00:14He said he thinks the defense gets a major pass, and I'm wondering if it'll be worse
00:19after watching the All-22, and then in my mind, like, that offensive line to me looked
00:25rough, and I wonder if it was as bad as it was watching it from the All-22, the full
00:32scope of things.
00:33So, it's a little tape drop Tuesday, as we are still looking at this game against the
00:39Bengals.
00:40Clint, the floor is yours.
00:41What'd you see?
00:43Well, I gotta start with, I gotta start with the simple fact that the defense wasn't as
00:49bad as I thought they were.
00:50At first glance, real time, even, I watched the TV copy twice.
00:57The defense was not as bad as I internally, I don't know if I literally verbalized or vocalized
01:07how concerned I was about the defense, but I can tell you it was a seven or eight on a
01:15concern meter for me on this defense, based on what I saw on the TV copy, not just the
01:20first time, but the second time.
01:21Oh, no.
01:23After watching the All-22, I will, I'll come down a notch, all right?
01:29It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was, and it was an overall improvement from week
01:36one.
01:37But I'm gonna tell you this.
01:38So, you feel better about the defense than you did yesterday?
01:41Yes.
01:43But I'm gonna tell you this.
01:45Another game film where this defense is a far cry from what they were last year.
01:54I mean, there is no doubt about it, and it's things that are on repeat, right?
02:00The offensive, I mean, I'm sorry, the defensive line gets caved.
02:05Now, every now and then, Will Anderson, somebody tries to block Will Anderson with a tight end,
02:09and he'll scrape over the top, and he'll catch a run from the backside or something.
02:13But when I say there is space, there is major push up front, and there is a lot of space
02:19for a running back to make hay, right?
02:23And it's consistently.
02:25I mean, you take a couple of penalties away, ticky-tack penalties away, and that old buddy
02:31Chase Brown, is that his name, Chase Brown?
02:34He's well over 100.
02:35Yeah.
02:36He lost one on a penalty edge.
02:37Yeah, so that's the second week in a row.
02:41I think maybe I was on an island the first week of like, hey, man, this interior defensive
02:46line is getting pushed around way too much.
02:48Well, it happened again this week, and it happened consistently throughout.
02:55I'm still concerned about the interior defensive line, which I will admit has as much to do
03:03with like stylistically scheme-wise what they're doing.
03:06Mario Edwards runs by running backs left and right.

03:10Yeah, he's being aggressive going upfield.
03:12So their scheme is getting used against them, as well as I just don't think they got –
03:17I just don't think they – in fact, I know.
03:20After watching them matched up with a defense that has plenty of meat, plenty of mass in
03:29between the tackles, the Texans just ain't got it.
03:31I mean, it's – I think next week, look out.
03:34Indy's going to run this thing downhill in a hurry against this defense.
03:38No question about it.
03:39They are.
03:40Right?
03:40So that reared its head.
03:42That appears to be significantly different than last year.

03:47Number two.
03:48Hey, man, these cats just decided they're going to go at 24.
03:53They're going to go at Derek's team.
03:54Yeah, they're not scared off, at least through the first two weeks, of attacking 24.

04:00I mean, they're going to go at him.
04:01Like, here's the deal.
04:03And I know one of them was an all-time great catch.

04:07Which, by the way, if he had not thrown that to Jamar Chase – I'm sorry, the second touchdown.
04:12If he had not thrown it to Jamar Chase, he should have threw it earlier for a touchdown
04:15to the right side of the field over there where Stingley and Petrie and all those were.
04:20But the crazy catch for a touchdown – okay, we'll chalk it as a crazy catch.
04:26Some may even think it's offense P.I.
04:28I mean, they came back a series later and went right at his ass with a back shoulder with T.
04:34Higgins.
04:34And T. Higgins caught that thing, which I think, by the way, was the swing point of that game.
04:39But you look at those two things, right?
04:41The interior defensive line is getting major push.
04:44Nobody appears to be scared of Derek Stingley, and they're making plays going at Derek Stingley.
04:50That went back to Kaysha and Boutte in the playoff game.

04:54And the third thing – the third thing for me is – I think most folks see it on the
05:02TV copy.
05:03Will Anderson is back, and Will was getting after it.
05:06And I'll be honest with you.
05:07I'll throw all the defensive line in this.
05:11Like, they're penetrating and getting to the quarterback and getting the quarterback off their spot
05:15in a way that I would say is comparable to what they did last year.
05:19Here's the difference.
05:21Last year, when – call it Will Anderson.
05:24Speed rushes around the outside of the tackle, and he gets Joe Burrow off his spot.
05:29Last year, it was like somebody kicked a waft's nest.
05:35As soon as that guy's off his spot, it's just – I mean, there's dudes all over him.
05:40I mean, it was like suffocating type stuff.
05:42But this year, for two games, one guy gets him off his spot.
05:47He just floats up in the pocket, throws a touchdown.
05:49He floats up in the pocket, drifts around a little bit.
05:52Awfully comfortable.
05:53Right?
05:54And now, you might chalk this up to, hey, they played two of the best quarterbacks in the game.

06:02I hope that's the case.

