00:00He died in January using VAD and now, nine months later, I have strangely happy memories.
00:10I often think back to the last day when we were so prepared.
00:14My two sons, Rob and Ben, were there with me.
00:17There was no rush.
00:20The boys and I were sitting around the bed having a wonderful reminisce about funny things
00:27that had happened together as a family.
00:30The coordinator came in and saw that we were laughing and said, did we want more time?
00:35So there's no rushing or pushing or anything like that.
00:39But Robert said, no, no, he said, this is right, the time has come.
00:44And so he took the, what he called hemlock, he took the glass and we lifted our sherry glasses
00:55because we'd been told he needed something sweet to follow.
00:59And he said, it's been grand.
01:01And he drank and we lifted our glasses and drank sherry.
01:04And soon his eyes closed with a sort of smile on his face.
01:09And that's my memory, nine months later, sometimes in the middle of the night when I can't sleep.
01:14I think of that, not with sadness, but with, yes, I suppose sadness because he's gone and he's not beside
01:23me in the bed.
01:24But it was, should I say, it was a calming, pleasant experience.
01:32And that's my recollection of that day at 11 o'clock.
01:36It was calming.
01:38And afterwards, when the doctor came in and pronounced he'd gone, we cried, but it was with relief because he'd
01:45been suffering so much.
01:47And I just now have happy memories.
01:50And I just now have happy memories.
01:56I just now have happy memories.
