Hidden deep along British Columbia’s Indian Arm, Buntzen Powerhouse No. 2 looks less like a hydroelectric station and more like a Gothic fortress. Built in 1914 on a remote cliffside with access by water, the powerhouse was part of an ambitious early-20th-century hydroelectric project designed to supply electricity to the growing Vancouver region.
In this episode, we explore how engineers blasted tunnels through solid granite, moved massive equipment by sea, built a remote company settlement above the powerhouse, and transformed the surrounding landscape. We also uncover the political and environmental battles surrounding the project, its eventual abandonment, and the surprising reason horror fans may recognize this forgotten Canadian landmark: it appeared as Pennywise’s lair in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s IT.
