00:47Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:49This morning, the Trump administration says Iran is not showing any interest in a deal with the United States.
00:55The 60-day negotiating window agreed to by the U.S. and Iran expired yesterday, with no deal and the
01:02two sides still far apart.
01:04President Trump's special envoy and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, one of the administration's top negotiators, says Tehran still is
01:12not ready to make a deal.
01:14Right now, they're not showing any interest in doing something that makes sense for us.
01:20I think if they're going to try to play a trick or do something to hide certain cards and get
01:25certain concessions for not, President Trump wants to make a fair deal.
01:28That could be a win-win.
01:28But that has to be very basic in that, you know, they have to want to be a real country,
01:34which is no nuclear weapons and no funding terror in the region.
01:37Meanwhile, Iran says it has reached an understanding with Oman on a plan for ships to transit the Strait of
01:44Hormuz.
01:44And the two countries are now working to finalize the details.
01:48Reopening the Strait has been a key U.S. demand.
01:51And Trump is now threatening Oman, a U.S. ally, if it, quote, gets in the way.
01:56Trump told Fox News the U.S. would bomb them, though with a bit more colorful language.
02:01And there's also a split between Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance over how they describe the administration's top
02:08priority.
02:09Vance said last week it was keeping oil and gas prices down for Americans.
02:13Trump said yesterday the, quote, number one goal is and always will be preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
02:22Look, we're in there for one reason.
02:24Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
02:27You understand that?
02:28Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
02:30And they won't have a nuclear weapon.
02:32And right now, them building one after what we did previously with the B-2 bombers, going to be a
02:39long time to be half.
02:40But Iran cannot have, it's very simple, they can't have a nuclear weapon.
02:44Now to a different topic.
02:46A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration's plan to move FBI headquarters to the Ronald Reagan building in Washington,
02:53D.C.
02:54It is the latest turn in a years-long fight over where to put the bureau's new central location.
02:59In 2023, the Biden administration chose Greenbelt, Maryland, after a long-running site selection process.
03:06But last year, the Trump administration scrapped that plan and chose the Reagan building in downtown Washington instead.
03:13President Trump had previously criticized the Greenbelt location, calling Maryland a liberal state.
03:19Now a federal judge says the administration did not have the legal authority to make that switch,
03:24ruling that Congress had required the government to choose from three specific sites, including Greenbelt.
03:30Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown called the ruling a victory for the state and for congressional authority.
03:37Quote,
03:38It is about ensuring that when Congress makes a decision, the federal government cannot simply ignore it because they do
03:44not like the outcome.
03:45The FBI is pushing back, saying the judge, quote,
03:49impermissibly intervened for political reasons.
03:52The administration has not yet said whether it will appeal.
03:55To a different case we go.
03:57The Justice Department is now trying to revive its human smuggling case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
04:04And the fight now centers on why prosecutors brought the case in the first place.
04:09Abrego Garcia is the Salvadoran man the Trump administration wrongfully deported last year before he was returned to the U
04:16.S.
04:17Prosecutors later charged him with two human smuggling counts stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee.
04:23He has pleaded not guilty.
04:25But in May, a federal judge dismissed the case, finding that Abrego Garcia had shown the prosecution was vindictive.
04:33Now the Justice Department is asking the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals to reinstate the charges.
04:39In a filing Monday, DOJ argues prosecutors brought the case because the evidence supported it,
04:45and says the judge went too far in questioning their motives.
04:49Abrego Garcia's lawyers called that argument flat wrong.
04:52They say the case was retaliation for his successful fight against his deportation.
04:57For now, the charges remain dismissed.
05:00His lawyers will respond before the appeals court decides whether to revive the case.
05:05In New York, Luigi Mangione's state murder trial will not begin next month after all.
05:11And now a judge will decide whether that case can go forward at all.
05:15The trial had been set to begin September 8th, but the judge has now taken it off the calendar
05:20as Mangione's lawyers tried to get the state charges thrown out.
05:25Their argument?
05:26Mangione has already pleaded guilty in federal court to conduct tied to the same killing,
05:31and prosecuting him again would violate New York's double jeopardy law.
05:35Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking charges,
05:39and for the first time admitted in court that he killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
05:44He told the judge,
05:46I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died.
05:49I knew what I was doing was illegal.
05:52The gunman shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December of 2024.
05:56Surveillance cameras captured the shooting.
05:58Mangione still faces second-degree murder and weapons charges in the state case,
06:03and Manhattan prosecutors say they will fight to keep that case alive.
06:07They now have until October 9th to respond to the defense.
06:11The next state court hearing is set for December 10th,
06:14eight days before Mangione is sentenced in the federal case,
06:17where prosecutors say they will seek life in prison.
06:20People in Hawaii are waking up this morning to damage left behind by Hurricane Lala.
06:26Homes damaged, roads and bridges washed out, and thousands still without power.
06:31The storm never made landfall, but it came close enough to hammer parts of the Big Island
06:36with hurricane-force winds and torrential rain.
06:39Wicked winds and high seas washed away or damaged about 100 homes.
06:43Some communities were cut off after floodwaters took out roads and bridges.
06:48And take a look at this.
06:49Two paramedics had to be rescued after their truck became trapped in rushing waters.
06:55Wow.
06:55The National Guard sent in a high-water vehicle to get them out safely.
06:59The rainfall totals are staggering.
07:02More than 40 inches in at least one part of the Big Island,
07:05turning rivers into raging torrents that spilled over their banks.

07:11The winds were strong enough to topple trees and power lines,
07:14leaving some residents just now getting their first look at what's left behind.
07:19We haven't had electricity all night, so I just wanted to get out here and kind of assess for myself
07:25what's going on.
07:27It's been a pretty challenging experience just trying to, all these trees are down with, on top of wires.
07:34So we're just hoping emergency crews get to us and help us out a little bit.
07:40Restoring power could take days.
07:42And in some of the hardest-hit parts of the Big Island, officials warn it could be weeks.
07:47Lala has now moved west of Hawaii.
07:49But for people on the islands, the cleanup is just beginning.
07:52Finally this morning, it's back to school time for millions of kids.
07:57And new CDC data shows exemptions from routine childhood vaccines have hit an all-time high.
08:04The rate of kindergartners with at least one vaccine exemption reached 4.2 percent during the 2025-26 school year,
08:12nearly double the 2.2 percent rate five years ago.
08:16And the vast majority of those exemptions were for non-medical reasons.
08:21Measles vaccination also continues to slip from 95 percent before the pandemic to 92.4 percent now.
08:29That's below the level doctors say is needed to maintain herd immunity
08:33and comes during the worst year for measles cases in the U.S. since 1991.
08:39Vaccination rates also fell slightly for polio, DTaP, and the first dose of the chickenpox vaccine.
08:46Dr. David Margolius, director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health, calls the trend concerning.
08:52But it's not clear how much of the increase is from parents who oppose routine vaccines
08:57and how much is from families facing other barriers to getting children their vaccinations.
