00:00Most cartoons pretend you are not watching.
00:02Bluey does not.
00:03Characters look directly at the camera,
00:05the title cards get rewritten mid-episode,
00:08and one moment stops being animation entirely.
00:10These are every fourth wall break in Bluey.
00:13In the episode Flat Pack, we found a funny one.
00:16Bandit and Chili are assembling furniture
00:18when Chili tells him to follow the instruction manual,
00:21and Bandit shrugs it off by saying,
00:23I'm not taking advice from a cartoon dog.
00:26Well, who's going to tell him?
00:27That's what makes the joke so good.
00:29Bandit is casually roasting the exact kind of character he is.
00:33In the episode Shops,
00:34Bluey and her friends are playing pretend shops
00:36when Chloe, Bluey, and Honey act like kittens,
00:39meowing and crawling around.
00:43At that exact moment, Mackenzie just stops.
00:46He turns and looks straight at the camera
00:47like he is desperately searching for an adult.
00:50Later in the same episode,
00:51when Honey and Mackenzie start going at each other,
00:54it is Bluey's turn to give the camera the exact same look.
00:56In Bingo, Bingo decides to play I Spy.
01:00There's just one problem.
01:02She's completely alone.
01:03So she looks around and gives it a shot anyway.
01:06Bingo eventually gives up and walks away.
01:08But right before she leaves,
01:09she turns towards the camera and says,
01:11It was a rug, by the way.
01:13And that's it.
01:14No dramatic music.
01:16No explanation.
01:17She just tells us the answer.
01:18Because apparently, Bingo has decided
01:20that if nobody in the healer house
01:22is willing to play I Spy with her,
01:24she'll just play it with whoever's watching.
01:26In Granny's, Bingo is playing an old lady called Rita,
01:30who has been stuffing tins of baked beans into her jacket.
01:33The tins fall out,
01:34and Rita dramatically announces,
01:36I slipped on my beans.
01:39While the kids are laughing,
01:40Chili quietly turns to the camera
01:42with a look that says everything.
01:44The Creek has the best camera look in the entire show.
01:47Bluey is standing at a waterfall too scared to jump,
01:50and Mackenzie tells her to just imagine
01:52it is like jumping from one sheep to another sheep.
01:55It's just like jumping from one sheep to another.
01:59Bluey tells him she does not jump on sheep,
02:01and Mackenzie's head snaps toward the camera
02:03in genuine shock.
02:05Which is actually a brilliant joke,
02:06because Mackenzie is a border collie,
02:08and border collies herd sheep,
02:10and Bluey is a healer,
02:11and healers herd cattle.
02:13She genuinely does not jump on sheep.
02:15It is the only thing he knows.
02:17But things get considerably stranger in sleepy time.
02:20Bandit has spent the entire night
02:22being tortured by his children sleepwalking.
02:24He gets Bingo back into bed.
02:25Then he gets interrupted by Bluey,
02:27and finally makes it back to his own bedroom,
02:30only to discover Bingo is somehow already there.
02:33Then Bluey jumps in too.
02:35Bandit just stops,
02:36looks directly at the camera,
02:38and sighs.
02:39He doesn't say anything.
02:40He doesn't need to.
02:41It's the exact expression
02:42you'd give another exhausted parent across the room.
02:45Except,
02:46there isn't another parent in the room.
02:47There's just us.
02:48It's basically Bandit's way of saying,
02:51you seeing this?
02:52In Sleepover,
02:53we see Muffin who has arrived,
02:55having missed her nap,
02:56and is completely unraveling.
02:58At one point,
02:58she announces she is a llama.
03:01I am a llama!
03:03And Bluey then stares at the camera,
03:05trying to confirm she actually heard that correctly.
03:09Bluey's biggest fourth wall occurs in the episode Puppets,
03:12because Unicorse is already a character
03:14who seems to understand that something about his existence
03:17is deeply wrong.
03:18Bluey notices that he doesn't have any legs,
03:20so Unicorse lifts himself up,
03:22looks underneath,
03:23and discovers that instead of legs,
03:25he apparently has an arm.
03:26And later,
03:27when he's putting Bluey to bed,
03:29he asks her,
03:29How can you be sure you're not a puppet?
03:32Which would be a perfectly normal joke,
03:34except the episode,
03:35then proceeds to answer the question.
03:37Because suddenly,
03:38we're not looking at Bluey's bedroom anymore.
03:40The camera pulls back,
03:41and keeps pulling back,
03:42until Bluey's entire world
03:44is sitting inside an animation program on a computer.
03:47And then a human hand reaches in,
03:49and starts animating Bluey,
03:50actually constructing the character we've been watching.
03:53So Unicorse wasn't joking.
03:55Bluey really is a puppet.
03:56She's literally being controlled
03:58by a person outside her world.
04:00Then,
04:01just as quickly as it started,
04:03everything snaps back to normal.
04:04Bluey wakes up and says,
04:06Wow, that was a weird dream.
