01:18you guys will get to know tj a little bit in this episode and throughout the season but before that

01:23i

01:23just want to give you a bit of an overview of what we're looking at five seasons is quite a

01:28lot to be

01:28fair but one of the things we haven't tackled head-on in past seasons is action and we no longer

01:36just know that we're in crisis and that something needs to change in this season we're focused on

01:41building those systems financing those solutions empowering people how does climate action

01:47solutions ideas turn into real change so our core theme this season is implementing and innovating

01:54and a lot of the guests that we're talking to are people that can help us understand how we shape

02:00a

02:01cleaner and more equitable future that's why i've got tj with me because tj's background is really

02:06going to help on this one so tj do you want to tell people who you are no i will

02:10try i will try

02:10no very very happy to be um you know your your partner hosts so just to explain myself my name

02:18is tj omujamala uh i run a business called afri bond where we focus on connecting people to african

02:24investment opportunities um but i've done all sorts of roles in my career so far my early career so

02:31i've worked in energy in the past i've worked for power stations i've worked in gas and on the

02:37commercial side too um so when we talked about sustainability i found that quite interesting

02:43because there's so many different facets and ways that you can take routes towards it yeah as well

02:49as that i've focused on investment um in terms of investment relations connecting investors to funds

02:54and to business opportunities too as well as that tilt towards africa which we're focusing on

03:00with afri bond so uh when victoria and the team at angelics basically said look there's some

03:06interesting people to speak to across all sorts and i'm sure we'll get into it real estate

03:11across the consultancy work sustainability and more just that micro stage towards the people that

03:18some of these consultants are helping i thought why not it could be interesting and there'll definitely be a

03:23lot for me and the audience alone yeah definitely and i think we've already started learning um before

03:30we get into that i mean from your background and the insights that you have what would you say

03:35it means when we're saying implementing and innovating what does that actually mean

03:40yeah for me it's um improving and making a greater change so i always say that people especially in the

03:48world that we live in and you'll you're likely to hear in the podcast that we do in the interviews

03:54they talk about ai and the change that people are unusually scared they're scared to change and

04:00they're scared with some of the effects that technology can have in the 1900s with the um the increase in

04:09terms of cars being used we saw it even earlier with the industrial revolution and now i do think it's

04:15important to look about how changes are arising and some of the impacts we'll make positively but also

04:20negative too so for me when it comes to that kind of innovation and that impact it's about making

04:28sure that we're making a change but a positive change towards society but also the goods and services

04:34that we're producing um across the world um so yeah that's that's the main aim and we'll aim to talk

04:41some of the best yeah definitely and i think i've said on this podcast before but one of the reasons

04:47we call it the just transition and moving into you know a cleaner world isn't overnight is because

04:53you have to bring people along you can't just implement something and not teach people how to use

04:58that thing that you've implemented but you also can't innovate without explaining the point of the

05:03innovation um and taking into account context of where that's happening and the people that are

05:07going to be affected by it and even if the goal you know you can't just say trust me where

05:12i want

05:12this one yeah no transparency is key right it's um it's it's like i said bringing people together

05:19where i think in the past there's been a lot of times where we've had these amazing innovations but

05:25a lot of the time the little guy or the person that doesn't always understand it is left behind

05:31yeah um so there's there's got so many different guests that we're in the house or if it's in real

05:36estate where they talk about one of the big things that i hope we get into quite a bit is

05:41building an

05:42ecosystem where everyone benefits and there's going to be a few different guests that are going to be

05:47focusing on building ecosystems and improving as a whole and so yeah very interested in learning how

05:53they do that definitely and i think one of the things when we say ecosystem that i really want to

05:59bring down to earth is that

06:01things don't function in silos so a lot of times in sustainability in this space um you can either

06:07get really technical or very social and not bridge that gap between all the things we're talking about

06:13you know like when we explore finance infrastructure technology business models all the systems behind the

06:20transition it always goes back to people and when that's the focus you can always bring back all these

06:26topics instead of talking about them in these silos which is where you start losing that implementation

06:32and innovation thing that you want to do right yeah no no you're right you're right so and with it

06:40look i

06:41kind of in terms of the pillars of the people that we're speaking to um so far that we're gonna

