Synopsis

I had just started sixth grade, and that day, I stared bitterly at the handout I’d been given. “Wakakusa Committee Member”—that was the name given to the role assigned to upper-grade students at my elementary school: to support students in the special education class.

Escorting students to and from school, assisting with lunch, and supervising them during recess. All of these were nothing more than “duties” that cut into my precious free time.

“Why is it always me…?”

How many times had I muttered that bitter complaint on my way to Jun-chan’s house—who lived in the neighborhood—after waking up earlier than anyone else that morning? I cursed my misfortune at being chosen simply because we lived in the same neighborhood association.

Jun-chan was a boy with Down syndrome. Although he would sometimes stare at me intently with his big eyes, verbal communication was impossible. On the contrary, perhaps out of frustration that he couldn’t get his feelings across, he would suddenly lunge at me.

His sharp nails would scratch my arm, and he’d spit in my face. It was a daily occurrence for him to yank my prized long hair with all his might, bringing tears to my eyes.

“I can’t take this anymore. I want to quit.”

There were times I wanted to run crying to my mother. But if I gave up, this burden would simply fall on another friend. That sense of responsibility was the only thing barely keeping me by Jun-chan’s side.

However, as the seasons passed, something “more than words” gradually—yet surely—accumulated between us.

One afternoon after school, I found myself unconsciously standing in front of Jun-chan, who was being teased by a group of classmates. As I raised my voice, shouting, “Stop it!” Jun-chan looked up at me from behind, gripping the hem of my shirt tightly. I could feel the tremor in his hand all the way to my fingertips.

On another day, the yellow hat he cherished was blown away by the wind. From dusk until the streetlights began to come on, we searched through the bushes, getting covered in mud. When I placed the hat I’d found on his head, Jun-chan gave me a carefree smile. That was the first time I’d ever seen a response from his “heart.”

Amid the whirlwind of days passing by, the high wall within me—known as a “sense of duty”—was gradually chipped away.

And then came graduation day.

It was just as I was about to walk out the school gate with my diploma in hand, after the solemn ceremony had ended. There, the homeroom teacher from the special education class and several students were lined up, waiting for me. Standing in the center was Jun-chan, all dressed up.

He stepped forward with a shy smile. In his hand was a slightly lopsided necklace made of colorful origami squares strung together.

Jun-chan placed it around my neck …

01:44I then searched around Yabe.
01:45When I put the hat that had been found on her head, Jun-chan saw
01:49A carefree smile.
01:50That was the first time I had ever seen a heartfelt response from him.
01:55In the midst of these hectic days, what was inside me
01:58The high wall known as the "compulsory officer" is being chipped away little by little.

02:02Then, on the day of the graduation ceremony, after the solemn ceremony, the graduation certificate...
02:06It was when I was about to leave the school gate.
02:08There, I found the homeroom teacher of the special education class and several students.
02:12Chi was waiting in line.
02:14At the center of it all was Jun-chan, all dressed up.
02:17He smiled shyly and took a step forward.
02:20In her hand, she held a small piece of origami paper made by joining together various colors.
02:24There was a necklace with an odd shape.
02:26Jun-chan put it around my neck and then kissed my trembling lips for the rest of my life
02:30I moved it with all my might.
02:31Oh, big sister, thank you for everything up until now, even though it's a bit hesitant, just one word.
02:37Each word carried such weight that it felt as if it were chipping away at my very soul.
02:41The teacher next to me was wiping the corner of her eye as she explained.
02:44I'm going to give this to my older sister at the graduation ceremony to thank her.
02:47Jun-chan has been practicing her vocal exercises for months now.
02:52Usually, I get fed up and run away right away, but this time I didn't even once
02:55He never complained or showed any weakness.
02:56Please give them some praise.
02:58At that moment, my vision became severely distorted. I also felt the pain of my hair being pulled,
03:02The morning drowsiness, the days I didn't want to go, everything
03:05They surged into my chest as brilliant particles of light.
03:08I broke down crying on the spot and hugged Jun-chan.
03:12I'm sorry, and thank you—these words got mixed together and I couldn't form them into words.
03:16More than a decade has passed since then.
03:18Currently, I work as a caregiver at a private facility for people with disabilities.

03:33I heard he passed away.
03:34The "thank you" we exchanged that day turned out to be the last words I ever spoke to him.
03:38When you're stuck at work and feel lonely because no one understands you,
03:42I pick up that necklace that I still cherish and keep safe.
03:46As I touched the faded origami, I heard his hesitant voice.
03:49I feel like I can hear it.
03:51Keep going, my little companion who will continue to live on in my heart
03:55They're gently pushing me forward again today.
