00:00Angels fans are in heaven. Forget angels in the outfield. We're talking about angels in the
00:07owner's box. Take a look at this. Heaven spent. A transaction so nice the California Post had to
00:16cover it twice. Halo effect. What effect do we expect from San Kroenke who's going to purchase
00:23the Angels for a Major League Baseball record four billion dollars from Artie Moreno? Who had the
00:30Angels in purgatory if not held for the last two decades past? California Post senior writer Michael
00:36Duarte is going to join me and talk us through it. Angels fans rejoice. Shine time starts right now.
00:50You know, fresh start. I think, I mean, you kind of felt that way. It was needed. You know,
00:57no bad things, no bad hard feelings against Artie. But, yeah, no, I'm super excited. The guys are
01:05excited. There's a good, you know, vibe around the clubhouse, vibe around the stadium, and we're all
01:10excited. Zach said earlier that you talked to some Rams players. Who was that and what they have to
01:15say about playing for Stan? Yeah, and I reached out to one Ram player, but he exaggerates a little
01:21bit, but I'm not going to drop any names, but I spoke to one, and he had some really good
01:28things to
01:28say. Mike, you know, your loyalty to the Angels. I'm assuming you're kind of piggybacking up Bill's
01:33question here. I assume in part was tied to Artie. Yeah. Now that he's not here, does it change at
01:38all?
01:38No, it doesn't change. I got four years left on my deal. I'm excited. You know, look, it's,
01:46you know, the track record, it's there. So, super excited to meet him and talk to him, and
01:54get to know him a little bit and see where it goes.
01:57Oh, baby, if you think Angels fans are happy, imagine how our guy Mike Trout feels. You can feel
02:03it in the comments. He was respectful to Artie Moreno, who drafted him and obviously paid him
02:07handsomely, but Mike Trout knows. Just like the rest of us, things are about to change for
02:15the Angels, and it's about time. Stan Kroenke, the championship owner of the L.A. Ramps, the
02:22Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche, and Arsenal in the Premier League, has agreed to purchase
02:28the Angels from Artie Moreno for a heavenly sum of $4 billion. This is heaven sent. This
02:41is unbelievable. $4 billion! I mean, look at this! And honestly, if you're a fan of the
02:48Angels and you have been living in hell, this is worth every single penny. The Angels won
02:54their one and only World Series back in 2002. The next year, Artie Moreno purchased the team
03:00for a reported $180 million. And let's be honest here, under Artie Moreno, this team has become
03:10a disgrace, a complete embarrassment. You look at the Angels under Moreno, this is pure hell.
03:1812 losing seasons. Zero A.L. pennants. And they absolutely squandered and wasted Mike Trout's legendary
03:31career. They wasted Shohei Ohtani. Moreno was clueless. He was meddlesome. He got involved in the
03:40day-to-day. Everyone knew that Shohei Ohtani was going to leave because Artie Moreno screwed up the
03:45entire team. And they had a deal worked out. They were going to send them to Tampa Bay, get a
03:50ton of
03:51great players, including Kevin Aro, and Artie said, nah, we're good. You can't make this up. I mean,
03:58the Albert Pujols contract, the Josh Hamilton contract. Man, I can't believe that this clueless
04:07owner, the worst of the worst, had Shohei Ohtani, who picked the Angels and watched him pick up and
04:13leave. They never made the playoffs with Shohei Ohtani. Think about that. Never made the playoffs.
04:21I have to fight people when I talk about Mike Trout as an all-time great because you never saw
04:28him in
04:28the playoffs because Artie Moreno was the worst. He never was seen in Orange County. He didn't like
04:35L.A. He was never at the ballpark, never around the team. He just did it for his own joy
04:41and ruined an
04:43amazing fan base. I will always argue Angels fans are incredible. I mean, go back to that likable team
04:50in 2002 when they won the World Series and the Rally Monkey. And, you know, they were just incredible
04:56with Garrett Anderson and Troy Gloss and, you know, David Eckstein and Scott Spezia and John Lackey. I
05:03mean, we could go through the entire bunch. This team was unbelievable. And then you get this gift of
05:10having Mike Trout, who's unreal, and you just waste him. I mean, the fact that we didn't get to see
05:16Mike Trout year after year when it was all said and done in the playoffs in Major League Baseball. And
05:23that ballpark is beautiful. The fans are passionate. And he alienated all of it. If you remember,
05:30Artie Moreno was supposed to sell the team. It was a done deal a couple of years ago and decided
05:35at the end
05:35of the day, he had a change of heart, ripping the hearts out, ultimately, of the amazing Angels fans.
