00:00And they certainly are not rebuilding under Trevor Lawrence.
00:03Lawrence will continue to evolve this year for the Jags for them to be successful.
00:07Meanwhile, the Browns, they turn things over to 60-year-old Todd Munkin,
00:11his first NFL head coaching job, and he gives the reins to Deshaun Watson.
00:18Hey, everybody. Hi, Tom McCarthy along with Robert Turbin.
00:21We'll hear from Tiffany Blackman and Gene Steratore in just a little bit.
00:23Super Bowl champion Robert Turbin with CBS.
00:27What is this like, Game 1, for the players?
00:30Well, there's not many things that can compare to what Game 1 is like.
00:34The roar that you hear from your fans and the boos that you get from being on the road,
00:38it never gets old.
00:40But I can tell you this, the hard work that you put out during the offseason behind closed doors,
00:46that's what you want on display in the first game today.
00:48One guy that certainly put in a lot of hard work is Trevor Lawrence.
00:51Had an outstanding year last year for the Jags.
00:53No doubt about it.
00:54And the next step for him, Tom, is the leadership, the full autonomy of this offense.
00:59Last year, he was very lenient on his coaches.
01:02This year, he'll be in more control.
01:04So look for more audibles and checks at the line of scrimmage from Trevor Lawrence.
01:08They certainly finished strong in the regular season.
01:10They won their last eight games.
01:12Their points per game went up.
01:13They became a past-first offense in the last eight games and even into the postseason.
01:18But they will have to replace a 1,000-yard rusher.
01:22And they're going to have to do it by committee with Bashaw Tootin and Chris Rodriguez.
01:27And you may not get the explosive runs that you got from Travis Achan last year.
01:32But what they're looking for is more efficiency from these guys.
01:35What they're great at is the yards after contact.
01:38And that'll be on display today.
01:39All right.
01:39We talked so much about the Jags and their success.
01:41Meanwhile, for the Cleveland Browns, they are revamping things again.
01:45Todd Munkin, longtime assistant coach in college and in the National Football League,
01:50takes over the helm.
01:51And he said that going back and forth from college to the NFL has really helped him sort of coach
01:56this young football team.
01:57I think he feels 20 years younger from all the young guys that he has on his team right now.
02:02But he loves the direction that the Browns are going right now.
02:05And he named Deshaun Watson his starter back in August.
02:08So he comes over from the Texans in 2022.
02:11He's only played 19 games for the Cleveland Browns, suspended for the first 11 games in 2022.
02:17And then the injury started, the shoulder, the Achilles, on two different occasions.
02:22Named the starter on August 24th.
02:24And for more on Deshaun, here's Tiffany Blackman.
02:27Hey, Tom.
02:28Well, we're all waiting to see what version of Deshaun shows up today.
02:32But when we talked to him, he confidently told us that he does feel like his old self again.
02:37Throwing on the run, scrambling.
02:39He said he is comfortable.
02:40And he even told us that he let Coach Todd Munkin know not to hesitate to call anything,
02:45especially those quarterback-driven plays.
02:48He said, let me play free.
02:50So we'll see how it plays out, Tom.
02:52It is amazing that he thinks that he could be their version of Lamar from Baltimore here in Cleveland.
02:59It's opening day here in Jacksonville.
03:02The Jags and the Browns when we return.
03:09Welcome to the NFL kickoff, presented by YouTube TV.
03:14On a red-hot day here in Jacksonville, the Jags and the Browns.
03:19The Browns have won the toss they've elected to receive.
03:25You mentioned it's red-hot down here in Jacksonville.
03:28Not a shocker, obviously, here in September.
03:31But temperature, 91 degrees.
03:34It does feel like 105.
03:36Parts of the stadium have opened up as they've started to redo it.
03:41So there is a little bit more of a breeze down on the field.
03:44And we'll see if the players feel it at all.
03:50Dylan Sampson back deep to receive for the Browns.
03:54And here we go as Little gets into it.
03:56The Browns and the Jags underway.
03:58And Sampson will take it inside the five-yard line.
04:01He has some blockers.
04:02And he's able to narrow his way through the 35 up to the 40-yard line.
04:08Excellent return.
04:09And now Deshaun Watson.
04:11He's only played 19 games in the regular season for the Cleveland Browns.
04:16His last start was back in 2024.
04:19But he does have success against the Jags.
04:21Well, he's undefeated against the Jaguars, surprisingly, in his career.
04:24I think the important thing for Deshaun Watson today is just to be himself.
04:28And whatever the best version of him is at this point in his career, it's important for Todd Munkin to
04:34utilize him in that way.
04:36Not the old Deshaun Watson.
04:37Hines Allen lined up defensively on the right side.
04:39Off the play fake.
04:40Watson looking to throw.
04:41Has plenty of time.
04:42Goes underneath.
04:43Pass is complete to White Hart.
04:45And the tight end gets down to the 46-yard line.
04:49Ventrell Miller makes the tackle.
04:50All right.
04:51So that's a pretty safe play.
04:53Well, he's looking deep for his target there across the middle.
04:57And this is what they're looking for with Deshaun Watson.
04:59Just smart, good decisions.
05:01Nothing there down the field.
05:03Nice coverage there in the secondary by the Jaguars.
05:05So take the check down.
05:08Gate of 14.
05:08It'll be first down for the 46 of Jacksonville.
05:11Just underway, opening drive.
05:14In motion is KC Concepcion.
05:16They give it off to Judkins.
