00:08Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're here to take a look at 10 of the hardest
00:12final bosses to square off against in 90s video games. Let's do it.
00:22Before we begin, we publish new content all week long,
00:25so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:31Count Dracula, Castlevania, Dracula X.
00:41One simple word could easily sum up this entire entry, knockback. And if I'm allowed to use a
00:48second word, it would be knockback. Well, okay, now you might be saying to yourself,
00:52that's the same word, what gives? Well, you see, 90s Castlevania games, and many retro games by
00:58extension, have character knockback that can quickly spell defeat if you aren't careful.
01:03Well, such is the case when you are facing Count Dracula at the end of Dracula X. Instead of just
01:08a basic floor to position yourself on during this boss battle, you must platform between stone pillars
01:14in this boss arena. I've already buried the lead here, but yes, one knockback from Dracula's attacks
01:20could send you into the abyss to your doom, having to then restart the whole battle again. It's a brutal
01:25fight that tests your pixel perfect precision and your pattern recognition skills. Good freaking luck.
01:39Whizpig Future Funland Diddy Kong Racing
01:49I mean, come on, there's no way that a colorful, vibrant kart racer for the N64 could have a tough
01:55as all get out final boss, right? Oh, the naivete. Whizpig will certainly punish your hubris. The final
02:02race showdown against the rocket riding Whizpig in Future Funland feels completely cruel, unless, and this
02:09is a big unless, you have a completely perfect racing line. Yeah, right. Something that will only come
02:14from trying, trying, and trying some more to defeat this game's big bad. Yes, if you didn't guess,
02:20persistence is key here since you will need to essentially be a flawless Diddy Kong racing player
02:25to achieve that coveted first place finish in order to quell Whizpig's on-course shenanigans.
02:30There's just so much to contend with here that it often stopped many players from conquering the great
02:35adventure mode in this game. Electricity, lasers, space boulders, oh my. What fun.
02:51Vortex Queen Echo the Dolphin
02:58Now, I don't know about you, but I for one was not at all prepared for the intense tonal shift
03:03that
03:03Echo the Dolphin throws your way, from fun aquatic adventuring to full-on aquatic horror.
03:09I also never beat this game as a kid, mostly down to the game's final boss, the Vortex Queen.
03:15This Lovecraftian-slash-H.R. Giger-esque alien abomination is brutal to deal with. Apart from the
03:21minuscule boss arena where the queen takes up the majority of real estate, Echo has to deal with all
03:27manner of damaging projectiles and alien attacks while trying to attempt to bash the jaw off this
03:33behemoth before laying down the final coup de gras on her. It's so relentless and creepy in equal
03:41measure. Her lumbering size and tight hitbox ensures many Echo the Dolphin players, myself included,
03:46never saw the Dolphin saved, nor the credits roll.
03:57Gygas Earthbound
04:07Seriously, what is it with 90s games and their penchant for pure nightmare fuel? I mean,
04:11did the developers just want to scar a generation of gamers? Perhaps, I don't know.
04:16Battling Gygas at the end of Earthbound is a testament of two ends of the spectrum.
04:21One end being the psychological manipulation, depravity, and despair of evil,
04:26and the other end of that spectrum being the beautiful and incredible power of human connection,
04:31togetherness, and prayer. These ideas coalesce when facing down Gygas. Instead of the mechanical
04:37turn-based depth of, I don't know, something like Ultima Sia from Final Fantasy VIII, or even the
04:42intricacy and complexity of an upcoming RPG final boss on this list, this showdown with Ness and company
04:48against Gygas weaves in the beauty and goodness of humanity fused with divine prayer in order to
04:54defeat the powers of darkness. This is why Gygas, as a final boss, is both challenging and harrowing to
04:59face, and also timeless for many 90s gamers out there.

05:22The Dark Queen Battletoads. While Battletoads is often remembered for its punishing gatekeeping levels,
05:28such as Turbo Tunnels and Terra Tubes, its brutal boss battles are often left out of the conversation
05:33when it comes to difficulty. Well, any Battletoads players out there that made it through to the end
05:39to fight the Dark Queen know just how tense this final boss can be. The Dark Queen is a nimble
05:44and
05:44nefarious whirling tornado of death that can lead the titular Toads to peril if not playing carefully
05:50and deliberately. She can easily knock away your health as fast as she darts about the arena.
05:54Just make sure you pummel her any chance you get and you should, hopefully, come out as the victor.
