Lana Condor puts her taste buds to the test in a tasting challenge all about Asian supermarket and American grocery store favorites. In this episode of Taste Off, the 'Coyote vs. Acme' star samples Asian and American takes on popular snacks and grocery staples, including strawberries and cream frozen bars, chicken karaage and chicken nuggets, seafood-flavored chips, probiotic yogurt drinks, and cream-filled chocolate cakes. As she tastes her way through each matchup, Lana shares her favorites, reacts to a surprisingly realistic steak-shaped strawberry dessert, and revisits Yakult — the drink famously loved by her 'To All the Boys' character, Lara Jean — even if Lana admits it isn't exactly her personal favorite. With plenty of surprising flavors and hilarious reactions along the way, Lana finds out whether Asian or American supermarket groceries win her vote. 'Coyote vs. Acme' is out in theaters now.

00:00Oh hot, oh hot mama. My mouth is on fire.
00:04They're called ding-dongs? Don't even try me with this. Don't even try me with this.
00:14I am about to do a taste test with food and wine. I am trying Asian and American groceries
00:20to see which is which and also to see which tastes better.
00:27Here we go. Ta-da! I see, okay, these are strawberry ice cream and this looks like Wagyu.
00:35If this is secretly like a piece of steak, I'm gonna be shocked out of my mind.
00:42Ice cream doesn't really have a smell. It just smells cold. No, this is strawberry. This is
00:49strawberry. This might be a meaty ice cream, which I honestly never thought I'd ever encounter,
00:58but you know what? In Japan, they do an amazing Wagyu beef like Negroni. So I'm, I'm open.
01:07This is not a Negroni, but I'm gonna pretend.
01:13I panicked for no reason. It's also strawberry. Okay. So this is actually delightful. It tastes
01:19almost exactly like the strawberry ice cream that you get from the ice cream truck, but has it like
01:24all the little coverings on top. Oh, this is also strawberry, but it's much creamier. Okay. I think
01:34this one is American and I think this one's Asian and I prefer this one because it's a little bit
01:40more
01:41subtle. And this is, it feels like there's like, what is that red 40 dye that we're not supposed to
01:48eat? Like how'd they do all that? But I could be so wrong because I also thought this was a
01:54steak.
02:00Damn. Yeah, I'm wrong. This, I think I did say that this, it felt like this was made with real
02:09fruit,
02:09which allegedly it says made with real fruit. So I got that right. But I was super, super, super wrong.
02:15Couldn't have been more wrong. I was delighted that it didn't taste like steak though. That's for sure.
02:20I feel tricked, but I'm just warming up. So this, I needed to get my failures out of the way.
02:27Bring
02:27on the next fried chicken, be fried chicken, fried chicken. Oh, I'm back, baby. I'm feeling better.
02:39I'm feeling better. I was down, but I'm back. I fear this is going to be difficult, but maybe not.
02:43I already have a gut instinct. My gut instinct here is that this is Asian and this is American.
02:48Chicken. You see how this is like, there's all these little like craggly bits and extra kind of
02:54little cragglies versus this is a, is more s or is more smooth in texture. And I kind of feel
03:01like,
03:01like Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, I feel like they use like panko and they use a little bit of
03:07different flowers. And it always feels like whenever I've had chicken there, that it's always kind of
03:12looked like this and been more smooth. So I'm pretty, I'm pretty sure this is Asian. Oh, hot.
03:19It's a hot mama. My mouth is on fire. So good. It's very umami. It's very savory. It's very like,
03:27I want to say maybe it was brined in a little bit of soy sauce perhaps because it's delightfully salty.
03:33This one feels like more, Oh no, no, no, Lana. Don't second guess yourself. See, okay. I was thinking
03:40I've spent a lot of time in like convenience stores in Korea and in Korea, you can go in and
03:48get the
03:48best fried chicken ever at like a, like a 7-eleven. And for a second, I thought, dang, is that
03:54the
03:54popcorn chicken in 7-eleven? But no, I'm still, this is still Asian. I almost got myself there for a
04:00second.
04:00I'm gonna do a little. Okay. So like this tastes like chicken. This does not taste like chicken.
04:08This tastes like processed chicken. I feel so confident about this. It's like this. I really
04:14feel like I'm eating a seasoned to the bone piece of delightful chicken. And this I'm like, oh yeah,
04:21it's a chicken nugget, whatever. Well, this is American and this is Asian and this tastes 100 times better.
04:30I have a good feel. I'm going right in.
04:35I'm the queen of Asian chickens. Okay. This is delightful guys. Get this. This is so good.
04:42Yeah. This is your lightly breaded chicken breast bites, just as I predicted. It's cute,
04:50but it's not as, this is very, very well seasoned. Yes.
04:57Like my palms are, are sweaty. Like I really, okay, come on. You can do this. Okay, Lana,
05:03you can do this. Three, two, one. Don't even try me with this. Don't even try me with this.
05:09Yes. Barbecue. Kettle, probably.
05:16Maybe not kettle. Well, this is a delightful chip. It's a barbecue chip. I personally believe that the
05:24chips that are folded are a far superior chip to one of these. I think you get more crunch. You
05:33get a
05:33little excitement. You're like, ah, what's in there? Love that. I feel that this is a shrimp chip.
05:40I grew up eating shrimp chips. They're my favorite snack. I have a drawer in my pantry
05:45dedicated to shrimp chips. So this better be a shrimp chip. If I'm wrong, I'm going to,
05:50I'm going to call my therapist and then I'll be back. Which do I like better? I mean,
05:57they're both so good. I think I eat more shrimp chips than I do barbecue chips. So I personally
06:03would go with shrimp. All is right. We can carry on. We are okay. Everything is fine. I was wrong.