05:18And Judkins dances left, goes to right.
05:20And he's down to the 43-yard line.
05:23All right.
05:23Let's look at the key matchup that you're thinking of with the Browns having the football.
05:28Well, the Browns got a rookie left tackle starting at Spencer Fano.
05:31Incredible college career at Utah.
05:33But he played right tackle.
05:35So here he is on the left side.
05:37And he's going to be going up against Josh Hines Allen.
05:40One of the best defensive ends that we have in the NFL.
05:44You see it right there.
05:45Fourth in the NFL in terms of pressures.
05:47There's that matchup right there with these two guys on the left side of that offensive line.
05:54Second down at six.
05:55Watson underneath.
05:56Pass is complete.
05:57KC Concepcion.
05:58And he's got a first down to the 33.
06:00First-round pick.
06:01A lot is expected of him as an underneath receiver.
06:04Got a lot of expectations.
06:05This is a guy with good speed.
06:07And he'll be utilized in a multitude of different spots, Tom.
06:10Right there, he's lined up in the slot there on the right side.
06:13But he'll be their primary motion man.
06:15You may see him on some fly sweeps.
06:17And take another look at that catch and run there.
06:20And sometimes he could be lined up on the outside.
06:22So a guy with a lot of versatility in his game.
06:24Todd Munkin calling the plays on first down for the 33.
06:28And it looks like Watson is changing the play out of the gun.
06:31Trips to the top of your screen.
06:34On first down, he hands the ball off.
06:36Judkins running to his left.
06:37And Judkins down to the 23-yard line.
06:40Or, excuse me, 29-yard line.
06:42One of our favorite things as a running back is having two of those big guys pull right in front
06:48of you
06:48and lead block for you.
06:51Anthony Campanelli, who's the defense coordinator for the Jags,
06:55they were able to return, retain both coordinators,
06:58which the Jags feel is a really big deal.
07:00Well, it is important for continuity.
07:02Everybody comes back to the offseason and the spring training camp
07:05already with some familiarity with the system.
07:09So now it's just about perfecting it.
07:11The outstanding tight end, Fannin, is on the right side of the offensive line.
07:14Watson under pressure.
07:16Chipped.
07:16He throws to his left.
07:18Intercepted at the 20-yard line.
07:20Right out of the gates.
07:22And the Jaguars will get the football.
07:27Deshaun Watson was leading a comfortable drive,
07:30but Oluwakid was able to come in and snub that one out.
07:38Last year, the Jags had 22 interceptions.
07:42They have their first one on the first drive of 2026.
07:50The NFL on CBS is sponsored by FanDuel.
07:57Make this your most rewarding season ever.
08:00Allstate, you're in good hands.
08:04And by Honda, proud partner of Team USA.
08:14Downtown Jacksonville, where you can probably hear the sounds from the stadium after Deshaun Watson threw the interception.
08:20Oluwakid with his ninth career INT.
08:22Remember, last year, the Jags had 31 takeaways.
08:25That was second most of the National Football League.
08:28So, they have excellent field position.
08:29First possession.
08:30It's Tootin.
08:31And Tootin bounces to his right.
08:33And he's up to the 44.
08:35Run me through this interception.
08:36Well, they bring the blitz here with Miller.
08:39Boom, down to Miller.
08:40Running back actually does a good job securing that.
08:43And Oluwakid comes from his left side to the right side.
08:46And Deshaun Watson just doesn't see him.
08:48And so, he steps up in the pocket.
08:50Good pass protection there.
08:52But just doesn't see Oluwakid come from the right side of the offense to the left.
08:57And able to sneak underneath there and get the interception.
09:00Well, he's so athletic.
09:01I think we've seen that during his career with the Falcons and with the Jags.
09:05On second down, they go to Tootin again.
09:06And Tootin slips a tackle and gets to midfield.
09:09Very close to a first down.
09:12Trevor Lawrence looked really good last year.
09:15There are times where he looks like he's one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League.
09:19Well, he's got versatility in his game in terms of being able to hit the short routes,
09:22the deep routes, and then use his legs.
09:24And that was real emphasis last year.
09:26And he's looking to carry that over into this year in terms of his running ability.
09:30On third down, they go a little jet sweep.
09:32They give it to DeTorby Myers.
09:33And Myers has the first down to the 48.
09:37It's so relaxing to talk to Trevor Lawrence, to visit it, the way he's evolved over the years.
09:46Getting a hold.
09:47Tom, it really is.
09:49And when we saw him last year, he was just getting a hold of things and getting a feel for
09:53this offense.
09:54But he said now this is the most comfortable he's felt here in Jacksonville.
09:57Because of the success they're coming off of last season.
09:59And because of his second year in this offense, Tom.
10:02Yeah, he's had a lot of offense coordinators during his time.
10:05He did credit Doug Peterson, his previous coach, and said how good he was to work with.
10:10They hand the ball off to Rodriguez, his first touch of the season.
10:13And Rodriguez gets down to the 45.
10:16Turbo, how are they going to use?
10:18How is Liam Cohen going to use these running backs?
10:21I think the priority is to keep these guys fresh throughout ballgames.
10:25And one of the skill sets that they both do really well is break tackles, yards after contact.
10:31You see Chris Rodriguez with an inside zone run right there.
10:34He was second in the league last year in terms of yards after contact.
10:38And so they want more efficiency on the ground.
10:41Yeah, Liam Cohen said it's not one guy.
