01:37in this auction that can very much do that.
01:39It's your first auction, witnessing the dynamism in life for the first time, Bish.
01:44Yeah, we talked about it yesterday, you know, the comments, how that drives a price upon
01:48who wants to get their hands on it because…
01:51Because, you know, it's all determined by demand and supply and at the moment, the fast
01:56bullers are in demand and what's going to be the key factor is that a lot of…
02:00What I got in the news is to always tell us that you plan for the team for the year.
02:04Don't think about the future.
02:06I'm building a team.
02:07Get the team that you want right now.
02:09And of course, he is joining us in the select dugout with another man who knows about winning
02:13titles.
02:14Looking forward to the gentleman in the dugout.
02:18So, let's begin with the team that always has a galaxy of stars but are yet to lift the
02:23trophy, yet to get the title and that is RCB.
02:26They let go 12 players.
02:28They will be focusing on the overseas.
02:30We always know that they want to go for an overseas bowler.
02:33That will be in high demand for RCB.
02:37So, let's talk about this RCB team.
02:39If we show you the squad, they always do end up having a gentleman.
02:43Those sort of, you know, very, very strong Indian core.
02:45Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers, the batting revolves around him.

02:48He's a big name, you know, buys that you're looking forward to and the biggest squad to fill.
02:52I mean, as far as I am, I don't think Virat Kohli will bat at the top.
02:56He will bat in the middle order.
02:58They want a player at number five or six.
03:01Maybe, I don't know why they, obviously the fast bowling department.
03:05Because they have good quality fast bowlers as far as Indian bowling is concerned.
03:08Having watched them and been a fan of RCB from almost the very inception.
03:12You want a particular fast bowler who you know what you will get from at the depth.
03:18Because they leak a lot of runs and they have done in years sort of don't fire.
03:22It becomes so very important because they have somebody, some good batting depth in a Washington Sundar or a Mohina.
03:30Can finish games and that's where somebody like a Miller, he's played all his life for Kings XI Punjab.
03:35And at times, you know, it's just a shift in the franchise.
03:38Help in the auction for all the team with the current form that he is to see exactly how RCB
03:43will go.
03:44But I tell you what, they've released a lot of players.
03:45They did release 12 of them.
03:47But the one they did not release was Mr. Nags.
03:50Mr. Nags still remains in RCB.
03:53When I was given a budget, you know, you need to make a team within 42 crows.
03:57And I can first or the second group.
03:59So I think they are well placed to get somebody like a Pat Cummins and beef up their fast bowling
04:05department.
04:05So that kind of could just dictate the way the auction goes, especially when you have the first.
04:09But do they already have a captain in that squad or are you looking for one question?
04:13That's the thing that I wanted to ask Sanjay because we talk about the overseas captains
04:18and I know we've had discussions privately amongst ourselves over the years in the commentary box
04:22versus who knows the scenery so much better.
04:26Is that because you tend to change, chop and change the team every against every.
04:31That perspective is always good to have an Indian captain.
04:35And I feel as far as Kings XI is concerned.
04:37You know, there you go.
04:38It will be interesting to see just exactly how they do approach it
04:41because they do have the biggest purse, Kings XI Punjab, heading into this Vivo IPL auction.
04:45We're only getting started here.
04:47I can hear all the noise around me as things are being set up in that big auction room.
04:51What are the top stories that we are looking forward to today?
04:55Now, they may not have as big a purse as Kings XI do,
04:58but Kolkata nitriders, they have 30 needs to be done.
05:01What's a priority for KKR?
05:04I think an opening batsman.
05:06If Neurathric Williams, for me, he flies under the radar.
05:09I think if you can get a good he bowls and what he can produce.
05:12So, I think that those are three guys you can probably perhaps look at.
05:17Possible, but you know.
05:19That's an interesting statement.
05:20That doesn't really mean that he would lead the team.
05:23But Chris Lin, they might be open to the idea of having a new captain.
05:27And I think they would be wanting, they would be open to the idea of batsman.
05:33It makes it exciting, doesn't it Vish?
05:35But exactly.
05:36It's a great insight from someone who sat on that auction table and understands the strategies.
05:41So, what are KKR thinking in their very own city?
05:46How interesting will it be to see Baz sitting on that table?
05:49He was quite literally the night rider that set the Vivo IPL on fire in the inaugural season.
05:54So, it's a different role for him.
05:56The teams, of course, they need to keep on tweeting to us.

