00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown and to all of you at home, a very happy New Year and I
00:38hope you had a wonderful festive season, not too much partying, chilling out certainly, but also of course making New
00:43Year resolutions. I know I've made mine, but I'm not going to tell you what it was.
00:49What lies ahead?
00:50Cryptic.
00:52Quite a lot, Rachel, that's what lies ahead. For one thing is absolutely certain there'll be a general election in
00:58May.
00:58The outcome, we may well have a new Prime Minister, we may not. And in September, Rachel, history could well
01:05be made because our dear Queen, Queen Elizabeth II, will then become the longest reigning monarch ever, exceeding and surpassing
01:15her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, more than 64 years on the throne.
01:20So that'll be a big, a big cheer that day for her, I'm sure. And what am I looking forward
01:24to this year? A little bit of a quieter year.
01:28Really?
01:28And how about you?
01:29You say that every year, and then you're busy every day, travelling around the country and selling bananas in the
01:34West Indies and all sorts.
01:36This year, time to settle down. What about you, a young girl like you?
01:40Well, it's my last year in my 20s this year.
01:43Yeah, so my friends, my school friends are going to start turning 30.
01:46I've got one friend that's got a baby on the way, other ones are getting married.
01:49And I'm personally looking forward to hopefully some more Champions League action, because last year was a bit of a
01:53dry spell.
01:54Well, thanks, Rachel. Now, who have you got with us today?
01:56Today, we've got Andy Noden, a retail advisor from St. Helens, returning after a good win in your first game
02:03back in December.
02:05So, you're going to kick off the new year with a good performance, I'm sure.
02:09Collects vintage toys and advertising memorabilia.
02:12Yeah.
02:12And you're joined, Andy, by Peter Wilson from Kelso in the Scottish Borders.
02:19Big cricket fan, golf fan, pretty good golfer too. Handicap of 11.
02:2311.
02:24That's not bad.
02:25Not too bad.
02:25Who's your big guy? He's got a big swing.
02:27Yeah.
02:27Yeah, all right. Let's have a big round of applause then for big Peter Wilson and Andy Noden.
02:38And over in the corner, Susie, as ever. Happy New Year, Susie.
02:43And to you, Nick, and to everybody watching.
02:45Susie's on Twitter, you know, and she is making a huge impact.
02:49You are entertaining and educating the public. It's fantastic.
02:52Well, thank you.
02:53And somebody else who educates and amuses the public is our guest today, the wonderful John Colshaw, comedian and impressionist.
03:02Well done. And thanks for coming back again.
03:04It is a pleasure. Happy New Year.
03:06There's no better place to be at the start of January than right here in my favourite corner of them
03:10all.
03:11Thank you very much. Well done, John.
03:13Now, let's get down to business. Andy, take us away.

04:32What have we got in the corner there?
04:33Yeah, further sixes.
04:34Never really got past the six barrier with this one.
04:37Intake was there.
04:38As well as tanked.
04:40Tanked, a word we're describing something that might not have done very well.
04:44It tanked.
04:45So that was there for another six.
04:47Okay.
04:48And in fact, it used to be used in boxing, didn't it?
04:50If you threw a fight, I think you tanked.
04:54I think so.
04:55Yeah, I think, you know, they tanked a lot of fights in them days, Nick, you know?
05:00It's like they're going to die.
05:01Wicked.
05:02All right.

06:28Fantastic, well done.
06:29Good man.
06:29Very, very good.
06:30Well done.

12:01A cuprite.
12:03I'll throw it to the corner.
12:06Well, if it comes from Andy, you can be pretty sure it's going to be in.
12:09It's a dark red or brownish-black mineral.
12:11Absolutely brilliant.
12:12And I think copter, short for helicopter, obviously, is fine too.
12:16Yeah, that's there.
12:17Well done.
12:17Thank you very much indeed.