06:05I don't believe this defense is built to overwhelm first-year quarterbacks.
06:10I think it's built to give you a chance to beat the best that the league has to offer.
06:14And right now, I'm telling you, there's three major differences between last year.
06:20We're getting caved on the inside in a run game.
06:24Derrick Stingley Jr. doesn't seem to scare a soul.
06:27They're going right at him.
06:29And when they get a quarter – when this pass rush happens and they get a quarterback off his spot,
06:34he's awfully comfortable for two weeks in a row.
06:37And I think that is what this defense did well.
06:41The swarm aspect of it, talk about, like, their identity, whether it's the quarterback
06:45or the running back or a receiver or a tight end catching the ball, better this week, Ron?
06:50I would say on par with, like, what a good defensive team.
06:55This was more like pursuit drill.
07:01Yeah, we're going to get there.
07:01It wasn't like – again, those guys showed up last year five deep with violence.
07:08Maybe three times this game we saw that.
07:11And to your point, this team, one thing, it's almost like the equivalent of Mike Tyson
07:18not really going long in fights.
07:22And when you got later rounds, he looked different.
07:25This secondary has not had to deal with a lot of off-script schedule, off-script scramble drill stuff
07:35because they generally are sacked.
07:38Like, their pressure generally gets there, and they don't have to cover for this long.
07:43And we are seeing big plays being made in the first two weeks, Clint,
07:48where they get off-schedule, they move out of the pocket, and they got it covering.
07:53Like, we saw the second touchdown, Jamar Chase, Reed Blankenship had to try to trail him across the field.
08:01Usually, that guy is sacked or has to throw it away or doesn't get there.
08:08That has changed the first two weeks.
08:09You can look how Reed Blankenship played that particular play.
08:13He was a cover two, a half safety to the opposite side of the field, right?
08:18He knows it's Jamar Chase.
08:20There's not another threat outside.
08:21So, when he saw Jamar Chase breaking in initially, he shot down.
08:26That's usually it.
08:27Right, because the ball's coming out.
08:29It's coming out or they've been hit.
08:31Yep.
08:32Instead, he shoots down, and then he's in trail mode, and he's chasing all the way across,
08:36which isn't his job, by the way, but he's chasing all the way across the field,
08:40and ball's in the air.
08:43Look at Bullock on that play.
08:46First of all, there was a touchdown, an easy touchdown to the right, by the way, if he'd have wanted
08:50it.
08:50But look at Bullock on that play.
08:52I mean, Bullock never sees Chase coming.
08:55He thinks the ball's being thrown to him.
08:57He literally, it's almost like Jamar Chase surprised him and cut in front of him and took the ball out

09:02That's not Bullock's brand.
09:03Typically, he's the aggressor, right?
09:05So, I'm just telling you, man, this defense looks totally different.

09:12After watching the All-22 with the Texans and the Bengals,
09:16the Texans' defense is not playing with the edge or the swarm mentality that they had last year.

09:37And I'm going to tell you, the offensive line.
09:40That's where I want to get to.
09:41Was it as bad as it seemed like it was or worse?

09:50Trent Brown's in trouble, boys.
09:54I am an ultimate big-time Trent Brown fan.
09:59Man, if you're going to throw the ball 50 times a game and if you're not going to chip
10:07with your tight ends, I mean, there were times when a tight end or a running back
10:11was literally in the hip position of the tackle and would dodge the defensive end.
10:15If that's what you're going to do offensively and you're not going to help your tackles,
10:20you might as well get Fisher in there.
10:23You might as well get Fisher.
10:24Oh, Blake in there right now.

10:29Right now, what you watch, do you think Blake Fisher gives them a better chance than Trent

10:38If you're going to throw it 50 times a game and you don't want to help your tackle, absolutely.

10:44I think that's one of the big mistakes that Nick Cayley's made.
10:49You can talk about last week's sack and then the Trent Brown fumble.
10:55I think he's the one that whiffed and they got the fumble.

10:58He should have both.
10:59I mean, every time in those situations, Trent Brown should have somebody chipping every time.
11:04And if you're going to leave him, if you're going to leave your tackles on an island and
11:06you're going to throw the ball 50 times, then Blake Fisher should be your starting right
11:10tackle period point blank is it's over.
11:12I mean, that's, that's, that's how bad it was.
11:14Trent struggled.
11:15Trent struggled mightily.
11:16So Trent was the old lineman that stuck out to you that struggled the most.

11:22He, cause he wasn't going against Leonard big, big, big boy, Dexter, Dexter Lawrence.

11:45Now he's another one that's three 42 now, but, but, but the, the, that entire defensive
11:50line was given the Texans fits up front.
11:54And that's, that's the, that's the scary part.
11:57I mean, the one that tossed Trent out of the club.

12:03Um, but yeah, I think that's, and then if you look at the real swing moment in this game
12:09and I think maybe what D'Amico was referring to, to making plays is the, the series after
12:16the, the second Jamar chase touchdown, they go up 20 to three or was it 17 and they go
12:22up 17 to three.
12:23It was a 17 to three.
12:26The Texans come back and they drive a little bit and they get down there and they have a
12:31three play period or at least a two place span where there's points to be had.
12:37There's touchdowns.
12:37We all know it.
12:38The throw to Jarrett Wayne, where Jarrett Wayne looked like he was trying to lean over the
12:41top of the DB instead of just stay in the fade route and, and, and screwed that up.
12:45CJ actually made a great throw there.
12:46And then the next play was a wheel route to, uh, to Dalton Schultz.
12:50And it's a, it's a throw in the ocean six.
12:52If he doesn't get, if he doesn't get pressured from his left tackle, he got pressure from his
12:55left tackle and it was an errant throw.
12:57But I mean, whether he waits on that or he feels the pressure and throws it to Xavier,
13:01Hudson underneath and lacrosse her, you get the first down and the drives alive.
13:05So, um, they left, they being CJ and the offense, they left points on the field right there when
13:12it was 17 three and gave it back to, to, um, I think kick the field goal to make it
13:1817 six.
13:19And then that next drive, bang field goal 20 to six.
13:23It's a two score game.
13:24And they went to chewing clock Cincinnati did.