06:47have

06:48in this season we talk about kind of the accountability and governance with a couple of the guests that we

06:52have

06:53yeah and we're looking into energy there's people that are focused just straight on clean energy

06:58there's others that are focused on that structural change and so when it comes to some of the silos and

07:04just putting people in certain different zones and certain different verticals um there's so many ways that

07:11we can go about it so yeah in terms of the the questions that we could ask yeah that should

07:18be that

07:18should be the thing that's going to resonate with me the most definitely i think it's a it's going to

07:22be

07:22a very varied season because we're kind of picking from everywhere to try to bring it together

07:28is there a question no no no i was going to say that but that's what makes us the season

07:34great

07:34right there's a variety there's um a few different episodes that i think will kind of fit you will you

07:41would expect a route that will that we can go down to definitely like i said one day we'll be

07:46talking

07:46about clean energy the other days we'll be talking maybe about mental health um and i think that's a good

07:52way to get a variety of different audiences to come a variety of different audiences just to

07:57be entertained yeah definitely and i'm hoping the season resonates as every conversation kind of

08:03builds into the ecosystem they're not we're not having separate conversations that you know are

08:08disconnected from each other but within the space that we work in it's so all-encompassing

08:13that you know there's so much that we can talk about and so many people that are willing to

08:18sit down with us for an hour and have those chats definitely definitely so it's great is there a

08:24question or a topic specifically that you're coming into this season wanting to know more about

08:30yeah well i um as a person you know that is focusing on african ecosystems and african investment

08:38uh we're definitely going to have a conversation with someone that focuses on clean energy and solar

08:42energy and batteries in particular so i always love to see the contrast about with nigeria right now

08:51one of the big talking points is oil refineries and gas and we have a person that is really trying

08:59to you know pioneer a lot of the work in terms of clean energy so i'd love to see that

09:04that contrast

09:04between the two and i think it's fascinating to ask as well as just the work that uh this person

09:10is

09:10doing in particular in um yeah across climate change and across nigeria and across just africa

09:15in general yeah also as well as a person that's that's looked into real estate in the in the past

09:22um we're going to be interviewing a couple people that do quite a good work in terms of building

09:28communities building parks building just and improving real estate complexes yeah so a lot of the time

09:36people are have maybe a negative perception when it comes to investors funds coming in taking over

09:42a community um because you know the usual stereotypes is that evil corporations don't really have what's

09:51best for us there so yeah they have that they talk about the community and trying to improve it as

09:57well as improving um in terms of the real estate sector in terms of improving that real estate area

10:03but at the same time still trying to make a profit so i'm definitely going to ask them about how

10:08they

10:09balance that all yeah and yeah so those are probably the two big ones but there's there's

10:13others that i'm just as interested into i swear yeah there's going to be a lot of balancing

10:20this season because i think a lot of the topics could fully swing one way and i'm hoping the audience

10:27notices the balance that is trying to be striked here but if not you know the season four the

10:33season five recap will hopefully help yeah yeah definitely no uh that that will be the big one

10:39where once we've gone through all the different guests and all the different episodes we'll do a

10:44big recap yeah yeah maybe i can i'll leave it to you i'll ask you a few of the questions

10:49but then

10:50i'll um i'll kind of give my conclusions too so that one too and i guess throughout the season

10:57we'll be speaking you know with innovators investors entrepreneurs leaders policymakers

11:02we're talking with people that are working directly in communities as well and one of the

11:07things that has led us to want to do this is because in our own organization tangelic we've

11:14started deployment on our sunrise spectrum initiative which you can read more about

11:18untouchellic life.org but it's been you know a couple years of us getting the ecosystem and the

11:24infrastructure and the systems put together and now we're in deployment we're in that action phase

11:30and that really piqued our interest as a team because we were like right okay we're in that phase now

11:35so we want to know how other people either made it to that phase or starting on that phase

11:39and when you're implementing or you know innovating it's not just you and the person with the idea but

11:45it's all the people around you you know who's going to give you the money to do that who what

11:49policies do you have to influence for things to happen and are there collaborations and partnerships

11:54that you have to do to reach the right communities and the right people so a lot of this comes