10:43He said that Tootin's probably the head of the committee.
10:46But it is a committee in the backfield.
10:49On the second down, you heard Lawrence say they're good.
10:51He's going to throw off the plate.
10:52Oh, the fourth pass is complete.
10:54Parker Washington.
10:55And he's got a first down to the 33-yard line.
10:58Tyson Campbell, the former Jag, makes the tackle.
11:06One-on-one opportunity here for Parker Washington going up against Tyson Campbell, a former Jaguar.
11:16They feel comfortable in their man scheme there defensively in Cleveland.
11:21Parker Washington, one of the harder guys to guard.
11:23And this is what the Jaguars want to do, establish the run, get big plays off play action.
11:30First out of the 33, they give it to Rodriguez.
11:32Rodriguez spins away from the contacts.
11:35Gain of three yards.
11:37Let's check in with Adam Schein in New York.
11:39Tom McCarthy, first touchdown of his first NFL Sunday.
11:42Jonathan Taylor, capping a 9-place 65-yard drive.
11:45And Taylor takes it in.
11:46Extra points, no good.
11:48Six-nothing Colts, back to you.
11:51All right, Adam.
11:52I got to tell you, I think Jonathan Taylor is going to have a great year for the Colts.
11:55I know it's a franchise that you're very familiar with, but I think he's going to continue to just get
11:59better and better.
12:00Well, he's an all-time great.
12:02He really is, Tom.
12:03And they're going to be leaning on him again to have a big year.
12:05Second down and seven, ball just inside the 30-yard line of the Browns.
12:11Borkutcher in motion.
12:13Off the fake, Lawrence adjusting to his left.
12:16He's going to throw it away.
12:17The pressure was coming.
12:20You talked about the key matchup when the Browns have the ball.
12:23How about the key matchup when the Jags have the ball?
12:25Well, the Jaguars are very familiar with Jared Verst, the defensive end for the Cleveland Browns.
12:31Played him in week seven last year when he was a Ram.
12:34And starting that left tackle was not Anton Harrison.
12:37It was Walker Little, but Anton Harrison will be starting.
12:40It will be a much more difficult matchup for Jared Verst this time around.
12:45So those two guys battling it out today is what I'm going to be looking at.
12:49Yeah, Harrison making the adjustment to left tackle.
12:52He said it feels like home being a left tackle.
12:54Here comes the pressure again for Lawrence.
12:56He's going toward the end zone.
12:57Caught!
12:58Diving catch.
12:59Parker, Washington.
13:01Touchdown, Jaguars!
13:0530 yards.
13:08What an athletic grab.
13:17Well, you get a miscommunication in the secondary that time, Tom, and that allows for Parker Washington to get behind
13:25the defense.
13:26Look at this catch right here.
13:28I mean, that's selling out.
13:30He's got control.
13:32Forearm into the end zone right there.
13:36There's no bobble with the football.
13:38That's a clean catch.
13:40Yeah, Washington last year number one in receiving yards for the Jags.
13:43And they love their talented wide receiver room.
13:47The point after is good.
13:49And the Jaguars, off the turnover from Deshaun Watson, have turned it into seven.
13:57Oluwikin sets things up, snuffs out a drive, and then Washington finishes it off with an exclamation.
14:06You're watching NFL Kickoff, presented by YouTube TV.
14:11Along with Robert Turbin, Tiffany Blackburn, I'm Tom McCarthy here in Jacksonville.
14:16Gene Sterritore is always with us.
14:18Off the turnover, the Jags take a 7-0 lead.
14:22Sampson will get another chance to return this one for the Browns.
14:25He was able to get out close to the 40-yard line the first time.
14:28Not much this time.
14:30All right, let's do a little turbo time.
14:32Run through that touchdown for us.
14:34Well, keep your eyes right here on Miles Harden lined up right there and Swessinger.
14:39They're going to get tied up on this inside release route by Parker Washington.
14:44So there he goes.
14:45He releases inside.
14:46Look at it.
14:47Caught up right there.
14:48And that just slows down Miles Harden just enough.
14:50He can't keep up with the speed of Parker Washington able to get over the top.
14:55It's interesting talking to the Jags.
14:57You know, they have Travis Hunter, who's so talented.
14:59Right?
14:59Who can be a two-way player.
15:01They're going to have him concentrate.
15:03Holding.
15:04Offense.
15:05Number 28.
15:06It's a 10-yard penalty.
15:08First down.
15:08Well, that's a late flag.
15:10So Craig Rolstead, the official, let us know it was a 10-yard penalty.
15:14Anyway, so Hunter is going to play more defense than offense because of guys like Parker Washington
15:18for the Jags.
15:19No doubt.
15:19And they feel that he's a more natural cover corner player than he is a wide receiver.
15:26But they will have packages for him on offense.
15:28So expect to see him on that side of the football as well.
15:30All right.
15:31Second drive for Deshaun.
15:32The ball started at the 17 for the Browns.
15:35White Hart came in motion.
15:37They pitch it to Judkins.
15:39And Judkins bounces off a defender or two.
15:41Gets up to the 21.
15:42It's a gain of four.
15:44Judkins really looking to have a bounce back year.
15:48Obviously dealt with some injury last season.
15:50He feels fresh.
15:51He told us that his focus was getting healthy.
15:54That was the first thing.
15:55And then the second thing was how he wanted to be able to spread his familiarity with this
16:00offense, his knowledge, being used more in the passing game than he was last year.
