Willard and Dibs explain how Kyle Shanahan, despite having not won a Super Bowl, is a much better head coach than both Sean McVay of the Rams and Nick Sirianni of the Eagles.
Transcript
00:00I'll tiptoe into this one a little bit, because I get it.
00:03I don't think there's any Kyle Shanahan anxiety out there anymore.
00:08Not right now.
00:09I'm 12-5 last year with a road playoff victory with all of his good players hurt.
00:14Most of them.
00:16This year, they're 5-0.
00:17What would the anxiety stem from?
00:20It's not like, well, it was there.
00:22I mean, you're aware of that.
00:23Of course.
00:24What would it stem from?
00:25It would stem from, well, Dibs, he can't win the big one.
00:28He's won 18 of his last 24, including the playoffs.
00:31No, no, no.
00:32Lemon booty when the game is big.
00:34Doesn't know the rules.
00:36Doesn't know the rules.
00:37If they're trailing in the fourth quarter, boy, he's screwed.
00:41He's got no answers.
00:46Arrogant jerk who doesn't want a good quarterback.
00:49Possibly.
00:49He wants a joystick.
00:53Am I wrong on any of those criticisms?
00:55Well, I mean, you're wrong to the extent that you don't believe it and I don't, but you
00:59can have whatever opinion you want to have.
01:01And I'm not trying to shame any anti-Shanahan people, but I just look at the proof, which
01:09is normally in the pudding.
01:10And I'm going to look up where that comes from because it's something I've always said,
01:13but the proof is in the pudding.
01:15What the hell is that?
01:16I've never had pudding and felt like, ooh, that was the proof.
01:20That thing is the proof.
01:21And I've actually been a very long time since I've had pudding, though I might have some
01:26after work because I just went to the restroom and remembered something.
01:30You know how sometimes that's like, you just, your mind kind of meditates for a second because
01:35you're like, we're in the, we're not talking to each other's own.
01:38And I use the restroom and I went, oh, I went to the grocery store today and I never took
01:46those groceries out of the trunk.
01:48No.
01:49So then I went, so what did I buy?
01:51What, what, what did I buy wrong?
01:54Totally.
01:55Um, yeah, there's some ice cream in there.
01:58There's some ice cream sandals.
01:59What did I do wrong?
02:01There's some ice cream sandals in the trunk.
02:03All.
02:05Day.
02:06Well, you could probably still rescue it if you get to your car and back during a break.
02:10What did I see wrong?
02:11Oh, you mean go get them right now?
02:14Pop them in the freezer?
02:14And then put them in the freezer up here?
02:16That feels like a rough, we might get a lead to show dibs for about three minutes.
02:23Oh, you know, the Valkyries are still five days away, but I don't know if you heard, but
02:27Atlanta, they're going to play in an actual arena.
02:30I'm Dan Dibley.
02:32So anyway, I don't know if the proof's in the pudding, but.
02:35Hey, it's Dan Dibley.
02:36Back to.
02:37Las Vegas.
02:38Back to Kyle.
02:39Las Vegas.
02:40Anyway, I guess, and I, look, we've made this point multiple times the last three weeks.
02:47I'm with you.
02:48I'm not trying to, if you don't like Kyle, you don't like Kyle.
02:51But what I want to do, what I would love to take on as my pet project is, it's not
02:59even
02:59really about Kyle.
03:01It's about, can we, can we stop, it's quarterbacks, head coaches, whatever.
03:06Can we stop making the end all be all, whether they've won a ring?
03:11And I know that you're going to be like, no, that is the end all be all.
03:14Sure.
03:14That's the end all be all, but it's not the end all be all in your assessment of an individual.
03:19Because it's a big old team sport, and I, like, if anybody still wants McVay over Shanahan,
03:27fire your call.
03:29I'd love to hear where you're coming from.
03:32This guy has ruined three of the five games they've played this year.
03:37He has left multiple press conferences.
03:41He, uh, well, I mean, this is him, uh, this is him yesterday.