05:44So you look at Artie Moreno, and we've made this case before on Shine Time, the worst owner in sports.
05:51And then you look at Stan Kroenke, you can make the case he is the best.
05:56I mean, look at this resume. Stan is the man. You want to talk about hitting a home run if
06:03you
06:04are a fan of the Angels. You go from the bottom of the battle, the worst of the worst, someone
06:10who
06:10doesn't give a damn about winning, doesn't care about the fans, to this? Kroenke, what he did with
06:16the Avalanche, the Nuggets, Arsenal. But most especially to me, the Rams. Taking the Rams, going
06:23from St. Louis to L.A., because every Angels fan has seen it. You can appreciate it. If you're
06:30an Angels fan, doesn't mean you necessarily follow the Denver Nuggets or you follow the
06:34Colorado Avalanche. The Rams are in your backyard. So you know, because you have been a tortured
06:42Angels fan for the last two decades, you now go from hell to heaven. You go from the worst
06:50to the best. When Stan Kroenke, it was announced that he's buying the Angels, I pumped my fist.
06:58I love Angels fans. I think the Angels fans are amazing. The owner ruined this fan base,
07:06absolutely tortured them. The fact that Mike Trout, Mike Trout never won a playoff series.
07:14The fact that they were clueless and reckless with spending, that Moreno was meddlesome. The fact
07:20that he alienated the fans. They couldn't win with Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout together. You go from
07:28the depths of despair as a sports fan to the top of the mountain. And you see what has happened
07:35with
07:35the Rams. You wrap your brain around it because it's in your backyard. The Rams are the best
07:43organization in sports. We've said as much. This is not an overreaction. We've called L.A.,
07:49the L.A. Rams, the best organization of the big four North American professional sports.
07:54That simple. And it starts with Kroenke. And a commitment to winning and understanding the market
08:02and understanding how to win with Kevin Demoff and Les Snead and Shaw McVay and making sure that you
08:10have the requisite great product on the fields and a team that in Los Angeles, California can not only
08:18be relevant and dominant but marketable and a team that's going to be entertaining and fun to watch.
08:24So if you're an Angels fan, you see it. And now I'll frame it this way. Think about what's going
08:33on
08:34instantly. Today, you go from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the mountain and the Angels
08:41now have better ownership than the Dodgers. Think about that for a second with everything going on
08:47with the Dodgers and that entire situation. So this is the ultimate transaction.
08:54This is the ultimate move. There is not a fan base on planet Earth that deserves it more.
09:01I mean, I just talked to Scott Spezia on my Sirius XM radio show the other day. I mean,
09:07he was telling stories about the fans when, you know, that Angels team was so likable and they won
09:12that World Series. You go back to, you know, Brian Downing and Nolan Ryan and, you know,
09:19Dave Henderson and Bobby Gritch. I mean, there's such a great history, tradition of Angels baseball.
09:27You think about, you know, Rodriguez and Percival closing out games and how dominant they were in
09:34the World Series. This is what the Angels fans deserve. And Artie Moreno ruined the entire thing.
09:41So to see this team go from the depths of sports hell to having the owner sell the team to
09:50the best
09:51owner in sports, the Ramps are the best organization in sports. And you can now understand this is what
10:00you're going to get with your baseball team. I am so happy for the long-suffering fans of the A
10:07&M.
10:07Coming up next, California Post senior sports reporter, my guy, Michael Duarte joined Shine Time
10:14to discuss the sale and what it means for the Angels fans, as well as the bigger picture in
10:18terms of pro sports in Southern California. Keep it locked on Shine Time.
10:23Joining us right now, California Post senior sports reporter Michael Duarte has been all over one of
10:29the biggest sports business stories in Southern California. The stunning, amazing sale of the Los
10:35Los Angeles Angels from Artie Moreno to Rams owner Stan Kroenke for a record $4 billion.
10:42Michael, how are you, my friends?
