This rare Ford Transit Trail Base Camper blends a factory lift, rugged exterior details, and a clean walnut-trimmed interior into a serious off-grid camping build. Ben from Ready Set Van and Patrick Botticelli tour the layout, showing why the open floor plan has made the Basecamper their most popular model for van life and adventure travel.

Instead of a fixed bathroom or bulky shower box, the design prioritizes living space, flexible seating, and practical storage. The Transit Trail setup includes bed-lined flare pop-outs for extra sleeping room, a 6.5-foot bed, Arctic Tern windows, a Fiamma awning, KC lights, and a Flatline Van Co roof rack. Inside, the van features a swivel passenger seat, induction cooktop, 80L fridge, hidden storage, pantry space, a toilet compartment, and a waterproof vinyl floor.

The off-grid electrical system is a major highlight, with a 600Ah battery bank, 3,000W inverter, 200W of solar, a dedicated second alternator, and triple DC-DC chargers. Add in the Houghton AC unit, Maxx Fan, Webasto heat, outdoor shower, and plenty of 110V, 12V, and USB power, and this Transit camper van is built for extended RV life, festival weekends, and remote travel.

Ideal for fans of Ford Transit camper van tours, off-grid van builds, DIY RV layouts, and adventure van conversions. If you search for Transit Trail build, Base Camper, van life storage ideas, or serious off-grid electrical setups, this tour delivers a detailed look at a practical, spacious, and highly capable camper van.

