00:00This is the most confusing rescue we've ever had. Meet Francis. He's tiny, undeniably cute,

00:06and yet nobody wanted him. He's had countless meet and greets at the shelter, but for some

00:11reason everyone kept walking away. So we brought him home to find out what everyone else was

00:16missing. It's heartbreaking to see a dog this small so misunderstood, but we did start to find

00:21out his real problems and it felt like we're truly his last chance. So our journey to give

00:25Francis the life he's missed starts right now. We're moving Francis around in a crate because

00:36he doesn't like being handled and has a bit of a history with nipping. We want to get him to

00:40the

00:40other side of the fence so he can eventually meet our dogs there. Okay, here's him. He's in the other

00:46side. Let him out. He's wagging his tail, which is good. We've gotten him some water and we put it

00:53in

00:53the shade so it doesn't get hot. He seems to be exploring a bit, which is good. We heard that

00:57he

00:57could be a bit nervous in new places, so the fact that he's exploring is good. He's definitely just

01:01had a pee on his lead from that initial reaction of him in his crate. When we brought Francis in

01:06and

01:06he barked, our dogs were on the other side of him, but we're hoping he was just scared because he

01:11was

01:11in a confined space. So whilst he's having a drink, oh my god, I don't want to get too close

01:15and frighten him.

01:16His tail's up, but you can't see right now. But if his tail wasn't up, he's got like a really

01:21big

01:21matting spot around his tail. You can kind of like see around his bum. He's pretty matted as well

01:26and we are wondering if that matting is hurting him a bit, but obviously the problem with him is

01:30because he's nippy, you can't actually get to it and clean it. Francis has a history of nipping, which

01:36is why we still haven't tried petting him yet. The last thing we want to do is overwhelm him and

01:40lose

01:41the little bit of trust that we built, but this has created a whole new set of problems, which we'll

01:46get

01:46into later. So what's funny with him is you would never guess that he's nippy if we hadn't been told.

01:52We're obviously not petting him or anything like that because apparently he just kind of likes to

01:55have his own space. So you can see we're just like sitting down letting him come to us if he

02:01wants to.

02:02But obviously we haven't had a nipping incident just yet, but for example, we're going to need to

02:07get the slip lead off him and apparently he can get a bit nippy. Okay, he seems pretty chilled out,

02:11just like exploring the garden. Looks pretty happy in himself. So we're going to go and get Mokey,

02:17our crazy resident Doberman, because she's crying inside and it sounds like she really wants to come

02:21and meet him. So let's see how it goes, hopefully smoother than when he was in the crate.

02:37He's doing appeasement looks. Yeah, he's lip licking, which is appeasement lip, so that's good.

02:43He's doing a lot of appeasement looks right now. A little shake off from Mokey because of the stress

02:50of the situation and her being behind the gate and not being able to meet him. She's excited about

02:54seeing me. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Hi, my baby. He looks curious. Hi, my girl. He looks really curious.

03:08So we're hoping that she doesn't pour him on like his matted area because it's really going to hurt,

03:13but he'll let her know. I wonder if he's matted everywhere though. Yeah, I'm not sure. Could be.

03:18Yeah, he really needs a group. Do you want to stand in the shade Mokes? Oh, sorry, mate. I've got

03:22your lead.

03:22Sorry, darling. Yeah, we want to be careful about how long we're outside for because it is so hot.

03:28We're also just going to give them a little bit of time because although he was doing appeasement licks

03:31and he's just gone off now, he didn't give a whole lot away. He was coming over to the fence

03:36and showing some positive signs. So we're going to let Mokey through a little bit, but then Ella

03:41noticed the problem. I just felt a massive, there's a massive knot. Really? On the side of his leg.

03:48Oh my goodness. The back of his bum. Yeah. You can't see, this is very graphic. You can't see,

03:55you can't see his exit. His dot. You can't see his exit. So it's time to let Mokey through.

04:02Hopefully this goes okay. Be up and ready and active in case something goes wrong.

04:07Well, I've still got his lead on him just as a form of control. Oh, that's good.

04:13He's going to hop that, get trapped. Oh. It looks like he's going to have a wander into the

04:18conservatory. Hopefully he doesn't wee in there. He can see Kobe there. First time he's kind of like

04:22in a house with Mokey. He seems all right. I think he's just noticed there's another dog here.

04:32Kobe's face. Look at him. Don't worry Kobe, we're going to bring you out soon. I just thought,

04:36how are we going to get him back over to the other side? Right, I'm going to move Francis. Don't

04:40nip my ankles. Good boy. Oh, no, no, no, no. Oh, I was so sure he was about to pee

04:46then.