12:00to an

12:01extent from our own interest as a as an organization but also we understand that this is how our ecosystem

12:09works and we just want to shed a bit of light into that on all the moving parts around um

12:14an idea

12:15and how you make it actually work and happen yeah yeah and look the in terms of marketing and just

12:21showcasing yourself whether your person with your company if you're looking to grow it's it's key you

12:27have to get yourself out there and it's it's beneficial to tangelic and it's beneficial to the

12:33guests that we have on um of course um i know they're interested in just having a conversation but

12:38they want as well to showcase their opportunity to the world whether it's the consultancy advice that

12:46they give whether it's sustainability or just improve the company in terms of investor readiness

12:51and business readiness whether it's the real estate companies that i talked about before whether it's the

12:57companies that are creating solar panels and solar products all that everyone has some sort of

13:04opportunity that they want to showcase as well as just talking about the the trends that are going

13:09across whether it's africa whether it's in america nice thing is we have guests across the world and

13:15that we're going to be interviewing so um yeah it's important to to do so but it's important

13:21as it talks to help those conversations too definitely and one of the things that i really like about

13:27that we've been doing for these past seasons is we're learning a lot so obviously every solution

13:33won't fit every context there's a lot of things and insights that you learn from talking to people

13:39that are doing similar work to you where you're like oh okay maybe this adapted to within the context

13:44i work in will be helpful and i'm hoping some of these conversations for anyone listening might be

13:49useful in that way where you're learning something and insight kind of resonates with you

13:53and you can sort of adapt it to the context you're working in

13:57yeah i i think the the nice thing about the the guests that we have is that they have

14:03so much experience right some of the people who have been in the space for for 20 30 years and

14:08even

14:08more um when you're in that space for a while and from what we've seen they have been very successful

14:15in some of the work that they do there's going to be so much experience and so much knowledge that

14:19they'll pass on to us and hopefully to the audience that they can use in their own work in their

14:24in their own activities too um so yeah as well as the the marketing that we just talked about that

14:31companies need to do sure that people gain a lot of useful ideas and concepts that maybe they didn't

14:38have already yeah definitely and in the point of resources um you all might remember but as a reminder

15:15more nerdy

15:15some of the technical sides of of their work whether it's the revenues the shares the investors

15:21they're reaching um definitely a good way to go into it yeah and i guess tj you've been within an

15:29ecosystem already for a while have you seen any big gaps between the different parts of the ecosystem

15:35that you're interested in sort of exploring yeah so i think a lot of the time there can be

15:44misinformation um i'll talk about two points maybe the misinformation that uh are in certain markets

15:50so in particular in energy a lot of the time you'll hear people say just speaking of africa and also

15:57asia they perceive a lot of sunlight why don't they just have solar panels everywhere um and there's

16:05just that gap where solar panels are expensive also who has the who controls the raw materials for this

16:10is really important in terms of production logistics is very important too

16:15and luckily we'll have some guests that can go into more detail there so this misinformation always

16:21key um it's also about um who's producing the final products usually leads to um people that are

16:29basically controlling the market um and that kind of leads to the the original question too so

16:34um there's there's definitely some guests that can focus on this um but those are probably the two

16:40big things in especially the africa and the ecosystem but the ecosystems in general that people

16:45probably need to focus on more yeah definitely yeah and if you can spot when that episode comes

16:52through and when we're talking about it you'll see tj will be very very happy yeah you'll see a smile

17:10well we're really excited about season five um and i just want to leave everyone with one question as we

17:16kick off what does it take to turn climate ambition into action and i think all of us in this

17:22place

17:22we have an idea we have some ambitions in the climate space sustainability

17:27how we wish energy systems worked how we wish things were deployed the kind of innovations we

17:32want to see how we wish things moved a bit quicker sometimes in terms of policy but what does it

17:39actually

17:39take to do that and that's what a lot of our guests are going to help us understand understand the

17:45behind the scenes but also we have a lot of the solutions and a lot of the ideas already so

17:50how do we

17:51get them rolled out and and doing something you know and affecting communities so if you're interested

17:58in climate finance energy transition innovation entrepreneurship just creating a more equitable
