00:38i'm sorry of the week excuse me um and then we'll know more about dj moore and ed oliver we

00:45that over the weekend ian rapaport reported that dj moore would practice this week and he was
00:49considered day to day and ed oliver was also considered day to day so we're in a little bit
00:55of a uh wait and see uh holding pattern here but by the time uh you guys are off the
01:00air at two
01:01maybe joe i shouldn't joe brady might not tell us anything because typically last first couple weeks
01:05he didn't want to say anything about who's going to practice or not yeah that's all right um what's
01:09more screwy in a sport that is built around routine and obviously as the bills have gotten better at this
01:17whole thing they play fewer sunday one o'clock games but coaches love that routine what's screwier
01:22the short week where you really don't have time to think about it you just got to get back out
01:26there on a thursday or this slog between a thursday and then a next sunday game as a fan
01:32i am less comfortable with this part of it that one was just go play football this part is just

01:36all right come on with the injuries and all this stuff let's go yeah i think as a fan you

01:41when you're 2-0 especially you just want to get out there and play like let's go we're rolling
01:44let's do this right um you get a little bit worried about okay are they off too long uh you

01:500-2 team coming in i think circumstance matters to that answer but i i think obviously the players
01:56would always prefer the 10 days as opposed to the four days um even for me like i'll be like

02:02job in my role like it's great to just kind of have the turnaround but it gets it gets tight

02:07you're going from a sunday to a thursday and all the different things you have to do you're like i
02:10like the routine i i know when the bills play on sunday at one o'clock for a few straight
02:14weeks like
02:14they are this week and next week i know exactly what my week looks like the next couple weeks you
02:19know what i mean i that's not the case when they have these other days yeah well you know the

02:24the friday news conference after the thursday game is where you realize the whole week is in a tizzy
02:29right like all of it's just lost i don't i don't know where to where to go with it but

02:33on monday though we didn't have anything monday right so that's always good that's nice so all
02:37right 2-0 how are they feeling from your perception how are you feeling about how it went of course
02:44you want to start 2-0 um but did it has it gone exactly as planned or exactly as uh

02:50hoped i think anytime you get two wins against two teams like the texans on the road and then the
02:55lions at home i think yeah as planned as hope that that's the number one thing um certainly jim
03:01leonard has indicated that you know they have some issues on defense they need to fix and we all see
03:06that and they know that um you know there's some things i think he said that he was mad walking
03:12off the field thursday night after the game i mean they allow 31 points they went up winning the
03:16game but he said he was mad he said but then he watched the film and he he was less
03:21mad he was
03:22happy with some of the things they did i think what's the old saying it's never as bad as you
03:26think and it's never as good as you think when you go back and watch things no matter how well
03:29you
03:30think you're playing it's not as good as you think no matter how poorly you think you're playing
03:32it's not as bad as you think you're just a little bit you're close in some areas and i think
03:36he feels
03:36like they are close in some areas for me this is kind of exactly what i thought this team would

03:41and i've been saying it not just not not this isn't you know johnny come lately here sal come
03:45on the radio and say i told you i've been saying for months that this team was going to be
03:49very
03:50risk reward on both sides of the ball and that's what we've seen we've seen far more reward no doubt
03:56especially on the offensive side but this is this is who they are this is what they're going to live

04:01pretty much all season now when they play the dolphins and you know the dolphins could be a pretty bad
04:07team so when they play them i would guess are they going to be giving up 31 points you hope

04:12are they going to have to go out there and score 40 points to win you hope not they might

04:17little bit of a different game the game script but this is so they're going to be all year guys

