00:38I come with deep respect and I'm honored to be here on this occasion of the 110th
00:44birth anniversary of Srimati MS सुभू लक्षमी, late Srimati MS सुभू लक्षमी
00:51also very affectionately called us MS Amma
00:58when one stands to speak of Bharat Ratna MS सुभू लक्षमी
01:03words fall short and language itself looks for shelter and silence
01:09in fact similarly I feel looking at the format of the program
01:13I'd rather finish early so that listening to the grandchildren of MS Amma
01:19should be the biggest honor that we can pay for her on this 110th
01:28but the venue of today's program itself is a matter of interest and curiosity for me
01:37because named after the noted violinist Shri Mysoti Chaudaya Avru
01:46who incidentally played the violin as an accompaniment
01:51at the very first public concert in 1927
01:59of Subhalakshmi Amma and she was only 11 years old at that time
02:06and that happened in a place called Tirchirapalli
02:09with which I have great association because of my education and schooling and college
02:14and that happens to be the place where in my college
02:20I heard the last live concert of MS Subhalakshmi Amma
02:26the college had invited her and beautiful auditorium that we have
02:30she performed there and I can vividly recall
02:34but of course after that she performed a lot more concerts
02:37but for me that was the last concert live that I had heard of MS Subhalakshmi
02:46so the first concert played in Tiruchi in the Rockford Ganesh temple
02:51we are talking of Ganesh Chaturthi Des
02:55and Mysore T. Chaudaya ji performing the violin as an accompaniment for her
03:01and he praised her for her Sangeeta Shuddham
03:06so it is from that age stalwarts like Chaudaya Gavru
03:12have recognized the talent in her
03:15of course we all know that she was born in 1916 in Madurai
03:19again a place where I was born
03:21but I think I will severely object to that initial comparison
03:26which was being made outrageous
03:29not acceptable at all ma'am
03:34and her childhood was not easy at all
03:39there was no comfort or there was no choice
03:42but she just fluidly went into singing
03:46and at the age of 10
03:48even before that Rockford concert
03:50she had recorded her first song
03:54Maragadavadivam
03:55with her mother
03:56and in 1934 at the age of 18
03:59she was given the senior concert slot
04:02in the Madras Music Academy
04:04which is not obtainable normally even by stalwart artists
04:09she got it even at the age of 18
04:11hearing her
04:13the Veena Master of Karekudi Sambasivayar
04:16said
04:17you carry the Veena in your throat
04:26and the people who are talking
04:28who are commenting
04:29who are praising
04:30who are giving such wonderful credits to her
04:33are themselves great stalwarts
04:36and she is earning it even in her teens
04:41and Semmangudi Srinivasayar
04:43who was a guru
04:44and one has had
04:46even today I listen to a lot of Semmangudi and MS
04:49together singing some of the fantastic classical pieces
04:55it's a different level of an experience
04:58and all of us do enjoy
04:59and that's why we have gathered here today
05:03Semmangudi Srinivasayar
05:04who was a guru
05:05and also Rajamanik Kampillai
05:08who were great stalwarts at that time
05:11conferred on her the title
05:13Isai Vani
05:15Isai is music
05:16Vani is Saraswati
05:19her genius rested on an unforgiving intellectual discipline
05:25unbelievable
05:26those days youngsters
05:28who went into classical music
05:30or classical literature
05:31didn't shy away from rigorous practice
05:36sadhana
05:36rigor
05:39uncompromising rigor
05:40that's what leads to scholarship in any field
05:43whether even in science
06:11or mechan史
06:14orниlly
06:14or
06:14झाल झाल
06:46झाल