04:47Well, to be honest, he seems all right. I'll just let Kobe out. Sure? Yeah. All right. Come on,

04:52Kobe, come. Come, Kobe, come. Good boy. Oh, he just realized there's another dog.

05:00Two big dogs now. Well done. Good boy, Francis. Come Mokey out. Come Mokey. Good girl.

05:08We just don't want him to feel cornered by two dogs. Kobe's being very polite in his meat. Mokey,

05:13come. Mokey, come. Good girl. Good girl. Well done. Good boy, Kobe.

05:20These are acting like they're going to play. There's no way they're going to play. It's

05:23literally 34 degrees. Did he pee on your trousers? No, Mokey dribbled on me. Oh,

05:28well, it's better than pee. Yeah. No, don't wipe on me. We're going to let Francis into the house,

05:33and it'll actually be the first time he's set foot in a house again for years. But before that,

05:38we kept noticing more and more matting, which is going to be a problem.

05:43Oh yeah, I can see you when he lifts his leg. Yeah, I could see the matted bit. Go into

05:47the house,

05:48see if he'll come in. He seems to like to follow you. Yeah. Oh, hopefully he isn't way on the

05:53laundry

05:53path. Hopefully not. Oh, straight in there. Look at him. So what's kind of sad about him is he was

05:59actually adopted. He came from Belarus. He was adopted into a home, but then surrendered two

06:06years later because apparently someone in the family was like allergic, a bit of a confusing

06:10situation, to be honest. So he lived in a home for two years and then he was surrendered back to

06:16the

06:16rescue that we got him from. So he's been in a rescue for two years. So he knows what a

06:21home is

06:21like. So to be honest, it's probably really nice for him to be back in one. The way he started

06:25acting

06:26honestly broke my heart. It's like he was just so happy to finally be back in a home again.

06:31He really likes Ella. He's rubbing, he's rubbing on the sofa. Oh yeah, nice.

06:35This is absolutely adorable because it's like he's so happy to be back in a home. I know.

06:39Because he knows exactly what a home is. It's really sad to think this dog thought he had his

06:44forever home. He was there for two years and then he was given up. So the reason he was nipping

06:49before

06:49was because he had a big surgery that was needed on his back legs. And I think he was in

06:55a lot of pain

06:56and that's why he was nipping because when people were trying to touch him, obviously it hurts. He

07:00was nipping them. He had the surgery done. His back legs are a lot better now and he's out of

07:03pain

07:03from his back legs. But I think it's just like a learned behavior from him. But me and Ella are

07:09wondering if he has got a bit of pain from the matting and that's potentially why he still nips.

07:15Because apparently if you try and put like a harness on him or anything like that, he'll nip. So

07:18even trying to take the slip bead off is going to be fun. You'll see later on,

07:22we took every precaution necessary to make sure we didn't get bit. He was getting potential adopters

07:29coming to meet him in the rescue. Obviously, you know, he's a small dog. He's absolutely adorable.

07:33So a lot of people were interested in him. People see a small dog like they're just like all over

07:37him,

07:37like smothering him. And apparently he was nippy. So I think he's had quite a few potential adopters

07:42coming to meet him. But obviously, because he's nippy, it put them off. So that's why just nobody

07:48has been able to adopt him. Also, apparently he went to another foster for one day. Obviously,

07:54I think I don't know what they tried to do with him. Obviously, the rescue would have told like

07:57the rescue have gone into so much detail about like the nipping when he nips and he went into a

08:01foster

08:01and after one day they returned him because he was nipping them. We know not to just like pet him

08:08right now.

08:08Yeah, and manhandle him and touch him and overwhelm him. Barely acknowledge him.

08:13So he's clearly quite a problematic dog with a lot of history. I then managed to pet him for the

08:18first time and things only got worse. He does seem to be like chilling around us. I'm going to put

08:24my

08:24hand out, see if he wants a little pet. That's a little tail wag. He wants pets. Oh my god,

08:29he's so mad. I'm petting him really gently. Just where I pet him, I could feel. And you can see

08:34like

08:34just like a bunch of stuff stuck in his fur. But apparently, it's really hard to get out.

08:38I mean, even his tail just looks like it needs a brush. Is that nice? I'm sorry I'm not petting

08:43you more. I just don't want to hurt you. Oh, look at him. He doesn't wag his tail or anything.

08:51doesn't give a lot of weight, does he? Oh, is that excited? Oh my god, I think he's excited.