14:07One away.
14:07One away, though.
14:09It's a million miles away.
14:10937?
14:11You could have said 50 multiplied by 6 is 300.
14:16Add the 4 for 304.
14:18Multiply that by 3 for 912 and add on the 25 for 937.
14:24That's the way it's done.
14:25Thank you, Rachel.
14:27Well done.
14:28So, with the score standing at Andy and 44, Peter on 30, we turn to John.
14:34John Carlshaw, one of our favourite guests.
14:36What have you got for us?
14:38The man of 350 voices.
14:41Well, yes.
14:41Bit of a back catalogue, I suppose.
14:43We were recording the Dead Ringer's Christmas specials for Radio 4 a few weeks back.
14:48And we were just reminiscing about when the show first went to the TV.
14:53And we tried out the hidden camera sketches, a sort of televised version of the prank phone calls that we
14:59do.
14:59And one of our favourite characters, of course, was Tom Baker's Doctor Who.
15:03So we decided to put on the costume, the long scarf, and just to test out whether a hidden camera
15:09sketch with Doctor Who as Tom Baker would work.
15:11We just went out into Ealing Shopping Centre and did all manner of bizarre things like standing on an escalator
15:19and calling it a galactic time portal.
15:21And wandering into wardrobes in furniture shops.
15:25And walking out of another wardrobe as though we'd crossed the dimensions and travelled through time.
15:30And going into DIY shops to tell the shopkeeper to be very careful because the sink plungers and egg whisks
15:38were actually weaponry for a Dalek.
15:41So we did all of these things and it was a real jolly morning.
15:45And we'd just finished and we thought, well, that's quite good, this could work as a sketch, we'll do this
15:49in the main series.
15:50And then I noticed there was a taxi rank.
15:53And there was a lady getting into the taxi and she was, a lot of shopping bags, she was carrying
15:58a lot of Christmas shopping kit.
16:02And we thought, well, what would the Doctor do?
16:05You know, he's an old-fashioned hero, he would go and help the lady with her shopping.
16:10So I walked up and said, my dear, my dear, I'm the Doctor, let me help you.
16:15And the lady turned round and of all people, this lady was Elizabeth Sladen, who had played Sarah Jane Smith,
16:25Tom Baker's first companion, one of the key companions in Doctor Who.
16:30Much missed Sarah Jane Smith, Elizabeth Sladen nowadays.
16:32But of all people, of all coincidences, it was her.
16:36And she turned around and saw me dressed as Doctor Who and thought, oh, good grief, some mad fan.
16:44But no, we helped her in with the taxi and said, till we meet again, Sarah.
16:49And just a beautiful coincidence.
16:57All the people.
16:58Yes, of all people.
17:00Amazing.
17:00It wasn't set up, that's how it unfolded.
17:04Extraordinary.
17:04Thank you, John.
17:05Now then, 44 to Peter's 30.

18:23Now, is this ab-react?
18:25Ab-react, yes.
18:26It sounds like some sort of chemical reaction, but it's not actually.
18:29It's from psychoanalysis.
18:31And ab-reaction is all about releasing a repressed emotion by reliving an experience.
18:37That's ab-reaction.
18:38Oh, is that right?