16:08After the gain of four, it'll be second down.
16:12Receivers tight to the line at the top.
16:13They hand it off again to Judkins, trying to make a bad miss.
16:16And the defense was there.
16:17He might have gotten a half a yard.
16:23Allen Strigo.
16:24All right, Judkins, have you ever skateboarded turbo?
16:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:27I did, and it failed.
16:28It was really bad.
16:30Well, 827 yards last year.
16:32He credits skateboard skills for balance running with the football.
16:36He's off now on third down.
16:39And let's see if the Jags bring pressure here against Deshaun Watson.
16:44Yeah, Dylan Sampson is in the game, one of their primary receiving wide receivers.
16:48But this is the area the Jags like to bring some pressure in these third and long situations.
16:53Oh, here they come.
16:54Now they pull it back.
16:55Watson, pocket collapsing.
16:57Hines Allen is there.
16:58He spins away.
16:59Watson does.
17:00Almost intercepted.
17:03It'll be fourth down.
17:09Aluakid again was in the neighborhood.
17:12There's Hines Allen.
17:14Left side of your screen.
17:15Onfano, just a bull rush.
17:16Look at that matchup right there.
17:19Just enough to force Deshaun Watson out of the pocket, and he takes a big hit right there.
17:27Been close to roughing the passer, but good job by this Jacksonville Jaguars defense getting the stop.
17:34But Jorge is on the punt.
17:36He had two blocks last year, the most he's ever had in a season.
17:40This is a high, booming kick.
17:42Washington will grab it at the 32 near the sidelines.
17:45Makes a man miss.
17:46Trying to make another man miss.
17:47He does.
17:48Now there's a lot of traffic, and he's going to go down.
17:53Second drive of the day for the Jaguars, and Trevor Lawrence up 7-0 here in the first quarter.
18:03The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Chipotle.
18:09Real food made fresh for you every day.
18:12And by Verizon.
18:14The NFL is powered by Verizon 5G.
18:20Just off the St. Johns River is Everbank Stadium here in Jacksonville, Florida.
18:24They're calling the revamped version of this the Stadium of the Future.
18:29They're putting $1.4 billion into refurbishing it, and it's going to be really beautiful when it reopens in 2028.
18:37It'll be first down to the Jags.
18:39The ball at the 26-yard line.
18:42That's strange that came in motion.
18:43Off the play fake.
18:44Lawrence looking to throw.
18:45Pressure's coming.
18:46Lawrence breaks away.
18:47He'll just throw it away.
18:49That was good pursuit.
18:50Everybody seemed to be covered.
18:52Isaiah McGuire, the outstanding defensive end out of Mizzou.
18:55Well, what the Jaguars did right there is they went 13 personnel, okay?
18:59So one back, three tight ends, which is typically a run type of personnel that you would have.
19:07Try to get them with a play action there.
19:09That's not a great sign for Dylan Sampson heading to the locker room, getting checked out.
19:14Third down back for the Browns.
19:18It'll be second down at 10.
19:24Four-man front defensively for Cleveland.
19:27Lawrence to throw.
19:28Sails this one of the near sideline.
19:29Oh, what a toe tap by Brian Thomas.
19:32We'll go to New York with Adam Schein with another update.
19:35Tom McCarthy.
19:36How about this revamped Cincinnati defense?
19:39Sack.
19:40Tumble.
19:41Return.
19:43Demetrius Knight Jr. taking it to the house.
19:457-3 Cincinnati back to you.
19:52Well, there are a lot of folks that think that the Bengals could make another run at the AFC North.
19:56We'll see.
19:57It is revamped.
19:58There's no doubt, but they also still have Joe Burrow.
20:01That was a heck of a catch, by the way, by Brian Thomas, resulting in a first down for the
20:05Jags.
20:07And a first down for the 36.
20:10Lawrence to the outside.
20:11One-handed catch by Washington.
20:13He stepped right in front of Miles Harden to get that before he's knocked out of bounds.
20:19You know, one of the key points for Trevor Lawrence and his evolution as a quarterback
20:24is completing these out routes right here, especially from the opposite hash.
20:28And Coach Liam Cohen talked about, look at that one hand right there, bobbled it, focus.
20:33Good concentration there by Parker Washington.
20:36But there's Coach Liam Cohen talked about, man, he's good with those in cuts, but the out cuts
20:42is where we want to improve, and a couple good throws in a row right there.
20:45Yeah, so coming inside the numbers is where his strength is.
20:48And there was a jump on the outside of the defensive line.
20:54Neutral zone fraction.
20:55Defense, number 54.
20:57It's a five-yard penalty, which results in a first down.
21:01Sam Williams called for the penalty.
21:04And by the way, we just heard that Dylan Sampson has a knee injury that they're tending to,
21:09so his return is questionable.
21:13Ball moves up to the 47-yard line of first down for the Jags.
21:23Under five minutes to play in the first quarter.
21:27And Lawrence off the play fake.
21:29Lawrence Wobbler has to play Thomas again.
21:32Well, they really would like him to get back.
21:34He fell on the football.
21:36But the Jaguars were able to fall on top of it.
21:45Tonight's read by Trevor Lawrence.
21:48Thomas sitting right there in the zone,
21:49and this is where you've got to have two hands on that football.
21:53Couldn't tell whether or not his knee was down before the ball came out, but...
21:58There it is right here again.
22:00Boom.
22:01Mmm.
22:01That's close.
