As the death toll in the PG building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan rises to seven, India Today visited other student accommodations in the same neighbourhood. The ground reality check was concerning. One of the buildings housing a PG, similar to the one that collapsed, was found to have no emergency fire exit and only a single staircase. The visibly dilapidated building also had a tangled web of wires and electricity meters on the ground floor, raising further concerns about safety. A young man said single beds in PG accommodations in the area start at Rs 15,000. Despite the steep rents, he claimed that many PGs lack basic facilities, with even meals being treated as an “extra facility” and not included in the rent.
