00:02At Gymea Technology High School on Sydney's southern outskirts, Year 10 students are taking
00:08part in a practical engineering class.
00:12Last year, there were among hundreds of thousands of peers around the world to sit the PISA tests
00:17in science, maths, English and digital literacy.
00:21This was more simply a test of just, I guess, pure logic and reasoning and your ability
00:27to think.
00:27The school is celebrating its strong performance in digital literacy.
00:32It is an area that our students, as they're moving into the workforce, need more and more.
00:37However elsewhere, the report paints a gloomy picture.
00:40In both reading and mathematics, Australian students receive the lowest scores on record.
00:45In maths, scores have fallen from 524 points to 478 points in 2025.
00:51That equates to more than two years of lost learning.
00:54What PISA shows is that we see a decline in especially reading and mathematics, where we
01:00haven't caught up with the levels from 10 or 20 years ago.
01:04However, with scores falling faster in other countries, Australian students still rank 10th
01:09in science and reading and 16th in mathematics.
01:12While we see some declines in the long run, we're still a very strong country.
01:17So Australia still performs above the OECD average in reading, math and science.
01:22The results showed classroom behaviour and discipline is a big problem here in Australia, with students
01:27here twice as likely as their international peers to have skipped school.
01:30They were also more likely to be distracted by misbehaviour.
01:33They were also more likely to be distracted by misbehaviour.
01:33above all they cannot carry out life.
01:34Now stir and
01:35now join within LTNT is a very important consideration of course.