22:02Yeah, that's a bang-bang play right there,
22:04but this is why you're coached,
22:06to always pursue the ball
22:08when your teammate has it
22:10for situations like that.
22:12Well, the ball is spotted at the 41-yard line.
22:14And that bad snap.
22:16Lawrence picks it up.
22:17Flags come in.
22:19That may be a false start against the Jaguars.
22:26Liam Cohen's wondering who it's against
22:28and what it was.
22:31False start.
22:33Offense.
22:34Number 73.
22:36The center.
22:37It's a five-yard penalty.
22:38Still first down.
22:39Remember, 27 false starts last year for Jacksonville.
22:42Even though they won the AFC,
22:44they won the AFC South,
22:45that was still something that they really want to clean up.
22:49There he is right here.
22:52That's Robert Hainsey.
22:55You can tell Trevor Lawrence
22:57wasn't even ready for that.
22:58He was not ready for it.
22:58He was not ready for it.
22:59He was not ready for it.
23:00He was not ready for it.
23:02He was not ready for it.
23:02And here's that adjustment
23:03at the line of scrimmage
23:04that we talked about at the start of the game.
23:07But first down at 15.
23:09Drops back to pass.
23:10Little pump fake.
23:11Now he may run it.
23:13And he throws it left-handed out of bounds.
23:16I think he was past the line of scrimmage
23:18when he threw it.
23:21Schlesinger was in on the coverage.
23:24Let's take a look at this.
23:28Feels like you can't outflank Schlesinger right there.
23:30So, and there comes the flag.
23:33Yeah, here comes the assist for the officials.
23:37I thought he was past the line of scrimmage as well.
23:39He definitely was past the line of scrimmage.
23:44Illegal forward pass.
23:46Offense, number 16.
23:48Threw the ball from beyond the line of scrimmage.
23:50It's a fired penalty.
23:51Losser down.
23:53Second down.
23:54You see the imaginary line there at the 46.
23:57And watch where Lawrence is
23:58when he lets this one go.
24:01That was pretty clear.
24:03And again, the officials can get help
24:04on plays like that
24:06where the ball should be marked,
24:07where penalties, you know, things like that.
24:11He tried to channel his inner Colby or Jordan there
24:13switching to the left side.
24:15I don't know what he was trying to do.
24:16Listen, if he was behind,
24:17if he completed it from behind the line of scrimmage,
24:19it would have been really impressive.
24:20There you go.
24:22Second down at 20.
24:24So two penalties for the Jags.
24:28And Lawrence,
24:29his pass complete to Parker Washington.
24:31It doesn't seem to matter.
24:33It's a gain of 23.
24:35Ronnie Hickman was in on the coverage.
24:40The recognition right now
24:41for Trevor Lawrence is pretty impressive
24:44because Browns, what they're doing
24:45is they're mixing up their coverage.
24:47They're going, man.
24:48Sometimes they're going zone.
24:49And right here,
24:51a cover two
24:52and finding his open target,
24:54Parker Washington.
24:55They're back at the line of scrimmage.
24:56Yeah, so Liam Cohen told us
24:58they were going to do this more.
25:02This is his control right here.
25:06A first down off the play fake.
25:08Looking to throw again.
25:09Throws toward the middle.
25:10Oh, tight window.
25:11And Thomas is able to grab it inside the 10.
25:16Parker Washington and Brian Thomas
25:18having themselves a heck of a first quarter.
25:21Well, it was certainly a point of emphasis
25:23going into the offseason
25:25as we take a look at that good contested catch right there
25:28going up against his former teammate, Tyson Campbell.
25:33The emphasis getting the ball
25:35to Brian Thomas Jr. more.
25:37More consistency.
25:38And I think, look,
25:39there's a lot of mouths to feed
25:40in that wide receiver room.
25:43But collectively,
25:44this can be one of the more dangerous units
25:46in the NFL.
25:47Rodriguez comes in in the backfield
25:49as they're inside the red zone
25:50on first and goal.
25:51Hurry, hurry.
25:53And Lawrence gives it to Rodriguez.
25:54And Rodriguez lowers his shoulder,
25:56gets down inside the five.
25:58We'll mark him just beyond that five-yard line.
26:01And so you'll notice throughout this game,
26:04and we saw this in practice, Tom,
26:05when the Jaguars get inside the 20-yard line,
26:08so they're in the red zone goal line area.
26:10There's Tootin there on the sideline.
26:12This is really Chris Rodriguez's area.
26:15And that's not something we expected to see
26:20when we went out there to watch the Jags.
26:23And so they feel more comfortable
26:24with Chris Rodriguez in these situations.
26:27The rookie, Josh Cameron,
26:29in for the first time.
26:30He's at the bottom of your screen for the Jags.
26:33Myers goes in motion off the play fake.
26:35Lawrence looking to throw.
26:36Passes, completes.
26:37Cameron, the rookie.
26:40Balls it in toward the back of the end zone.
26:45Thirteen-nothing Jacksonville.
26:47Woo-hoo!
26:50That was a strike right there, Tom.
26:54Good patience at the line of scrimmage
26:56from Josh Cameron.
26:57Watch this.
26:59Stabs the football.
27:01Engaged.
27:03That's Denzel Ward right there.
27:05I mean, you're a rookie,
27:07and you're able to get over to get Denzel Ward.
27:10That's big time.
27:12Josh Cameron, a former walk-on in college,
27:15turned himself into a sixth-round draft pick.