10:44It was great to see you making my Shine Time debut. We met and hung out a little bit at
10:49the Super Bowl,
10:49and so I'm finally glad to be on your show. It feels like a rite of passage when you work
10:53for
10:53the Post.
10:54Absolutely. And listen, I'm such a big fan of your work, and you have been all over this,
10:59your videos, the written word, and this is something that you have been covering ever
11:04since we started the California Post. So let's start, obviously, with the obvious question,
11:10because Angels fans have to be all sorts of fired up. What does Stan Kroenke owning the Angels
11:17mean for this franchise and for Angels fans?
11:21Well, you know what I've been seeing on social media, Adam, and I think it's appropriate,
11:25it's that old Barack Obama poster from the campaign in 2008, Hope and Change, you know,
11:31if you remember those back in the day. So for these Angels fans, it signifies hope.
11:37Hope that this 23-year, tumultuous tenure under Artie Moreno, which, let's be honest,
11:44you know, they won the World Series in 2002. Artie Moreno bought them five months later in April
11:49of 2023 from Walt Disney. They won five AL West division titles in his first six years,
11:55and then it all went downhill from there. They have not won a playoff game since 2009.
12:01They have not even made the playoffs since 2014. And then they had Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout on
12:07their roster at one point together, two generational superstar talents, and they couldn't even crack
12:13the postseason even once. I think they are looking forward to, with all the problems that have been
12:18going on with this team, with that stadium, with the city, for a new chapter to turn a page,
12:24to get that hope I just mentioned, a new hope to quote a Star Wars trilogy. And this is what
12:30they've been looking for and wanting. I've been covering this, as you mentioned, all season long.
12:34They've been chanting sell the team since the first month of the season, and they've been doing it
12:39for every single home game. They finally got their wish on Tuesday, and those chants went from sell
12:45the team to goodbye, Artie. And I think they were, you know, giving him a fond farewell there.
12:51And those videos were incredible, and they're all up right now on Instagram. Follow the California
12:56Post Sports. It's just incredible. I thought, Michael, and I've been outspoken on this, Artie Moreno
13:03was the worst. To waste Otani, to waste Trout, to be meddlesome, to really just antagonize
13:10the fans. I thought he was arguably, of the four major professional sports leagues in North
13:16American sports, the single worst owner who didn't give a damn about winning with the fans
13:22in Southern California. How would you characterize his legacy?
13:27That's a great question, you know, because we tend to forget, Adam, that Artie Moreno was
13:32the first Latino American owner in professional sports, first Latino owner in Major League
13:37Baseball, first Mexican-American owner in Major League Baseball, and to own a franchise in
13:43Southern California that has a huge Latino population, a huge Mexican-American population,
13:49the standard was really high for Artie Moreno when he took over in 2003. And like I mentioned,
13:54you know, he had a little bit of success in his first six seasons as owner, and his dream,
13:59he loved baseball growing up. His dream was to own a Major League Baseball team. I don't know if fans
14:03know this, but he was this close to buying the Arizona Diamondbacks back in the early 2000s from his
14:09friend Jerry Colangelo, and he had grown up in Tucson, Arizona, so that would have been kind of like his
14:14home team. So there was tremendous amount of pressure for him. There was pride, I think, in him in the
14:18very
14:18beginning. But obviously, as you mentioned, the meddlesome nature, this weird obsession with signing
14:25these huge, massive contracts to these aging superstars that were past their prime, that were
14:31just some of the worst deals in professional sports, and then not being able to implement or
14:36hire the right people to get him out of those situations. I think ultimately, the buck stops with
14:41him. And if Artie Moreno wants to blame anybody for the mess that the Angels have been in over the
14:45last
14:4612 seasons, it's analogous to being all alone in a carnival house of mirrors, right? Anywhere you
14:52look, you can just look at yourself. And that's exactly what you mentioned. One of the worst owners
14:57in sports, and that's how he'll go down, unfortunately, for his legacy with the Angels.
