00:23Good morning everyone, welcome to St George's Park for this media conference with Jarrod
00:26Branthwaite, as ever we'll take the first section live and at the end we'll have a short
00:30second embargoed until 10.30pm this evening. We'll start with two questions each, I'm sure
00:35we'll get time to come back with you for more at the end but just make sure we get a
00:38fair
00:38spread across the room. So Robert, are you going to send away? Jarrod, great to see you and
00:43huge congratulations mate with everything you've been through in the last season and a bit with
00:46injuries. I mean it was obvious how devastated you were back in April when that hamstring
00:52went again and he had to be helped off. Does that make an England recall even more special
00:58for you and what does it mean for you to play for England? Yeah definitely I think like you
01:04said when I went off with the injury I was devastated after the amount of times I've you know came
01:11back from it and then for it to happen again so I think like you said to be called up
01:15back
01:15to the England squad means everything for me and I think all the hard work that's went in
01:19in the rehab and to get back to this point it makes it worthwhile and I'm just buzzing to be
01:24back in England. I mean you've done it before but is it still very special to pull on that
01:28England shirt? Yeah 100% every time you know you see your name on the list it's a pleasure and
01:34you know I'm thankful I get this opportunity to play for England and like I said all the hard work
01:40that went in through them rehab and throughout the season to get me to this point it's been worthwhile.
01:46I assumed you watched the World Cup along with the rest of us and some magnificent
01:50performances and some great highs and you know one particular huge low as well.
01:55What did you make of you know the winning in the Azteca in Mexico which was extraordinary
01:59never say anything like it and then that semi-final defeat against Argentina.
02:03As a viewer what was the overall impression?
02:05Yeah I think you know looking from the outside the lads done an unbelievable job
02:10I think when you talk about the Mexico win and the result there and then obviously with football
02:19you get highs and you get lows and obviously to come off on the wrong side of the result
02:23with Argentina it was obviously a big low for the team but I think you know the way they performed
02:29and you know the circumstances they came up against they did an unbelievable job.
02:34So yeah praise to them.
02:37Hi Gerard, after a major tournament there's always a refresh of the squad you've spoken
02:41about the injuries now you're in this squad after a major tournament so do you feel like
02:45this is the perfect time for you now to cement your place regularly as an England international?
02:50Yeah I think every time you get the opportunity you've got to show the best account of yourself
02:56to give yourself the best possible chance to be in the squad and in the team for the future
02:59so I think you know that starts with every training session and every chance you get to step on the
03:04pitch
03:05to show the best account of yourself and hopefully I can do that.
03:08What has the manager said to you? Has he said he's been watching you for a while
03:11would have called you up before if it's not for the injuries
03:13and what's he said to you about these games and this longer block as well?
03:16Yeah I think his main message was just to come in and be yourself and express yourself
03:22and you know the quality you have and bring it to the squad essentially.
03:26I think you know the quality in the England team it's very high
03:29and you just need to come in and be yourself and show what you can do.
03:34Gerard, Gary Brown, Beansport, nice to meet you.
03:37Could you talk to me about this remarkable season for you?
03:41You are top in terms of blocks in the Premier League now,
03:45you've really struggled with injury at the past.
03:47I would like to ask you specifically about the meeting you sat down and had with David Moyes
03:52about the injuries you were having and you asking them to go away and find a different approach
03:57that led to these brainutropics.
03:59Yeah I think you know when something like that happens three or four times you've got to sort of reassess
04:06what's going on
04:07and I think you know as a club we sat down and it was probably his idea more than anything
04:13was to go and have a look elsewhere at different things
04:16and I think we came to the approach, we found someone in Germany when we went there and I was
04:22there for three or four weeks
04:24and just looking at a different approach to the body, a holistic approach to the body essentially
04:28and fingers crossed it's put me in a good position.
04:31How much faith has it given you in your body and from a real, from this side sitting down, can
04:38you tell us exactly what brain work you did
04:43and how it helped you learn more about your body and stabilise and strengthen it?
