Zac Taylor on Injuries, Bengals Captains and More Ahead of Matchup vs Buccaneers
Transcript
00:00We'll wait to release injury reports on Wednesday,
00:01but I was encouraged by the progress all three of those guys have made.
00:05You guys named Captain today.
00:06What went through the process to go out and pick the guys that were disliked for that?
00:11Yeah, the players vote on them, and I think it's a good group.
00:14I think this year, probably more so than any year, a lot of guys received votes.
00:19A lot of guys received a healthy amount of votes.
00:22The seven guys were the clear seven,
00:24but I think it's a really good group on offense, defense,
00:28and then Evan as the specialist.
00:29He's a great camp.
00:31And so I think prepare for those guys to lead us.
00:34There's a lot of other guys that I'm going to call on to lead us as well.
00:37That doesn't change anything, whether they're a captain or not.
00:39I think we have a really strong collection of guys on the team
00:42that can really help push us the way we want to go.
00:46How important is that, Zach, when you and Duke were constructing the roster?
00:50Obviously, you need the talent, you need the skill next week,
00:53but that next level of leadership, of maturity, all of that.
00:57Yeah, I think it factors in at every position.
00:59When you've got a real veteran who can lead by example,
01:02is willing to help younger players with things that the coach
01:08isn't always going to be able to help you with.
01:10There's times where they're focused on another position,
01:12and you've got a veteran at the spot that can grab a young guy
01:15and help lead them and help point some things out.
01:17I think it's critical.
01:18When we really have that at every position on our team,
01:20that's really good for us and the coaching staff to be able to have other guys
01:23that can be coaches on the field
01:24and help get the most out of everybody we've got on the roster.
01:27Did you see numerous examples of that throughout camp?
01:29I did.
01:30Yeah, I did.
01:31Absolutely.
01:32I saw it a lot with the defensive line.
01:33I saw it with every position.
01:34I think those are the ones that really stand out.
01:38But I really think from top to bottom,
01:41we've just got a really good group of guys that want the most out of everybody
01:44because they know that's what's going to give us the best chance to win.
01:46From a pure football perspective,
01:48how did you see Despert kind of change the defense as you guys saw it?
01:52You just have to give so much attention to him.
01:54We dealt with it all through training camp.
01:56When we're really going against our defense, then you just can't –
02:01I don't want to get too much into it,
02:02but he just affects about every play he got.
02:06And it gives other people a great opportunity for one-on-ones
02:08that they've got to take advantage of, and they have.
02:10And so it just really opens up the other ten guys on defense
02:15and then finding ways to get him isolated as well,
02:18and not just making him eat up double teams all day.
02:21Like, you can get him one-on-one,
02:23then it puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback and the offense in general.
02:25And something the coordinator's got to focus on the whole game is where is he?
02:29Is he in? Is he out?
02:30Who else is in the game?
02:31So I just think it gives us a lot of opportunity to have success in defense.
02:35It seems like every team has a real guy on the D-line,
02:38but how many must-doubles are there in the league?
02:40Like, guys that have to be doubled.
02:42Oh, you're putting me on – you should text me that and let me think about it.
02:46I mean, interior-wise, off the top of my head, somewhere between 5 and 10,
02:51you know, where you go into the game
02:54and you're really focused on the interior D-linemen.
02:56You know, I think you probably need a higher number on the edge,
02:58but inside it's a problem because the pocket gets pushed.
03:02And so now you have to change a little bit of your protection plan on play actions
03:06and third down and things that give you a little more help inside.
03:10Is Vita Veo one of them, and how do you approach that?
03:13Yeah, he's a great player.
03:14He's got our full attention.
03:15He's been a tremendous player for a long time.
03:18So I think for our guys inside, going against Dexter Allcamp
03:21and Jonathan Allen, all the guys we got in there has helped you.
03:25They're all a little bit unique in their own ways,
03:27but he's a tremendous player who's got our full respect.
03:31We asked you so much about Dexter and the pass rush guys,
03:36but what exactly does Brian Cook give you?
03:39He's a great player.
03:39He's a great player.