27:19Had three receptions for 58 yards
27:22in the preseason,
27:24and the point after is good.
27:27Two really strong drives for Jacksonville,
27:31resulting in touchdowns
27:33as they lead it 14-0 here in the first quarter.
27:42Fourteen first quarter points for Jacksonville.
27:45Trevor Lawrence just threw his 100th career touchdown pass.
27:50He's the third Jags to do it in the history of the franchise.
27:53And the kickoff will go to the end zone.
27:56From the creators of The Good Wife
27:58comes a new series about a small firm taking on big power.
28:02Cupertino premieres Thursday, October 8th,
28:05as part of CBS Premier Week.
28:09Deshaun Watson,
28:11his third drive of the day.
28:15And there's Sampson,
28:16who's come back out.
28:18He was being checked on
28:21for a knee injury.
28:23Does he have a brace on that knee?
28:25Yeah, it looks like he's got a brace there,
28:26some tape.
28:28Try to mitigate some of that pain there
28:30he may be feeling.
28:32All right, what does Deshaun Watson have to do here?
28:34First to 10 from the 35.
28:35Well, look, I think
28:36Quinshaun Judkins still needs to be
28:38the vocal part of this offense,
28:39but just to continue to make smart decisions
28:42and be confident in himself.
28:44Four-man front defensively.
28:46He almost ran into Judkins on that one.
28:48He can run it still,
28:49but he's shoved out of bounds.
28:52Trayvon Walker was there to make the tackle.
28:54It's a loss on the play.
28:55So what Todd Munkin is trying to do here
28:58as the adjustment is
29:00get Deshaun Watson in a little bit of space.
29:03Judkins looks like he went the wrong way right there,
29:06so the play action wasn't able to be effective.
29:09And you get a guy like Trayvon Walker
29:11who's got good speed, able to run him down.
29:14So second down at 11
29:16after the loss on that play.
29:20The Browns with a revamped offensive line.
29:25Made some major changes from last year to this year.
29:28Watson underneath Judkins.
29:30And Judkins has bounced behind the line of scrimmage
29:33and then thrown out at the original line of scrimmage.
29:36Ventrell Miller will be credited with the tackle.
29:39I don't think the Browns should shy away from those throws down the field.
29:43They started off the game
29:45wanting to target guys down the field,
29:47and it seems like now the route concepts are shorter.
29:50So now you're putting yourselves in these third and long situations.
29:53This is exactly what the Jaguars want.
29:56I mean, they pounce on opportunities like this
29:58to be able to take the football away.
29:59Yeah, this is where you have to take a look at Josh Hines Allen
30:02where he is.
30:05Sanders in the game.
30:06In the backfield.
30:08Watson steps up.
30:09Pressures cover and lost the football!
30:12It was knocked away,
30:14and we'll see who recovered it.
30:17It looked like Josh Hines Allen
30:19was one of the first people there.
30:21He and Gardick.
30:24And it's going to be fourth down,
30:27and Bohorquez will come on to punt.
30:32It's just what you said, Turbo.
30:34Just putting pressure on.
30:36And one of the areas
30:38that Deshaun Watson has
30:41always had struggles with
30:43is keeping two hands on the football
30:45in the pocket,
30:47and Hines Allen relentless to the quarterback,
30:51able to win that one-on-one matchup
30:53with Spencer Fano again.
30:55End of the first quarter.
30:56It's all Jags.
30:57They're up 14-0.
31:04Jaguars are up 14-0.
31:06It's been a rough start for Deshaun Watson.
31:08Three for five, 24 yards.
31:10He's been sacked a couple of different times.
31:13Meanwhile, for Trevor Lawrence,
31:15well, I think everything looks pretty good
31:16for Trevor Lawrence right now.
31:17Well, yeah, it's been pretty much
31:19smooth sailing.
31:21It hadn't been perfect,
31:22but they've been executing
31:23at a high-level offensive.
31:24Well, the Jags will get the football back.
31:26Washington is back deep to receive this punt
31:29as Bohorquez has no pressure on him.
31:32This is a high wobbler,
31:34and Washington will take it at the 27.
31:36He called for the fair catch.
31:39Trevor Lawrence,
31:41eight of 11, 115 yards.
31:44Going back at it.
31:45We'll be back in 30 seconds
31:47after this from State Farm.
31:52So I can create a personal price plan
31:54to fit my life and budget.
31:56I'm thrilled.
31:57You sure you're happy?
31:58This is me happy.
31:59Will it cover my dream car?
32:01Yeah.
32:01And my home gym?
32:02Sure.
32:03And this TV playing my favorite movies?
32:05That's not a movie.
32:06And this prized vehicle,
32:07I'm totally obsessed with?
32:09Yep.
32:09And this Oasis of Tranquility?
32:11Of course.
32:12Thanks, Jake.
32:13I'm so excited.
32:14Yeah, I can tell.
32:15I can't stop smiling about it.
32:16Create a personal price plan
32:18that fits your life and budget.
32:23We enjoyed our conversation
32:25with Jared Burse
32:26in preparation for this football game,
32:28but it may be time for the Browns
32:29to amp it up a little bit
32:30against Trevor Lawrence defensively.
32:32Well, they've been bringing
32:32primarily four-man rush.
32:34I'm trying to bring some glitches here
32:35to try to make Trevor uncomfortable
32:36in the pocket.
32:37Certainly not uncomfortable there.
32:40Borkinshire has it for a first down
32:42or close to the first down.
