00:00Sonic, come back. To me. To us.
00:13Welcome to Mojo Place, and today we're looking at characters from across the games and wider Sonic Universe who have
00:19irritated, disappointed and infuriated fans.
00:22Keep in mind, we're also including those whose reputations have improved over time, but at release, we're outright reviled.
00:32Did you really think you could defeat me?
00:36Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to

00:45Chip.
00:46Mmm-mmm. Wow, this chip whatever stuff is great. If you say so.
00:53When Sonic Unleashed introduced this little flying amnesiac, his high-pitched voice, endless enthusiasm and obsession with food immediately set
01:00off every annoying mascot companion alarm imaginable.
01:04While Sonic was dealing with Eggman literally cracking the planet apart, Chip was frequently more interested in whatever local delicacy
01:11happened to be nearby.
01:16Thankfully, the revelation that Chip is actually like Gaia gave his character a considerable boost, but by that time, we
01:22were already deep in the endgame.
01:24Early game Chip, on the other hand, can be exhausting. We don't need another comedy sidekick. That's what we have
01:31Knuckles for.
01:32Mr. Hey, mister. Hey, don't cry. Uh, ice cream.
01:38Big the Cat.
01:48There was a time when this purple feline was practically the poster child for everything critics disliked about Sonic's expanding
01:55cast.
01:56The problem wasn't necessarily Big himself. He's an innocent, laid-back guy who wants to hang out with his best
02:01friend Froggy.
02:02The problem was fishing.
02:12Sonic Adventure forced players to abandon high-speed platforming and slowly catch fish across Big's campaign.
02:18The mechanics, paired with Big's particular... cadence, made him public enemy number one for the longest time.
02:25Modern appearances have leaned into his wholesome stupidity, transforming him into a walking meme who now casually vibes through Sonic's
02:32catalogue.
02:33Hey, maybe we could use this. But I don't know the first thing about it. Oh well, I'll give it
02:42a try anyway.
02:43Charmy B.
02:49That was very scary.
02:51Every friend group has one member who seemingly consumes six energy drinks before everybody else wakes up.
02:57For Team Chaotic, that's Charmy.
03:00Get served!
03:00He's young, excitable, endlessly enthusiastic, and frequently capable of making Vector question every decision that led him into detective work.
03:09While his flying ability makes him useful in Sonic Heroes, his constant shouting and childlike dialogue made him especially grating
03:16for players who already thought Sonic had way too many comic relief companions.
03:20Yeah, sure made fools out of ourselves.
03:24Nothing new for you Vector!
03:26His appearances in the comics have fleshed him out considerably.
03:29But as far as mainstream gaming is concerned, don't be shocked if you feel the urge to reach for the
03:34mute button.
03:35You makes it all better! Yeah!
03:38Lyric.
03:39A thousand years later and you're still predictable.
03:43What's he talking about?
03:45He dodged my spin attack? Nobody's ever done that before.
03:52Rise my warriors. We have a world to destroy.
03:57Being forgettable might be worse than being terrible.
04:01Lyric the Last Ancient is a giant cybernetic snake, awakened after a thousand years, possessing an army of robots and
04:07a deep hatred for organic life.
04:09Sounds promising.
04:11Unfortunately, he's trapped inside Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric.
04:15Where's my invention?
04:17Thanks to Sonic, metal scrap now, another worthless creation.
04:23Worthless, eh? What's this?
04:25Lyric spends an annoying amount of time delivering generic villain exposition about destroying biological life, yet somehow possesses less charisma
04:33than Eggman on his worst day.
04:36Lyric was supposed to establish a major new threat for the Boom universe.
04:39Instead, he largely disappeared when the animated series wisely focused elsewhere.
04:45When your franchise introduces a giant robot snake and the fans respond with,
04:49Who? Something has gone awry.
04:51Did you really think you could defeat me?
04:56Infinite
04:57Well, we'll cruise back from the dead. The little blue saviour. But what's that I smell? You reek of fear.
05:07Infinite might just be the greatest wasted opportunity in Sonic villain history. The look is on point, his theme absolutely
05:15slaps, and Sonic Forces initially presents him as a mysterious powerhouse capable of defeating Sonic.
05:21Then we learn his motivation. Shadow beats his ass, gets called weak, and it's this humiliation that sends him flying
05:28off the deep end right into his villain arc.
05:31That's essentially it.
05:33Impossible. And I cannot be defeated.
05:36His backstory became instant meme material, while Forces never sufficiently explores his personality, relationship with Eggman, or the extraordinary possibilities
05:45created by his powers.
05:47Sega could have knocked it out of the park day one, and instead gave us the edgiest of edge boys,
05:53but with none of the fun. Sorry Buckaroo, you ain't Shadow.
05:57No. Wait. I can still fight.
06:04Gotta go fast to get away from all these terrible Sonic villains? Scan the QR code on screen and Chaos
06:10Control over to Mojo Play's 24 hour livestream. See you there.
06:14I don't know anything about you. Not even your name.
06:17The Chaos Council.
06:25Doctor Eggman is one of gaming's greatest villains. So surely five Eggmans equals five times the insidious Glee.
06:33Sonic Prime tested that theory with the Chaos Council. Five fragmented counterparts of Eggman ruling New York City.
06:40Mr. Dr. Eggman, Dr. Dunnit, Dr. Deep, Dr. Don't, and Dr. Babble.
06:45Alas, quantity doesn't equal quality.
06:50The Council's constant bickering and exaggerated gimmicks can quickly grate on your last nerve, particularly when compared to the genuine
06:57menace and charisma of the original Doctor.
06:59It's yet another multiversal villain squad. One that makes us long for the simple days when Sonic only had to
07:05deal with one ridiculous mustache.
07:08The energy field is supercharging our systems! Turns out the blue possum has some juice after all!
07:17Omachow.
07:18Hi, I'm Sommo Jet. I'm here to help you.
07:22Press the jump button to jump!
07:24Thanks, Omachow. What would we have done without you?
07:27Omachow exists primarily to provide tutorials, appearing throughout Sonic Adventure 2 and later games to explain controls, objectives, and information
07:35that players were already aware of.
07:37He's loud, he's repetitive, he's everywhere.
07:41So much so that players soon found the most entertaining way of unplugging his motor mouth, picking him up, and
07:47yeeting him as far as possible across the arena.
07:49Thank you for holding me, but you were kinda rough.
07:55Later appearances became more self-aware, transforming the little robot into something of an affectionate punchline.
08:01But during the Dreamcast era, few sounds inspired more immediate irritation than hearing that tiny voice blast out while you
08:08were trying to focus on spin dashing.
08:16Chris Thorndike.
08:18My name's Christopher. Do you have a name?
08:22Yeah, I have a name.
08:24Sonic X, the official Sonic anime, features Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Shadow, Eggman, and a stacked cast of other
08:31favorites.
08:31Naturally, the series dedicated huge portions of its runtime to Chris bloody Thorndike.
08:39This NPC becomes Sonic's human best friend after the blue blur arrives on Earth, and it didn't take long before
08:45he became the show's biggest attraction.
08:47Oh, please don't run away!
08:50Sorry kid, but crickets don't do it for me.
08:53Self-inserting himself into Sonic canon was bad enough, but it was his emotional dependence on Sonic that really made
08:59him insufferable.
09:00Honestly, it was downright creepy.
09:03He even prevented Sonic from returning to his home planet in the finale because he couldn't face life without his
09:09favorite hedgehog.
09:10Yikes.
09:25Princess Elise.
09:26It's so beautiful. I've never seen so many flowers before.
09:32Look, even without that scene, Elise was already a letdown of a character.
09:37She's repeatedly kidnapped throughout Sonic 06 and spends most of the game being told she must suppress her emotions to
09:43prevent Iblis from escaping.
09:44Then Sega decided Sonic needed a romantic subplot with a realistically proportioned human princess.
09:51Their relationship is awkward all throughout the game, but nothing compares to the climax where Elise kisses Sonic's dead body.
10:04It became one of the most relentlessly mocked moments in the franchise's history.
10:09There are interesting ideas buried inside Elise.
10:12A traumatized ruler forced to suppress grief from childhood could be genuinely compelling.
10:18Too bad the writing was just as awful as the rest of Sonic 06's gameplay.
10:21Sonic, if you leave here to go on another adventure, remember this place.
10:29Definitely.
10:32If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.