15:02Those contracts, I mean, Pujols, Hamilton, I mean, all of it. I mean, you knew in moments they were
15:07dreadful, and it was even worse. I mean, Rendon, I mean, you could argue that's the single worst
15:12contract in baseball history. We could keep going. Now, let's move it forward. Cronkies track record
15:18is obviously the ultimate reason for optimism. I mean, Angels fans were celebrated yesterday
15:23just by knowing that Moreno was selling. The fact, Michael, to me, that Cronkies buying, I mean,
15:30that's unbelievable. We could talk Rams and Avalanche and Nuggets and Arsenal. I mean,
15:34the whole thing. And for Angels fans, you see it with the L.A. Rams, so you can wrap your
15:41brain
15:42around it. What does Cronkies do so well, so differently that you think could translate
15:47when it comes to baseball? Yeah, you have your board there. You know, Stan Cronkies like Thanos.
15:53He just collects sports franchises like Infinity Stones, and the one Infinity Stone missing from
15:58his gauntlet on his hand was a Major League Baseball franchise, as you show the graphic up there.
16:03And now he finally has that. Not only does he own every single professional sport here in the
16:08United States, but he also has a Premier League team over in Europe as well. And, you know,
16:14we know how big international football is, especially from the World Cup. And so what we,
16:19what his track record has been, Adam, is everywhere he goes, he wins. He wins a championship.
16:24The Denver Nuggets won a championship. The Los Angeles Rams have won a Super Bowl
16:28and have a stacked roster. Our Super Bowl favorites again this year. The Colorado Avalanche have won
16:32two championships there. The Colorado Rapids won a championship in MLS under his tenure and under
16:37his watch. So wherever this man goes, he wins. And I sent your producer a photo after that photo
16:44right there of him holding the trophy after the Super Bowl. That was in February of 2022 at SoFi
16:49Stadium. About an hour or two after that photo was taken, I was celebrating and partying with him,
16:54talking to him, congratulating him as he had that big cigar. And what I found from just engaging with
17:01him after reaching the peak of the mountaintop and coming home triumphant with the Lombardi trophy
17:06in his hands was this man, he might not be an athlete. It might be a businessman, but he is
17:12a
17:12competitor at heart. He loves competition. He loves to win. And that is why he's willing to do whatever it
17:18takes to win. So you asked, how does he do it? My opinion is he's not afraid to spend. He's
17:23not
17:24afraid to put a big, a good product on the field. This is a man we forget who bought the
17:28land where
17:29the old Hollywood Park racetrack and casino was in Inglewood years before, you know, the Rams had
17:34even moved to Los Angeles, but he had a vision in mind that he was going to build not just
17:39the
17:39greatest stadium in the world, a $7 billion SoFi stadium, but build everything around it, make a
17:45whole park theme park of sorts. And he's doing the same thing in Woodland Hills at the Rams practice
17:51facility. We're talking restaurants, apartments, venues, movie theaters, retail shops. He's doing
17:57the same thing in Inglewood. He's doing the same thing right now in Woodland Hills. And I know the city
18:01of Anaheim owns the land where Angel Stadium is. It's about 150 acres. Artie Marino has been
18:06complaining about that for years. But if Stan Kroenke gets the opportunity, I think he's going
18:11to want to buy that land and develop it and create something similar that we're seeing in Inglewood
18:15that we're seeing in Woodland Hills with the Rams practice facility in Anaheim where the Angel
18:20Stadium currently stands. And that's something that isn't just about winning, but giving fans
18:24a great experience as they go along the way. So I anticipate, look, turning this Angels team around
18:30that has lost more than Shohei Otani's interpreter over the last handful of years is going to be
18:35difficult, obviously. But the first thing I expect him to do is hire the right people,
18:39put them in place to start building the right winning habits, whether that's analytics,
18:45whether that's scouting, whether that's building new facilities, recovery facilities, training,
18:50investing in the farm system, which we've seen with the Los Angeles Dodgers is a way to get back
18:54on the winning track fast because you can trade pieces to get pieces. You can promote within. So I
19:00think these are the things that Stan Kroenke is going to do right off the bat to try to turn
19:03this
19:03around as quickly as possible. Without question. I think you articulated that eloquently and
19:08brilliantly. And I've called the Rams the best organization in the NFL. And Stan has put together
19:14an unbelievable team where we could talk about, you know, someone like Kevin Demoff and Les Snead
19:19and Sean McVay and their PR staff with our guy Artis is the best in the business. So do you
19:25think that
19:25we could see real synergy between the Rams and the Angels? Is that possible? I think so. You know,
19:33people forget that the Rams used to play in Anaheim when they were in Los Angeles. I was a kid
19:38growing up here in Los Angeles in the 80s. My dad driving me out to Anaheim to go see Rams
19:44game. So
19:44these two teams are synonymous with each other, in my opinion, because of that history dating back 45
19:52years and sometimes even longer. It's human nature to think that the Rams and the Angels would not
20:01kind of go blend together with Kroenke owning both teams. But what I can say is I haven't seen much
20:06crossover between, you know, the Denver Nuggets and the Rams or the Colorado Avalanche or Rapids and
20:11the Rams. But for people I've spoken to in Denver, those three teams that Kroenke owns in that city
20:16and in that market, they're cross promoting and sharing and having players go from here to there
20:21all the time. So I think that's where it's going to start. You know, once Stan puts his own people
20:26in place, once the MLB owners vote on this and get him in, which I think is going to be
20:30a unanimous
20:31vote to get him as an MLB owner of the Angels. Once that takes place, which I'm understanding is early
20:37next season, early 2027, you're going to start to see Angels players, whether it's Zach Neto or Mike
20:43Trout or maybe some future superstars. We're not even mentioning you're talking about right now.