03:46This, uh, this one is, uh, this is the one, this stings, and, uh, it's going to hurt, but
03:51we can't afford to let it, uh, we can't let this team beat us twice, and we're going
03:55to have to regroup and reset ourselves, and it's been a while since I've been this pissed
03:59after a game, too.
03:59Yeah, it's been a while since I've been this pissed.
04:02We can't let this team beat us twice?
04:04Yeah, what he means is we can't let this game bleed into our next one.
04:07Gotcha.
04:08We don't want to get beat by the...
04:09Because I don't think that Buffalo's on your schedule again, unless he's already thinking
04:12Super Bowl.
04:13By the way, yes, shout out to, and Ross Tucker was one of the best.
04:16One of them, I wished I had gotten to talk to Ross Tucker.
04:19There's a bunch of people on Twitter last night that were like, that game was so fun,
04:23that might have been a...
04:24I'll take that match up again in February at SoFi.
04:28They're two and three.
04:31They're two and three, and they're three and a half games behind the Niners.
04:36So, um, yeah, they're allowed to get better.
04:40They're allowed to rally back.
04:42They're allowed to make the Super Bowl from a wild card.
04:44But, um, I'm watching people's Rams take, and they're the exact opposite of people's
04:51Brock Purdy takes.
04:53You...
04:54Nobody wants to leave their take from August.
04:57It's the best team I've ever seen in my entire life, this roster, Ephraim.
05:02I'll take Rams against the field.
05:04I'll take the Rams.
05:05Like, nobody wants to leave their take.
05:07So the Rams are still second in the Super Bowl odds.
05:10Laughable.
05:12Absolutely, positively laughable that the Rams are second in the Super Bowl odds betting right
05:18now.
05:18What a horrible bet.
05:19They're two and three, and they should be one and four.
05:22Well, they probably, and I guess probably is a little aggressive, but I'll say it.
05:27They probably will be seven and three.
05:29You've got the Cardinals, your 11 and a half point favorites.
05:34You've got the Raiders in Las Vegas.
05:36I'll take this bet.
05:37You've got the Chargers at home.
05:39You've got the Commanders and Cardinals both on the road.
05:42That is, I mean, probably five wins.
05:46I'll take the bet.
05:46I'll need odds.
05:47I'm asking for a five-game win streak?
05:50I'm not going to bet this straight out.
05:51You used the word probably.
05:53Right.
05:53But it, again...
05:54It's not probable.
05:55I had the preamble, which was, this is probably a reckless hot take, and so I'm not going
06:01to bet on a reckless hot take of a five-game win streak for a team that is possibly broken.
06:07I hear what you're saying.
06:08They'll be favored in these five games.
06:10At least they are in this moment.
06:13But, yeah, I'm not uncorking a five-game win streak for anybody.
06:18It's hard.
06:19It's hard.
06:20Well, the Niners just uncorked one, as did Minnesota.
06:22And it was hard.
06:23Yeah.
06:23And it takes a lot of close games going your way, and it takes a lot of really good, clean
06:29play.
06:30And you know what it also takes?
06:31Special teams that doesn't have their head up their wahoo.
06:35The Los Angeles Rams right now, the metrics are epic in terms of how many points per game
06:43they lose in special teams over the last few seasons.
06:47It is almost double the next worst team.
06:51It's crazy how bad they've been.
06:53You think Kyle Shanahan used to not pay attention to special teams.
06:57Sean McVay right now left the special teams in Australia, apparently.
07:01Like, absolute malpractice by this guy.
07:05So, anyway, my point is, I hope what you're seeing from the likes of Nick Sirianni and Sean McVay
07:14help you appreciate Kyle Shanahan and his ringless drawer.
07:21Because those dudes who have won a ring are nowhere near the coach that Kyle is.
07:29And I'm, like, McVay's a great coach.
07:31Like, that's cement, but something's wrong this year.
07:34I don't know what it is.
