00:01Actor and philanthropist George Clooney warns advances in artificial intelligence are making it increasingly difficult to distinguish truth from fiction.
00:09It's going to get harder and harder and harder for us to discern the truth.
00:13And worse than that, because you've poisoned the well of saying, maybe this is true, maybe this isn't,
00:20then when you see real things that are really true, people are able to say, well, that's fake.
00:25Clooney spoke at the Venice Film Festival where he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Wednesday, September 2.
00:32Clooney also links the AI challenge to wider concerns about journalism.
00:37He notes media ownership became concentrated in the hands of a small number of wealthy individuals.
00:42The richest people in the world right now are owning the Washington Post and Twitter and most of the places
00:49we get our information and that is a concern.
00:51Clooney also says he recently met leading AI developers and was unconvinced current safeguards would be enough to keep pace
00:58with improvements in the technology.
00:59The state of journalism is always in flux, always challenged, but I do believe that information will find its way
