Matthew Marks presents Gary Hume at 523 West 24th Street. The exhibition comprises sixteen new paintings in household enamel on aluminum panels, installed on a hand-painted mural. The works include familiar motifs such as intertwined swans, flowers, and abstracted female figures, along with imagery drawn from the murals. Hume’s approach balances figure and image in abstraction. The show also includes Hume’s first site-specific murals, executed in acrylic and charcoal on the gallery walls. They depict children’s cartoon characters and recreate murals formerly installed in a UK immigration center for asylum seekers; those originals were painted over in 2023 after being judged too welcoming. The works address themes of hope, loss, and vulnerability.Gary Hume (b. 1962) lives and works in London. He has had solo museum exhibitions and represented Britain at the 1996 São Paulo Biennial and the 1999 Venice Biennale.
