00:00Ukraine has launched what Moscow's mayor described as the largest-scale attack on the Russian
00:05capital since the war began.
00:07Sergey Sobyanin said Russian air defenses had shut down more than 1,600 drones across
00:12the country since Saturday, including around 450 heading towards Moscow.
00:18Several drones reached the oil refinery in Kapotnaya and a logistic complex in Sofino,
00:22near Moscow, causing severe fires at both sides, while another drone struck a residential
00:27building.
00:29Moscow regional authorities said two people were killed and 20 injured in attacks across
00:33the wider region.
00:34Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strikes, revealing that the operation
00:38involves FB-1 attack drones and Paleontisia missiles saying Moscow must end its brutal war
00:43and choose peace.
00:45The strikes came as Russian attacks on Ukraine continued with 138 drones on Saturday night
00:51as authorities reported deaths and damage in the Kiev and Kherson regions.
00:55The death toll from Russian strikes on the Kiev region on Saturday evening rose to four.
01:00Three people were also injured on Saturday as a result of a strike on a shopping center
01:04in Dnipro, which was completely destroyed.
01:10French President Emmanuel Macron said he looks forward to welcoming Canada's Prime Minister
01:15Mark Carney on the overseas French territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon on Sunday in a
01:20visit he says aims to turn a page between the two countries.
01:24The visit to the French Atlantic archipelago is the first by a French president since Francois
01:29Hollande in 2014 and comes weeks after US President Donald Trump posted an image on social media showing
01:36the territory covered by an American flag.
01:39The meeting with Carney comes as Canada looks to deepen its ties with the European Union amid tensions
01:45with its southern neighbor and biggest trading partner, the United States.
01:50Macron praised Canada, saying it's rich in resources, making it hugely beneficial to EU nations, noting
01:56that it should become one of the bloc's key trading partners over the coming years.
02:01Carney was in France earlier this week where he addressed the European Parliament after Commissioned
02:06President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled ambitions in making Canada the EU's first ever associate
02:11member.
02:12Located just 20 kilometers off of Canada's Newfoundland coast, French officials said Macron's trip would
02:18underscore France's sovereignty over the islands, while also highlighting its close relationship
02:23with Canada.
02:29Germans are voting on Sunday in two state elections where far-right and far-left gains could send
02:34fresh shockwaves through Berlin and rock the government of embattled Chancellor Friedrich
02:38Mertz.
02:40Millions of voters are eligible to cast their ballots in Berlin, where Mertz's Christian Democratic
02:45Union is vying to hold on to power and a separate election taking place in Mecklenburg-Western
02:50Pomerania.
02:52Housing, rent prices, transport and public safety are among the main issues shaping the election
02:58campaign in the capital.
02:59The race in Mecklenburg, which locals call Meckpalm, is also closely contested where the
03:05CDU is fighting to simply stay in state parliament.
03:10Mertz has cleared his schedule to monitor the election results in an emergency meeting he
03:14convened with his CDU colleagues and even cancelled plans to attend the UN General Assembly in New
03:20York.
03:21Polls suggest the far-right AFD, which dealt a crucial defeat to the CDU two weeks ago in
03:27state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, will make some gains, though they're unlikely to come
03:32within reach of power in either state.
03:37Russians voted on Sunday in the third and final day of tightly controlled parliamentary elections,
03:41with Vladimir Putin's United Russia Party widely expected to retain its dominance.
03:45The vote fills all 450 seats in the state Duma and is the first parliamentary election since
03:51Russia launched its full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022.
03:55However, there is little genuine opposition.
03:58The anti-war Yabloko Party was barred from running its nationwide list by Russia's Supreme Court,
04:03while the other main parties on the ballot all support Putin and the war.
04:07Most of Putin's prominent political opponents are now imprisoned, in exile or dead.
04:12The election has also been overshadowed by fears that another military mobilization could follow
04:17the vote. Russia called up 300,000 reservists in 2022, triggering a large exodus of draft-aged men.
04:26Putin has repeatedly denied plans for another mobilization. The vote also comes as Ukrainian
04:31drone strikes increasingly bring the effects of the war deeper into Russia.
04:36The turnout has been announced by the Central Election Commission as a little over 50 percent.
04:41Russia's electoral chief also claimed that there had been over 1,000 waves of DDoS cyberattacks
04:46targeting election infrastructure in recent days without saying who was responsible.
