01:13excited about it we weren't sure friday was kind of up in the air if we were going to get

01:16hours together yeah so i'm glad i'm glad we've got today we've got tons of nfl stuff to talk about
01:21should we start with the afc stuff i think that'd be a good starting point it feels like that
01:26the afc we had this conversation whether it was on saturdays on our podcast next gen sports talk if
01:32you want to check that out uh me and cali have our own little pod we're doing we talked about
01:38how
01:38this afc looks like it's going to be a dog fight and there's good how many good teams are there
01:44baltimore's good jacksonville's good denver's good uh-huh kansas city's good the the bangles are good
01:50the bills are good the everybody's good and i don't know does everybody stink i think week one
01:59we talked about preparedness a lot and it seemed like a lot of teams were unprepared for what they
02:03were expecting and here we are now and i think everyone got prepared and studied up and this week
02:11shut everything down all of a sudden we're back to normal standard nfl operating procedure outside of
02:15the bills are the only team that's really looked consistent from week one to week two the ravens i
02:20thought were the only team that could stack up against the bills what's happened there already
02:24they're at the bottom of the blender the saints beat them got sketchy fast so i think there's a lot
02:29of change and it's a week-to-week league we say it every year and it's takes about four weeks
02:34for me
02:35to really pinpoint where these teams end up in the power rankings if you will right of course i mean
02:41we're talking about the chargers charger the bills bills from time to time people like we could be
02:45i don't want to i'm knocking on wood as i'm saying all of this but we can't rule out the
02:49possibility of
02:50a real billsy loss in the next couple of weeks no and they look like they have the last few
02:55years and
02:55it just happens sometimes right it does and it's something that this league is so volatile and it's so
03:02there's so few games that every result feels so crucial and and so informative because you only see
03:09these teams play 16 17 18 times you know whatever depending on playoffs and all that you only see
03:16them a handful of times and when you're trying to dive into analysis on a on a team of and
03:23predicting
03:24what can happen a small sample size is difficult to project and right now we're working with two games
03:29for every team but two in the two that are playing tonight and the rams and the giants and i
03:35was just
03:36expecting to feel like there were more teams that i felt were on the bills level than there are right
03:42now i mean cincinnati let's start with cincinnati and give us you know if you've got a team you want

03:55lived up to your expectations is it sort of falling short is there anybody you're worried about anybody
04:00you're surprised is looking as poor as they are i'm going to say aside from the chargers because
04:04everybody thinks the yeah people could have bet a lot of money on that going that way how many
04:09survivor pools died in week one with the with the upset for the cardinals to the chargers sure um so

04:21get into this this afc picture is really interesting the bangles is where i would like to start here i

04:27think i'm i'm scared about the bangles probably more than any other team right now because i know they
04:34did not exactly go nuclear yesterday against the the houston texans they won 20 to 6 burrow had a
04:42good day of uh you know not not nothing out of the ordinary for him jamar chase made an unbelievable
04:50catch in the game did so you got to see him sort of wake up for the first time which
04:53i think was
04:54probably pretty significant for them like i said burrow was 20 for 31 for 207 yards and two
04:59touchdowns he took five sacks against that defensive line of the texans which is big but they just they
05:06look to be improved on the defensive side of the ball and and i have faith in that offense becoming
05:12more than that and that that that team with that schedule scares me yeah i mean they have the fourth
05:18place schedule they're going to just or maybe not fourth place it was it's easier than first place
05:23without question and they're able to just kind of go on a run it's really for them the last couple
05:28of years at least for me i i feel like looking back to those bangles teams that beat the bills
05:33of even
05:33before the demar hamlin incident that happened that game they're they're doing what the bills have been
05:40doing in these last couple of games they win the coin toss they elect to receive they're going to go
05:44down and just put up points on you their defense is solid at that point in time still it they
05:49were
05:49scary when they had a defense the last few years joe burrow the year allen wins the mvp there's a
05:54big case for joe burrow to win the mvp but you know what the wins and losses aren't there because
05:58their defense is letting games go away joe burrow is one of the best fantasy quarterbacks you could
06:02have and it meant nothing because the defense was just allowing games to slip away from him so at this
06:10point if they're showing a semblance of a defense that they had a few years ago i think that immediately
06:15puts them on notice a little bit the league on notice especially bills fans and bills mafia all
06:21of that because that's a team you're gonna see in the postseason if they do get there with a good
06:26defense and they're not it's not the bangles last season they came in well below 500 when christian
06:33benford got the pick six and all of that right they were they were fighting for their lives in that
06:37game yeah they were they weren't even i guess looking at a playoff spot with all seriousness they
06:42were they were on the outside looking in and i don't think the bangles defense they have this
06:47season is going to allow them to be in that position again yeah i think that that they have
06:53the pieces on paper right better a hundred percent yeah i know they lost hendrickson but dexter dexter
07:00lawrence is a really solid interior piece yeah don't call him sexy dexy for nothing one of the best in
07:05the league yeah and you know this texans defense is amazing and i know that the bills did what they
07:14did in week one and put up 40 plus on that team but a 20 to 6 win for the
07:19bangles they just didn't
07:20need any more than that the bills needed to keep scoring because the the texans scored and so game
07:26script i think plays a little bit of a role in there but i am i am glad to see
07:30that the bills were able
07:31to double the bangles offensive output on the same defense with you know their feet under them a
07:36little better yeah so i'm very curious about where where they sort of head from here they're they're
07:42coming up on on some some games here where they're gonna come up on who have they got oh why

