00:00He's my partner on the Cleveland Browns Radio Network post-game show.
00:03He's on the pre-game show as well with Andy, and of course, he's number one in our hearts.
00:08He's Mr. Tyvus Powell. Hello, Tyvus.
00:11Hi, Tyvus.
00:12Gentlemen, how are you two doing today? Did you guys enjoy your weekend off?
00:17We had a great time. It was really nice, other than I feel for Dylan Gabriel and his bad back.
00:24Yeah, where did that come from?
00:27I looked out there, and when I saw that come up, I said, man, he looked good in the game
00:34out there.
00:34I didn't really, I don't think he got hurt. I don't remember him getting sacked or anything.
00:39Those things, Tyvus, they can flare up at the most opportune times.
00:46It picked a really good time to really flare up, you know?
00:51It kind of makes you wonder, does Deshaun only get four games?
00:55You know, the NFL's got to look into that just to make sure, right?
01:03Yeah.
01:04Yeah, probably.
01:06Maybe they just kind of feel bad.
01:08It's like, you know what? We're not even going to investigate this, you know?
01:11They got a lot, they got bigger fish to fry right now.
01:14I like that idea.
01:15I made the Caddyshack joke earlier, Tyvus, and then somebody sent me the scene from Friday
01:19where the guy falls, and I can't think of his name right now.
01:23I'm blanking on his underdog going, ah, my back, it hurts.
01:25It's like, the floor's not even wet.
01:26What are you doing?
01:27You're talking about EVA.
01:29That's it, thank you.
01:29Oh my God, my back, my back, my back, and my back.
01:36I want $150,000, but we can settle out of court right now for $20.
01:47Oh, golly.
01:48It's so good.
01:50Well, regardless, another man's pain shouldn't be our joke, but by golly, it is.
01:56That said, they do have four quarterbacks.
01:59Now, how do you sort through this, Tyvus?
02:02You start the season in Jacksonville.
02:04Deshaun's going to start.
02:05What happens from there?
02:08I think there's one of those things that you kind of, well, Dylan doesn't come,
02:11isn't eligible to come back until week four.
02:13So you got some time there to make a decision on what you want to do.
02:17How is Deshaun playing in those first four games?
02:20You know, is it, if you pivot from him, is he pivoting all the way to where you're
02:23closing that chapter?
02:24Because you would imagine, once they shut that door, they're not going to reopen it.
02:28You know, it's time to move on to the younger guys.
02:31So that's one way that they can look at it.
02:33Week four, Deshaun isn't giving you what you was looking for or you expected.
02:37You can move on from him and keep the three young guys.
02:39You know, that's kind of where the fan base will probably would have rather have
02:43been, you know, finally going to get, look at all these guys before you make your
02:47final decision to get a quarterback in the draft next year.
02:50That's the way to look at it.
02:52Or with all the injuries that goes on, are you keeping these guys and keeping them
02:58for trade leverage?
02:59You know, I think, remember, I can't remember what year it was.
03:02They went in and they carried forward.
03:03They wanted to keep them to try to trade one of them.
03:06And then eventually they ended up releasing somebody like two years ago.
03:09I feel like they can't, they tried to carry three or four and then like ended up releasing
03:13one of them.
03:14Maybe it was Snoop, maybe, or something like that.
03:16I don't remember, but it's just kind of similar to that situation where they try to, you know,
03:21AB is always looking to try to get a trade off.
03:24You know, if I can find a way to trade one of these guys before releasing one of them,
03:28you know, maybe we'll go that route.
03:30Well, they did trade Josh Dobbs, right?
03:32And last year they traded Pickett and then Flacco.
03:34So absolutely what you're talking about has been done before.
03:38And you can be sure he's working the phones for that.
03:42As he should be.
03:43That would be the smart thing to do.
03:45You know, he loves to get those late round picks.
03:48You know, that's his thing.
03:50Well, Thomas, they only kept five corners.
03:53What do you make of that?
03:55That day that we're about to find out here eventually who they claimed off waivers.
04:00It was a couple of names that I saw.
04:04And I was like, oh, that'd be interesting to look at, you know.
04:07And I think that they're definitely looking at that.
04:09And they're probably looking at edge rushers, too.
04:11So, you know, you see the initial 53 and there's guys that's jumping for joy.
04:16But the reality is you got to make it past today as well because you think you made the 53
04:23and then they claim somebody.
04:25They got to get rid of somebody to get the guy that they claim.
04:28And it could be you.
04:29So, don't quite celebrate too early.
04:32You saw a couple guys that had you intrigued.
