00:00That was Jay Gruden on the show yesterday.
00:02Welcome back, Grant and Danny on the fan.
00:05Question for you guys is,
00:07on the other side of getting this elbow saga fixed and sorted out,
00:13can Jaden Daniels become a durable, trustworthy, available,
00:17week in and week out starter?
00:20800-636-1067.
00:23What gives you confidence that instead of home being just over that mountain,
00:27Homer Bound style, with Shadow and company?
00:30What gives you confidence that durability is just over this recovery?
00:35I don't have any right now.
00:37Right now it feels bleak to me.
00:40Because if it's not one thing, it's the next thing.
00:43My only, the only kind of thing of scenario I've talked myself into
00:48over my breakfast cereal as I'm contemplating things,
00:51looking out the window like a student art film as it's rainy and cold outside
00:54here in September, is this elbow thing is the thing.
00:59And if it gets surgically repaired in the offseason or whatever has to happen,
01:04these freak elbow things that are two of the five major injuries he suffered
01:08before he starts 30 games,
01:10then it's just normal run-of-the-mill, bad luck quarterback stuff.
01:14There are guys in sports and history that have been injury-prone early
01:18that have turned in unbelievable Hall of Fame careers.
01:20Steph Curry's the greatest example.
01:22If you go back to the first couple years of his career,
01:24people are going, this undersized small guard from Davidson is,
01:29what a waste of a pick.
01:30He's never going to amount to anything.
01:32He could shoot it, sure, but A, can't get a shot off.
01:34B, he's constantly injured.
01:35Ankle surgery.
01:36Missed tons of games his first couple of years.
01:38They thought it was a disaster.
01:40Changed basketball forever.
01:42So my point is, there are scenarios where guys have been injured a bunch,
01:45it's terrible luck, and then you kind of look at your watch and go,
01:48you know what?
01:48He hasn't been hurt in a long time.
01:50Maybe this is normal again.
01:52That's kind of the only hope I have, and it's way, way far away.
01:55It's not just over the mountain.
01:57It's over mountain range, and then I've got to get on a plane
01:59and go find another mountain range, but it's there.
02:02I think about guys who had reoccurring issues like Santana Moss.
02:06Tana, early in his career with the Jets, had a debilitating, awful hamstring thing,
02:11and it wasn't until he got here, part of why the Jets were willing to trade him,
02:16I think, for Lavernius Coles, that he was able to put that behind him
02:19and become one of the really consistent, truly dynamic receivers in the National Football League.
02:24But that was a nagging thing that you couldn't quite fix or get right.
02:29That's the equivalent to me of the Jaden Elbow.
02:32But I think it works because once Moss got the hamstring ironed out,
02:37it wasn't like he had a bunch of other issues.
02:39And I'm open to that possibility with Daniels, that he comes back and you brace up
02:43and everyone seems to think that's the magic bullet here that's going to fix everything.
02:47Again, I would say that if wearing a brace is such a great preventer of anything happening,
02:55there was zero reason for him not to have been wearing a brace this past weekend.
02:59Yeah, I got a lot of questions there.
03:00That is no longer relevant, I guess.
03:02The other thing is you brought up the possibility of surgery, right?
03:06Yep.
03:07I want to ask a doctor, and we're going to have one on the show today at 425.
03:10We've been told by multiple people, I've heard doctors saying this is a crazy long recovery,
03:15that if he were to have the procedure done early in the offseason,
03:17depending on what the procedure is exactly,
03:19that it could linger into training camp next year or into the football season,
03:23that it could be close to a year-long full recovery.
03:26Does that not matter as much because it's a non-throwing arm?
03:29So all summer, he just wouldn't play in the preseason.
03:32You don't have him practice in any contact situations,
03:34which is most of what practices are anyway.
03:37And he'll be ready for week one.
03:39I don't know.
03:39I kind of feel like if you're having the surgery, you've got to do it now
03:42if the recovery is actually a 10- to 12-month thing.