04:48I think you know when I was away it's a completely different approach, you don't just look at the hamstring
04:55as such, you look at everything, the way you move
04:57and how your brain works and how it functions at different times under fatigue and things
05:02and I think that was a big thing was you know especially going into pre-season, how I've sort of
05:07been managed through pre-season
05:08to give myself the best possible chance and build my minutes up to when I come to the start of
05:13the league that I'm ready and fit
05:14and I've played you know a certain amount of 90 minutes and my body knows that it can cope with
05:18that
05:18and as a club they've done a really good job with me over the summer to do that and put
05:22me in the best possible reason.
05:24And as a left footed footballer you fit a profile that England have really been lacking in some areas,
05:31what does Thomas Tuchel say to that about that specifically?
05:36Yeah like I said before I think it was just coming in and you know expressing yourself and showing what
05:41you can do essentially
05:42and I haven't been around the England camp an awful lot in the past couple of years with the injuries
05:46so
05:47like I keep saying it's just coming in and giving myself the best possible count and see how it takes
05:52me.
05:52Okay, we'll go to Joel and then Henry.
05:55Hi Jared, so Thomas Tuchel has said that he obviously appreciates the fact that you know you've got a really
06:00good left foot
06:01and your ability to build out from the back, yes you said that you have to come in and be
06:05yourself as you've spoken about,
06:06but what other skills do you think you bring to this current team that nobody else has?
06:13Yeah I think you know when my defensive ability you know blocking 1v1 duels and things like that I think
06:21is a real strong point in my game
06:24and I think also speed for balls and behinds is a big part of my game as well so I
06:28think something around those lines.
06:30Obviously we can see the confidence is back now, would you see yourself as a leader now at Everton
06:36which has helped you to get back into this squad?
06:39Yeah, over the summer we had a conversation with the manager and we had a big leader leave us over
06:46the summer there
06:47so it was about sort of getting another group together to become leaders and help the team
06:54and I think you know there's a couple of us that have sort of grown into that role, it takes
06:58time but hopefully I can start to become a bit of a leader.
07:02Henry.
07:02Hi Jared, Henry Winter, you've played under managers like Steven Presley, Gareth Southgate, who else?
07:11Sean Dyche and David Moyes centre-backs like that, have you learnt anything from them? Did they give you any
07:16specific one-on-one?
07:19I think the biggest thing, the credit I can give them is when I had their managers I was still
07:24very young
07:25and they gave me the opportunity to play games and play football and I think for a young player
07:30the best thing to do is to play as many games as you can and you learn on the job
07:34essentially.
07:36They do give you one-to-one little things that you can do but ultimately it's about you in a
07:41game and game scenarios
07:42and I think that's the best credit I can give them to give them the opportunity to play games.
07:46And which centre-backs did you watch or particularly admire?
07:51I think when you look across the whole of the Premier League especially recently when you're playing against Premier League
07:57opposition
07:58you see the quality of centre-backs in the league, you can take things from every team, you know what
08:04I mean?
08:04Every team's got centre-backs with different attributes which you can take stuff from so like I said when you're
08:09looking in the Premier League
08:10it's such a high quality league, there's always things you can learn.
08:13Go back to Alex and then Rob.
08:15Hi Gerard, you've obviously played in high-stakes games before yourself through your career
08:19can I just ask about that Argentina game obviously there's lots of debate around whether England were too defensive
08:24the way to protect their lead, do you think it's a natural thing as a player obviously having experienced similar
08:30in cup games
08:30and when you've had to protect a lead, do you feel they were too defensive or was it a natural
08:35thing to do?
08:36I think from my circumstance I think there's a prime example when I played this weekend when you've got a
08:42lead
08:42and you're sort of, you know, you're not holding on to it but it's just a natural thing to go
08:47defensive.
08:48But I think, like I said, it was one of them things where if it worked out then, you know,
08:53it wouldn't be the question.
08:54But, yeah, like I said, I think it may be a natural thing.
08:58I can only take from my own account, especially at the weekend we went 1-0 up and we sort
09:02of sat back
09:03so I think, like you say, it could be a natural thing, yeah.
09:05James?
09:06Hi Jarrett, you're in obviously the long list for the last Euros when you had your only cap today.
