00:00Kyle Shanahan's name has been coming up a lot today.
00:03And the internet helped us with this.
00:05First of all, he spoke.
00:06He spoke a couple hours ago, about an hour and a half ago.
00:10The injury news is a bummer.
00:12Jake Tonjes is out for the year, and Stribling is going to be out,
00:16they think, about 10 weeks.
00:17They did opt for surgery.
00:18For me, that's a bummer, but there's also some comfort in that,
00:23in that they're not going to kind of try to play the roll the dice game of,
00:27like, let's see if he can rehab his way back.
00:30And then if it feels stable, all right, then we've got him a month from now.
00:34But then you're always kind of worried, like, is something going to go wrong with it?
00:39So they got a few opinions, and they're going the safe route.
00:42And it sucks.
00:43It sucks bad for Stribling.
00:45So much talk about him coming in, and he got just a handful of plays.
00:48And now he's gone until the holidays.
00:51But that is the safe play, and it's the kind of injury that they feel
00:57once he comes back.
00:58That's it.
00:59Like, it's not something that's going to bleed over after that.
01:01So in a way, if we're patient, I think it's a good thing.
01:04And I wonder if the Pearsall process didn't inform them on taking a different approach.
01:10And I know it's a different injury than what Ricky had.
01:12And the Ricky Pearsall one, through all my research as a wannabe doctor,
01:16a radio doctor, you typically go that route where you try to rehab it
01:21and hope for the best.
01:22And this one, I think you do as well.
01:25But then again, it's week one if you just go right to surgery.
01:28And if it's a borderline case, well, just do the surgery.
01:32He's in year one of a four-year deal because he was a second-round pick.
01:36And so he misses 10 weeks, nine games.
01:39And hopefully, as Shanahan said, he comes back, and he's ready to contribute.

01:43So Kyle spoke, but then there's also this, and this is from a handful of months ago,
01:51but Trent Williams had some things to say about Kyle Shanahan
01:54that we want to play for you in a little bit.
01:57Mark Schlereth yesterday had some great things to say about Kyle Shanahan.
02:02I sort of feel like Kyle has picked up right where we left off,
02:05and maybe we forgot about that.
02:06But I think Niner fans, if you remember back to January,
02:11Kyle Shanahan, to many of you, was the coach of the year.
02:14Kyle Shanahan was a guy that took a team to 12-5 record
02:18with most of his good players on the shelf
02:20and a playoff victory on the road against Philadelphia.
02:24That's how most Niner fans left the season.
02:27And then we get to the season, and there's the car accident and weird stuff
02:32and just a strange game to begin with, being in Australia,
02:35going against a team that so many feel is the best team in the league.
02:38And then they performed the way they did, and we're right back to where we left off.
02:42Kyle Shanahan feels like he is among or maybe even the best in the league.
02:48And it got me to thinking, look around the league,
02:50because this year 10 thing to me is fascinating.
02:53Year 10, I'd argue, especially without a ring,
02:58we're supposed to be sick of Kyle by now.
03:00That's the cadence. That is the cadence.
03:03I ran down the list before of coaches,
03:05and some of them are from a different era where now you lose a game
03:08and you've got to go, whereas Marvin Lewis, 17 years,
03:12didn't do much of anything.
03:14Marv Levy, four Super Bowls, but he couldn't win the big one.
03:17And nowadays Kyle's been to, what, two and two conference championships,
03:21and Kyle can't win the big one, so he's got to go.
03:24Different era, but I do think that he's starting to get to that point
03:27where he, not that he needs the Super Bowl, but he needs to keep this up.
03:32See, it's interesting.
03:33I can hear what you're saying, but I also think last year flipped a lot of people.
03:38And maybe the summit helped me learn this.
03:41We did kind of a straw poll thing out at the summit where, you know,
03:45this isn't thousands of people, but it's hundreds.
03:47And we're polling the audience, and remember the question we asked?
03:51What if the Niners go to the playoffs for three straight years
03:53but do not win the Super Bowl?
03:55Do you want Kyle to stay?
03:56It was almost unanimous.
03:58I don't, like, hmm, I'm going to say this in the kindest way.
04:03If you're one of these people out here that really doubts or dislikes Kyle
04:07or wants him fired, you're in the crazy minority.

04:13That's what I think.
04:14Like, I think 49er fans love Kyle Shanahan.
04:17Are there little things that might bug them?
04:19Sure, but that's true about your spouse and your kids, too.
04:22Like, I think you love Kyle Shanahan.
04:24And I think after 10 years, most of the time, unless you're special,
04:31people start to grow tired of you.

04:44Has some of the luster fallen off of Dan Campbell, would you argue?
04:49I think that this, you get into a spot now where this year becomes more important.
04:54And for me, the Shanahan thing is interesting because Sean McDermott is the best example.
05:00Defensive-minded head coach with the best offensive player in football.
05:03And you go to the playoffs every year but one, and you just can't quite get over the hump.
05:08But ultimately, what I think what Josh Allen needed was to have a better offensive mind at the top of
05:15their structure.
05:15So they've done that, and that might actually be the thing that switches it and makes it work.
05:20And LeFleur is an interesting one because he's an offensive guy,
05:24and their offense is supposed to be the best part of their team.
05:27And the clock is starting to tick.
05:29Is this, what, year seven, I think, from LeFleur?
05:31I'd have to look, but somewhere in that neighborhood, yeah.
05:33But the other piece of it is Shanahan has this great quarterback that he found,
05:38and the offense is always really good and a rotating door of defensive coordinators.
05:43But even at that, Steve Wilks got him to the Super Bowl.

05:46I just think, you know, things usually wear out, and I don't feel that right now with Kyle.

05:58And Jim Harbaugh, by the way, has not been on the Chargers for very long,

06:13of the National Football League, and there's a growing number of interviews
06:16where it appears Jim Harbaugh's forgotten how to speak.