07:48so far back here we go they're coming back to the preseason i've been dealing yes stealers stealers next
07:53week then they've got the jags and then the dolphins like that two and one there if the jags can

08:04falcons have looked horrible that's their next game then they play the stealers again who look
08:09terrible i mean you say the titans are a win i i gotta be honest with you i'm not super

08:15them by any means but also look what they just did to philadelphia they took them down to the wire

08:19philly's nothing to scoff at either so that game could go 50 50 if they figured some things out but
08:24even if we want to all right we'll say that's 50 50 right then you get to the commanders who

08:28likely be without jayden daniels who dislocated his elbow yesterday which was gruesome and
08:33terrifying i watched it for the first time about an hour ago i thought i avoided it and it popped
08:38right up in the timeline it was disgusting not fun and then they play the saints and then they play
08:42the browns they play the chiefs all right then the panthers who have been putting out points but does
08:48how legit do we think the panthers are then they've got the colts the ravens again and the browns again
08:54it is a i mean a soft ball and a half of a schedule and they are probably the number

09:02keeping an eye on for the the one seed right now yeah i think i would agree yeah they just

09:08to me they have to be nobody else has looked consistent enough for me to be worried about
09:13it yet the chiefs i think that's the team i would i would push back a little bit on that

09:17going to go next chiefs looked they looked good last night and mahomes looked back and that that
09:22to me is a big thing yeah and their defense they still have chris jones i know he's older their
09:26defense is not as great as it has been in years past i'll give i'll give the league that right

09:33going to be able to put some points up potentially but if mahomes post surgery is able to do consistently
09:39what he did last night and even in week one he was serviceable to the point where they won
09:43if they can play different styles of games like that and travis kelsey can somehow still
09:48bumble his way down a field i still am astonished by it because he doesn't look like he should be
09:52able to do what he used to do anymore yeah but if mahomes is back that immediately is a very
09:58scary
09:59thing because it last night after that game there are just dreams about bill's chiefs afc championship
10:07now yeah and they're more vivid and lucid than they have been in the last three years the
10:13old guard and who we're talking about today the bangles and the chiefs right and then the ravens
10:18you can sprinkle them in there which is but the same that that was the four yeah in the afc

10:23look where we're back at we're back there after a year off all all roads led are looking to be
10:29leading back right now we don't we're not 100 sure how that ends up going but we're in week two

10:33the end of the day this is all this could all be moot by next week if these teams look

10:38something happens absolutely i think with the chiefs last night the mahomes being you know he
10:44threw for 382 yards with 32 of 47 three touchdowns he looked like he was dealing oh yeah old school
10:51and if they get what they got out of walker last night again who had 24 carries for 117
10:58he he can give them the run game they never had that's the scariest thing about them that that is
11:03where i start running into like all right they've now crept back up my leaderboard to start the year
11:08i was i was down on the chiefs i i thought they have not looked right for a few years

11:15they don't have the weapons that they need kelsey's another year older and and you just can't count on
11:21that rasheed rice is to me a very interesting player but i don't know that he should be a number
11:27one ride receiver on a super bowl contending team no and you didn't know how his rehab from his injury
11:31was going to go in jail right so there was a lot going on for him in the offseason and
11:36the defense
11:36lost an all pro in trent mcduffie and so i had big questions about the chiefs coming in and and