10:44girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
10:46Boom.
10:47I can make an apology video.
10:49Oh, you so would.

10:56The Deadly Six
10:58Friends?
10:59These are nobody's friends.
11:02They are the Deadly Six, and they are your worst enemies.
11:06Taking our top spot isn't one irritating Sonic character.
11:09It's six for the price of one.
11:11The Deadly Six consists of Zavok, Zaz, Xena, Zor, Zomom, and Master Zik.
11:17Each member essentially constructed around one exaggerated personality trait.
11:22Zomom likes food, Xena is vain, Zor is miserable, Zaz is crazy, Master Zik is old, and Zavok is big
11:29and evil.
11:30Well, that was so easy I almost feel guilty.
11:35Compared with villains like Eggman, Chaos, Metal Sonic, or even Infinite,
11:38they frequently feel more like rejected Saturday morning cartoon antagonists than serious additions to Sonic's rogues gallery.
11:45What really irritated fans was their persistence.
11:49Zavok kept returning long after Lost World despite limited enthusiasm for the group.
11:54There's nothing wrong with colourful villains, but six characters shouldn't somehow produce less personality than one Eggman.
12:01I'll never serve you.
12:03I was hoping you'd say that.
12:06Destroy Sonic.
12:09Do you agree with our picks?
12:11Which Sonic character do you think gets way more hate than they deserve?
