00:03Richard Hall never feels more at home than when he's working or playing in his workshop.
00:09He learned to make guitars when he was just 19, then fell into a career teaching woodwork at high school.
00:19In the background I had a little workshop and I just like to make things in the workshop
00:23using my cabinet making skills that I learnt all those many years ago.
00:28But when his son started playing the violin, the call to make music proved too strong to resist.
00:36All the while I was just tinging away in the shed trying to make instruments that could keep up with
00:41his skill level.
00:43I still haven't got there.
00:45He opened a store in South Gippsland to sell his guitars.
00:51But when local fiddler Ellen Hubbell walked through the door, she asked him to make her a violin.
00:56This is the first violin I've started.
00:59I set the store up to provide a channel for me to make violins.
01:05Richard spent months hand crafting a bespoke violin out of Australian hardwood, getting his son Tony,
01:11now a member of a chamber orchestra in Finland, to test it out.
01:18And once both were happy, it was time to hand it over to its new owner.
01:24It's an incredibly personal experience.
01:28It sort of feels like a once in a lifetime experience because these instruments are permanent
01:34and they're handed down through generations.