03:46I do need clarity on that, but what you're saying makes sense.
03:48To let it linger into your fourth NFL season would be preposterous.
03:52That's an outrage to me.
03:53But I don't know what I don't know.
03:55So we'll talk to a doctor today at 425.
03:58We'll get an answer for that question.
04:00But we want to know what gives you hope that he can stay durable.
04:03I guess my answer to that would be that other than elbow stuff,
04:07he has not had any injuries since the hamstring in Dallas midway through last year.
04:11Now someone could retort pretty easily and say,
04:14well, that's because every time he plays, he hurts his elbow.
04:16It's kind of hard to hurt something else when you're dealing with an elbow injury.
04:20But the hamstring against the Cowboys, the groin, whatever that was that he pulled
04:25trying to make a move in the backfield,
04:27that was a couple-a-week thing that was semi-minor as it was.
04:31Let's go to the phones.
04:32800-636-1067 to join us.
04:35Chuck is in D.C. on the fan.
04:37What's up, Chuck?
04:37How are you?
04:39Hey, guys.
04:39Good afternoon.
04:40I'm very well.
04:41First-time caller, long-time listener.
04:43I know that's a bit of a trope, but it's...
04:50Welcome to the G&D program, sir.
04:53Well, thank you.
04:54And in the interest of full transparency, you're talking to an Eagles fan,
04:58but that's not relevant.
05:00What's relevant is this.
05:02How many football players, not basketball players,
05:06because they don't have 300-pound men trying to tear their heads off,
05:09how many football players have sustained injuries in each of their first three seasons
05:18and missed significant times?
05:20How many football players can you name that that describes
05:23who have gone on to have careers that will amount to something more than the Hill of Beans?
05:29Because that's the concern here.
05:32Yes, it is.
05:32If it isn't my elbow, isn't it another elbow?
05:35Isn't it fair to say he probably has weak elbows?
05:38So, I'm not rooting against him.
05:40I rooted for RG3.
05:41I like to see young guys succeed.
05:43But the reality is, three seasons, lots of significant injuries.
05:50What's the road ahead?
05:51Thank you, Chuck.
05:52Clearly, the trajectory is not good.
05:55And yes, you are right.
05:57I would be willing to bet that if you took someone with a comparable injury history
06:02in terms of games missed to this point, percentage of time available,
06:06more often than not, the road ahead is not that they suddenly get healthy
06:11and they become Mr. Durability.
06:13The question is just, is there a path to that and what is it?
06:17Does something, anything, give you hope or confidence that he can become that guy?
06:21And oddly, the fact that it is the elbow over and over again,
06:25that this is three elbows in a row, two dislocations,
06:28and then the one where it just got banged up when he was braced up against the Vikings,
06:31I actually think that's better because if you fix that part, you might be okay.
06:37It's the equivalent of, you know, basically like failing on your diet the same way three times.
06:44You're like, well, if I just stop doing that, I'll be okay.
06:46If I avoid those pretzels.
06:47Exactly.
06:48It's just, oh, when I watch football.
06:49Okay, well, we got to work on that.
06:51It's not like, well, it's when I watch football or anytime I'm at home
06:54or if I drive past the place, like there's one issue here,
06:59at least there has been for the last near half football season.
07:04And if you can get past that, maybe you talk yourself into he can stay healthy otherwise.
07:11The reason I'm willing to hear it is because of how he looked sliding
07:15and protecting himself yesterday.
07:17He's going to have a way harder time getting hurt if he plays like that all the time.
07:20I don't know if he will,
07:21but he didn't take hits while scrambling for 70 rushing yards.
07:25That's right.
07:25Running all over the Cowboys.
07:27He slid.
07:27He got out of bounds.
07:29He got down.
07:30I remember the Eagles game.
07:31There was only one kind of weird play in the middle of the field
07:34where he made a couple guys miss.
07:35And then he did this thing where he like jumped up in the air
07:37like he was jumping into a pool and like turtled.