08:56He's doing happy tippy taps. Oh, it does make me wonder if he just feels really uncomfortable from the

09:01matting and he just wants to be this like, yeah, look at him. I'm worried that if he plays with

09:07Moki, obviously she touches his matting and he gets hurt. Oh, that is adorable. There's nothing,

09:14he's all arching his back. That's absolutely adorable. He keeps rubbing on the sofa. Oh,

09:19this makes me so happy to see but also so sad to think like when he got returned to the

09:23rescue,

09:24he was just so sad he wasn't in a house. Just look at him. He looks, he literally like physically

09:31looks so happy to be back in the house. I feel really sorry for him. It seems like he was

09:36or

09:36still is in some pain and that's why he's nippy and maybe learnt some bad behaviours along the way

09:41but hey, no dog is perfect. He seems to be behaving really well so here comes the fun part trying

09:47to

09:47take his lead off and hopefully not getting nipped. So we are going to wear the bike gloves whilst getting

09:53the lead off and we're going to have some treats in hand so that we can kind of like be

09:59feeding him

09:59whilst we do this incredibly slowly. And we're also going to bring him outside without the dogs

10:05just so he doesn't get overwhelmed and just so there's a little bit more space for him as well

10:09so that he doesn't freak out. So how do you want to do it? Do you want to feed him

10:12treats whilst I

10:12try and take it off or do you want me to... What? He's walking under my legs. Um, bless you.

10:18me to try and do both? All right, so we've decided that Ella's going to feed him whilst I try

10:24and get

10:24the slip lead off. So I've got my bike gloves on. I was trying to take his lead off gently

10:30couldn't get in there. I can't see because he's got so much fur. I can't see anything. Oh my god,

10:34I don't know what to do. You're stressing. You're stressing. You're stressing. Right, um, go get some

10:38more treats. They're in the hallway. All right. Um, and then we will maybe I'll you do the feeding and

10:44I'll do the gloves because he's quite happy if I'm holding it. He wants to chew it out of my

10:47fingers. All right.

10:48Oh, that was good. Oh, well done. There you go. Guys, I promise he does actually nip.

10:56I think. Maybe he's just like, I'm in a home now. He literally didn't even care just then.

11:05now let's reunite him with the dogs. Here we go, dogs. He's brand new. Oh, they're like, we're hot,

11:10dad. We do not care. All right. We've got all of the dog's food ready. Apparently, he's really picky

11:16and wants to eat in a smaller bowl and likes it like biscuit gravy. So we've made it really

11:20nice and wet for him. Kobe and Moki are going to go outside and then we will feed him in

11:24here.

11:25All right, let's Kobe and Moki out. Should I put his food down, see what he's like?

11:28Yeah. Francis, come on, mate. Sit.

11:35Yes. Good boy. Now, I'm not sure he's going to eat because he's probably a bit stressed. I wonder if

11:40he's, he's probably still a bit stressed, to be honest, and it's really hot. He didn't eat,

11:44but rescues usually don't within the first few days of settling in. Tomorrow, we're going to call

11:49the vet to see what we can do about his matting. But first, we need to make sure he's settled

11:53for

11:53the evening. It's coming into the evening time now. Francis has been great. He hasn't nipped or

11:59anything. He did one little growl at Moki just because she was playing with her ball and kind of

12:03like jumped on him. And even then it was just like a little growl. So no nipping, which is obviously

12:08a

12:09good thing, but at the same time, not actually amazing simply because if he doesn't nip us or

12:15like at least go to nip us, we know that he has a history of it. So I'd actually almost

12:18prefer he

12:19would like go to nip us so that we can see like what scenarios he does it in. So the

12:24plan for tonight

12:25is we are, we've got a fence here. We're going to put this like diagonally across the lounge

12:29so that Kobe has his usual space there. Moki goes in a crate and then he's going to have

12:35a bed with a crate here. I'm also going to put just like a little rug or something down for

12:38him

12:38because it is really hot. The reason we're sectioning them off is, well, to be honest,

12:43just for safety, even though I'm sure he'd be completely fine. You know, they don't really

12:46know each other yet. We think he's in pain from the matting, so that could make him unpredictable.

12:51I don't know. We'd just rather play it safe. Obviously, it's his first time in a house,

12:54like sleep in a house for two years. So hopefully he just has the sleep of his life. He deserves

12:58it.

12:59That's what we've noticed. He keeps moving though, but he keeps scooting. There you go.

13:05I reckon he's doing it because he's in pain. Well, probably because it's uncomfortable.

13:11There you go. That erratic sitting and sort of like how he's moving, I think it's because he's

13:16uncomfortable. In the next video, things get serious. We call the vets. We were wondering

13:21what our options were. I mean, we were thinking potentially giving him an anesthesia and knocking

13:27him out and then shaving him. Bringing a behaviorist. Now there, he wasn't happy. And for the first time
