00:07persist through to February, the United Nations Climate Agency warned on Thursday.
00:12According to the UN's World Meteorological Organization, WMO, El Nino will peak towards the end of this year, though its
00:21knock-on impact for the climate will continue well into 2027.
00:25El Nino is firmly established and will make big impact on rainfall and temperature patterns with associated risk of flood,
00:34drought and extreme heat, the WMO said.
00:38The natural climate phenomenon not caused by climate change typically takes place every two to seven years and lasts around
00:46nine to twelve months.
00:48It tends to peak late in the year, but heat in the oceans releases more slowly into the atmosphere, pushing
00:57up global temperatures the following year.
00:59Scientists expect El Nino to exacerbate the heat of the planet already warming from burning fossil fuels while amping up
01:07weather extremes.