05:59And I keep seeing the name Pat Cummings really doing the rounds.
06:03Will he be the flavour of this Vivo IPL?
06:06There are quite a few overseas players that will make for interesting bids.
06:10This seems lovely.
06:11You expect it to be a bidding war for some of them, without a doubt.
06:14It's no coincidence that you're here, Vish.
06:16There are a couple of West Indian players here.
06:19But listen, obviously they hold a huge amount of interest,
06:22having just quite literally being in the middle of a series as well.
06:25So, with Sheldon Cottrell, with Shimron Hetmeyer once again making a case for himself,
06:29and Kesterick Williams, as mentioned.
06:31Yeah, that's what they'll get.
06:33But there's still, I think, a little bit of refining to be done at the depth for him.
06:37Good point. So, tell us with your, you know, experience of sitting on the table.
06:39Now, last season, the franchise paid a lot of money for him.
06:42It didn't go off.
06:43However, you've seen the kind of form he is in right now, this year.
06:47How well he's played spin.
06:48Does he again become one of those players that can get money in the bank this auction?
06:54But he's somebody who's got a range of shots.
06:57He can, you know, go over covers because what happens nowadays in the middle overs,
07:01the off spinners or the leg spinners are not actually bowling anything which is in your stump line.
07:08They're bowling more wide of the off stump, fifth stump lines.
07:12And he's somebody who is not only looking to slog mid-vicket.
07:15He can go over covers. He can target the side screen.
07:17So, he's got a range of shots. And against bowlers who bolster the innings, strategically, couple of the teams want
07:24their top order to be, you know, very conservative till the 10th over.
07:29So, I would, he gets injured. Then they always have a farb duplicity to lead.
07:34But whether they have an experienced batter who can, you know, be impressive.
07:38He's got a quick short ball. And I remember in this series as well, one bouncer will be sitting and
07:44analyzing.
07:45I think three or four teams are big paycheck. Big paycheck. Four and a half crores. Four and a half
07:50crores.
07:50Okay, you're saying it now? Yeah, I see. I love the way we don't even ask for predictions.
07:53They just give it to us now.
07:54It will be a bidding war for Sheldon Cottrell, which you can understand.
07:57There are a couple of Australian players in the mix as well that could start the same.
08:01And guess what? We've got some Aussies in our select dugout that are looking forward to that.
08:07So, plenty of experience there in the, you know, the players that have just been mentioned.
08:12But I think Robin Utpa makes a very intriguing case because he brings with him so many abilities.
08:16He can be a leader for you. He's flexible batted in the top. He can battle a middle order.
08:21Would RC be looking at him? You know, Bangalore boy, would KKR look to go back?
08:25Is there another team that needs a player with the experience of Robin?
08:29Problem with Robin, I've admired Robin over the Italy. I think it could be a good guy.
08:33Well, it's not just players with reputation. It's the players who come into this auction with everything to gain.

10:18Well, we already had a morning workout, so we didn't want to waste time putting our paddle up, but I

10:33When you do plan these sort of auctions, is there a certain price tag? Because everyone knew that he would

11:36And one day, I'm sure there are a lot of teams that have similar players that you go off to,
11:40so backcomings is one of them certainly.

11:47Well, we've got some money. We'll see who I'll come across. I can't tell you who I'm going to go
11:50for, but I think we've got a good...
11:52How do you actually plan to... You know, Sanjay sat in a couple of this before and he is witnessing
11:56it for the first time.
11:58When the purse is depleting, now how do you manage...
12:01You've got second rounds, you've got an accelerated option as well. Are you planning it just face by face?
12:05Yeah, you do. You're flexible, but also you've planned for the next option so that you know that they're going
12:11to be roughly in budget.
12:12Otherwise, you don't look at those players. And you're realistic about who's going to go for what. Otherwise, there's no
12:17point.
12:17So, one of the teams that had released the most actually. So, is there a certain different sort of pressure
12:21that is on RCB in this option?
12:23Not really. I've been there, done that, sitting on a different side now. With the two acquisitions that either side
12:29have got right now, how's it looking?
12:30What do you make of the two acquisitions?
12:32The beauty of Finch is that he bats well against face bowlers as well as spinners. And so high, especially
12:38for the foreign players, as you go, as you progress, the option two, the three and the four, they might
12:45come at cheaper valuation.