04:35Do you have any names for those that stood out to you who were cut?
04:39I can't think of them off the top of my head right now.
04:42But I had seen just some corners and I was just like, ah, that's the guy.
04:45Like former third round pick, former first round pick.
04:48I'm like, ah, you know.
04:51We could give it a spin, see what it looks like here.
04:54I think I would do that.
04:55If you give a first round and third round talent, I mean, you would think, right?
05:01Well, you would think, wouldn't you?
05:03Absolutely.
05:04At this point, I mean, there's five guys on this roster and corners on this roster.
05:08We know corners get hurt, sadly.
05:10So, it's like, okay, you got to find some depth somewhere.
05:13And not to mention, like, I only want to see two of these corners actually play.
05:18And if I start seeing three, four, and five, things have gotten a little ugly.
05:24Yeah, I still think Denzel is the most important one.
05:27Without Denzel, if Denzel goes down, it's going to be a scary season because that is one guy that is
05:33a bona fide lockdown guy.
05:35So, you want to make sure that he's healthy.
05:37I think Tyson Campbell, if he was to go down, I think you could still live with it.
05:42You could slide protection or coverage away from Denzel and help out in that aspect.
05:46But Denzel is the one guy that you got where he don't need no help.
05:50He got a dude or a side to himself, and you can be good with that.
05:54You can push coverage, roll coverage away from that and be fine.
05:57So, if you lose him, it's going to be tough.
06:01Tyvus Powell joining us from the Browns Radio Network.
06:03Folks weren't happy.
06:05I get it.
06:05Luke Floria from Mentor from Kent State played real well in the preseason.
06:09A wide receiver did not make the team.
06:11I expect him to be back on the practice squad if he's not claimed.
06:14But he didn't make the team.
06:17Tylan Wallace did.
06:18Tyvus, big special teams background.
06:20Tyvus, you earned your living playing a lot of special teams.
06:24How vital is it for a coach, for a special teams coordinator, to have a guy or three on the
06:30roster
06:30who might be there specifically to play special teams?
06:34I mean, it's huge because you've got your core guys.
06:37You know, those are the guys that get other guys to buy in.
06:39You know, you get those young guys to buy in and understand how important it is.
06:43You know, because other guys, starters on defense and offense, they got their thing.
06:47You know, they're worried about offense and defense.
06:49It's not every day that you get those guys that, if you find a group of guys that take
06:53it seriously and get respect from the team, then guys aren't going to come out there and
06:58go have go on it.
06:59They're not, it's not just a playoff.
07:01You know, because they know how important it is to these other guys and they're going
07:04to hold those other guys accountable.
07:05So I think that's why having a core group of special teams guys is always important to
07:10a championship team because they make everybody realize how important this play is.
07:14It's one, it's special teams is nothing but one playing that you give all out effort
07:19for one play, all out effort.
07:21That's all it is.
07:22Tyvus Powell joining us on the wise heart, right?
07:25We make it right.
07:25Call Kyle right hotline.
07:27And of course you can hear him on the Browns radio network doing pregame with Andy and
07:31post game with Jeff, every post game of every single Browns game, every one Tyvus, every
07:37last one of them, no matter how late they go.
07:42Yeah.
07:45So I want to ask you, cause you played defensive back in the league for a good period of time.
07:49Every time Emmanuel McNeil Warren gets brought up to any coach on the staff, they go, we're
07:54really impressed with him.
07:55We love what he's brought to the team.
07:57We're really excited for what he's going to be able to do.
07:59And you go, so what is that thing that he'll be able to do?
08:02And they respond with, we're keeping that close to the best.
08:05What do you expect out of Emmanuel McNeil Warren this year?
08:09He'll play that big nickel role.
08:11I think that he's a, like I said, this guy's the ball hog.
08:13That guy does a great job of finding the football and he creates takeaways.
08:17You know, we got to see it in practice.
08:19Didn't get a chance to see it in the game, but saw it a couple of times in practice and
08:23you
08:23can see things really starting to click for him.
08:25And anytime you got a guy that can find the football and take it away, you got to get
08:30that guy on the field, you know?
08:31So I think that they're going to put him in that big nickel role, keep him around the
08:35ball and around the line of scrimmage and let him do his thing there.
08:38Let him go find the football that way.
08:39Because again, he's shown you that he can do that at a high level.
08:42And that's something that this defense is lacking is a guy that's truly a ball hog.
08:46You know, Dale Pitts is a great safety for us, but he does not get takeaways.
08:50Ronnie Hickman, as a rookie, he seemed like he was getting a lot of takeaways last year.