04:21people need to brace themselves for this high event football as i've called it risk reward type of
04:25football i'm not saying they'll get 31 points scored every week against them you hope that's not the
04:29case but they're it's it's going to be a wild ride yeah it certainly has uh gotten off to that
04:34start sale and i'm i'm curious who on the on the defensive side of the ball you would point to
04:39is like this is the guy that i'm thinking about most in this way of like this guy needs to
04:45sort of
04:46get himself under control and find his his groove in this defense i think there's a few guys on the
04:52in the secondary that i think have been quieter than than we've wanted to see them early in this season
04:58well i think christian benford is number one because he he is paid as your number one corner he has
05:04been treated like a number one corner he has been playing man to man against the top receivers
05:09and it hasn't gone quite as smoothly as i think that everyone would hope now that being said i
05:13think there's some good and bad here right um so i i was on this morning and you know someone
05:18had
05:18tweeted me and said i think you're defending benford too much and i understand because i'm about to tell
05:22you look he's played tough matchups he's played nico collins that's a tough matchup for him
05:26he's played i'm on ross st brown i get it i'm not excusing that and the point the person said
05:33to me was
05:33well shouldn't he be good too yes he is good when you're one-on-one and it's those guys you're
05:38gonna lose some you're gonna win some i just don't think he's won enough of them he needs to be
05:42better
05:42at winning them but i also tell you i don't think it's his strong suit to do that but they
05:46he's been
05:47put in this position so will that be the case against the chargers i mean their best receiver
05:51is lad mcconkey who plays in the slot i don't think you're you're not going against a nico collins
05:55you're not going against an amon ross st brown the following week the patriots don't have aj brown
06:00it is not going to be the same for christian benford every week but when he goes against
06:05and when this team goes against those types of receivers either a christian benford has to play
06:11better or b they have to come up with a bit of a different scheme or something that they're gonna
06:16have to tweak or maybe a little bit of both because i think that's been something that hasn't gone quite
06:21as smoothly now i also would tell you it's not just him as you point out in the secondary i
06:25just think
06:26their time on task hasn't been quite there that's where the 10 days really helps guys like we talk
06:31about the games they they need they need i think this week of practice this 10 days to really get
06:36some things kind of shored up on the communication end some meetings what they want to do these guys
06:42haven't been together because of injuries i think that will help as the season goes on and also the
06:46fact that the offense is still the offense with brady and the defense is the new defense with a weird
06:52preseason where nobody really plays anymore plus the injuries plus it's only three games plus you
06:57got all this stuff going it's a work in progress plus a bunch of new players um to me front