25:34Andy, sex.
25:36Sex, Peter, sex also.
25:38Andy, famous.
25:40Yes, Peter.
25:41Forums.
25:43Forums.
25:44Very good, yes.
25:45That's our standard plural these days.
25:47In an ancient Roman city, they talked about the fora,
25:51but today we talk about forums.
25:53Mm.
25:54Yep.
25:54Like stadiums and stadia.
25:56Yes, pretty much the same.
25:58Letting things slip again, Susie.
26:00There we are.
26:01Well done, sir.
26:0283 plays up.
26:03Peter's 51.
26:04Now then, we turn back to Susie, our language diva.
26:10What have you got for us today in your origins of words?
26:14I'm going to talk about the word toff, because it was a very old-fashioned word.
26:19In fact, still is a bit of an old-fashioned word, but it came back into fashion two or
26:23three years ago when there was a big debate about fox hunting.
26:26And also, Boris Johnson is regularly described in the press as a toff, because he uses words
26:31like cripes.
26:33So, for a while, cripes came back in.
26:36So, I was going to tell you the origin of the word toff.
26:38Toff.
26:39And it's supposed to be a varied tuft.
26:41Because at Oxford and Cambridge in the 19th century, an undergraduate who had an aristocratic
26:47title was entitled to wear not a black tassel on his mortarboard, but, like the rest of them,
26:54but a gold one, to show that he was one of the nobility and the elite.
27:00And these gentlemen, and they were, of course, always men in those days, became known as tufts.
27:05So, they were the tufts of Oxford and Cambridge.
27:07And, unsurprisingly, a lot of people who would nowadays be called social climbers, decided
27:15to gather around these tufts and see if they could sort of hang on to them and rise with
27:20them socially.
27:20And they became known as tuft hunters.
27:24And over time, tuft hunter and tuft itself sort of swallowed or garbled a little bit and
27:31became toff.
27:32And when we refer to somebody as toffy-nosed, we're looking back to these toffs as well,
27:36because they walk around with their, sort of, their nose in the air.
27:38That's the sort of idea of a tuft or a toff.
27:41And finally, I mentioned mortarboard.
27:42You can probably guess that this term looks back to a bricklayer or a mason's square board
27:47for carrying mortar.
27:49Brilliant.
27:51Wonderful.
27:55Susie Dent, you make me real.
27:57I've been a good way.
27:59Always in a good way.
28:00Now, 83 to Peter's 51.

29:23Excellent.
29:24Pithead.
29:25Very, very good.
29:26Anything else in the corner?
29:27Well, we had one of the seven that we were wondering about.
29:32Faith, we looked at for seven, but when we came to check it, sadly, faith was not allowed.
29:38The dictionary asked me if I was looking for fat head instead.
29:42In place to pithead.
29:44Yeah.
29:45All right.
29:45Anything else?
29:46Nothing.
29:46That's it.
29:47All right.

30:46Andy, six. Peter, six. Andy, llamas and smalls. Smalls? Your smalls, yes. Just check it,
30:58I'm sure it's fine. Yes, especially underwear, small items of clothing. Squeezing out one's
31:05smalls. There was rather a nifty little seven in there, actually, slaloms. Take something
31:14and pluralise it, so that was rather good. Yeah, great Norwegian word, that one. All right,
31:19smalls and slaloms. Excellent. 57 for Peter, 96 for Andy, my word. Peter, final numbers
31:28for you. There's Rachel. I'll have one large one, please, Rachel. One large five, a little.
31:34Thank you, Peter. And the final numbers game of the day is seven, five, nine, one, another
31:42one, and 75. And the target, 187. 187.
32:18Well, Peter? 188, not written down. One away. Andy? No, no. Not there? No. Peter? I did
32:28one plus one is two. One plus one, two. 75 plus the five. 75 plus five, 80. And then
32:36that 80 plus the nine. Plus the nine, 89. And multiply by two. And multiply by two for
32:42one, seven, eight. Oh, sorry, I've miscounted. Sorry. Bad luck. All our hopes and expectations
32:51lie with Rachel. 187. Is that tricky? You could have got there if you say nine plus five
32:58is 14. One plus seven is eight. Times those two together for 112. And then add on the 75
33:05for 187. There we are. Gentlemen, 187. Thank you, Rachel. So there we are. So final round
33:14then. Conundrum time. Gentlemen, fingers on buzzers. Let's reveal the first countdown conundrum

34:02thank you very much indeed for coming. Not a bad score of 57. Will you take your goodie
34:06bag back to Kelso? It was nice having you. Thanks very much. All right. Well done. Well
34:10done. We shall see you tomorrow. That's a terrific score. Thank you. And such a conundrum.

34:27tomorrow. Same time, same place. You be sure of it. A very good afternoon.