08:55I think he kind of regressed a little bit in that area.
08:57So, you know, get a new guy in there that can get that ball.
09:01And that's something that this defense, you want to talk about the defense taking the next
09:04step.
09:04That right there is the way to do it.
09:07I have a gentleman who sent me an email this morning, Tyvus, and you'll like it.
09:12It says, in an effort to address their most glaring need, the Browns have claimed the
09:17following players off of waivers.
09:19He then listed all 18 quarterbacks who were cut over the weekend.
09:29That said, they're not going after Will Levis.
09:35They're not doing anything else here, are they?
09:38No, I don't think you need to.
09:39I think that, you know, if the season doesn't go as planned, you're in prime position with
09:45those two first-round picks to parlay it, and you could always trade up and get a guy.
09:50You know, likely, maybe, you know, with the Rams making a pick, you're probably picking
09:5432nd.
09:57So, that pick is worthless.
09:59A lot worthless, but obviously, you won't get the top of the crop when it comes to the
10:03top of the draft.
10:04But you never know what your season's going to be.
10:06You know, right now, it seems like you don't really have a good plan.
10:11You know, I think a lot of this fan base isn't expecting too much from this season.
10:16A lot of this fan base is kind of punted on the season, and when you see what the Rams
10:19did, it's like, okay, you really can punt on the season a little bit.
10:23But I think that this season is just dedicated to the young guys getting better.
10:27I think this fan base just want to see those young guys get better, and by the end of the
10:32season, you'll feel good going into the offseason, like, all right, Casey Concepcion is going
10:37to take the next step.
10:38He looked really good at the end.
10:40Quinshawn Jenkins had 1,000 yards.
10:43Denzel Boston was killing it in the red zone.
10:46Mason Graham had like four or five sets.
10:49You get stuff like that, like I think that this fan base is like, you know what, that's
10:52a win, and they could be excited for what's to come in the future.
10:55Malik Collins found his way back to the active roster.
10:59It seems like he's going to be good to go for week one.
11:01They're a little thin at defensive end.
11:03Do you think Mike Hall ends up filling that role for defensive end, and they don't go
11:06looking around there on the waiver wear?
11:09I think that they go look around still.
11:11If they don't get the guy that they ultimately want, I think that showing that versatility,
11:17we will see some of that from Mike Hall.
11:19I just worry about once you do that, now you're thinning out the defensive tackle position
11:24as well.
11:25So I think Mike is unique because he can play all of those roles.
11:28And he's had a good camp in the days that before he got hurt, and the days after he
11:33got hurt, he was playing really well.
11:35So I think Mike knows how important this year is, and he wants to show that versatility.
11:39I mean, how many defensive linemen can you say play inside and outside?
11:44So that makes him a unicorn.
11:45That makes him special, especially if he's productive at both.
11:48I look at it as a golden opportunity.
11:50He can do something that other guys can't, and he can really get paid, you know, because
11:55they want to start that soon.
11:56They want to start the negotiations, especially on that defensive line, and want to start those
12:00negotiations soon.
12:01He got a chance to really hit the bank.
12:03Tyvus, how do you bring along two rookie wide receivers on the same team?
12:08What should Todd Munkin do?
12:09You throw him in there, you let him go, you baby him.
12:12What do you do?
12:14No, you, this ain't, first of all, baby him is never an option, Jeff.
12:20If that's what you got to do, then you got the wrong guy, okay?
12:24You should never, ever have to baby any of these guys.
12:27I think that you throw him in there, for sure, because they say you're either going to sink
12:32or swim, you know, and you need to find out what type of guy these is.
12:34I think that they've shown you how good they can be in this, in this camp and even in the
12:41preseason with some of the plays that was out, they was making, you know, we've seen
12:44Denzel Boston in practice doing really well, going up against different guys and making
12:49plays.
12:50We've seen Casey Concepcion go into the actual game and make plays.
12:54So I think that those guys are ready to go, you know, don't hold them back.
12:58Let those guys get their money off.
13:02Tyvus Powell, Browns Radio Network, joining us on the Wise Heart Right, We Make It Right
13:06call, Kyle Wright Hotline.
13:08A lot of talk about Deshaun Watson and the run game being used lately that they're starting
13:13to install a little bit more quarterback run.
13:15How much of that do you expect to see?
13:17And I wonder how successful it's going to be.
13:21That's going to be interesting.
13:22I mean, do you really want to run a guy that's coming off two Achilles surgeries?
13:27I mean, that seems like that's not the right, the best move to make, but it definitely serves
13:32as a weapon.