07:40Even then it's on his mind in a very precarious way.
07:43He's trying to avoid that.
07:45Cause he knows I'm in the middle of the field.
07:46Alert, alert, right?
07:47Now, do I worry about him getting landed on in his collarbone breaking?
07:50That's what I said before that he came out.
07:52Like, yeah, he's a tiny, frail guy,
07:54but that has not happened yet in fairness to him.
07:57It never happened in college.
07:58It hasn't happened professionally.
07:59So that's just my own fears of what could be under the bed.
08:03Daniels and Frederick.
08:04What's up, Daniel?
08:06Hey guys.
08:07Just want to let y'all know.
08:08I love y'all show.
08:09They're riding home in the evening.
08:11It's in the afternoon.
08:12It's great.
08:13Like, I won't keep you out of long,
08:15but I really think that they're going to get a brace that's, you know,
08:18is lightweight, something that will really work for him.
08:20Like y'all were saying, to keep that elbow from popping out.
08:23The surgery.
08:24I mean, granted,
08:25we could probably go without him and get the surgery,
08:28but it's going to be hard on us, the fans.
08:31So I'm definitely leaning towards us with all the technology we have today to
08:35get it, you know, something really to work for him.
08:37And I think, I think he's going to do fine.
08:39I think we're going to have a good year.
08:40I hope so, dude.
08:42The start is not what we want.
08:43And we're already doing this kind of dance of, you know,
08:46we're waiting weeks at a time for updates and we're going to kick the can
08:49down the road.
08:50Maybe he's practicing.
08:50Maybe he's not.
08:51We all did that last year ad nauseum and it wasn't fun for anybody.
08:55Speaking of updates, we just got one on Jackson Dart,
08:57and this is going to be crushing for Giants fans.
09:00Let's go to Toby for the update.
09:08Initially Jackson Dart was thought to just have sprained his MCL,
09:12but he had an MRI today and it revealed that the knee injury is much worse than
09:16initially thought.
09:17Adam Schefter reporting that the team and Dart now are facing the possibility of
09:21season ending knee surgery after he was hit last night in the knee.
09:25Again, believed to initially be a sprained MCL,
09:27but much worse after an MRI today and he could be done for the season.
09:31I'm Toby Altheiser with breaking news on the fan.
09:33Thank you, Tobes.
09:34That's brutal for the young, talented passer for the Giants and that fan base,
09:40especially because you got hoodwinked a little bit.
09:43I mean, this was an okey-doke.
09:45You went to bed last night.
09:46Everything was trending in the right direction.
09:47Yeah, it was better news than you thought.
09:48The Monday Night Football telecast is saying he wants to get back into the game.
09:52They're confiscating his uniform, MCL.
09:55Even John Harbaugh, who was not willing to give full details,
09:59said, yeah, that sounds about right.
10:01We'll have more details tomorrow.
10:02This is why you got to do the imaging.
10:04That's right.
10:04You know, this is why you got to get that second opinion and deep dive into the visuals
10:08because it sounds like they found something else here,
10:11and they're fearing now that Dart could be out for the year.
10:13By the way, the Commanders play the Giants two times coming up in the next several weeks.
10:17That's now a Jameis Winston-led Giants team.
10:20So from a Washington perspective, that is a very big development.
10:24More on this in a moment.
10:26800-636-1067.
10:28By the way, the hits just keep on coming at the quarterback position in this league.
10:32I saw that the Bears, who play on Monday Night Football, Tyson Bajan's got a concussion.
10:36Their backup was supposed to be starting for Caleb Williams.
10:39So week three, they have?
10:41Old friend Case Keenum.
10:43Here we go.
10:43Would be a starting quarterback on Monday Night Football.
10:46You want to try to ruin a product?
10:48You keep starting twos and threes.
10:50We're only three weeks into this thing.
10:51My goodness.
10:51Grant and Danny on the fence.
