President Donald Trump made a striking claim about the ongoing conflict with Iran during his keynote speech at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, saying the United States is gaining the upper hand and controls the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump declared, “Now, we'll win it. We're winning it.” He then claimed, “We control the Hormuz Strait.”
Turning the moment into a personal proposal, Trump suggested the strategically important waterway could be renamed after him. “I should get something out of it — the Trump Strait,” he said.
Trump acknowledged that Iranian leaders were unlikely to welcome the idea, adding, “I'm sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that. I'd like to tell you it was their idea. It was not their idea. I don't think they're too happy about it.”
He continued by criticizing Iran’s leadership, saying, “I don't think they're too happy about anything.”
Trump then delivered a broader assessment of the country, stating, “Their country is falling apart.” He added, “They've been the bully of the Middle East for 51 years, and they're not the bully anymore.”
His comments came as he rallied Republican supporters ahead of the midterm elections.