12:57so far.
12:59Well, I mean, when we took Maxwell, when we bought, or at least the management, which was then, Anil Kumlay
13:06was wanting to have him back.
13:08So, it clearly shows the confidence that the management has in a particular type of career and with the kind
13:13of money that they have. So, if they decide, if they decide.
13:16Like this for someone like Glenn Maxwell, 10.75, it's not that it's not unexpected. It has happened to him
13:22before, but it's twofold.
13:24It is, you know, he's kind of dealt with pressure and hashtag. He's also coming off a mental break. So,
13:30are you...
13:30...all the best and as my auntie says, he's had to deal with that.
13:33You know, does put it in a different light for you. So, obviously, that was one of the big talking
13:37points for Kings XI, but Sanjay put it really rightly.
13:40They are the kings of the auction right now.
13:44It looks like Kings XI, they also look to dictate this auction for some of the other teams that are
13:48involved and that makes it quite exciting.

14:00It's quite interesting. It started with the Chris Lin incident into Mumbai Indians.
14:04That's actually quite intriguing that they're looking at him to be like a backup as well.
14:09But let's talk about Delhi Capitals for a second because they went and they got Jason Roy.
14:14You know, it was some like a trial and error and also went in and showed that they've got the
14:18services of Chris Wilkes.
14:19Remember, they let go of Trent Bolt. So, does that work for them, gentlemen?
14:22Jason Roy going to bat. So, maybe that is a question that the management knows and Chris Wilkes is a
14:28good buy.
14:28I feel because they let Sherman Rutherford go to Mumbai Indians and they sort of filled it.
14:34What was his base price? But that was something that they struggled with.
14:38Both the Collins actually trying to get them in a situation where they could actually play them.
14:42Yeah, Monroe and Ingram. There was a number of games that I watched that Colin Ingram in particular could have
14:50finished kind of thing and it didn't quite work out for him.
14:53So, look, to get that quality.
14:56I think it's because we did talk about one of the players that would be someone that would be in
15:00hot demand and that is Glenn Maxwell.
15:02He's been in form. He may have taken that little bit of a mental break from cricket, but he's very
15:07much in demand because he's gone for 10.7.
15:09To 9 crores or so, but they will be in need of a pick. So, the only guy option remaining
15:16for them is probably look at Ben Cutting.
15:19Sam Curran, we were discussing as well that Sam Curran, there were a couple of games last year where he

15:24The one player that they showed any interest in and they went from it right from the start and they
15:29don't have that many slots to fill as well.

18:35Yeah, that's the beauty and the perfect rags to riches story.
18:38And all because of the talent and the hard work that he did.
18:41And it's not that he's only done well with spinners.
18:44But also against the likes of Varun Ayran, who can board at 145.
18:47So, he can tong the ball not only against the spin, but also against pace.
18:51It's one season that changes your life in a sense, but also kind of sets you up for the rest.
18:57Because you'll now always have that price tag with you.
19:00And I think these youngsters know that.
19:01But I think that's the thing.
19:03It should set these young guys up.
19:05You get mentors attached.
19:07How much Chennai Super Kings have left in the kit.
19:10But Chennai Super Kings certainly had the plan.
19:12They said, okay, we want Sam Karan.
19:14We certainly want to go for Piyush.

21:19He was one of the players that everyone had their eye on from that perspective.
21:23And also Morgan.
21:25You want bowlers that can win new tournaments.
21:27This is something that they wanted.
21:29So there is a lot of expectations and hopes.
21:31Fortunately for Pat Cummins, he's pretty experienced.
21:34Yeah, because the price tag, as we've been talking about, can weigh some people down.
21:38We looked at Ben Stokes coming into the IPL at the price tag.
21:41For fast bowlers and for Pat Cummins.
21:43So when that bid was going, which is now the second most expensive bid in vivo IPL auction history for
21:49a player.
21:49What was running through your mind?
21:51Well, we would have what we deem our overseas players' jobs are to exit.
21:56Hence, we were obviously pretty keen to get.
21:58Alright, so what was the thinking behind really going for Chris Morris?
22:02We needed a walker bowler.
22:04And he provides some power at the back end.
22:06So, you know, when you.
22:08Especially in the first half.
22:09But the amount of players who ended up buying.
22:13Am I right?
22:13And you released the most, coach.
22:15So, is it a plan?
22:18But we're very clear in terms of what we want.
22:21And there's certainly been some players that have been passed in.

40:01they're looking to build that team for just this season,
40:04but they also have the possibility to, you know,
40:07perhaps retain some of these players as well.
40:10So the top Indians that went in this,
40:12after all those years of, you know,
40:14doing commentary on IPL games,
40:16it's an interesting experience to see lost within those rooms as well.