07:35I don't know what has them kind of off with everything they're doing.
07:39You know what I mean?
07:40They've got it all figured out, but then they don't.
07:43Like, oof.
07:44We got Myles Garrett, and you didn't know we've also got Aaron Donald.
07:47And we're going to show up two hours before kick, and you don't realize that sports science
07:51tells us we know what we're doing.
07:54And then, oh, I know you think we should go for it right now and be aggressive, but watch this.
07:59This fat kicker's going to come in and win the game.
08:01That's unnecessary.
08:02I'm sorry, the thicker kicker's going to come in, and he's going to, you just keep telling
08:08us you've got it all figured out, and you don't.
08:12You don't.
08:14So it's great that you're pissed after the game, but, like, oh, it's been a long time
08:19since I've been pissed.
08:20No, it's not.
08:20It's since last week.
08:22You've done this almost every single week.
08:25So, yeah, the Niners have the coach.
08:29The Niners have the coach.
08:31Not the dudes who have a ring years ago and every week right now are making us scratch
08:37our heads with the decisions that they're making.
08:40In Philadelphia, there's no reason that they should have lost that game to Jacksonville.
08:44Jacksonville gave it to them on a platter repeatedly, and I'm thinking about the Rams.
08:48Not so much last night because, yeah, your field goal kicker, if he can make a kick, if
08:52you can block the people who are trying to block your kick, maybe he makes it, the thicker
08:57kicker.
08:57Maybe he keeps his job, but you didn't.
08:59And so you lost that one.
09:01But the Denver game, you're up 16 to nothing third quarter in control in Denver.
09:07Like, go ahead and put that thing away.
09:09You were in need of a closer.
09:10And then all of a sudden it got away from you.
09:13And then now you need Matthew Stafford to save you and he couldn't and you lose.
09:16Yep.
09:16So, I mean, I could see being mad about that one.
09:19Yesterday was just a good old fashioned back and forth kind of uptempo affair.
09:23And it turns out Josh Allen is the best player on the field.
09:27And your kicker and your kick operation, you couldn't block not only one guy, there was
09:32a number of Bills who could have blocked that kick.
09:35Well, this is, this is, I mean, look, Josh Allen's incredible.
09:37I don't know how you stop him from getting first downs.
09:41I don't know.
09:42But I also know this, like the Rams defense, let's take a look at the Rams defense versus
09:48the 49ers defense.
09:50The Rams defense all offseason was just going to be in this immovable object.
09:55Wait a minute.
09:55Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald on the same defensive line with McDuffie running around in the secondary.
10:01What is another team to do?
10:03And I understand that Miles got hurt.
10:05But Aaron Donald doesn't look like Aaron Donald.
10:08And that was a question I had.
10:09They haven't played even a snap together, right?
10:11No, Miles played in game one.
10:13Aaron didn't.
10:14Miles hasn't played since.
10:15And Aaron has missed a game since.
10:17But when he does play, he doesn't look like Aaron Donald, which had been my question all
10:22along.
10:23You can call him Aaron Donald, but this idea that he was going to take two years off from
10:28the sport, hop back in and be every bit of himself, that didn't sound necessarily correct
10:34to me.
10:35And in the second half of the year, maybe Miles will come back from surgery and Aaron will
10:40keep ramping it up and maybe they'll look like a better version of themselves.
10:44That's actually likely.
10:46I'm not, I'm not bearing them as done from this conversation, but I also don't think Miles
10:52Garrett by himself can make this defense that we're watching right now look that much better.
10:58There's only one defense that Bo Nix has moved the ball on this year.
11:02One.
11:03I mean, 37 points last night.
11:06Brock Purdy had next to no trouble against them.
11:12You know, the Philadelphia Eagles, who don't ever score in the second half, scored 20 in
11:17the first half against this defense.
11:19So I don't know what's going on, but what I do know is the defense that we thought that
11:25we were told we were getting from the Rams, we've got it from the Niners.