20:47You're going to see him in suites at Rams games next season. You're going to see that synergy you
20:53just talked about. You're going to see a Rams bobblehead night, for example, out at the Angels
20:58Stadium. You're going to see a Rams night where they bring players out to throw the first pitch and do
21:02things. Those are the kind of things that are going to start to slowly gel this together. But I think,
21:06like I said, you can safely assume that the Rams and Angels are now going to start to kind of
21:12go
21:12hand in hand, which is interesting for this team because it feels like the Rams and Dodgers
21:16have kind of built something. But I'm assuming that's going to start to change now over the next
21:20few years. Similarly to your point, Adam, when LAFC kind of burst onto the scene in 2018,
21:27they became the new kind of Dodgers soccer MLS franchise, where prior to that, there was an LA Galaxy
21:32night. LA Galaxy players would come out and throw the first pitch. We don't see that at Dodger
21:36Stadium anymore. It'll be a slow kind of fade away and dissolve as Cronky now runs the Angels and has
21:42them kind of link up together. Dodgers have been as relevant and dominant as, you know, a franchise
21:48could be a stranglehold when it comes to the LA sports scene. And I think the LA sports fan is
21:53amazing. Angels have been losing and obviously irrelevant in terms of the, you know, big picture
22:00in Major League Baseball. I know that Angels fans exist and I know they're amazing and they're
22:06passionate and they're diehard. And we've seen that through the years. Can Stan Cronky turn the
22:13Angels into a legit competitor when you take a look at the marketplace for Southern California sports?
22:20100%. And all it takes is what I've told every single franchise that has either come here or moved
22:26here over the years of the decades. I told the same thing to the owners of LAFC when they wanted
22:31me
22:31to come out and cover the team in their first inaugural season. I said, if you win, people will
22:36come. I will come. The media will come. People will show up and they'll want to be there. So that
22:41is
22:41how you do it. Stan Cronky is a proven winner. He needs to get this Angels team to win. As
22:45I mentioned,
22:46he's got to hire the right people and start to turn it around. It could be a slow build to
22:50get there.
22:50But once he gets there, LA is kind of a bandwagon city. I remember I was in college in 2002,
22:56Adam,
22:57and on Halloween, people were dressed up as an Angels bandwagon riding down the street,
23:01telling everyone to jump in and have a shot with them. And I can see that coming again because that
23:06stadium in Angel Stadium in 2002 was packed every night. It was the rally monkey. It was popping.