11:43so far have passed with flying colors i do still to me i need to see more yeah over a
11:50longer time
11:50because to me they've been bad bad for a couple years now and i i need you to prove to
11:56me that you're
11:57you're able to find your way up out of that yeah and i mean we've picked division winners and all
12:02that on the other things we've done in sports talk saturday a few weeks ago i remember and we
12:06picked the chargers to win that division that's not looking great as of right now so we had a
12:12couple chiefs picks in there but realistically that division i feel like is the wild west because
12:18if denver also kind of wakes up at some point because they i mean to me they're asleep at the
12:23wheel a little bit they don't look how they didn't look great last night but they were they
12:27were able to get they found a win yeah but in jalen waddle kind of woke up but that division
12:32i think
12:32if vegas makes themselves chippy kind of how we talk about the jets being chippy with kirk cousins and
12:38maybe stealing wins late in the season you need for playoff seating that could get really interesting
12:43for that afc west i think i agree i agree i think it's a it's a very interesting conference right

12:49they've got there's good teams that look bad and there's bad teams that look good and it's it's all
12:55up in the air so we got a lot to look out for in that way but we are going

13:12doing today doing good steven good um so as far as the bills and the afc now looking at yesterday
13:21uh at first two weeks as a matter of fact now i'm cautiously optimistic now i'm i'm all gung-ho

13:29i've been a hardcore bills fan since the mid to late 60s so i've been in this thing for a
13:35long time
13:35grew up in buffalo and uh you know the thing is is that last year they went four and oh
13:43now i realize
13:44this is a a different team this year for sure but the thing is after the four games they started

13:51on a downhill slide to the point where okay keon coleman came into question and all the mess with
13:57him then people are like well they don't have any wide receivers and then it's like what's going on
14:03with josh allen he's not on his game if you remember that that was last season so you know
14:08night and day with the offense um my concern is the defense because now the line is great it's the
14:17secondary as you guys know so if and i know they're they're all rather young defense they've got a
14:24what they're calling a rookie defensive coordinator and jim leonard so i believe they will come around
14:29they're going to step it up play much better benford in particular uh and max harrison as well
14:36but the thing is as far as looking at the entire afc um i'm watching you know you guys were
14:43talking
14:44about cincinnati and then of course kansas city and i can see all the fans they're going yeah casey and
14:50the homes is back well time will tell because that game last night uh there was a lot of things
14:57that
14:57indy did to shoot themselves in the foot where they could have won that game so the thing is
15:03i think with the entire afc you know afc right now um you know the what i call the patsy
15:10rots i'm not
15:11impressed with them may doesn't look that good uh and then of course aj brown's out now for a while
15:18so the thing is overall i see the bills being the number one team in the afc and on the
15:25trajectory
15:25what i'm looking for is uh you know the rams don't look that good now so if the bills can

15:32into la at five and oh which is very possible and then win that game so they go into the
15:39buy at six
15:40and oh watch out the rest of the opponents for the bills because there's no stopping them at that
15:46point so um you know but i i see the bills as the number one team in the afc steven

15:53has yet to decide if that's the case but in my perspective they are the number one team and
16:00the deciding factor on that is number 17 josh allen nobody else has him yep and as long as he
16:07stays
16:07healthy and the offensive line keeps doing what they're doing and of course cook he's right in
16:12there and then dalton kincaid man i i expect these guys i wouldn't be a bit surprised this coming sunday
16:19if the bills score 50 points i think yeah i i think it's definitely they look to be the most
16:28consistent and generally favored number one team in the afc right now i know it is early and again
16:35this is the thing in september that historically happens nick wright isn't all that wrong right
16:39and that needs to be acknowledged but it doesn't need to take away from the fact that they look great
16:45and that they look different and that they feel like they have a different energy about them and a
16:52different belief in them because i think of all the offseason changes that we've you know we've talked
16:58about all all offseason long everything that comes with that i think when you're able to have success
17:05like this it's more meaningful than if everything was the status quo because the status quo was always
17:11you're great and you're going to win a bunch of games championship caliber all of that right and
17:16you changed enough this offseason that i think it would have been valid to be concerned about whether
17:21that was still going to be the case obviously they still always had allen and that was always going
17:26to be the biggest determining factor in whether they won or lost football games but they removed a
17:32figurehead of stability and a a man that represented a standard in this city in sean mcdermott
17:39and anytime you do that it's a risk especially for a first-time head coach who's never done the job
17:45we heard sal earlier when he was talking about aaron glenn mentioned there is a certain thing that
17:51nfl head coaches need to have there's a there's a gene that you need to be wired a little differently
17:56than you do to just be a coordinator you can be a great coordinator and be a horrible head coach
18:01and we're seeing that we've seen that play out hundreds of times throughout the history of the nfl
18:06josh mcdaniels lane kiffin all right yeah those guys cannot do everything that is required and i
18:13think if you had questions about joe brady coming into the year about whether he could that's perfectly
18:18valid but that means that when he answers the questions through through two weeks like he has
18:25so far that you should give him correct you know proper praise and you should acknowledge that you
18:31all right he is he is at the very least following in the footsteps of sean mcdermott he's he's found