11:31Raheem Morris deserves so much credit.
11:34The 49ers defense top 10 in the metrics, EPA, every single defensive metric top 10.
11:43So we're not talking about that enough because the Niners are so Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy
11:48related that we get very, and I get it, we're, we're, we're, we're heavy on assessing the
11:54offense.
11:55The 49er defense is the group that the Rams thought they had and, and, and, but don't
12:02and, and the Niners do and they're doing it.
12:06In fact, their best pass rusher is also out just like the Rams, but they're still,
12:13still performing to me.
12:15That's when you can see a great coach, not just because they win the last game of the
12:19year, but because when something bad happens, what do you get next?
12:24How do you adjust?
12:26Where do you come from when you, when, when you get punched in the mouth or you get an
12:29injury thrown at you, Kyle Shanahan over the last year and a half has proven himself to
12:34be the best coach in this sport because of the adversity that they've faced and they continue
12:39to come at you at a high level.
12:40In my opinion, I think that you would add in Raheem Morris.
12:44And it's something that we all have shared on our show thread throughout the course of
12:48the morning where we want to give out bouquets of flowers and you have to look at John Lynch
12:53for all the little things he's done, trading for Keon White and getting Osa Odigizuwa and
12:59all the other micro moves, even Brandon cooks, you needed a veteran receiver.
13:03And I don't know how long he will contribute, but he's already contributed.
13:07And so I look even beyond Shanahan to Raheem Morris, who has come in and changed a lot.
13:13And I shared the numbers with you guys and I won't bore the audience, but they blitz more
13:17often.
13:17They already have 12 sacks.
13:20They had 20 all last year.
13:21So the pressure rate is way up.
13:24The blitz rate is way up.
13:26The sack rate is way up.
13:27And as a result, the guys in the back end and Raheem Morris is somebody who's coached the
13:32secondary his whole career.
13:33They are thriving in part because you have a Bosa-less pass rush.
13:38Michael Williams has played 24 total snaps.
13:41And yet guys like Valdez and Odigizuwa and Keon White and Grayson Halton and other lightly
13:49drafted or, you know, late round picks, they're coming in and doing big things.
13:52And what do they look like if this week or next Nick Bosa gets added to the group?
13:57Because they look great last week.
13:59That was a really good pass rush.
14:00Five sacks from five different guys.
14:02None of them drafted higher than the third round.
14:05Two of them acquired via trade.
14:07And you had five sacks without a guy named Bosa on the field.
14:10Phenomenal.
14:11Yeah.
14:12And now Bosa comes back.
14:14So what does that make Mikel Williams look like?
14:16What does that make Romello Haidt look like?
14:18What does it make Osa Odigizuwa or James Thompson Jr. or Grayson Halton, what does it do when
14:24more attention needs to be pushed toward Nick?
14:29I love what you just brought up.
14:31We're going to want to talk about that a little bit more coming up for sure.
14:34Larry in San Francisco is on the line.
14:36Hi, Larry.
14:36Thank you for calling us.
14:37What's up?
14:39All I got to say is this was the greatest week of football in my life as a 49er band.
14:45I watched the repeat Super Bowl champions, Seattle Seahawks, fall on their face.
14:51I watched the Rams, the preseason Super Bowl champions, fall on their face.
14:57And then I watched a game I haven't seen since John Gruden coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
15:07man.
15:07I watched the defense that was hitting so hard, they couldn't throw flags.
15:11Otherwise, they would have had to throw it on every single play.
15:16Larry, we've had a few of these.
15:18Larry, thanks so much.
15:19We've had a few of these, and he's getting into the kind of the minutiae of play-by-play.
15:27But I look at it also in the bigger picture of it all.
15:29The Cardinals are exactly who we thought they were.
15:32But take a moment to just sit with this.
15:35The 49ers, right?
15:37Australia against the Rams.
15:39And then the questions about would they be able to this, that, or the other in Seattle.
15:43But also add up what's happened to these teams outside of their games against the 49ers.
