Mike Johnson doesn't hold back on his concerns regarding the Atlanta Falcons short-term fixes and lost draft capital. Alongside Beau Morgan on 92.9 The Game, the crew breaks down the Gervon Dexter Sr. trade, the impact of losing draft picks, and whether expecting compensatory picks is enough to protect the team's future. Can this Falcons roster make the playoffs without mortgaging what comes next

00:00Like, do you think that he'd have the same answer,
00:01we're competing to get in the playoffs?
00:02Or do you think his answer in two years would be,
00:05we're competing to win a championship?
00:07I think there's a distinct difference.
00:11No, I think you're right.
00:13I think he answered that the way he answered it,
00:15the way it was asked.
00:17I think he was asked about what, you know,
00:20what's the goal, and the goal is,
00:22the problem is, I don't want to go cliche on you,
00:28but it's always stated publicly,
00:31and I think a lot of times,
00:33and then you can answer this inside the building,
00:35but inside those meeting rooms and that locker room is,
00:39first goal is to make the playoffs.
00:41It's always win the division, right?
00:42Which is kind of the easiest way to make the playoffs.
00:44That's what they'll tell you.
00:45The easiest way is win the division.
00:46It's not wrong.
00:49I'm sure as he gets his guys in,
00:51and they feel like they've built this foundation,
00:54and they're not, you know, 10 days away from naming a start,
00:58you know, from the first game to name a start and quarterback,
01:00all that kind of stuff.
01:01I'm sure that is much easier to say it's a championship.
01:06But I thought it was interesting how he said,
01:08get in and just see what happens,
01:11which is the number one thing.
01:12They have, can, I disagree with a lot of people.
01:15The way they've made cuts and constructed the roster,
01:18it's not one where it's like, yeah, we're cool,
01:21whatever happens.
01:23I mean, if they were, they would have kept some of the,
01:25I felt like some of these one-year,
01:26like the Aziz's of the world.
01:28Well, it can help us a little bit,
01:30but they're building a little bit young,
01:32and because some of these guys have taken over spots,
01:36going and getting Javon Dexter, you know?
01:38Like, that's a move to me that you're clearly,
01:42it's win now and secure the bag for the future,
01:45and is in that position moving forward.
01:48So, the number one goal is to figure out the quarterback.
01:55Yeah.
01:57But can you do that with a roster that if you get average play from that position,
02:02and you figure that out with average play,
02:04and you know that that's, it's getting better each week,
02:08do you have a roster that can win?
02:09You need to do, I don't know, it's the same level,
02:13but the blueprint that Carolina has had over the last couple years
02:17is to put everything needed around the quarterback position
02:23that you know exactly what he is, right?
02:25And you go to the playoffs with that last year,
02:27and I would argue they still don't know what he is,
02:29even with all that, but they've continued to try to go that route.
02:31I just, I don't know, I have questions about now,
02:36and I have questions about the future,
02:38and I think, I know that they have a plan in place.
02:40We've talked about how much they love draft picks.
02:42Well, we're starting to get harder for draft picks, you know,
02:47and that's a little bit concerning for me.
02:49You do have, the good thing to remember is you did lose a fifth and a sixth,
02:56but based on everything the league is kind of handed at and put out,
03:01you'll get those picks back in compensatory picks.
03:04So technically you still have a full board of picks
03:09as far as walking in right now.
03:11So that's a good thing.
03:12And I think that's why they were a little bit more willing to play around,
03:15but don't you feel like they have built a roster
03:18that if you got average quarterback play,
03:23you could be competing to win nine to 11 games?
03:30I hope so.
03:32No, no, don't, don't hope.
03:33Don't tell me what you think.
03:34I mean, I want you to be honest with me.
03:35Like, I think you are, but like, I don't hope, like what,
03:38like what's top of mind for you?
03:40Do you think that?
03:42Like, I'm not trying to put your feet to the fire.
03:43I believe that.
03:44That's why I asked.
03:45I think we've made the best decisions we can make for now
03:47while not mortgaging in the future.
03:49I would agree with that.
03:51Take that for what it's worth.
03:51I don't think that they have, no, I don't think that they have filled this roster
03:55without holes everywhere that you could possibly fill it and say,
03:59hey, you know, you didn't go out and sign a four-year contract to a right tackle.
04:04And I know the timing of that was bad because when McGarry retired,
04:07but, you know, like, I don't know.
04:10You signed guys that you could afford for now,
04:13and I thought that what they were doing was keeping a lot of cap room
04:17and trying to compile draft picks.
04:18And with the, you missed on the Wanya thing that cost you a draft pick,
04:23then you traded another one for Javon Dexter.
04:26Interesting enough.
04:27I just don't know.
04:28Like, I'm just curious.
04:29I would be curious, and we said it all week,
04:30I'm curious to know where his head is at in terms of what this roster is
04:34and what that vision actually looks like.
04:36Yeah, and I'm not trying to, like, throw you out
04:37and hold your feet to the fire.
04:38I feel like they've got – the right tackle thing is such a solid point.
04:45The problem is is the timing.
04:47And you said it.
04:48They were really kind of hamstrung on how they could fix that.
