
06:21And we'll never ever back down from a bully, ever.
06:24But Ford's pushback isn't just about the name. The U.S. is now imposing 50% tariffs on a broad
06:30range of Canadian goods after the trade talks fell apart.
06:34Canada is set to retaliate with its own tariffs starting September 8th.
06:38On ABC's This Week Sunday, Ford argued Americans could end up feeling more of the pain from that fight.
06:44Well, it'd be devastating on both countries, but it'd be definitely devastating on the U.S.
06:49We're the largest purchaser of vehicles in the entire world off the U.S., over 400% more than anyone
06:56else.
06:56A tariff on Canada is nothing more than a tax on American people.
07:02And it's probably the worst move you could ever do.
07:05Because I love the U.S.
07:07I love the American people.
07:08Canadians love the American people.
07:11We differentiate between the great American people and the president.
07:15Finally this morning, NASA's newest crown jewel is hurtling through space on a mission to reveal some of the universe's
07:22biggest mysteries.
07:24Three, two, one, ignition, and liftoff. Go Falcon Heavy and go Roman Space Telescope.
07:33SpaceX launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket early Sunday morning.
07:40The $4.3 billion telescope is now headed to an observation point about a million miles from Earth, the same
07:48region of space as the Webb Space Telescope.
07:50This bus-sized telescope, named after NASA's first chief astronomer, the late Nancy Grace Roman, will take more than three
07:58months to get there.
08:00Once in place, Roman will use a 300-megapixel camera with a field of view 100 times wider than Hubble's
08:08to allow it to map huge sections of the universe.
08:11It'll also search for clues about dark energy, the mysterious force speeding up the expansion of the universe, and dark
08:18matter, which helps hold galaxies together.
08:21No noise, no sides.