15:49Five weeks in, they're not just 5-0.
15:52The Seahawks have two losses, and the Niners have a road game in hand.
15:56The Rams have three losses, and the 49ers have a road game in hand.
16:00The idea that they would have this kind of a strangle on, or a path, to the division title
16:07five weeks in was unthinkable.
16:10Absolutely unthinkable five weeks ago.
16:12You could have looked at it before the start of the year and thought,
16:14you know what, 3-2, I'd take it.
16:18Because the Rams are going to go 17-0, so you won't win in Australia.
16:22And Seattle on a Sunday in that spot, that's going to be tough.
16:26And so even if you chalk that as a loss, 3-2, all right, 3-2.
16:30And then you've got Washington and Atlanta.
16:32You might be able to get to the bye mark, 5-2, based on schedule Sam and what we all
16:37think.
16:37And now you look at it as we enter into week six, and you've got Sean McVay firing kickers,
16:43blaming kickers, then firing kickers.
16:45And you've got Seattle, who, like, inexplicably, you threw the ball to your best player on third
16:51down, and he was unable to catch it.
16:53He dropped it.
16:53He dropped it.
16:54And he dropped it at home, and the Niners went in there and snatched one from you.
16:58And now you are the one that has the short week going to Denver, and that's not going
17:03to be an easy one.
17:04A lot of people giving Malik Mustafa credit for that drop.
17:08Because he popped him two plays earlier.
17:10Oh, absolutely.
17:11He popped him.
17:12He did.
17:12And I thought that that was maybe blue tent worthy, honestly.
17:15Well, I mean, he didn't, you know, like, it was a legal hit.
17:18It was a legal hit.
17:19He did not get him square.
17:21Like, there was no crown of the helmet or anything going on.
17:23He purposely went at the chest, and he got him.
17:26But, you know, he kind of needed maybe, like, a little recalibration sensation.
17:32Yeah.
17:32He didn't have time for it.
17:34And, listen, I can't draw.
17:37Thank you, Randy.
17:38I can't draw a line A to B and automatically be like, that's why he dropped the ball.
17:42But, yeah, it might have.
17:43Whether he was hearing footsteps or whether he was just, you know, he had the Tweety Bird
17:50thing going on a little bit.
17:51He was a little shaken.
17:52I don't know.
17:52I don't know.
17:53Maybe.
17:53Might have had something to do with it.
17:55Well, it wasn't an easy catch.
17:57No.
17:57It was a ball that somebody of that caliber should catch it.
18:01And I'm sure he would say the same thing.
18:02I didn't see his comments, but it was a high throw.
18:04He had to go up for it, and he didn't catch it.
18:07Yeah.
18:07And then Cooper Cup did, and he got nine yards and maybe two or two and a half feet as
18:12well.
18:13And that's a ball game.
18:14I mean, I think that when you're watching a football game, it's baked in that there are
18:19certain plays where you get mad at whoever calls the plays.
18:23Like, that's just baked in.
18:25That's the way we watch a game, right?
18:27We kind of look at it, and we're like, we get the whole x-ray vision from ahead, and it
18:34didn't work.
18:34And then you're like, why are you doing that?
18:37And in fact, we got Grandy's grades coming up in an hour and a half, and I bet we'll
18:41hear a little bit about that.
18:42Grandy, you said you were frustrated for much of the first half, correct?
18:46Right.
18:46Yeah.
18:46All right.
18:47Okay, now do McVay's play calling.
18:50Now do that.
18:51Because I would argue it's baked in that you're going to be mad at some play calls.
18:58But the ones with Kyle through five games, it's like, we're kind of nitpicking here.
19:07Well, it's because they've won.
19:09Yes.
19:09Like, the quarterback sneak on fourth and won and change.
19:13There's always going to be bad ones, but there's been so...
19:16And not only do they win, though, but the bad is being so far outweighed by the good
19:22play calls, in other words.
19:24It's being so...
