00:47Hey everybody, I'm Christian Bryant. Hope your Wednesday is off to a great start.
00:52We begin this morning with Iran.
00:54Its president is about to take the same U.N. stage where President Trump threatened just yesterday to, quote,
01:00annihilate the Islamic Republic.
01:02Masub Pazeshkin arrived in New York late last night, vowing to, quote,
01:06firmly defend Iran's position on the war.
01:09But he arrives with diplomacy already underway.
01:13U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff says American and Iranian negotiators held lengthy, indirect talks on the sidelines of the General
01:20Assembly Tuesday.
01:21He didn't say what they discussed, only that he hopes the talks will prove, quote, constructive and promising.
01:28Trump called it a very good meeting and told reporters another round is scheduled in the near future.
01:33That's a very different tone from the one Trump struck on the U.N. stage just hours earlier, threatening to
01:40wipe out Iran,
01:40while also saying he believes a deal can still be reached.
01:44But I have a big decision to make.
01:47Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever
01:56was before?
01:57Maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world?
02:02Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy
02:10people and countries again?
02:13Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?
02:21But I believe we'll make a deal right after the election.
02:26Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson responded to that threat early this morning, saying, quote,
02:31These remarks don't stem from strength. They stem from desperation.
02:36Also at the U.N., President Trump signed a new security deal with Denmark and Greenland Tuesday that clears the
02:42way for a much larger U.S. military presence on the island.
02:45The agreement adds two U.S. defense areas in Greenland and allows the military to expand its existing space base
02:53there.
02:54Greenland remains under Danish control and the deal has no expiration date.
02:58It would remain in effect even if Greenland eventually becomes independent.
03:03You go back way back in the line of presidents and almost every president at least mentioned it, but most
03:10of them just mentioned it.
03:11Some really wanted to make a deal and never got done, but we're getting it done.
03:17So this is tremendous for Europe and for the United States and for everybody.
03:22And for Greenland, it's going to be incredible.
03:24One of the two sites is Narsarsuak in southern Greenland.
03:28The U.S. military has been here before.
03:30It was home to a major American base during World War Two and the early years of the Cold War
03:36before that base closed in the 1950s.
03:38The other is Mesterveig, roughly 950 miles away on Greenland's east coast.
03:44That site is already a military outpost used by Denmark's Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, a special forces unit that operates
03:51in the Arctic.
03:52The agreement also bars non-NATO countries from establishing their own military bases or a permanent military presence in Greenland
04:00unless the three sides agree otherwise.
04:03Mr. President, you have been very clear. You don't want adversaries to come too close. I fully agree. And with
04:14this deal, they are not.
04:16The deal follows a bigger military push in the Arctic. Just last week, U.S. F-16s flew over Greenland
04:23alongside Danish F-35s and Canadian F-18s during Operation Arctic Vanguard.
04:29The exercise was designed to get U.S., Canadian and NATO forces working more closely together in the region.
04:36A federal judge is ordering the Venezuelan man shot by an ICE officer in Texas to appear in court as
04:43his lawyer fights to keep him from being deported.
04:45The order comes as Austin police released new video showing 28-year-old Wilbur Garces Perez in his car moments
04:53after Sunday's shooting.
04:55The video does not show the shooting itself.
04:57Garces Perez's lawyer says he was taken back to the hospital this week and has since been returned to federal
05:03detention.
05:04She says he's still in a lot of pain with the bullet lodged near his spine.
05:09On Tuesday, a federal judge ordered him to appear in person next Wednesday as his attorneys fight his deportation.
05:16Garces Perez entered the U.S. in 2024 through the Biden-era CBP-1 program.
05:22His lawyer says he was later ordered deported after missing a hearing because the notice went to an old address.
05:28NBC News reports the ICE officer who shot him had been issued a body camera but wasn't wearing it.
05:34Another ICE officer was wearing one, but DHS says that video doesn't capture the shooting.
05:41For the third time in three weeks, the fight over Missouri's congressional map is back at the U.S. Supreme
05:46Court this morning.
05:47The latest round comes after a federal appeals court ordered Missouri to use new districts backed by President Trump,
05:54a map the Supreme Court has already blocked twice from taking effect for November.
05:58The new map reshapes a Kansas City-area district held by Democrat Emanuel Cleaver and was drawn to help Republicans
06:06pick up an additional U.S. House seat.
06:08But the timing is getting a little messy.
06:11Absentee voting is already underway using Missouri's old 2022 districts,
06:16and more than a million potential voters could be moved between districts depending on which map wins out.
06:22The appeals court put its own ruling on hold until Monday, giving the Supreme Court time to step in again.
06:29The justices have asked supporters of the new map to respond by midday today.
06:34Kamala Harris is back on the campaign trail, and she started in Michigan.
06:39The former vice president made her first major campaign stop of the midterms Tuesday,
06:43appearing with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Detroit.
06:47The two sat down for a roundtable on black maternal health, and Harris made a direct pitch for El-Sayed.
06:54His will be a voice, Abdul's, that is a voice representing the people of this state, and it will be
07:03a national voice.
07:04Harris has more midterm stops planned, including Nevada, California, and Georgia.
07:08But not every Democrat has wanted her on the trail.
07:12The New York Times reports Senate candidates in Alaska, Iowa, and Kansas have publicly said they don't want her campaigning
07:19with them.
07:20El-Sayed does.
07:22And the two have had some real differences, especially over Gaza.
07:26El-Sayed has been a vocal critic of U.S. military support for Israel.
07:30Harris was part of the Biden administration that faced intense pushback over its Gaza policy, particularly in Michigan, which is
07:39home to a large Arab American community.
07:41My disagreements with the then vice president's positions on Gaza are clear.
07:46And I still disagree with the position on which she ran in 2024.
07:50So the reality of it is that we have a big party.
07:53There are going to be issues on which there are disagreements in the party.
07:56And there's a lot of issues on which there are agreements.
07:58So what does it look like to bring people together around the issues on which we agree?
08:02That's what a mature politics looks like.
08:05And we can, you know, have our positions, our differences.
08:09I endorsed Vice President Harris for president.
08:11And I endorsed her because I understood that Donald Trump would be worse.
08:14El-Sayed is now trying to bring Democrats together after a divisive primary.
08:19He faces Republican Mike Rogers in November for the open seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
08:26Democrats need to hold Michigan and pick up at least four Republican held seats to take control of the Senate.
08:33Finally, this morning, a sea turtle has made history in California with the first recorded nest ever found in the
08:40state.
08:40NOAA says an olive ridley sea turtle laid its eggs on a beach in Orange County, the first documented sea
08:47turtle nest in California.
08:49Olive ridleys usually nest in much warmer places, including Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
08:56Scientists say sightings this far north could become more common as Pacific waters get warmer, especially during El Nino years.
09:04NOAA will keep watch over the nest during the incubation period, which could last up to two months.
09:10And they're asking beachgoers to give it plenty of space.
09:14And here's one for the water cooler.
09:15Olive ridleys are the smallest sea turtles.
09:18Adults top out at about 100 pounds, which is small in the animal kingdom.