32:44Tiffany, you have an update
32:45on Dylan Sampson?
32:46I do, Tom.
32:47He is out for the rest of the game
32:49with a knee injury.
32:50So that's a tough break
32:51for the Browns
32:51and the running back core.
32:52But it looks like now
32:53they're going to be looking
32:54more to Raheem Sanders
32:55behind Quinch on Judkins, Tom.
32:57Yeah, Dylan Sampson
32:58is such a good offset to Judkins.
33:02Looked like he tried
33:03to give it a go.
33:04It'll be second down and one
33:06for the Jags.
33:10Tootin is back
33:11into the backfield.
33:12Brenton Strange was the man
33:14in motion for Jacksonville.
33:16And Lawrence to throw again
33:17and Lawrence throws
33:18to the right side.
33:19Tipped and incompletes.
33:21It looked like Washington was open.
33:24Delpit was in the neighborhood.
33:26But he just overthrew him.
33:27It's a good job really
33:28by Parker Washington
33:29getting a hand on that football
33:30had he not.
33:31Delpit was right there
33:33for the interception
33:34and really the first
33:36sort of questionable decision
33:38from Trevor Lawrence
33:39today on that throw.
33:42Yeah, he and Washington
33:43have connected nicely so far.
33:45Got an extra lineman in.
33:47Wyatt Millam
33:48is the extra lineman
33:50for the Jags.
33:52Wyatt Milam, excuse me.
33:54Here comes the
33:55wildcat formation
33:57with Chris Rodriguez.
33:58And Lawrence is the receiver
34:00at the bottom of your screen.
34:01They have him way away
34:02from the action.
34:02Rodriguez, I think,
34:03has the first down
34:04up to the 39-yard line.
34:07Malik Collins
34:08made the tackle
34:09for the Browns.
34:13Chris Rodriguez,
34:14just a simple
34:15inside zone play
34:17to get a good kick out
34:18blocked by Britton Strange.
34:20Able to open up
34:21that lane for him.
34:21As a running back
34:22who still has arms
34:23that could probably lift
34:241,000 pounds,
34:26did you like the wildcat?
34:28I loved it.
34:29I loved it.
34:30It forces the defense
34:31to play 11 on 11.
34:32And even though
34:33the quarterback
34:34may not be impactful,
34:36I could throw it to him.
34:37And Russell probably
34:38wanted to throw it
34:39over time to time.
34:40Here's Travis Hunter
34:41in for the first time
34:42offensively.
34:44And he's able to get up
34:45to the 42-yard line.
34:47Hunter had a lot
34:48of offensive snaps
34:49last year.
34:50But they're so deep
34:51at the wide receiver room
34:54that they want him,
34:55and he's so good
34:56as a cover corner,
34:57they want him to focus
34:58on being a cover corner.
35:00Yeah, and they didn't
35:00have as much depth
35:01at corner.
35:02And so when they went
35:03into the spring
35:03and they went
35:04into training camp,
35:05that's where they
35:06wanted to utilize him more.
35:07But this is what
35:07his packages will look like,
35:09those fly sweeps,
35:10and they want to get him
35:11on one-on-one situations
35:12in man coverage.
35:15Second down,
35:16they quickly go to
35:17Jacoby Myers.
35:18Myers has some blockers,
35:19and Myers pounds his way
35:21for a first down,
35:22and he's out toward midfield.
35:26Tyson Campbell made the tackle.
35:28Look at the extra effort
35:30at the end of this run.
35:31There's the catch.
35:33He gets to the outside.
35:34Good job blocking,
35:35but it's right here.
35:36Boom.
35:37That extra effort
35:40to jump forward
35:42and move the chains
35:44and Jacoby Myers,
35:46since he walked in the building
35:48in Jacksonville,
35:49has become an instant leader.
35:50Coach M. Cohen said
35:51he wasn't voted captain
35:52last year,
35:53but he might as well
35:54have been voted one
35:56this year for this football team.
35:57You just saw Mike Rudenberg,
35:58who's the defensive coordinator
36:00for the Browns.
36:02Tootin gets the pitch.
36:04Not much is there.
36:05Still moving down to the 45.
36:07It's a gate of five.
36:08Let's go to Adam Schott
36:10in New York.
36:11Tom McCarthy,
36:12Josh Allen doing
36:13what I think Josh Allen thinks.
36:15He's 0-4 in his career
36:16in Houston,
36:17and he says,
36:18I'll do it myself.
36:2021 yards for the score.
36:22Look at that move.
36:2310-7.
36:24Bill's leading Houston
36:25back to you.
36:26He is such a weapon,
36:28there's no doubt.
36:29Bill's 73-27 record.
36:32Since he entered the league,
36:33it'll be second down
36:34and five here.
36:39Got that big personnel,
36:41multiple tight ends
36:41in the game.
36:42Yeah,
36:42including Quinton Morris,
36:43they hand it off to Tootin.
36:45Tootin is able to sidestep
36:47his way to his left
36:49for first down
36:49to the 38-yard line.
36:51Ronnie Hickman made the tackle.
36:53Think about the balance
36:55that Jacksonville has right now.
36:57They're running the football.
37:00They're running plays
37:02off play action.
37:03And so even though
37:04they have an offense established
37:06where they want to run through
37:07Trevor Lawrence,
37:10they've been able to create
37:11this balance
37:12and keep really Cleveland's defense
37:14off balance.
37:17on this drive.
