00:00If you compare it to other events, you know, I think we compare very good.
00:04You know, unfortunately, London has an issue with violence.
00:10You know, it's unfair that carnival is always targeted as a cause of it.
00:14You know, carnival is a victim of crime rather than a perpetrator of crime.
00:18And people should do more research into the facts.
00:20We as a community don't want any violence on the streets of carnival.
00:24We want people to come and celebrate carnival in the spirit that it's meant to be.
00:27And that's bringing people together, no matter what religion, race they are, to come and celebrate.
00:32You know, London has a very diverse community and this is the biggest example of that.
00:37We should all be proud of that. Successful carnivores, everybody enjoying them, you know, come out and enjoy themselves.
00:43You know, for us, you know, carnival is always successful.
00:46It's a major achievement.
00:48The work that goes in from 36 sound systems, 50 odd masquerade bands, 8 Brazilian bands, 20 still bands.
00:56These communities that work hard for 12 months of the whole year to bring people together in creative arts and
01:02keep them occupied doing constructive things.
01:05Officers made more than 600 arrests during this year's Notting Hill Carnival.
01:10A slightly higher number than last year when in 2025 they made 528 arrests across the two main days of
01:19the event.
01:19Hundreds of thousands of revellers attended the event in West London over the weekend and people in costumes and steel
01:27bands moved through the streets as the carnival celebrated its 60th anniversary.
01:32The Metropolitan Police said there were two assaults with knives, one stabbing and one slashing, neither of which resulted in
01:40life-threatening injuries.
01:41A man believed to be in his 20s died after entering a canal off Kensal Road while being pursued by
01:48police officers near the carnival.
01:50So, we recognise that serious violence and crime is a challenge at carnival.
01:55I think history has seen that we have had a number of sort of serious incidents of previous carnivals, but
02:00we also recognise that as carried out by a minority of people,
02:04that overwhelming majority of people who are coming to carnival want to come and have a really good time.
02:08And we are working with the organisers to make sure that they can put their investment into the barriers this
02:14year, so we can actually divert our resources back into sort of core policing responsibilities,
02:19such as preventing crime, protecting the public and responding to incidents.
02:24So, our focus is to work with the organisers and our partners to make sure we deliver a safe carnival
02:29and a safe, sustainable event.
02:30Where we've been able to arrest people, we will. Where we've been able to charge people, we've been putting bail
02:36conditions on them to stop them coming from carnival.
02:38And we've also been working with probation services to make sure that we can put license conditions on people to
02:44stop them coming from carnival.
02:46And we've also been seizing weapons. We've had significant successes using live facial recognition since 2024.
02:53So, over 2,500 people, dangerous offenders who've been arrested. 2,000 of those we've been able to put before
02:59the courts.
02:59We're a lot.
