Premier says DV is ‘urgent emergency’ as three NSW women allegedly murdered in 24 hours

The New South Wales premier says domestic violence is a growing crisis that requires immediate and critical action. New South Wales Police have called on the state government to employ every resource available after a spate of killings over the weekend. Chris Minns has told the ABC a concerted approach from all levels of society is needed to tackle family violence.

00:02The number of violent crimes against often innocent people, innocent family members is

00:08hugely distressing. It's an urgent emergency for our state and we need to throw everything

00:14we possibly can at it. I mean, we have in the past two years massively increased our

00:20funding for domestic and family violence. We've toughened the bail laws. We've ensured

00:26that magistrates make the decision about whether someone gets bail. For the first time ever

00:31in New South Wales, one third of Remandees in our prison are facing serious domestic violence

00:36offences and we've increased the minimum time in prison for an intimate partner murder from

00:4320 years to 25 years. But notwithstanding those changes, we are still seeing horrible violent

00:49crimes in our community. It's hugely distressing. We can't go numb to it, however. Everything,

00:54this isn't just a government issue. Civic society needs to stand up and do everything

01:00we possibly can to confront these violent, evil behaviours in our society.