06:07Alien Brain slash Armored Alien Brain, Contra 3 The Alien Wars.
06:19It's Contra. Of course it's going to be hard, right? But it's hard to say if even Contra fans were
06:25prepared for the Alien Brain showdown in Super Nintendo's Alien Wars. While the final form of
06:30this Alien Brain, its armored version, might be quick to put down if you constantly fire without a break,
06:36it's actually the pre-armored form, the fleshy, gooey, one-eyed brain form that tests your Contra
06:42resolve and nerves. Heck, even getting to the Alien Brain is a relentless task in this game.
06:47But once you do enter its domain, you best be prepared to stay mobile, stay on the offensive,
06:53and never cease attacking. Yes, its brain is obviously exposed, but trying to get potshots of
06:58your own off on it while avoiding the barrage of projectiles that fill the screen is certainly a tough
07:03task. Only the most skilled Contra players will make it through this final boss battle.
07:15Lavos slash Lavos Core Chrono Trigger
07:25So here we are at that RPG final boss that I alluded to earlier in this list, Lavos.
07:30Lavos is not to be trifled with, not by a long shot. You and your party better know how and
07:36when to use
07:36your attacks, your combos, and your tech if you hope to survive this intense and brutal gauntlet.
07:41One that will likely require you to revive more often than you'd like.
07:46Now, the first part of this final boss against Lavos is challenging enough as you attempt to quell
07:51its varied attacks and powers, all while keeping up your resistances without getting on the back foot.
07:56Then, after some dialogue, Lavos augments into its core form, a form that draws from various sources
08:02of power and energy. Here, your party can quickly, and we do mean quickly, be decimated. You must rely
08:08on each other's synergies if you hope to have a fighting chance. It's a time-consuming two-part final
08:14boss battle that ensures you haven't taken its turn-based combat lightly.
08:29Queen Metroid Metroid 2 Return of Samus
08:32Sometimes, the shortest final boss showdowns are actually the toughest since they toss so much at
08:38you so quickly that you have little time to prepare or even react. Well, such is the case when battling
08:44Queen Metroid in 1991's Return of Samus for Game Boy. If her extendable neck melee attacks that
08:50seemingly hone in on you weren't enough to deal with, then her deadly projectiles will ensure that
08:55you don't have any breathing room at all. And, to add fuel to the fire here, Samus's back will quite
09:08literally be up against a wall, since she basically has nowhere to dodge except for up and down. How
09:14anyone at all can beat Queen Metroid without taking any damage is simply beyond me. Dr. Wily, Mega Man 7.
09:29Mega Man and hard bosses are sort of synonymous by this point, but none truly takes the cake more
09:35than the two-part showdown against Dr. Wily in Mega Man 7. To be fair, phase one against Dr. Wily's
09:41hulking skull robot isn't too bad, since it does move slow and you are able to avoid attacks fairly
09:47easily. Well, I mean, apart from the self-destructing mini-me robots. However, it's phase two that truly ups
09:53the ante here. Just when you thought you could take a moment to chill out, Dr. Wily pops back in,
09:59floating around the arena in his spike-adorned, elemental-imbued mini-spacecraft. Here, Dr. Wily
10:04can zip and dart about the boss arena, swiftly avoiding you, all while spamming powerful elemental
10:10projectiles that can stop Mega Man dead in his tracks. It's honestly a surprisingly lengthy phase,
10:15since his health bar feels like it barely whittles down with each shot that you manage to land.
10:20That sense of accomplishment for besting this foe, though, is second to none.
10:30Death Egg Robot Sonic the Hedgehog 2
10:39I honestly still get a twinge of terror any time I see gameplay for this final battle in Sonic 2,
10:45the game that my older sister and I spent the majority of time with back in the early 90s on
10:50our Sega Genesis. Yes, even just getting to Death Egg Zone as a whole back as a kid was challenging
10:56enough to be sure, requiring us to often just leave our Genesis on, game paused, so we wouldn't lose any
11:02progress when we had to go off to Sunday school, hoping our mom and dad wouldn't mistakenly reset or
11:07turn off our beloved console. But I digress. Now, on the surface, this boss fight doesn't really look too bad,
11:14but trying to pummel this robotic behemoth while avoiding his stomps, his lock-on attacks,
11:19and mini robots isn't easy in the slightest. And heaven help you if you happen to start this battle
11:24with zero rings.
11:38So, what did you think of our picks for this list? What are the hardest bosses from 90s games that
11:42you battled your way through? Let us know in the comments.