06:17I thought this was the kettle brand chip. It's not. I've never actually heard of Zaps before. This is
06:23the New Orleans kettle style spicy Cajun craw taters. I don't know if I'm getting spicy Cajun craw
06:30taters, but there's like a crustacean on it, but this is just so far more shrimpy. He is thrilled,
06:38but buddy, like the end is near. Don't be smiling like that. But this one, he knows. He knows he's
06:45cooked. Look at him. He's a little grumpy. I'm really, really happy and I'm excited for the next,
06:52but I'm not going to become overly confident. Right, Lana? Do not become overly confident.
07:02Oh, okay. Well, I'm sure this, this has got to be milk.
07:09Oh, whoa. That's going to be a gut buster later. I think it's like a really, really thick,
07:14like prebiotic yogurt drink. I think it's vanilla. No hate, but it has that artificial kind of like
07:22super sweetness, but it's fruity. See, now I'm thinking maybe it's also strawberry. Okay.
07:31Whoa. That's a special flavor. Let me give it a whiff.
07:36That's not much better either. I think that maybe this is like a creamy probiotic drink. So I'm like,
07:43are they going to give me like a Euclid or something like that on the Asian side? It's
07:47probably going to be something like that. Like it's a very popular Korean yogurt drink, but
07:51I've had them before and I really don't remember them tasting like that. I think this is American.
07:56I think this is Asian and I prefer this one.
08:10I have had this drink on set onto all the boys I've loved before.
08:15Hey, hello, LJ. What is that?
08:17A Korean yogurt smoothie.
08:19This is a drink that we have in the first movie that my character
08:25likes and my little sister drinks a ton of them. And it was exactly what I kind of thought it
08:32was
08:32going to be, but don't remember it tasting this way. I am so sorry to the Yuclid community. I know
08:38how much this drink means to you guys. I wish so badly that I was one of the cool kids.
08:45Unfortunately,
08:46this was not for Lana, but maybe it was for Lara Jean. There we go.
08:51Now this one is, yeah, is what I thought it was going to be like a probiotic. Now, hold on.
08:56Didn't I say strawberry? I said, oh, it kind of tastes like strawberry. So I got that right.
09:02It supports gut health. We'll see. We'll see in a few hours. Alrighty. Well,
09:09I'm a little disappointed in myself again. I don't know what's true anymore.
09:21It's so crazy. Cause I kind of thought that it would like visually be more obvious.
09:26I don't have a sweet tooth. So this will be a little bit more challenging for me. I've never
09:29gravitated towards dessert. I've always thought to myself, if there's more room in my tummy,
09:34I'm always going to like cap it off with like an entree. All right. I don't have any initial
09:39predictions. I'm going to say it's chocolate. This kind of smells like my white friend's
09:46favorite just like little desserts that they have in their lunch boxes.
09:49But I've also like never really seen this. We're going to go in a different way. Cause we're,
09:54oh, that went like butter. I feel like this is a old dessert. I feel like this is something it's
10:00like a, you can, you know, like Twinkies where they'll survive everything and they'll always stay
10:04the same and they'll be alive longer than all of us. This feels like you're a relative of, of a
10:09Twinkie.
10:13It doesn't really taste like anything. It's very subtle. I guess it tastes like,
10:18it tastes like chocolate cake. Like the aftertaste is like chocolate cake and then inside,
10:22I'm assuming it's some sort of vanilla cream. That was wild. Onwards. I have,
10:28I don't, I really don't know. This doesn't taste like anything either.
10:33Maybe it's just that I don't, I don't have the sweet tooth. This one feels like a little bit
10:39richer. It feels like a little bit more decadent. It's like far more moist and it doesn't have like
10:45an extreme aftertaste. I'm going to say this is Asian and this is American. Cause this is more
10:51flavorful and I feel like my people can handle flavor. I'm not certain at all. Cause I'm like
10:58thinking to myself now, should I just go with my gut instinct here? Cause my gut instinct was like,
11:03I was like, oh, I've seen this in like a plastic wrapper squished, like in a car like this in
11:10the
11:10cup holder, squished. I've never seen this. And it's beautiful. Cause it has all these like delightful
11:15little designs, but it just doesn't taste like anything. And I, and so much of what comes out of
11:20Asia tastes like it's amazing. No, but, but then if I betray my initial gut instinct, who am I?
11:26My gut is all I have. And thanks to that prebiotic drink, it's, it's healthy now. So
11:34This one is American. This is Asian. I like the American one better.
11:43That was really, really tough. That was the hardest for sure for me.
11:47Let's see. I'm really curious.
11:51Hell yeah.
11:55I'm feeling really good that I trusted my instinct. I'm so happy.
12:00And this was the win that I, I felt like I needed. I just, I've seen these.
12:06They're called ding-dongs. What's giving ding-dong?
12:09I was surprised how little flavor both had. This is so fun. This is literally red,
12:14white and blue. It's like America. This is called dream cake. You're called dream cake.
12:19And I feel like I was your nightmare. Asian desserts can lead a little bit more
12:23subtle in flavor. So that would make sense. But I've always been like,
12:27I really love punchy, big flavors. Well, how many rounds did we do?
12:31I got four out of the five right? So I'm happy about that. It was so much harder than I
12:37expected.
12:37I really thought I was going to get it good. Thank you guys so much for watching.
12:41I had so much fun being here. Thank you so much for snacking with me.
12:46Peace out.
