Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir says Malaysia has strong research and innovation potential but needs greater confidence, stronger industry partnerships and faster execution to turn university research into market-ready solutions.

Speaking at the University Research and Innovation Investment Summit (Uriis) 2026 on Tuesday (Sept 22), Zambry said more than 500 matched patents worth over RM2bil are recorded on the Malaysian R&D Commercialisation Portal, showing that the challenge is commercialising ideas rather than a lack of talent or research.

00:00Today, the Malaysian R&D commercialization portal records more than 500 match patents valued at over 2 billion ringgit, with
00:14more than 120 active missions.
00:18This shows that Malaysia does not like ideas or talent.
00:24What we need is confidence, speed, partnership and execution.
00:30We must shorten the journey from research to market, laboratory to industry, and discovery to impact.
00:39To our researchers, my message is simple.
00:45Do not be afraid to take your research beyond laboratory.
00:50Understand the market.
00:52Talk to industry.
00:54Find partners.
00:55And ask ourselves, who can use this technology?
01:02What problem does it solve?
01:06And can it be scaled?
01:09Research cannot end with a publication alone.
01:14Innovation cannot end with a pattern.
01:17A prototype cannot remain in the laboratory.
01:22A discovery must become a solution.
01:27A prototype must become a product.
01:31And an idea must become an opportunity.
01:35To our industry partners, I have also a question for you.
01:40How can we build greater confidence in Malaysian research?
01:47Before looking abroad for technology and solutions, look at what our universities can offer.
01:56Do not come to our universities only when you need graduates.
02:02Come with your problems.
02:04Come with your challenges.
02:06Let our researchers work with you to identify problems, develop solutions, test technologies, and create pathways to market.
02:19At the same time, our universities must become more agile.
02:25We cannot allow good ideas to be trapped by slow decisions, unnecessary bureaucracies, or institutional boundaries.
02:37And to our investors, there are opportunities within our universities.
02:44Look at our researchers not only as academics, but as innovators, entrepreneurs, and potential business partners.
02:53Every promising innovations need someone prepared to say, we will test it, we will use it, we will invest in
03:04it.
03:04Ladies and gentlemen, this is what URIS is designed to do.
03:09Bring universities, researchers, industrial investors, startups, and policymakers together under one roof.
03:16Over these three days, URIS will cover at least nine strategic sectors, including food security, healthcare, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, advanced
03:29manufacturing, green technology, mobility, defense, and biodiversity.
03:34But URIS cannot become another conference where we meet, deliver speeches, open booths, exchange business cards, and then go home.
03:46The success of URIS must be measured by what happens after this summit.
03:55We want investment secured, technologies licensed, pilot projects launched, partnerships formed, and solutions brought to market.
04:06We want Malaysian technologies to be tested, adopted, invested, and scaled.
04:12And most importantly, innovation must improve life.
04:18It must benefit our industries and businesses, but also our farmers, rural communities, healthcare providers, and ordinary Malaysian.
04:26The true values of innovation is the problems it solves, the opportunity it creates, and the life it improves.
04:33...industry experience closer to students through industrial expertise, technology, shared facilities, and collaborative research.
04:40Ladies and gentlemen, please pay attention to the future.