13:33It definitely is what made Deshaun Watson unique, his ability to be able to run the ball.
13:38So I understand why they want to do it from that standpoint.
13:42But that's up to him.
13:44A guy that's kind of not been durable, I don't know if you really want to too much put him
13:48in that position to keep running like that.
13:51So I wouldn't, I would limit it.
13:53I would do it on a need basis, but hey, he's a guy that wants to make plays, so he's
14:00probably
14:00going to do it anyways.
14:02You like the way they handled the quarterback alleged competition during the preseason with
14:08a half for Deshaun, third quarter Shadour, half for Shadour, third quarter Deshaun, and
14:14then the other two guys in game three.
14:16I like how they did the two guys that was going for it, Shadour and Deshaun.
14:23I liked it.
14:23I just think that they didn't finish it correctly.
14:26I think that's it.
14:27And I think that the way it come off is that their mind was made up before that last, before
14:34the second preseason game, they already kind of had their mind made up.
14:38You know, and it's just little things that happened over the course of training camp,
14:42like the one Saturday where they switched it, where it was supposed to be Shadour's
14:46day, but then they switched it for Deshaun, and then the reason being is because they
14:51wanted to even the reps.
14:53It's just like, to me, it's like you kind of gave the hint that you wanted it to be
14:58Deshaun all along.
14:59And when you look back on just some of the things that they did and how they handled it,
15:03I just feel like the way they say is that Deshaun came in with the lead, right?
15:08They said from OTAs coming into camp, Deshaun had a lead, and Shadour had to catch up.
15:13Okay.
15:14It seems like as the camp went on, Shadour started to catch up.
15:18And Shadour was pretty consistent.
15:20And it's kind of funny because, you know, the one thing that he needed to work on was
15:26be more consistent from the first quarter through the fourth quarter, take care of the
15:31football, and probably be a little bit quicker in your progressions.
15:35I feel like he made the attempt to do all three of those things, and I feel like he
15:41didn't get rewarded for it because what they said was the reason he didn't win it is because
15:47Deshaun gives us the best chance to score points and move the ball down the field.
15:51But you want him to keep the ball out of harm's way.
15:53So if he's checking it down, that's him keeping the ball out of harm's way.
15:57So it's like he made the change that you wanted him to make, but then you didn't reward him
16:03for making that change.
16:04And it's just, it's kind of funny to me that that happened in that way.
16:08And the thing is this, if you have any plans of ever going from Deshaun to Shadour, then
16:14this whole thing, then the Deshaun Watson thing was pointless.
16:17And I think that's where a lot of this fan base is.
16:20If you have any, if Deshaun Watson ain't going to play for 17 games, and at some point
16:25you're going to say, all right, let's pull them and put the young guys in there, then
16:29what was the, why not just start that way?
16:33I agree completely.
16:34It's why I wanted Shadour from the very beginning as well, as it's like, what, what does this
16:38do?
16:39I mean, what is, what is putting Deshaun Watson out here for?
16:43I don't know.
16:44I mean, I've heard anywhere from two to four games be thrown out, especially if it's two
16:48games.
16:48It's like, well, then what were we even doing?
16:51You took all of this time that you could have been installing a different playbook to
16:55put in a Deshaun Watson playbook to then have to shred that and put a Shadour Sanders playbook
16:59at it.
17:00It's like, you're just wasting time.
17:02Yeah.
17:03I'm hoping from a Browns fan standpoint and a Browns employee standpoint that Deshaun Watson
17:10kills it.
17:10I really do.
17:11Cause, cause if he doesn't, it's, it's going to be a tough conversation from the fan base
17:17and a lot of people outside the fan base.
17:19So for them, for the Browns sake, I'm hoping that it's something that we missed with Deshaun
17:24that they seen.
17:25And I hope that he does really well.
17:28It seems that when he's in there, you think he could play 10, 12 games for the Browns sake.
17:34I hope so.
17:35Okay.
17:36Yeah.
17:36I wonder how that's going to play out.
17:38And, you know, there, you might not like the situation at quarterback, but it will be
17:43a fascinating one to keep an eye on this year.
17:45Tyvis, thank you, buddy.
17:46We appreciate your time.
17:48I appreciate y'all.
17:49Go, go Bucks.
17:51Go Browns.
17:52Bearcats.
17:54And Bearcats.
17:55There we go.
17:56All right, Tyvis.
17:56Thanks, buddy.
17:57One and one, baby.
17:58We took Twinsburg down.
18:00Let's go, Bearcats.
18:02Bye.
18:02We'll see you later.
18:03Take care, buddy.
18:04See you later.