07:03thumbs up secondary thumbs down and i don't want to oversimplify it like that but when i think about
07:10the defense and people how are they giving up 31 points a game i'm like well i don't know because
07:14i've really loved deon walker and greg russo and bradley chubb and what's happening up front um so
07:23like we're back to what you say the high event thing i i think it is a it's a wild
07:29team to watch
07:30right now because of the the firepower they have up front on the defensive side of the ball and then
07:35a little bit of confusion as of right now but it's we're two games into a regular season with a
07:41new
07:41coordinator and new player i don't know it all makes sense to me the guys that i'm looking for
07:46to star early and be more active early i have seen and to me it starts with i know the
07:52numbers
07:52say russo it starts with deon walker deon walker has been the star of the first two games to me
07:57on
07:57the defensive side yeah and you know there's been guys who've really contributed i think duane
08:01carter's played well his first two games and you know he's not getting necessarily the love of deon
08:06walker and maybe rightfully so but he's really contributed and done a really nice job um so
08:12i i think this week this sunday's game to me is much more of a i don't want to use
08:19the word
08:19referendum but my eyes are on the defense because let's just play out the scenario of let's say the
08:25offense has a bad game is anybody really worried no i mean the offense will be fine right they have
08:29josh allen they're gonna be fine man you run into a jim harbaugh desperately coached team
08:34that's trying to save their season maybe they come up with a few things that
08:37they confuse the bills or they do throw a couple wrinkles you know there's a turnover to that can
08:42happen if this defense still continues to give up the kinds of plays and yardage and points they're
08:47giving up against this chargers offense which just seemed to not get out of his way for two weeks
08:52i'm gonna be a lot more concerned like they need to be better again if the bills go out there
08:58and
08:58score 40 something points 50 points and the game script goes well who cares they're giving up garbage
09:02time yards we have to keep that in context but i need this defense this week to show me more
09:09than
09:09they've showed me because they're playing an opponent that they should be able to do that
09:13against that that's going to be the test for me this week against this uh against this chargers
09:17offense yeah that that especially considering the chargers interior offensive line has really really
09:23struggled too which has been to me the strength of the bills defense so you'd like to think that they
09:29can sort of find their way to dominating that unit um and then just quickly joe brady's birthday today
09:35sal we're two weeks in what what have been your biggest sort of surprises about brady as a as a
09:41head coach through two weeks if anything so far i think we all knew him fairly well but is there
09:46anything that as he stepped into this bigger role that's sort of taking you by surprise i wouldn't say
09:51taken by surprise over the first two weeks i think if you go back though to when he was hired
09:55and some of the questions about him and i said this in the preseason and leading into the season he
10:00really kind of checked a lot of the boxes of questions and critics maybe which are the biggest
10:07thing for me was his relationship his his his ceo ability if that makes sense right like it's one
10:13thing to be a coordinator and run an offense with josh allen a position coach when you have to be
10:19the ceo
10:19of the entire team offense defense special teams and have coaches under you and veteran
10:25coaches who know what they're doing and young coaches and you have players who've been there
10:29and you're very close to their age like that relationship we know joe has the vibes and the
10:33really good relationship piece but what does that look like and that's been really good and i i've been
10:38it's not only the eye test of it guys it's what people say about them like every every player i've
10:43talked to we've put guys that come on what did deon dawkins say on the radio last week right when
10:47he was
10:47talking about this conor mcgovern on the radio like they really like playing for joe like they they
10:53believe that joe has that type of ability to connect with them on a personal level but also
11:00be the head coach that you need to be in the nfl now the test is this hasn't happened yet
11:06and maybe
11:07if they go 17 and 0 or 16 and 1 it won't happen how does joe brady react in crisis
11:13how does joe brady
11:14react when things aren't as smooth you know a real real big plus of sean mcdermott was he was really
11:21good at getting people out of that and getting the team out of that very rarely under sean mcdermott
11:26did this team lose two in a row they might have lost like one win lose win lose in the
11:31middle of
11:31a season sometimes but it was rare it did happen last year they had the uh patriots then the falcons
11:36game but i was just talking with eric wood on a podcast about this like yesterday and that's exactly
11:41what he said like sean had such an ability to put so much pressure on you when things weren't going
11:46well to make sure you were at your best the next time that's that's going to be the test and
11:50let's maybe that
11:51doesn't happen and that'd be great for everybody but i think so far like handling the good stuff
11:56and handling what you need to do to be a head coach and still maintain that vibe and that energy
12:02has
12:03been what has stood out to me about joe brady i don't have the numbers in front of me but
12:07the
12:08the mo of a mcdermott led team was they were losing two games in a row every year but exactly
12:16two games in
12:16a row yeah which is yeah it's exact it's perfect it might be five years in a row whatever it
12:21is
12:21but it's yeah every year they have this thing where they lose a game then they lose another one and
12:26every single time they come out of it and that's i think that's more impressive than not impressive
12:32right like i'd rather lose two and then fix it then lose one and then two weeks later lose one
12:38and
12:38two weeks later lose i don't know it's been that's been you're right i shouldn't say they rarely
12:42lost two in a row they never had never lost more than two right no that's right they never had
12:46that
12:46and that's right and look and i've listened to some of the calls today and the person called and you
12:50were right owen like i just think we have revisionist history on like how sean would run the offense or
12:56the handcuffing of josh like josh won the afc offensive player of the week today yeah yeah he won
13:02it 18 times under sean mcdermott and like the bills routinely blew teams out they routinely blew teams
13:09out now i will say this and it's something i've always said which is right there is no doubt if
13:15you listen to joe brady close enough you got to pick up some of the clues when like he was
13:18hired and some of the things he said if you listen to him close enough you could tell
13:21there was something in there of when the bills played better teams with higher level quarterbacks
13:27and offenses there was definitely a philosophy given to him of don't lose the game before you can
13:33win it don't give them ever extra opportunities let's make sure we're doing things right and be a
13:37little bit more buttoned up and if you want to say okay that's not the way it is now which
13:42i agree
13:42that's not the way it is and this is better for the team that's totally fair and fine but man
13:46the
13:46bills would routinely blow teams out even under sean mcdermott and there there's this this i don't
13:52know i've heard a couple people like talk about well you know he just wanted to make sure they ran
13:56the
13:56ball the whole fourth quarter in a close game and yeah i don't think that's true no i i i
14:00i get frustrated
14:01every time i hear that narrative pop up because it's very easy to sort of just put that on
14:07the whole system before with mcdermott and and how does josh allen win an mvp if that's the case
14:13right it it makes no sense when you actually consider what this team was and how great they've
14:18been the whole time that josh has been who he is all right so i i do i real quick
14:24i do think that
14:25no doubt anybody who thinks that there is a bit of a different approach under joe brady and he kind
14:30of doesn't give a crap and just says go play then that is absolutely true that's why the mantra of
14:34this