37:18Four carries,
37:19three passes,
37:2034 yards,
37:21chewed up some clock.
37:25Lawrence,
37:26his pass is incomplete,
37:27intended for Quinton Morris.
37:29And he just led him
37:30a little too far,
37:31so
37:31it'll be second down at 10.
37:36Not much
37:37from Jared Verse today,
37:39and it's tough
37:40as a pass rusher
37:41when,
37:42you know,
37:42a team is able
37:43to run the football
37:43and drive down
37:45the field.
37:45You don't get into
37:46those 30-long situations
37:47where you're really,
37:48really able to
37:49let it rip
37:50in terms of your
37:51pass rusher skill sets.
37:53And Jaguars so far
37:54are doing a good job.
37:55Anton Harrison
37:56and throwing those
37:57extra blockers at him
37:59in terms of trip blocks
38:00as well.
38:02Yeah,
38:02first,
38:03last year,
38:03seven and a half sacks
38:04for the Rams.
38:05Here's Hunter,
38:06and Hunter slips his way
38:08inside the 35,
38:09down to the 30.
38:11They're gonna mark him
38:12close to that 29-yard line.
38:14Mason Graham
38:14eventually made the tackle.
38:16You know,
38:17it's really fascinating
38:17how Liam Cohen
38:19is just able to get
38:21all of these
38:22skilled players
38:23involved.
38:24You talked about
38:25the three wide receivers,
38:26Jacoby Myers,
38:27Brown Thomas,
38:27Junior Parker,
38:28Washington.
38:28There's Travis Hunter.
38:29The tight ends
38:31are in the mix
38:32in terms of targets
38:33in this football game.
38:33And so as a defense,
38:36who do you key on?
38:37It makes it so difficult
38:38to defend a team
38:39like the Jaguars
38:40with so many options.
38:41Yeah,
38:41we asked Todd Munkin
38:42when Travis Hunter
38:43comes in,
38:43I mean,
38:43do you have anything special?
38:45He said,
38:45we really can't do
38:46anything special.
38:47We do what we do best
38:49as a defense.
38:50As Rodriguez gets close
38:51to the first down marker,
38:53might be about
38:53a half a yard short.
38:56So this is an interesting
38:58right here.
38:58It's fourth down.
38:59I think they should
39:00go for it here.
39:01But, you know,
39:02we talked to Liam Cohen
39:03about, man,
39:04when you get to
39:05fourth down situations
39:06and you got to lay up
39:07in Cam Little,
39:08what do you do?
39:09And he says it's tough.
39:11It's tough.
39:12You take the points
39:13or not,
39:14I think because of
39:15the momentum
39:15that they have
39:16offensively,
39:17you would go for it.
39:18They should go for it here.
39:19But, I mean,
39:21it's almost like
39:22having Steph Curry
39:23kicking field goals
39:24for you
39:25with Cam Little.
39:26Well, he is really good.
39:27He's got the NFL record
39:2868-yard field goal.
39:30This is from 47.
39:31High snap handled well.
39:33Kick is on the way
39:34and it is
39:34Steph Curry-like.
39:36It is good.
39:37And it's 17-0.
39:39Jags on top.
39:40It's all Jacksonville.
39:429-0-9 to play.
39:43First half.
39:44Deshawn will have
39:45to make some adjustments.
39:4917-0.
39:50Jacksonville is on top.
39:519-0-9 to play
39:52in the first half.
39:53The Browns back deep
39:54to receive.
39:55Again, no Dylan Sampson.
39:57He's out for the game.
39:58Cam Little's kickoff
39:59is a short one.
40:01It's going to be handled
40:02by Malachi Corley.
40:04And Corley
40:05snakes his way
40:06up across the 30.
40:08High steps
40:08across the 35.
40:10And the pile moves down,
40:12moves up to the 38.
40:13Time now for the
40:13sideline report
40:14presented by
40:15Chet GPT.
40:17Let's send it down
40:17to our agent of chaos,
40:19Tiffany Blackman.
40:20Oh, wow.
40:21Thanks, Tom.
40:22Well, agent of chaos here
40:23did some work
40:24during pregame.
40:24And I caught up
40:25with Travis Hunter
40:26about that Colorado
40:27connection with him
40:29and Shador Sanders,
40:30both getting to share
40:31this field.
40:32And Travis could not
40:33say enough about
40:34his excitement
40:34being able to be
40:35out here and see
40:36Shador.
40:37He called him my brother
40:38and I had them
40:39for a couple
40:39Colorado games, Tom.
40:41So I know how tight
40:42knit of a unit they are.
40:44They really appreciate
40:45having this moment today.
40:46Yeah, no doubt.
40:47They lean on each other
40:47on and off the field.
40:49It'll be first down
40:50for the 39.
40:51They hand the ball
40:51to Judkins.
40:54Judkins up to the
40:5540-yard line.
40:56I mean, you played
40:56college football.
40:57You had, you know,
40:58guys that you really
40:59cared about.
41:00And this is what
41:00these two guys went
41:01through when they were
41:02at Colorado.
41:03No doubt about it.
41:04And, you know,
41:04I can remember
41:06Bobby Wagner and I
41:07getting to the NFL
41:08together and being
41:09on the same team
41:10and being on
41:10different teams
41:11and means a lot.
41:12Well, there's an
41:13injured Cleveland Brown
41:14they're going to tend to.
41:16We'll take a break
41:17and be back
41:17right after this.
41:24The NFL on CBS
