25:24Because there is one believe it or not with the peregrine falcon
25:27If we look back to the origin of the word pilgrim
25:30It was somebody who always was going on a journey
25:33It goes back ultimately to the latin peregrinus which meant foreign
25:36Per meaning through and then agar meaning field
25:39So it was somebody who trekked and traveled across fields to get to their destination
25:44It's the source obviously of agriculture that agar
25:47When peregrine arrived in English it was still being used for a traveler
25:53So peregrinus gave us peregrine and we took it on as I say a word for traveler
25:58And that still survives really because we have peregrinations
26:02Which is a bit of a posh word for traveling
26:04But thanks to the French influence peregrine became pellegrine and then eventually pilgrim
26:09And it was specifically somebody who went on a journey for religious purposes
26:12But peregrine wasn't forgotten because the peregrine falcon gets its name
26:17Because falconers get their birds when they are fully grown on migration
26:22Rather than taking them from the nest
26:23So the idea is that they are journeying when they are captured for falconry
26:27But the pilgrims have actually given us quite a few terms in English
26:31Those setting off to visit the shrine of Thomas Beckett
26:34Would lodge at inns or hospices
26:36And this action or activity of theirs gave us our first record of the term hospital
26:41That was best recorded in English at the end of the 14th century
26:44But pilgrims made their journeys to Beckett's shrine
26:47Exchanging gossip and stories as we know from Chaucer's tales
26:50And they wanted a very very leisurely state on their horses
26:54And they were known to carry out on their horses what was known as a canterbury trot
26:59A very leisurely state of affairs
27:01Trotting along on their horses exchanging this gossip
27:03Of course a canterbury trot
27:05Eventually was shortened over time and it gave us our verb to canter