23:12It was loud. And it was a fun, good time. And they need to bring those good times back. And
23:17you know, I've been to Angel Stadium recently. There's rats, there's cockroaches, there's
23:23possums running around. I think this is going to be a process where we're going to see changes to
23:28the stadium, whether it's improvements, whether it's kind of remodeling it, or whether it's just
23:33tearing it down and starting over. We're going to see a lot of changes with this team. The name
23:37could even change. My guess is he cuts the deal with Anaheim and it becomes the Anaheim Angels,
23:42no longer the Los Angeles Angels. We'll see about that. But that's kind of what I think with this new
23:47bill passing soon that Gavin Newsom signed into law a few days ago. I see a lot of changes
23:51happening. And once those changes happen, then this team will start to win. And I think everyone
23:55will follow. We've now seen the Lakers sell for roughly 12 bill Padres for 3.9 bill Angels for
24:03four bill in a short period of time. Michael, why has Southern California become ground zero for this
24:09ownership carousel? I like that ground zero. Those are my words. I like that, Adam. It's unbelievable
24:14because we have seen three huge marquee franchises in Southern California, as you just mentioned,
24:21in the Los Angeles Lakers, arguably the crown jewel of all sports franchises here in the City of Angels.
24:27The San Diego Padres down south, which was part of the Seidler family and the O'Malley family for so,
24:33so long. And now you have Artie Marino who'd owned this team for 23 years. That's three franchises,
24:39huge marquee franchises in this market, selling to new owners in less than a month. And so to answer your
24:45question, why is this happening? It's because of what you just mentioned first, $12 billion. That was the
24:52evaluation that Josh Kushner, son-in-law, sorry, brother of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Bob Iger,
25:00the former CEO of Disney, purchased the Lakers at an evaluation of $12 billion. That is insane, astronomical
25:07numbers to think about. Obviously, the largest sale in professional sports in history.
25:12When you see evaluations that are like 30, 25, 30, going for 25 or 30 times what revenue is for
25:20those
25:20teams, it starts to become unthinkable what people are paying. And if you're an owner out there,
25:27whether you were, you know, it's not a coincidence, obviously, the Seidler family, Peter Seidler
25:30passed away. There was a drama and controversy surrounding who would own the team and how
25:37they would move forward. So they chose to sell. Obviously, Artie Marino was getting pressure to
25:42sell, but he was going to sell a couple years ago, and then he decided to pull it off the
25:45table.
25:46I think seeing these skyrocketing evaluations, I think as much as Artie wants to own the team,
25:51and I'm told he's still going to be a minority owner, so he's still going to get to be a
25:55part of it,
25:55just like Jeannie Buss is going to still get to be a part of the Lakers, more than likely. Obviously,
26:00some court challenges are coming up. That's kind of like having your cake and eating it too, right?
26:07Let this private equity come in. Let big, big ownership who have unlimited pocketbooks come in.
26:12Let them make the changes I can't make, but yet I can still participate and be a part of the
26:16fun as
26:17a minority owner. I can still go to games. I can still be in the suites. I can still kiss
26:21babies,
26:22shake hands with fans and players, and be a part of it, and that's what I think is the lure
26:26in what
26:27you're seeing, and let's be honest right now, owning a sports franchise anywhere in the world right now
26:34is one of the greatest and hottest investments you could possibly have, especially at these
26:38evaluations, especially at the money they're making, and that money is largely because of these
26:43television contracts that you're seeing. I think the NBA just signed a $79 billion television rights
26:48contract. Major League Baseball just had a new television rights contract. When you see the
26:53numbers coming from these television contracts, when you see streamers like Netflix and Amazon Prime
26:58wanting a piece of the NFL and wanting a piece of live sports, you can see the directions and the
27:03future
27:03that this is headed and why it's making so much money and why these huge billionaires want this
27:08investment, and because there's only a finite amount of sports franchises available, there's a scarcity,
27:14and in business, it's supply and demand, and when there's not enough of a supply, but the demand
27:19right now is through the roof, then you see these astronomical evaluations, and it's only a matter of
27:24time before an owner looks at what they paid to what they could sell it for now and how much
27:30money
27:30they could make. In the case of Artie Marino, it's 177 times what he paid for it back in 2003,
27:35and that's
27:35just in 23 years. So I think this is not just going to be a one-off here in Southern
27:41California and on all
27:43the country for professional sports. I think this is kind of the beginning of something that we're
27:47going to see happening more and more as these evaluations continue to explode. Excellent stuff.
27:52You can read all of Michael's coverage in the California Post and make sure you follow him on
27:56X. He's an amazing follow on social media at Michael J. Duarte. Michael, as always great stuff.
28:02We appreciate it. Absolutely, and I look forward to hanging out with you in the Super Bowl in L.A.