04:08Except,
04:09it wasn't,
04:10because we just watched it happen.
04:11We saw the computer.
04:13We saw the hand controlling her.
04:14Now let's talk about the title cards,
04:16because the show breaks those
04:17more than most people realize.
04:19In Puppets,
04:20Unicorse is supposed to read the title card,
04:22and instead announces that he cannot,
04:24because he does not know how to read.
04:25I don't know what that says.
04:27I can't read.
04:28Postman has two title cards,
04:30because the girls end up playing two games at once.
04:32So Bluey has to announce
04:34that the episode is now also called Grounds Lava.
04:37Onesies has its title read by Brandy,
04:39the only time she ever does it.
04:41Onesies.
04:42And Bumpy and the Wise Old Wolfhound
04:44turns the whole concept inside out.
04:47That title card is not the show's title.
04:49It is the title of a video bandit and Bluey,
04:52made for bingo while she was in hospital.
04:54The card that normally sits outside the story
04:56is suddenly inside it.
04:58In Daddy Drop Off,
04:59Lila, bingo's classmate,
05:00narrates her first day at kindy
05:02and how she met bingo.
05:03Because that was the first time I met bingo.
05:05And she is not telling another character.
05:07She is telling us directly.
05:09In chest,
05:10Bandit asks Bluey how old she is,
05:12and she says six.
05:13And Bandit stops and says,
05:15You are still six?
05:16She had been six for about 114 episodes at that point,
05:20the show acknowledging its own cartoon logic
05:22directly to the audience.
05:23In Kids,
05:24the family walks down a toy aisle,
05:26and on the shelf,
05:26there is a row of Healer House playsets,
05:28with a small plastic Bluey figure
05:30looking out through the window of the box.
05:32Bluey as a toy,
05:33inside Bluey.
05:34In Quiet Game,
05:35they walk past a bookshop,
05:36and in the window is a Bluey book
05:38about the episode Fruit Bat,
05:40a book that actually exists in real life too.
05:42In Born Yesterday,
05:44Bandit walks into the living room
05:45and says out loud to nobody,
05:46Dad enters the room.
05:48And in Perfect,
05:49he walks in with his arms out saying,
05:51It's Dad!
05:53directly at the camera,
05:54like he is introducing himself to the audience.
05:56And then Bluey starts doing something even more suspicious,
06:00because apparently,
06:01knowing there's an audience isn't enough.
06:03She wants to start messing with the actual program.
06:05Take Hairdressers.
06:07The episode begins normally.
06:09Bluey and Bingo are playing Hairdressers.
06:11Bandit is the customer.
06:12And everything is fine,
06:14until Bluey discovers something horrifying.
06:16Bandit has Knits.
06:17And suddenly,
06:18the title card changes.
06:20The word Hairdressers gets scribbled out
06:22and replaced with Knits.
06:24Then Bluey announces,
06:25This episode of Bluey is now called Knits.
06:28Think about how bizarre that is.
06:30Bluey isn't just acknowledging the episode title.
06:32She's acting like she has the authority to change it.
06:35And apparently she does.
06:36But if Bluey can change the title,
06:38what happens if a character decides
06:40they don't like the ending?
06:41Well, Stories has an answer.
06:43Calypso is telling a story
06:44about Indy making a horse out of beeswax.
06:47And Indy was making a horse.
06:49Except nobody thinks it looks like a horse.
06:52Everyone thinks it looks like a cow.
06:54Indy gets upset
06:55and decides she's never making an animal again.
06:58And that's where the story ends.
06:59The credits start rolling.
07:01Except Winton isn't particularly interested
07:03in respecting the boundary
07:04between the story and the credits.
07:06He starts messing with the names
07:07as they roll past.
07:08And then Indy has a problem.
07:10She doesn't like her own ending.
07:12I don't like that story, Calypso.
07:15Calypso tells her she can tell a different story.
07:17Well, why don't you tell a different story?
07:19So they do.
07:20The story literally starts again.
07:22The bad ending gets thrown away
07:24and Indy gets another chance.
07:26Which means a character inside the episode
07:28has effectively looked at the story
07:30she's currently living through
07:31and decided to rewrite that.
07:33And then Bluey goes one step further.
07:35Because if she knows she's in a show,
07:37maybe she can control the show too.
07:39And that's exactly what happens in Ghostbasket.
07:42Except Bluey isn't technically Bluey.
07:44She's pretending to be an old woman named Janet.
07:47The episode begins with the usual title card.
07:49And normally, one of the characters reads it out.
07:51But this time, Janet does.
07:53This episode of Bluey is called Ghostbasket.
07:57So Bluey is pretending to be a granny.
07:59While the granny she's pretending to be
08:01is standing inside an episode called Bluey
08:04and reading the title of that episode aloud to the audience.
08:07She doesn't even acknowledge that anything is weird.
08:09Which somehow makes it weirder.
