00:03We've still been calling it a tropical rainstorm even today
00:07because it's still producing some locally heavy rain.
00:09Center of circulation is becoming a little more disembodied,
00:12but still to the south, a downpour or two with drenching rain.
00:16But as that fades, we begin to turn our attention to the core of this holiday weekend,
00:21and we're going to have a lot of heat, intense heat, in fact, in parts of the southern plains.
00:26And sometimes we talk about the ring of fire.
00:28Now, this is not, like, the perfect example of a ring of fire,
00:31but a lot of the principle behind this does hold true.
00:34Some sinking air under the heat dome, and then around the periphery of that,
00:38instead of that sinking air like a lid over the atmosphere,
00:41there are these zones of rising motion and the boundary between air masses,
00:45where we have fronts set up here, separating the heat from the cooler air in the northeast and the northwest.
00:49There's your thunderstorm zone.
00:51So our front's going to drop south, and we're going to have off and on storms.
00:53So as we focus on the southeastern part of this conversation,
00:56we will be dealing with some strong storms, not just this evening and tonight in some parts of the mid
01:01-Atlantic,
01:02but looking forward into Saturday, the Carolinas, the area near I-10, numerous thunderstorms,
01:08and there's still a lot of heat out there as well.
01:10So I don't want you to miss that.
01:12Fort Smith, Arkansas, 104.
01:14That would tie the record high for tomorrow's date.
01:16We've been there on the 5th of September of 1947.
01:21We did it again September 5th, 1998.
01:23We're going to probably add 20, 26 to that list.
01:25We'll be close to records in places like Wichita and Fayetteville, North Carolina,
01:29almost to a record in Raleigh.
01:30We will probably break a record in Wilmington, North Carolina.
01:33The record high for September 5th there is 95 from 1921, 1983, and then again just three years ago.
01:39We're forecasting 97 this year.
01:41Big-time heat out there.
01:43And Saturday, here come the storms.
01:45So here's your thunderstorm zone.
01:47Remember that ring of fire concept?
01:50The worst of the heat will be southwest, I think of Arkansas kind of as the epicenter of that.
01:53So the northeastern fringe, yeah, it's going to be hot in Raleigh,
01:56but the day's going to end with some gusty thunderstorms and also the risk for some flash flooding.
02:01So those are some big concerns here as we move on into the beginning of the weekend of the southeast.
02:05Saturday, here come the storms from West Virginia to Virginia down through the Carolinas.
02:08They'll be pretty widespread out there.
02:11Sunday, quick look ahead to Sunday's severe risk zone a little farther south, Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of Alabama.