09:12Can you just talk a little bit about that experience of your debut and then, I don't know,
09:16did you feel you had a chance and how disappointed you were to miss out or did you sort of
09:20think it was a long shot at the time?
09:23Yeah, that was, yeah. It was obviously when I got my debut and it was the camp before the Euros.
09:31I thought throughout the season I gave a good account of myself to being with a good chance
09:35and, you know, I was rewarded by being in that squad before the Euros which was a big pleasure, you
09:40know.
09:42Yeah, it probably came not as a shock but it was one of the 50-50 decisions, you know,
09:46and at the end of the day that's what football is about.
09:49And probably looking back it helped me in a way because I had a little bit of an injury back
09:54then
09:54which could get sorted so it was probably a blessing in disguise.
09:57And when you see, obviously, the team went on to reach the final of the last Euros World Cup semi
10:02-final this time,
10:03do you feel that England generally are on the cusp of finally getting over the line and winning something?
10:09Yeah, 100%. Like you say, if you look at the last few tournaments, of course,
10:15and how they've came to success, I think it's only a matter of time before we start to reach that,
10:20yeah.
10:22John, I wanted to ask you about Jordan Pickford because you know him better than most.
10:2619 World Cup appearances, he broke that record while he was out in the US,
10:30more than any other England player in history. Does he get the credit he deserves?
10:37Probably not, no. I think you see the amount of times he's played for England,
10:41the amount of times he's played in major tournaments and the performances he puts in,
10:45he probably doesn't get the credit he deserves. He's a fantastic keeper and a fantastic person as well.
10:51And I think playing with him at club, it's a pleasure to play with him.
10:54And obviously when he's put on an England shirt every time, he gives himself the best possible account of himself.
10:59And like I say, he's been top for England and top for club as well.
11:03And also, whilst there's a debate supposedly going on at the moment about how important it is to play for
11:08England
11:08and whether some of the players that have withdrawn have maybe,
11:12and there's no suggestion at all that they're not injured by the way,
11:14but there has been some discussion about how important it is to play for England
11:18and whether that's an issue between club and country.
11:21Jordan's never given that impression. You know exactly from the start just how much it means for him to play
11:26for his country.
11:27Yeah, 100%. I think it's the same for all players.
11:29I think all players are fully committed to playing for England.
11:33You know, I can speak for myself how much of a privilege it is to be in the England squad
11:37and to represent England.
11:38So I think it will be the same for all the players.
11:40Finish your section with Kerry.
11:42You said that you learnt a lot from the England players in your role,
11:46but TikTok's betrayed you a bit because apparently your first hero was Sergio Ramos.
11:52Is that true? And what was it that you loved about the way he played as you go, potentially,
11:59to face space?
12:00Yeah, I think just when I was growing up I used to watch the Real Madrid Barcelona games
12:05and how big of a leader he was and the type of defender he was, aggressive defender,
12:11and he scored lots of goals as well, so he had an all-round game.
12:13So I think when I was watching him, when I was younger especially,
12:17it was probably a good person to base your game off to be an all-round defender.
12:23And Thomas Tuchel said to us, came out and said, the aim should be to win this Nations League.
12:28Winning trophies brings players together, but also we've seen the teams that have won it before
12:33and gone on to win World Cups, Euros.
12:36What has he said to you all? What's been his message this week?
12:40And has he talked about tactical transformation as well?
12:43Yeah, the message was to go the whole way in the competition and to win it.
12:49And I think to win the Nations League, like you say, to go on to the tournaments in the coming
12:55years
12:56would be a big positive for us.
12:58So like I said, the manager's message was to go the whole ten games and to get a result in
13:04all of them.
13:04And Gibbs White has been called up to the squad in quite a theatric departure from his wife on TikTok.
13:13Did you all watch that with enjoyment and did you all welcome him in similar musical style?
13:19Yeah, I've seen it, yeah.
13:21I think he'd not been there long in Dubai, but I was speaking to him.
13:24He said, like I said before, it's a privilege to play for England
13:29and it was a no-brainer for him to come back and put on the shirt.
13:32So, yeah.
13:33I'll keep you smiling. Thank you.
13:34Thanks, Kerry.
13:35Take a few questions now.