18:37way to get this team ready early in the season and has them dominating i think alan's the biggest piece
18:42of as to why that's able to happen of course i mean you you mentioned mcdermott is that pillar of
18:47consistency i agree he's what the culture all of that but also alan is that he is the the statue

18:56was built of that he's he's the walking example so if he carries over a lot of that's going to

19:02over and i know a lot of the questions were at the beginning oh is this going to be a

19:06we're going to see what happened in miami with mike mcdaniel no he's answered those questions
19:11throughout preseason and training camp and he's answering a lot of questions through the first
19:14couple weeks of the season and i i agree with you some guys you know just aren't made for it

19:20think you would have seen something already that's pretty jarring if he wasn't made for it i think so too
19:25i think that there are there's a million opportunities within a game within a press
19:29conference even to step in it and he has done well to avoid that thus far and i'm it hasn't
19:36gotten
19:36you know he hasn't lost the game yet it hasn't gotten tough yet and so there that those tests
19:42will come and he will have to answer those questions as well and and that's going to be a
19:47very i i can't i don't want the bills to lose a game i'd love for them to go undefeated
19:52but i can't
19:53wait to see what he sounds like in a postgame presser after he loses a game or a couple even
19:57right you don't want him to lose a couple but what is one is one thing multiple is another what

20:01it look like when things get dicey here because stuff will get dicey there's so much pressure
20:07around this organization that it's impossible to avoid something getting sketchy and a hard question
20:15being asked or an emotional moment needing to be met and that is going to be to me the next

21:20rate is pretty good but the actual pressure rate is toward the bottom of the league um i just think
21:27they need to step that up because it's uh you know everything looks great because josh allen's
21:32carrying a load right now him and his offense but what's going to happen when josh and them have a

21:36day and can we survive a bad day from josh in that office but it's going to happen it definitely

21:45happen it's unavoidable everybody's got bad days yeah i listen at the end of the day we can look back
21:53at those games what was the result they won handily in both of them right i know and what did
21:58the defense
21:59do in that first game they put an end to that drive with an exclamation point and you won the

22:04because of that you didn't allow them the chance to get the field goal or even drive into the end
22:09zone for a touchdown there was nothing there was nothing you could have done or asked more from
22:14sure those statistics you mentioned yeah that'll come as the season goes i think jim leonard has
22:20said multiple times that this off this defense is going to be kind of a work in progress as the
22:26season goes on you can't expect them to be great right out of the gate this is your you have
22:31transition players from mcdermott scheme to this scheme couple have already shined
22:37deon walker uh greg russo right like you have these guys ed oliver was fine before his injury
22:44it's going to take some guys some time in the secondary especially it's very different
22:48and mcdermott that was the one thing you could always credit him for he was the defensive back
22:52whisperer jim leonard might just not be that it might not be as easy to understand or digest
22:56right so it might take some time i'm just not i'm not here i'm not here for the point of

23:02the offense is gonna have a bad day and they're gonna lose a game because of that right i get

23:06that's a very real thing you can say that wait until it happens don't start talking about it before
23:12it even happens i i well i i think it's it's fine to have the conversation i just don't but

23:17this offense to me doesn't scream we're gonna have a down james cook allen scores five touchdowns
23:23what does james cook do scores a touchdown rushes for 135 yards yeah there's not a phase of this
23:27offense that doesn't sound like it's going to just work for me i agree but they're not going to score
23:3140 every week no i i don't disagree not it's not going to happen and and you can't expect that

23:37ask that the best teams in the league they'd love to touch 30 a week on average and the reality

23:43that they're scoring 10 more than that and they're giving up more than that and that that is a valid
23:49concern as much as you can point to the offense as being a juggernaut which it is it's undeniable
23:55but they will have a game where they need their defense to give up less than 30 points sure and