00:00This is Patrick with New Jersey's Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel.
00:03Back here at Ready, Set, Van in Trenton, New Jersey.
00:06Today Ben is going to give us a tour of this Ford Transit Trail Base Camper model.
00:11This thing is really cool inside and out, so join us.
00:15Hey Patrick, thanks for coming. I'm really excited to show you this Base Camper.
00:18The Base Camper is actually the first model we ever developed here at Ready, Set, Van.
00:21And it's actually the current model that I have for my van.
00:23But when we started we did them all on the Promaster and this is a Ford Transit.
00:28This happens to be a Transit Trail, which is a particularly rare version of the chassis.
00:32But, and we adapted it for the Transit and it's pretty awesome.
00:36I'm very, very pleased with it.
00:38This whole, the customer added a whole bunch of nice details.
00:41Put some KC lights up top, which are going to provide a ton of light.
00:45All the light exterior lighting is hooked up to controls in the driver cab area.
00:50We got some scene lights on this side.
00:52There are scene lights on the other side as well.
00:54Right along the side here we actually bedlined the whole side.
00:56So, including the bump out pod here.
00:59We got the flare and this area.
01:01This is the customer's request.
01:03And honestly, I love it.
01:04I think it's really great.
01:05We're going to start doing this for a lot of our clients.
01:07What's nice about this is these, these little flares, these pop outs.
01:11They stick out a little bit.
01:12They give you more room in your bed.
01:14But they also tend to catch branches and things like that.
01:16So, it's nice to give them an extra, extra protection.
01:19And then, of course, we have two arctic turn windows here.
01:23These both awning out.
01:24I'll show you them on the inside, but they're really wonderful, wonderful lights.
01:27This van happened to come with a nice set of running boards here from the factory.
01:30They're really super.
01:32And, of course, we got our drain over there.
01:34And this is the outlet for our Webasto, which is our heating system.
01:37Up top, we've got this really nice roof rack up here by Flatland Vanco.
01:41It's awesome.
01:42It's got decking and everything.
01:43It's sweet.
01:44And, of course, on the back of it here, we've got some exterior lights clamped to it.
01:48So, again, those are hooked up to the lighting controls that are inside.
01:52Looking inside the back of the garage here, we've got a nice big area of storage here
02:00for all kinds of things, bikes, you name it.
02:02Plenty of room in here.
02:05On this side here, we've got our plumbing system, which has about 25 gallons of water in there.
02:09We've got a four-gallon water heater.
02:11We've got an outdoor shower here, which is great for rinsing off.
02:14And this is our water fill here, a light switch for our garage lights.
02:19And over on this side over here, we've got our whole electrical system.
02:23So, it's a 3,000-watt inverter, which is powered by 200 watts of solar on the roof.
02:27Also, alternator charging.
02:28He has lots of alternator charging.
02:29He has a dedicated second alternator onboard that's powered through three 50-amp DC-DC chargers.
02:36So, lots and lots of power, and then 600-amp hours of battery with a little room to expand
02:41if you ever wanted to do that.
02:42So, pretty, pretty fantastic electrical setup.
02:45Of course, we also have 110-volt AC here, 12-volt if you need that for, like, inflatables or anything,
02:50USB, you name it, all that stuff.
02:53And, yeah, let's come around the side here.
02:56And, of course, we've got a Fiamma awning up top that's mounted up to the roof rack.
03:01You know, another pad on this side that's bedlined.
03:04And another set of lights up top for scene lighting all the way around.
03:09Coming in inside here, we've got 110-volt outlet right here by the entrance, which is nice.
03:14And our floor is a waterproof vinyl floor.
03:16It's one big sheet all the way through, which is really nice.
03:19Of course, there's insulation underneath, and then the van is thoroughly insulated throughout.
03:24In the front here, the passenger seat swivels around.
03:27He could also put a swivel on the driver's seat, but he chose just to swivel the passenger seat,
03:31which is, you know, which is common request.
03:34We've got a mount here for a lagoon table.
03:37And then up under here, these are the lighting controls for all the lights,
03:41the exterior lights that we were looking at.
03:43Over here in the kitchen in the base camper, he chose to go with a walnut interior.
03:48So this is a walnut butcher block countertop.
03:50It's absolutely gorgeous.
03:52And it has a grain-matched cutting board in it, a nice 50 by 15 sink,
03:59and also an induction cooktop right here.
04:02So the induction cooktop is awesome.
04:05Huge fans of that.
04:06And right above that here, of course, we have the window that we saw on the outside.
04:10This awning's out.
04:11It also has a bug screen here and a shade.
04:14And in my personal van, I have to say, I love this little spot here in the window.
04:18It makes for a great little shelf.
04:20I have little, well, they're fake plants, but I put little plants there and other little things,
04:24which, you know, is a nice little touch.
04:27Of course, we have a 80 liter fridge here, which is awesome.
04:32One thing that's really nice is we make this little kind of hidden storage compartment down here
04:37that most people have never seen.
04:39It's kind of a nice place to, I don't know, put some, put some things.
04:42I've got a nice big drawer in the top here and then a really nice pantry here for any,
04:49any foodstuffs you got.
04:51And then, of course, we have another storage here under the sink.
04:55And then I want to go up top here to the overhead.
04:58So in the transit, because the transit has this irregular shape in the front of the transit,
05:03and we have this one big open cabinet here, which is nice.
05:07You know, you could put, you know, blankets and things like that in here.
05:10And then down here, we've got a microwave.
05:13It's all tucked away, hidden away, which is, which is nice.
05:16And then, you know, more, more overheads that go, that go the length for clothing and things like that.
05:22You know, again, we've got walnut, just grain matched all the way through.
05:25That's just what we do here.
05:27And that just goes with our overall aesthetic, which is just this very clean interior, very much
05:33reminiscent of like what you would have in your home.
05:35It's just a nice clean white walls.
05:38These are all half inch lightweight ply with two or three layers of thin insulation behind them.
05:44So over here, we've got the passenger bench seat.
05:49So one of the nice things about the passenger bench seat is, you know, you can sit here
05:54and have this table, which is really nice.
05:56But you can also flip this around and sit here, which is like delightful as far as I'm concerned.
06:05This with the slider door open is just, is just wonderful.
06:09That's how I use mine all the time in my van.
06:12And then under this, under this cushion here, we've got a toilet compartment.
06:17So we can put just about any toilet.
06:19He chose to go with the Trilino here, but really just about any toilet will work great there.
06:24And next door here, we've just got another storage compartment.
06:29So, you know, all kinds of things can go in there.
06:34And over on this side, there's more storage under this bench seat,
06:37similar as over here.
06:38And all of our controls are over here.
06:40So we've got 110 volt outlet here, 12 volt things.
06:44We've got a light dimmer here.
06:46This is a light switch for, this actually manages the electronic automatic locking system
06:52we have here.
06:52So all the drawers lock automatically.
06:54This disables that if you want to turn that off for any reason.
06:56And then this is a switch for our water heater.
06:59So, um, this is a mount for a, um, an iPad.
07:05So they're thinking of maybe using an iPad here instead of having like a big kind of ugly TV.
07:10This will be a nice solution for, for that over here in the bed area.
07:15Uh, we've, you can see we've got the big bump outs here, uh, which really extend the bed.
07:20So this bed ends up being about six and a half feet long, which is nice.
07:25It's got a lot of nice length.
07:26It's a little narrower than a full size mattress by about two or three inches.
07:30Um, but nice big bed.
07:32Uh, they also chose to go with a 12 volt fan in the back there, which is a very popular
07:37choice.
07:37And I think a good idea.
07:39And then up at the head of the bed here, uh, we've got 12 volt, uh, sorry, we've got, um,
07:43USB charging on both sides.
07:45So you can plug in all your devices and all of that.
07:47And then up top, right above me, we've got our AC unit.
07:51This is a Hoffton unit.
07:52Uh, it's awesome.
07:53It just pumps out tons and tons of cold.
07:55And then of course we trim out the whole, uh, rear pillar.
07:59Um, and it's just really nice fabric wrapped, um, finish.
08:02So it just kind of gives it a nice, nice finish.
08:04Uh, and then above me here, we have the max fan,
08:06which of course is like the essential thing of van life.
08:09It kind of defines van life.
08:12And then lastly, uh, there's a pass through access here.
08:14So this is just a removable door.
08:15Um, uh, there are different options for this,
08:18but this is just a removable door to get, uh, access into the garage.
08:21So yeah, that's our base camper.
08:23This is the base camper on a transit.
08:25Um, and it's, it's been pretty fantastic.
08:27I'm really glad you've been able, able to come.
08:29I think one of our first tours that we did was a base camper
08:32around pro master.
08:33Everybody loved that.
08:34This is a very efficient floor plan and design because it's wide open inside.
08:40Not everybody needs a bathroom or shower box inside their van, right?
08:44And not everybody needs a fixed dinette.
08:46This is pretty nice that the table slides in and out from underneath the bed.
08:50So if you're out like at festivals and hanging out in the van,
08:53you can have a group of people in here.
08:54I think you could probably sit four or five people in there and still not feel claustrophobic.
08:59Yeah, it's, it's an awesome layout for, for hanging out.
09:02It's very spacious.
09:02It's just nice, big open design.
09:04And it's basically like if you don't need that fixed full-time shower,
09:07this layout really is just fantastic.
09:09Yeah, you can shower outside, right?
09:11Absolutely.
09:12Easy as that.
09:13Well, I'll put a link in the description so our viewers can click over to your website
09:16so they can check out the build process for one, pricing, and also to your YouTube channel.
09:22Because you guys do a lot of great YouTube demonstration videos of your products
09:26and some of the accessories you use inside the van.
09:28Sure.
09:29This is Patrick with New Jersey's Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel.
09:32See you next time.
